I'm not "trying" this month, but I'm admittedly curious to see how far I get without really trying - especially considering that I managed to see 80+ unofficial films last month without trying.

1. Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (2021) TSPDT's 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films

Image

Anthologies are hard to get right and the biggest issue for mere here was that I found the third tale much more fascinating than the first two. It is set in an intriguing near-future in which internet communication has become obsolete with women fascinatingly each mistaking the other for someone else. The other two tales spin far more ordinary stories of desire and seduction and Hamaguchi's dialogue-heavy approach leads to them feeling a lot like stage plays.

Progress:

I'm in. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to "try" or not, but six of my ten randomizer slots are currently dedicated to different official lists, and one of those slots is due to change to some other list soon, so chances are I'll hit at LEAST seven this month, and I usually hit plenty more just by chance. I'll make a note if I get frisky and start actively picking films to satisfy this challenge, rather than just seeing what I hit in the usual course of viewing.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

OK, I've made it somewhat more likely that I'll hit more than a few lists now. The randomizer slot that was due to change will be ever-evolving, so even though I should still see plenty of things on repeat lists or zero official lists, it should increase overall total of official lists hit this month.

1. Red-Headed Woman (1932) * 79 min.  Geoff King's Film Comedy
Slutty secretary seduces her boss in order to break up his marriage, after they are married she cheats on him with several other men. Not really a comedy, the few funny moments generally come from someone other than Jean Harlow. Unpleasant.

2. Mare Nostrum (1926) * 134 min. Silent Era's The Top 300 Silent Era Films
Epic romance/espionage/nautical tale, a little overlong but with outstanding model work and locations.

1. Os deuses E Os Mortos / Of Gods and the Undead (Ruy Guerra, 1970) Amos Vogel's Film as a Subversive Art

I looked forward to this, as I'd seen Guerra's earlier Os Fuzis and Os Cafajestes and really loved both of them. I love his long-take, always-moving camera style, made possible certainly in part by shooting silent and post-dubbing, but impressive any way you slice it, and there's a certain narrative play - not quite surrealism, but a certain oddness to both films that belies their generally realist stories, that I quite love. Had I remembered before watching that this was on the Vogel list, I might have put it off for a bit - and had I read a bit about it, I'm sure I would have. Just not in the mood for, for...whatever this was. I really don't know. Guerra's virtues are definitely present here - the camerawork is simply amazing, with many takes lasting 2-4 minutes (the last is I think around 8) and choreographed with great complexity around various moving characters - well, I should say, actors, as there aren't really any characters in a conventional sense. The music by Milton Nascimento is inventive and sometimes awesome, and I suspect (from reviews, and from a feeling watching the copy I had) that the color was pretty great originally - alas in a washed-out rip, it wasn't. But the chaotic mess of a narrative that really gave me nothing to hold onto besides a bare-bones depiction of a bandit who's been shot many times, and now is taking his revenge on the coffee plantation owners, mixed in with some weird religious and mythical shit - there simply wasn't any there there, for me. Perhaps a greater knowledge of Brazilian history and politics of this period would help, but I watched some other rather difficult political films from roughly the same era like Terra em Transe and got much more out of them, so I dunno. I'm sure much of this is meant to be taken allegorically or symbolically, but I just don't have the tools to interpret that, so I wasn't left with much. There's enough interest in the filmmaking qualities for me that I can call this marginally interesting at least but at the moment, I don't know what I watched and don't much care.
It was the truth, vivid and monstrous, that all the while he had waited the wait was itself his portion..

I'll probably participate in this one to some extend but not go all out. Currently out of 218 lists, there are 146 that I have something available to watch on (that I haven't gotten Platinum or have watched everything except lost films). I thought I'd start with a couple films from the new lists.

01. La pazza gioia a.k.a. Like Crazy -- Virzi, 2016 -- 6/10 -- David di Donatello - Best Italian Film
Two mentally unstable women escape from a psychiatric facility and go on a road trip. The acting is very solid, but the story drags out in the second half.

02. Pinocchio -- Antamoro, 1911 -- 7/10 -- Roy Menarini's Il Grande Cinema Italiano
Pure coincidence that I got the two Italian lists one right after the other. I have a soft spot for imaginative early film fantasies, so I may rate this higher than many (I'm guessing that I'd also rate 1914's The Patchwork Girl of Oz higher than many, as well). The very modern electronic soundtrack was uneven for me -- at times, I found it really great, and at other times, it was annoying.

03. Paths of Glory -- Kubrick, 1957 -- 10/10 -- rewatch -- IMDb's War Top 50
Just as great every time I see it.

04. Aujourd'hui a.k.a. Today -- Gomis, 2012 -- 7/10 -- FESPACO Film Festival - Étalon de Yennenga
Engaging story of the last day of a Senegalese man's life.

01. The March of Fools / Babodeuli haengjin, by Kil-jong Ha (1975) 7/10 KOFA's 100 Korean Films #3

Interesting in the portrayal it makes of aimless youth under korean dictatorship, having to hide their dreams, to behave as is expected from them, however grim their future in that society may be. Starting as a youth comedy, the movie slowly expands on its character's direction in life, and becomes more serious.

1. Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (2021) TSPDT's 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films
2. Eyimofe (This Is My Desire) (2020) The Criterion Collection

Two stories of Lagos residents who wish to leave are presented one after another in this Nigerian drama. While some parallels can be drawn between the two characters and stories, they are barely related to another and it feels downright jarring when the film suddenly shifts from its male protagonist to its female one. The woman's tale is also far less interesting than the man's as he has to confront crazy bureaucratic red tape when a relative dies intestate.

I'm going to try a bit of the gamification of ICM this month. I'll be tracking awards, ranks under 1000, T1000 Overshot, and sum of ranks. Here are my standing as of the first of the month:
Plat: 10
Gold: 15
Silver: 35
Bronze: 56
1000 or less: 160
T1000 Overshoot: 22404
Ranksum: 173582

1. Go Fish (1994) - BFI 100 American Independent #bronze
This got me a bronze on the BFI Flare list. Writing was clunky in this, and the acting didn't really elevate it. But I really appreciated it for just how lesbian it was. Like, the most lesbian film I've ever seen. All sorts of lesbian women in there, showing off the diversity in that "category" and different points of view. Definitely loved that aspect of it.

2. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) - Box Office Worldwide
Fucking garbage. The MCU at this point is nothing more than a shiny soap opera. Anything can happen for any reason and nothing at all matters. The special effects were good - and about the only thing worthwhile.

02. El cochecito, by Marco Ferreri (1960) 7,5/10 Nickel Odeón's Best Spanish Films #20

Quite a cruel satire, but I enjoyed how politically incorrect this whole story really is, while thought-provoking at the same time...

Equally fun the second time round, this is more accomplished than the average television series spin-off, aware of its roots and prepared to own the fact that it "the guys in charge of this stuff lack creativity". As a narrative, the film does not go anywhere unexpected. What really works though is Jonah Hill getting in "too deep" and over-enjoying his second chance at high school. The full reading out of Miranda Rights at the end is emotionally charged too.

2. A Vida Invisível de Eurídice Gusmão / Invisible Life (Karim Aïnouz, 2019) Cinema Tropical's Best Latin American Films 2010-2019

This was high on my to-see list for last month, as I was watching a lot of stuff for the Brazil poll, but I didn't get to it. Looking at the lists of others, this looks like it might be the highest-scoring film I hadn't seen, so I figured what they hey - and I also focused mostly on older films last month, so it was nice to see something newer.

It's a fine film. Maybe it's a great film. It's a film that *should* resonate really strongly with me - it's theme of two sisters who are separated yet living in close proximity, who miss each other for years and eventually decades, is one I can sort of identify with and certainly one that moves me; and it's portrayal of a paternalistic, conservative society and the ruination that redounds up women as a result is one that alas seems even more potent here in America than it did when the film came out, maybe almost as potent as when the bulk of the film takes place (the 1950s). It's a film of indescribably beautiful color, and after seeing this I'm going to be looking out for the name of Hélène Louvart, the French-born DP who shot this and who has a pretty remarkable CV so far - she also photographed the quite beautiful and colorful Lazzaro felice, and the much grittier and somber Never Rarely Sometimes Always, as well as one of the big awards contenders last year, The Lost Daughter. But for whatever reason, I didn't connect quite as strongly with this as many others seem to have.

The story is pretty simple, really - 20ish sisters Eurídice and Giulia live in Rio in 1951, daughters of a fairly prosperous baker, and each has a dream - Giulia, to run off with the Greek man she's fallen for, to Europe, and Eurídice, to study piano in Vienna. Giulia impulsive runs off one night with her amor, and the sisters' lives are changed forever when their father strives to keep Giulia from returning to the family - and her sister ends up married to a dullard who manages to delay her goals until...well, I don't want to spoil it. This is a film of desperation and longing and unfulfilled desires and dreams, and moments of happiness that never seem to linger, and lifetimes of resentments, usually unspoken in a society that won't tolerate them. It's fairly familiar stuff, but the filmmaking is excellent and the two lead actresses, Julia Stockler and Carol Duarte, are both terrific. And it did move me, and it did resonate but for whatever reason the last third just felt a bit too obvious and schematic to me. I'm very rarely a stickler for realism but it seems to me that the device of letters never reaching their intended person over such a long period, of neither being able to find the other for decades, simply wasn't that convincing, and in this case it's a bit of a problem - because despite the vibrant color and expressive camerawork, this is in the end a fairly straightforward narrative. Again - this doesn't kill the film - but it just made the emotional ending a little less powerful for me.
It was the truth, vivid and monstrous, that all the while he had waited the wait was itself his portion..
