My dreams of cheesing it to a high score have been crushed. :rip:

Is there an exception for the three series in the icm 250 list?

Still very excited to join, bonus challenge sounds fun too!

The first 2 are fine. They don't have that many episodes and are classified as mini-series on IMDB. Neon Genesis Evangelion has a lot of episodes and is classified as a TV series. So that one, no.

Could you change the rule from 8 to 13 then? There's really no difference between something like Tatami Galaxy and the tons of other single season series out there and IMDB tags for mini-series vs. tv series are notoriously dodgy and inaccurate.

01. 1.5* - Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' by Tadayoshi Yamamuro

The final film in the DBZ series. It's yet another return of one of the main baddies, illustrating how non-consequential any of the events in previous films really are. Just get the seven balls (which gets easier with every new iteration) and wish for whatever you please. Not great, especially not when it takes a full 90 minutes. Some old Freeza's old gang members have made their way back to Earth and, after collecting the Dragon Balls, are pleading with the dragon to return Freeza to them. Their plan works and there's yet another long-winded battle between Freeza and the DBZ crew. Guess who's going to win this time around. The animation and art style are a bit cleaner compared to the older films in the series, but they still lack the charm of the original. There's room for a little wackiness, which is fun, but compared to the action scenes and taking the length into account, it's simply not enough. Let's see what those Super films are all about then.

02. 1.5* - The Mitchells vs the Machines by Michael Rianda, Jeff Rowe

US animation has finally evolved beyond the Pixar look, but that doesn't mean that the films themselves have automatically evolved with it. The Mitchells vs the Machines may sport a slightly more interesting art style, but the obnoxiousness and the horrid comedy are still very much present. Katie is a bit of an outcast, but when she manages to get into film school she feels like she finally found her people. Rather than fly there, her dad plans a surprise road trip with the rest of the family to give his daughter a proper goodbye. The trip doesn't quite go as planned, and to make things worse, robots have started a war to take over Earth. High-strung, loud, and annoying characters, each and every single one of them. That's what killed this film for me. The art style is a step up from similar films, but it's not much of a comfort when your ears are ringing from listening to the horrid voice actors shouting every line. Not good.

I already watched most of the mini-series that I want to watch, so you're not giving me a lot of options, but I guess I still have a few left.

Is Black Jack eligible? There are 4 Black Jack anime series, but each one is a separate standalone series, so it's not a multi-season anime. 2 of them are short enough to be eligible, but I'll probably only watch the original OVA.

The list of episodes for the OVA includes both the OVA series and the TV series. The TV series also has its own IMDb entry with only 1 episode listed: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7150338/

You can check Wikipedia for a correct list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_B ... k_episodes

The OVA is 12 episodes, and the TV series is 61 episodes. Some anime websites list the OVA as 10 episodes, with the last 2 episodes listed separately as "Black Jack Final".

It was originally 8 episodes only, but decided to change it to allow a little more wiggle room. I know there are lots of series that are animated and some are amazing, but ICM stands for I Check Movies. I'm trying to steer people away from watching series and see animation as Film.

On the other hand, we're all adults and should be able to watch whatever we want, but I'll stick with the rules we have for this challenge and will only count that.

I strongly encourage everyone to watch animation as film (features, shorts), though. That's my two cents.

As for Black Jack, it's listed as one season of 51 episodes. I know nothing about the series though. On Wikipedia, they separate the series a bit more, so: Black Jack Special: The 4 Miracles of Life and Young Black Jack would technically qualify, as well as individual shorts and features.

Very rough animation, but made by children. The stories that the children tell of what they went through during the guerrilla war in Colombia is pretty sad, and that alone, makes the movie worth watching.

Quite alright, although most of the humour is in the "references are fun"-category. I really liked the Disney princesses teaming up like X-men.

1. The Breadwinner (2017)

Image

Her father imprisoned by the Taliban, a young Afghan girl disguises herself as a boy to work and buy food here. There is much to like in how confident and daring the preteen female protagonist is, and there are several suspenseful scenes as we wonder whether she will be finally found out. The animation itself though is never quite particularly classy. Almost all of the men in the film are drawn with absurdly long faces and noses to the point that the characters come off as unintentionally funny. There is some divine animation though as she on/off narrates a tale of a boy and an elephant to her baby brother.

1. Teen Titans Go! See Space Jam (2021, Peter Rida Michail): 4.8 - I laughed a lot at the other two Teen Titans Go! movies, I saw Space Jam in the cinema at the times and being born in the 90s I have nostalgic feelings about it, but this was really meh.

1. Shorts (81 min total) – Suzan Pitt #Anglo-America + AuNZ (USA) #Directed by Women
1a. Asparagus (1979) (18 min) – 7/10
1b. Jefferson Circus Song (1975) (15 min) 4/10
1c. Joy Street (1995) (24 min) – 4/10
1d. El Doctor (2006) (24 min) – 4/10
Of these four, Asparagus was the only one I enjoyed. The later two shorts had some wild tone shifts I had a hard time with, and the earlier short was hard to follow, but Asparagus found that sweet spot of strange that I vibed with.

2. Ce magnifique gâteau! (This Magnificent Cake!, 2018)#Western Europe (Belgium) #Award Winning (Grand Prize Animafest Zagreb 2018)
In a huge surprise, this film about the Belgian colonial rule of the Congo is pretty dark. It doesn’t depict actual atrocities from the rule, but the overall tone is dark. A very short anthology film, coming in at 44 minutes, this movie is more about setting a vibe than an overarching plot. The cute style of animation helps to highlight the darkness of what is going on. 7/10

My brain experienced a short circuit after reading that title and processing the according Gif.
Welcome to sci-fi anime territory!

Is this any good? The image looks interesting
Frankly. Not really. It's on youtube if you want to check it out though. The animation mostly hideous and the voice acting is mostly bad.

3. Miniseries – Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire (2023) Ep 1-10 #Africa + Middle East (South Africa) #Sci Fi
For Disney+, Disney teamed up with a South African studio Triggerfish Animation to create a sci fi anthology series featuring African creators from a number of African countries. Each of the shorts looks pretty different from all of the other shorts. The problem comes with the length of these shorts. They all end up only being about 10 minutes of storytime, so a majority of these feel very rushed. A lot of them also have a frenetic animation style that is a little hard to follow. Great idea, but just an okay end result. 5/10

4. The Legend of Shankhadhar (2016) #Rest of Asia + Oceania (Nepal) #Drama
This is Nepal’s first animated feature film about the legendary historical* philanthropist who helped pay the debts of everyone in Kathmandu. It’s apparently debatable whether or not he actually existed. The animation is VERY rough. For example a lot of the faces of background people being stuck in one expression, which was amasing, and anyone walking looks very odd. The story of Shankhadhar and how he happened on a bunch of gold was fun though. 4/10

5. Kurenai no buta (Porco Rosso, 1992) #Japan + China (Japan) #Anime ICM Top 250 Animated
Rewatch – It’s been at least a decade since I’ve seen this movie, but I still like this movie a lot. It’s an odd story, the tone and themes are different from a lot of Miyazaki’s other movies. Absolutely love the pirates. 8/10

03. 2.0* - Nimona by Nick Bruno, Troy Quane

I wish I could've liked this more. Nimona is a film that dares to take risks. It comes with its unique animation style, it's not franchise-related and there are some genuinely good ideas hidden away in there. It's also insufferably moralistic and it sports some terribly unfunny comedy bits. After a heroine gets rid of the evil in her kingdom, she puts in place a system that should protect her land for future generations. Her descendants are trained to be skilled knights, but times change, and 1000 years after her passing, a commoner is allowed to join the ranks of the knights. Things go horribly wrong when he is finally instated. I don't mind a story about outcasts trying to fit in, but the writing is terribly simplistic, and moralistic points are driven home through bland and basic dialogues, which really kills a lot of the fun. The dub is also disappointing, which is a shame as the animation is pretty interesting. Keep the animators, and change up the creative team for the next one.

1. The Breadwinner (2017)
2. My Old School (2022)

Image

Using animated re-enactments, this Scottish documentary follows the incredible but true story of a newly enrolled student at a posh public school who was not all that he seemed to be. The story comes with a number of twists and turns, some of which are fairly easy to guess, but the fact that nobody at the time guessed all of the things that would be revealed is pretty fascinating in itself. The choice to animate the re-enactments works well too, giving the whole thing the feeling of an urban legend of sorts and the mysterious student is a fascinating human being and what he did leaves open food for thought.

Second documentary I have watched in a row that plays out as (mostly) a series of animated reenactments. In this case, the subject is a teenager who survived the Armenian Genocide of World War I to eventually star in a Hollywood biopic of her life. It is an intriguing documentary as it's not a well-known slice of history given and knowing so little about the documentary going into it really adds to the experience. The animated reenactments looks divine too with a sumptuous visual style and some near-surreal touches, like two dead family members vanishing suddenly during a backyard performance of a play.

1.Your Name./Kimi no na wa. (2016) * 106 min.
It started slow, picked up a bit when the fantasy kicked in although that element seemed not very different than numerous other Japanese animes, but ultimately became an intriguing mystery.

I've seen Nimona recently and MvsM the day it came out. Both are quite hyped animation releases for obvious (and for secondary reasons), but I just feel more the way you do there, my overcritical colleague. :P
Kinda sad ..
