Welcome to the official Doubling the Canon iCM List Challenge!

Goal:
Watch as many films from the official Doubling the Canon list as possible and share your thoughts
Doubling the Canon

Rules:
-A feature film (over 40 mins) counts as 1 entry.
-A total of 80 mins of short films/miniseries count as 1 entry.
-Re-watches are allowed and can be good for the soul.
-Please number your viewings to keep easy track of the score, and include the rank of the movie on the list as an extra identifier
-If you have any questions, please ask

Challenge History:
Besides a few unofficial runs, this challenge has had 3 previous editions:
2014 – hosted by HVM and won by frbrown with 28 points
2017 – hosted by klaus78 and won by tourdesb with 69 points
2018 – hosted by funkybusiness and won by Blueboybob with 139 points
two Bonus Challenges
- The “Breath of the Canon” Bonus Challenge (add #BotC if you want a movie to count for it)
Aim: Watch a movie from every decade between the 1910’s and the 2010’s (so 11 in total) from the list. One cycle only will suffice for the credit.

- The “Let the Host push some Obscurities” Bonus Challenge (add #HpO to be sure I spot it)
Aim: The following very low checked movies, only official on the Doubling list, I have marked as favorites and probably helped to get on the list. Let me give you a final push now to watch one, or more! But only if you have done everything else you aimed for this month.
- Quelque part quelqu'un (1972) #313
- Imburnal (2008) #105
- Nezhnost (1967) #686
- Local Color (1977) #400
The challenge runs from October 1 untill October 31, your local time.
Happy Viewing!

Final tally and update of this challenge!

Sorry again for not being able to make another update a few days back for a better spread of the updates. But it does mean there is loads to report now! We added four new players in the final stretch! One of them also being as ambitious to take up a bonus challenge that needed 11 watches...
Also two HpO were added, with positive feedback. I was in doubt if it was a good idea to make a bonus challenge of personal favorites, but I'm happy about the positive response it got in general, you guys are very nice to me :)
jeroeno, The Prisoner should count for a few more points, so I took the liberty (or host reponsibility?) to calculate them for you
St. Gloede, seems I had overlooked 2 titles from you before. Your long posts are a great read, but I guess not having the titles together makes the admin side a bit prone to errors ;)

So my thanks goes to all 17 players
And congrats to:
jeroeno, for being the runaway winner right out ouf the gates
pitchorneirda for being the first to complete the BotC bonus game
FilmWalrus for being second both for that bonus and in the challenge proper

October 19th update
Just a quick update, but great that jeroeno really liked the HpO he added to his challenge!

October 18th update:

Three people BotC-ed their challenge since the last update! With pitchorneirda beating everyone to the pitch, taking on the honor of being crowned first.
Also another HpO was added by sol, which... just makes me happy.
No new players joined the challenge this time, so I guess our roster seems set now. Together we've seen about 200 movies, which seems very fine... if you forget that more than half of those are seen by our top player jeroeno :)

Next update will probably be at the tail end of next week, as I'm travelling to Lissabon shortly

October 13th update:

A new player joined the challenge!
And another HpO was added too!!! Nezhnost is proving popular, maybe I need to do some campaining for the other titles too?!? ;)
FilmWalrus and pitchorneirda are now tied for the other bonus challenge! exciting stuff!!
jeroeno is still blazing ahead and leaving everybody to bite the dust. I don't mind that it is relatively quiet otherwise in this challenge, as long as everybody is making good discoveries, and that is happening it seems. Peter Pewas is the one for me this month so far... kinda frustrating I can't immediately delve into some more this weekend, but next week I'll be catching up and probably also take a silver medal for the list (10 away now!)

October 9th update:
(haven't saved the text I wrote at that time, as the idea to not completely rewrite the score-update-post only occured to me now...)

October 5th update:

That makes it 8 participants so far!
Half of them attempting the BotC bonus, which is very nice. FilmWalrus is leading the way there
One clear overall leader, way ahead of the pack, so it's all about that number 2 and 3 spot now ;)

sorry I didn't take on any of your bonus challenge ideas, I am actually a bit pressed for time this month and they seemed like more work. But I am otherwise fully commited to this challenge and hope for a lot of players to join the fun!

I fear most people will be too busy with the horror challenge but this'll be my main challenge for the month.

I'll split my attention between this and horror. I love horror, but Double the Canon tends to get very high ratings from me and I'm working slowing towards the DtC Bronze.

Maybe a challenge can help you get there, but usually it is stepping away from things feeling like tasks you have to do to regain some love... at least the Doubling list is varied enough to let you pick something whatever mood you're in! I hope you'll catch a few great movies (i'm sure they're there to be found!) and it is my pleasure to host.

So, I decided to take some time out of my busy horror watching schedule to fit something in here. Hopefully it won't be my only viewing this challenge because the DTC list is probably the one that I am most interested in working towards bronzing.

1. Remember the Night (1940) DTC #998

Image

Both Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray do well in the lead roles here, with the film teaming them up a few years before Double Indemnity would enshrine them as cinema legends. Stanwyck's casualness towards stealing and setting bins alight to get out sticky situations renders her a very interesting character, and while it is predictable that MacMurray will eventually develop feelings towards her, he puts up an initial wall of resistance very well. The pair also share some great adventures while on the road together, spending an indeed memorable night (and morning). A very likeable and quirky movie.

1. Dead of Night (Crichton, Cavalcanti & Dearden, 1945) #125

An anthology film of short ghosty, horrory stories with a framing story of a guy who discovers a nightmare has come to life, and he is confronted with all the people in his dream. I liked it, and I would like to know if it is the first of its kind. There are several other horror films made like it later, at least.

Hey, it's not fair, you bring ugly GIFs to Italy and post the funny ones here :verymad:. Seriously, I was thinking about having a break from Italian cinema now and then to watch a few DtC titles too but that cow interacting with Barbara Stanwyck (or vice versa) might be the final reason I needed. Incidentally, your progress icon and signature do not show —at least for me—.

After a Camera Japan weekend I was in the cinema tonight again and will be ágain tomorrow... so, I probably won't going to rake in the numbers this month. But, I am 18 checks away from the Silver on the Doubling list, so that at least is my aim!

no contribution or score update yet, but I wanted to make note of my starting stats now, before my first watches later this week!

checked: 733/1001
rank: #12
18 needed for silver

Yep, it's a great scene; a definite highlight of the movie tehe and if I watch any Italian movies this month, they will be gialli, so yeah, this is the challenge that I'll be falling back on whenever I feel like a break from the horror.

Does my progress icon and signature work now? If they both don't show at the same time it is usually because iCM is (temporarily) down.

beavis, thank you for hosting! Question for you:

A few months ago I watched Vlyublyonnye (1970), from the dtc list, which I guess translates to "Tenderness". I noticed Nezhnost (1967) from your bonus game is by the same director and also somehow translates to "Tenderness." Are the two films connected? If I wasn't particularly into Vlyublyonnye, should I still give Nezhnost a try?

Nope, it's the same in other challenges and not only yours. But they show when opened in a new tab. Strangely enough, list icons do work.

I discovered Nezhnost in 2017, fell in love with it and quickly watched Vlyublyonnye as the only other available movie to me. I rated the first one a 8.5 and instant favorite, the other was also good and the signature of the director is recognisable, but the movies are otherwise unconnected. I rated it an 8 and it hasn't remained in my mind as much as the other one. The movie you saw focusses on an adult couple and has maybe a modern and melancholic flavor, while the other one has a youthfull joy about it and a sense of place that reminded me a lot of the kids of the nouvelle vague running around Paris. It is a movie about the joys of summer, hanging around with friends and about this city that is both very modern (this is also the time of the thaw in Russian politics and art) but also a bit of an exotic melting pot.

Nezhnost = Tenderness btw
Vlyublyonnye = Lovers (the title in English is The Lovers, if you read somewhere that it is Tenderness, then they got the two titles confused)

Same here, I'll put it on my list.

One day too late to add Feng ai to the ICM 500<400 list. It would've been top 10 on my list for sure. Absolutely loved it.
Also Romy Schneider is probably the most beautiful actress ever.

1. Ghostwatch (1992) * 92 min. #922
The smug cynicism of most of the TV people is nicely set up during the slow start, the alternating thrills and lulls when the action starts effectively keep open the question of the reality of what is happening, but the ending seemed too over the top. Quite impressive for a TV movie, or any movie.

You know, going through this list I'm honestly surprised by some of the additions... I mean Coco (2017)? really? The Story of Dr. Wassell is a horrible movie with some of the worst scenes I've ever seen in a war movie. eXistenZ was a real nice surprise, I hadn't seen it since its release in theaters back in the day and it deserved a rewatch, it went from a 6 to a 7,5.

26. #870 El Mar la Mar (2017) 7/10
27. #868 Zwischen zwei Kriegen (1978) 7/10

6. Legend of the Holy Drinker (1988), 7.5

Fun to see a nuanced Rutger Hauer in the lead role of this ambiguous Italian novella.

7. The Lineup (1958), 6.5

A pair of drug-smuggling assassins collect the last words of their victims.

8. Three Poplars at Plyuschika (1968), #BotC, 7.5

For anyone whose ever considered a fling with their Uber driver.

After a six day stretch in cinema I finally had some couch time at home yesterday and watched my first one for the challenge!

1. Sans lendemain (1939) #660 #BotC - 8.0

A lovely old school gloomy mood piece with some very modern stylings in it's depictions of the Paris nightlife. It is short and sweet, might feel like nothing special to some, but they don't often make em like this (certainly in 1939... 1929 would have been a more common time for it or after that maybe something in the late 50's and early 60's)

One clear overall leader, way ahead of the pack, so it's all about that number 2 and 3 spot now ;)

Oh, I forgot I wanted to place this overview in my second post of the thread :)

(and if there are statistics I could (easily) keep during the challenge, or make at the end, pleasy ask or get my attention to them!)

2. One Cut of the Dead/Kamera o tomeru na! (2017) * 96 min. #646
This was a lot of fun, with a quirky first run through followed by the recapitulation showing the reasons that elements of the performances were off (with a third view of parts of the film during the closing credits). I like movies that wear their love of movie making on their sleeves.

Strongly agree. I saw this in theaters based on it getting a ~95% Metacritic (plus Akerman adapting Joseph Conrad sounded like a slam dunk for me), but I found it completely flat.
