Personal Top Lists Challenge
(Official, July 2022)

Welcome to the first edition of the Personal Top Lists Challenge! We will spend the seventh month of 2022 discovering some of the most interesting personal top lists on iCM.

Image
Ongaku (Kenji Iwaisawa, 2019)

The focus of this challenge will be on those personal lists that most likely will never become official on iCM because their creators are not celebrated sources but that nevertheless offer a valuable selection of films while reflecting their own interests, taste and personality.

Goal
Explore the interests and taste of the ICMF/iCM forum through their own personal top lists. Search for affinities.

Rules
- The challenge runs from Friday July 1st to Sunday July 31st (use your local time).
- Every participant (and the host) can nominate one personal top list* created by other ICMF/iCM member.
- Participants can watch films from any nominated top list.
- Rewatching is allowed.
- A feature film (at least 40 minutes) counts as one point.
- 80 minutes of short films or miniseries/TV episodes count as one point.
- Include year of release and top list name** when listing your viewings. Links to iCM are greatly appreciated.
- Do not edit your posts except for minor corrections.
- Fair play, please: no hit-and-run nominations, entire single speed watching, no top-rankers popping up in the last minute, etc.

* Only original iCM lists that consist of a personal selection of films are allowed. They may be lists submitted to ICMF polls, yearly top 10s, guilty pleasures, recent favourites, canons or anti-canons, views on a particular theme, genre favourites, etc.; but not lists made for statistical purposes, generic compilations, watchlists, filmographies, etc. In case of doubt, just ask.
** For the sake of simplicity, if they happen to be on several top lists pick only one.

This challenge springs from an original idea by beavis. Big thanks to him and all the voters that made it official.

I agree -- that is indeed a much better topic title. Kudos. :worship:

And thanks for getting this thread up before the start of the month. A+ for punctuality.

I am going for Mothravka’s “500<400 2020” list.
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/500d ... mothravka/

Besides on ICM they are also active on this forum, but I chose the list purely on what I have already seen and still want to see from it. There are a few lists on ICM (and a few on LB only) that I could have gone for (if allowed, looking at the rules as they are now specified ;)), as they are very close to my taste and to what I would like to explore at the moment, but the heavy focus on Indian and Japanese cinema amongst films I still had to see from this one made me prefer it above all others.

Currently I’ve seen 482/777 titles, giving me a remaining 295 to go for. Of that set I have almost 90 ready to watch, either in my DVD/BR collection or on harddisk/youtube and even two Netflix options! (L'oeil du malin, Sången om den eldröda blomman).

Of the 482 seen I have a whopping 72 likes (my total seen on ICM is 14664 with 657 favorites, so this relatively small set of seen titles containing more than 10% of my favorites feels really good). Amongst them titles like Rengoku eroica, Agatha et les lectures illimitées, Siddeshwari, Der Rosenkönig, Kamen, Absences répétées, Tsuitô no zawameki, Na wylot, Trys dienos, Elippathayam, À Flor do Mar, Szindbád, Aquele Querido Mês de Agosto, Les rendez-vous d'Anna, Meshi, and also relatively new movies that not much people have seen (yet) like the amazing “Ti imas noc” or “Drift”.

Of those to look forward too besides the mentioned Netflix films, I can continue my current Hungarian streak with the likes of A kis Valentinó and Csontváry, I can catch up on a lot of Doubling titles like The Sea and Poison, Dieu sait quoi, Johan, Underground, Uwasa no onna, Shinobugawa, Esthappan or Turumba. I have a lot of more recent options, including a few Korean movies I have been looking forward to a lot (Winter's Night and Ode to the Goose). There are a lot of long movies this challenge would give me the final push for like Tih Minh, Diary, Gambling, Gods and LSD, Die große Stille, De grote vakantie, Ghatashraddha, Reisender Krieger and Mafrouza - Oh la nuit!. Of that last Egyptian documentary I have a DVD box containing all Mafrouza movies, so that would be also a perfect opportunity to digress into that avenue. There are a few other African classics I still need to check out like Finye and Emitaï and there is a seemingly endless stream of even more obscure potential gold / gems. For instance I have underseen titles ready like The Wind Is Driving Him Toward the Open Sea, Underground Fragrance, Barravento, Aapothkalin Trikalika, O Desafio, Nirakar Chhaya, Genet à Chatila, Pehla Adhyay…

So, really looking forward to exploring all this, ready for this challenge!!!

And I think I’ll stick to this one list after all… less admin to look into ;)

I have to say, going into this month I was thinking there would be no way I would participate in this challenge. Didn't seem to be up my alley. However, after reading the OP and seeing what the challenge will be about, I have changed my tune. This sounds like it could be a unique challenge, and I am /in!

The list I am nominating is mathiasa's "bad list of romance": https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/bad+ ... /mathiasa/

I found this list as I was poking around for possible personal lists to nominate, and I think it's just about perfect. Mathias created this for our official Romance poll in 2020 just a couple months before his passing. I'm at 45/146 currently and there are many unchecked films that I would like to explore here. Hopefully having this list as part of this challenge will give us a way to keep Mathias in our memory as an important member of the community; gone, but never forgotten.

Thanks, I just had to apply the "less is more" formula to your preliminary title. I also had other options in mind but weren't as clear and concise as this one.

So it seems I've finally made something right! In a way, yes, this challenge is going to be a bit singular for at least a reason: it is our own lists that will be the protagonists. Thanks and welcome.

Very sad to read that again but that's a wonderful idea.

So before I participate or anything I just wanted to clarify the rules. So instead of just working on one persons list we are just compiling all movies from nominated lists and can pick any movie from all nominated lists?

This sounds like I will actually like this idea compared to the original idea and am actually going to participate instead of focusing on the Unofficial challenge but I just have a few questions?

Will you be putting all films into one master list to make it easier to find what films are eligible?
With nominating a list are you able to nominate your own list, but of course watch movies from the other lists (unless you just happen to rewatch a movie from your own)? (I think I already know this answer as I just reread the OP before posting and believe I answered the question but I will still ask)

I'll nominate sol's Amazing Obscurities list:
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/500d ... ties/sol-/

It looks like it has a significant amount of films I own I haven't watched on it which is always going to be a major deciding factor for me :D

I would like to nominate Joachim's favorite <400 because I appreciate the variety of films from different genres and times here. I've had some of them on my watchlist for a long time. So I hope to find a few more films here for the upcoming poll in September and I'm excited to see how the challenge develops.

While I was tempted to nominate one of PdA's lists with 8,000 movies, I'm going to go with the more moderately sized list of Sebby's favorites:

Making a master list would result in a somewhat impersonal mix of styles and purposes ruining thus the very essence of the challenge; you couldn't tell whose choice are the films you check plus the very resulting size of combining all the lists together could make it unmanageable. You have to go to the individual level and explore each list in its own.

Yes, you do already know the answer: no self-promotion. I think there are quite a few interesting personal lists on iCM and many others that, if not very distinctive, at least have a solid selection of films. Anyway, if you can't make up your mind, nominating a list is not mandatory.

Yeah, PdA's lists are an appealing pick, I also have one in mind. Anyway, sorry, but iMDB will not do (I'm not a registered user), I need iCM lists to perform my hosting duties (see the * in the rules?).

My original idea felt/was incredibly niché, but I do indeed like the way it has turned out now and congratulate sortile9io on a strong opening post. I probably still going to stick to my own list choice, so won't really get into the spirit of things as they now stand, but I hope this challenge now gets a bit more positive remarks, like yours, as previously people have been mostly sceptic, at best.

Wishing everybody a great month of viewing here!

I'm truly flattered. Especially since I'm not even sure if I will participate in this challenge. I'll try to avoid updating the list too much during the month, but I am hoping to be able to sneak some more Canuck gems on there.

Since I'm just behind 72aicm, why not get an inspiration from him and look into his <400 list ?
That's why I will nominate for the challenge this list :

I am definitely in for this challenge, but I wanted to know whether this witch movies list was ok? I think it started off as an IMDB list and then they imported it to ICM. So because it originated on IMDB, I wasn't sure if it was OK or not.

If not / I'm still not 100% decided on which list to nominate, I'm thinking of these three as alternatives - so let me know if any aren't eligible.

Lucifer Rising
Sapphic / Lesbian films
Strange Encounters

I think my partner wants to work on the sappho list the most, but I'd like to work more on the witch list (if eligible), so I'm still up in the air about all of this still, but would like an official inquiry into acceptability before proceeding, thanks! :$

OK well since I can't nominate my own list (which is a shame since I feel like my Recommendations for Cinephiles list is perfect for this challenge) I went back to last years 500<400 countdown and checked the affinities list. My best affinity was FilmBantha (which makes sense) so I moved his nomination list from IMDb to iCM and nominate it:
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/film ... 00/zzzorf/

Also, can we please get all nominated lists added to the OP for easy finding?

The WLW/Sapphic/Lesbian list is a compilation made by Armoreska out of several heterogeneous outside sources that is just trying to be comprehensive, so it's definitely a no. It would be OK if he had himself handpicked his favourites or what he considers the most valuable.

There is little information about the other three but they also seem pretty generic listings to me without any personal selection of favourites or the like. Maybe somebody can correct me and tell something about them I'm missing, otherwise I have to say no too. And, I'm really sorry because I'd like to see some sub-genre top lists like those in this challenge.

As an alternative, you could try searching our past horror and LGBT polls. Just remember that the word personal in the title of this challenge does not refer to the personal tag in iCM.

Thank you. Though I feel bad you only chose it because I said so just before. Anyway I am in process of the monthly update so it will have 10 changes within the next day but that is mostly a few popular movies being replaced by less known.

Not really actually. I looked through the <400 nominations from last year yesterday and wanted to go with 72aicm's list (it seemed I had the most overlap with him), but didn't post on time and cinephage already nominated it. So I looked a bit through the forum and got reminded of your list.

I would argue that Strange Encounters should at least qualify - since they're very highly curative of the list and placing things on it as a sort of "best of batshit weird films". As it isn't just a random list but something that's been carefully curated to represent a certain aesthetic. I'm only going to manage watching like four films from this anyway for the month, so its not like I'm gunning for a high placement - I just want to watch these wild and fun obscure gems that are hiding out there - and there doesn't seem to be a list for that - at least that I could find. I'd argue the same about the Witch list - because it also seems curated to me as a sort of "favorites" - because why else is there only one Harry Potter film on there - or some of the other odd inclusions. But whatever.

I'm confused by the rules + I'm not the most cognizant person. But I can't nominate a list that came from a book or some critic - such as this?

What about the following lists?

Alternative Horror
Hidden Family Gems
Fantastic Fantasy Flics
Flavo's Top Horror

And I have to say - for a website built entirely on lists, the selection available is pitiful - especially for more obscure genre stuff.

If anyone can help me find a list that will qualify and is up my alley? :ph43r:

This one wouldn't be. The key idea is that the list should be a list of personal favorites by a user on ICM. So stuff compiled from books or other websites wouldn't work.

The last three of those I would think would qualify. The first one I'm not sure. Dunno what it's referencing. Who is Sandi?

^^^ A simple explanation. And that's right, Minkin, just pick one of the the last three and you're fine.

1. Stranger by the Lake (2013) - mathiasa's and Sebby's lists

Great movie. While I am not a part of the French cruising world, this film appears to be a very honest portrayal of that life. Set entirely at a clothing-optional lake and the nearby woods where men meet for anonymous sex (every shot happens here, and nearly every scene begins with a car driving to the lake at the start of a new day), the film quickly casts a spell that persists for the entire runtime. The setting and cinematography are top notch, with so many sun-drenched, sunset, and twilight images. And the plot of the film works both as a standard thriller, but also as a bubbling-under-the-surface allegory for the dangers of unsafe sex, and gay anonymous sex specifically. Why do men risk danger in pursuit of lust? What do they sacrifice? Is it worth it, and can it be helped? All of these questions and more are explored frankly and honestly in this film. Added to my list of favorites.

You only have to include one list (much in the way we did in the One Film from Each iCM List Challenge). Tracking all the lists (including those that may be nominated later on) every film we check is on is going to be a bit bothersome for all of us. And if we include only some, the rankings will be arbitrarily biased. I'll add a note to the rules to make it clear.

Ahh, makes sense I’ll do that going forward. Put this one down for mathiasa’s list then please :)

My best affinity was FilmBantha (which makes sense) so I moved his nomination list from IMDb to iCM and nominate it:

Also, can we please get all nominated lists added to the OP for easy finding?
Wow, I'm honoured! Fingers crossed you find some gems amongst my list  hopefully the affinity stats serve you well

I wasn't planning to participate in any challenges this month, im focusing mainly on the icmff. Though I will certainly reciprocate by watching some films from your 1000 recommendations for all cinephiles during the month. There's plenty on there I'm eager to see and I think it's cool that you do a monthly update of the list :D

I've already got a few marked ready to go so it shouldn't be to hard to find gems in them. As to the iCMFFF and my particular list, you will find a bit of crossover with my noms (and those I've watched from the rest of you) within that list.

01. Wrony, by Dorota Kedzierzawska (1994) 9/10 (#291 on https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/72ai ... 00/72aicm/)

This is really a bitterweet film, which I am glad to have seen. I didn't know the director either, and will certainly try to explore more of her cinema...

First update, all from Mothravka's 500<400 2020 list

1. Gambling, Gods and LSD (2002) 7
Technically well done and it does contain a lot of interesting scenes, but it has got nothing interesting/coherent to say. The director is interested in something between the seeking of pleasure and the seeking of meaning in life and goes to some of the obvious places and people when you think of a subject like that... maybe my tolerance for nonsense is just too low. I liked the watching, but this is not for me really.

2. Dieu sait quoi (1994) 6
Ode to a prose poet, in a mostly visual way... but not knowing the poet really makes it a kind of stretch in the long form. The images are very nicely shot and I like the minimalist approach, but, as happened before with this director, I fail to be captivated by any of it.

3. Älskande par (1964) 7.5
This one really describes the world as the world of men, hard and self absorbed men, and the plight of women in it. It also brushes with the existence of homosexuality in this place where even the thought of that being accepted in unacceptable. And the first World War is starting... will the world have changed after that calamity? Both now as in 1964 we know it hasn't, not really, but all the same these "loving" couples felt to be played to a point of parody, especially the doctor comes across as unbelievably harsh...
Spoiler
4. a selection of shorts:
Jeu (2006) 4 min
Odchádza clovek (1968) 28 min
Água Forte (2018) 15 min
Alone (1964) 13 min
Aubade (2010) 12 min
Mass for the Dakota Sioux (1964) 24 min
Buried in Light (2016) 7 min
Simtameciu godos (1969) 17 min
Grim (1985) 7 min
Moment (1968) 13 min
Spoiler
140 min = 1 point and 60 min to carry over
This list contains a wealth of avant-garde shorts, so to really get into the spirit of it I had to make a selection of those too, and they are lovely. The animation of Schwizgebel (Jeu) is always impressive, Equally technically impressive and "space expanding" is Takashi Ito's Grim. Although I do like Dwoskin a lot, I feel his two shorts selected here were very similar and not very interesting. Água Forte had the best soundtrack and used it together with filmstock imperfections/manipulations to create a wonderful mood.
