Horror Challenge (Official, October 2021)

The Official 2021 Horror Challenge!

Image

Goal.
Watch as many movies as you can that fit into the horror genre. Maybe engage in a little resilience training during COVID-19 season, since apparently this god-damned pandemic is never going to end. If you are in doubt whether a movie counts or not, just ask.

Horrifying facts: Last year, the Horror Challenge was the busiest challenge we've ever had on this forum, with folks collectively earning 3276 points. Not only that, 100 points for an individual person wouldn't even put you in the top 10. Are we going to beat that?

Rules.
- A feature film (Anything over 40 minutes) counts as one entry
- A total of 80 minutes of short films count as one entry
- For Mini-Series/TV series, the standard 40/80 rule applies.
- Shorts/Episodes can be mixed and matched to make the 80-minute runtime requirement.
- Rewatches allowed.

Challenge runs from DUSK 30 September 2021 - SUNRISE 1 November 2021.

I'm open to more suggestions for lists.

Bonus challenges!
We have four bonus challenges again this year. The first two are passive - everyone will be playing as I'm collecting the data myself. For the other two, I’ll be tracking things manually, so if you want to play, please use the appropriate hashtags to indicate which bonus challenge your film counts for. When posting screenshots, please put them in a spoiler tag to make the thread a bit more readable. Also, a film may count for multiple bonus challenges, but not for multiple entries within that bonus challenge.

Bonus Challenge #1: Jigsaw Challenge
Image

Let's play a game. Lower stakes than a game for your life, but horrifying nonetheless. Solve the loosely-horror-themed clues to earn points. The winner will have to live with the knowledge that they got inside my mind... a little too well.

OP looks great maxwell, and the bonus challenges sound fun. My goal is 31 horror films in 31 days, so, I won’t be topping the charts by any means. Just trying to fill in some of my horror movie gaps through the challenge.

This shouldn't replace the highest rated horror list you already listed, but I made a temporary top 500 highest rated horror based on the new pool of lists we've been collecting: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/high ... htysparks/. The lowest rated films have an average rating of 6.17.

Just a quick disclaimer/heads-up before this kicks into gear:

This is a busy and relatively detailed challenge, so given that I'm rusty on hosting, I'm inevitably going to screw up. Several times. So keep an eye on the OP - I'll have it updated at least daily - and if something seems off for you, let me know, and I'll get it fixed.

Happy Horror!

 Maybe if I didn't have to go back to work in a little over a week, I would consider it. That said, I have only managed to crest over 100 viewings in a single month once before, so if I make a century again during October it will be an achievement in itself. We'll see.

The sun has set over here in the west, almost two hours ago now, so already got my first viewing in which allows me to say:

It starts! First in. :D

1. The House Of The Devil (2009)

Image

As per Ti West's superior The Innkeepers, this is a deliberately slow-paced affair with little in the way of overt horror for the entire first hour. I found that all the restraint served The House of the Devil less well than Innkeepers, however, since it is always blatantly obvious here what is going on (even if our protagonist remains naïve). The blood and gore is certainly quite decent once things get going though and Tom Noonan plays creepy yet polite so well.

As dusk settles over Perth, mightysparks can't wait 'til dawn. No longer caring about trivial matters like settling the debate over Team Edward. vs Team Jacob, she's focused purely on survival. Sandwiched in between "it's a bit chilly out" season and "why the fuck is everything on fire?!?" season, it's vampire season - one of the more blood-suckingly terrifying seasons of Australia. Like everything else in Australia, the vampires are trying to kill you. Unlike everything else in Australia, vampires tend to live in cities, making them much more likely to have human contact. Which is unfortunate, since mightysparks has to run to the store. For beer. You know - the necessities. Needing protection on this journey, she's carrying the usual suspects - wooden stake, cloves of garlic, and the advice that all you gotta do is put two sticks together and you got a cross. Should she survive this night, what actor should mightysparks thank for such sage advice?

Going a little mad sometimes.
1. The House Of The Devil (2009)
2. Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964)

Image

This is often cited as one of the better H.G. Lewis films, probably due to the arguable satire of centennial commemorations. This is certainly no better acted than the average Lewis offering and there are large lulls in between the gore/splatter scenes. The splatter is great though. Most notable is a grueling bit in which a victim is placed in a spiked barrel and rolled down a hill. The upbeat pro-Confederate theme song is quite creepy too and sets the tone well.

I found this a bit hard to get into the film with it unclear whether the filmmakers were trying for black comedy laughs or genuine scares. For quite a while, the movie zigzags somewhat awkwardly between torture porn and simple captivity thrills. The project eventually finds its feet though as the protagonist decides to become compliant, leading to rivalry with her other 'siblings', and overall the film works really well as a take on dysfunctional families.

01. 3.5* - No One Gets Out Alive by Santiago Menghini (2021)

A very capable haunted house flick that deserves bonus points for an ending that is pretty out there. Not extremely gory or nasty, just ... out there. It also helps that director Menghini looks very much in control from start to finish, meticulously building up the tension before unleashing the finale. Ambar sneaks into the USA, hoping she can find work there to pay for her fake passport. She ends up staying in a boarding home, run by a rather odd man. It doesn't take long before Ambar starts hearing sounds and seeing figures in the shadows, it's clear the home is housing a dark secret. The performances are decent, but it's the mix of the eerie cinematography and the moody soundtrack that makes sure the tension is grounded. Someone around the midpoint I started to wonder whether the film would be able to bring anything new to the table, the ending surely shut me up. Good stuff.

1. Ojingeo Geim [Squid Game] (2021): 9/10
2. Color out of Space (2019): 10/10

tags (am i doing this correctly?)
Spoiler
#BINGO B2 for Color out of Space and #VIRUS for Color out of Space
I know I didn't watch all of Squid Game after dusk. That's why i'm just using it as one entry point (while theoretically i could split in 8 but yeah, didn't expect it to be horror in the first place).

Good start, as i'm blown away twice. I think this is the best tv series i've ever seen. And I didn't expect to like Color out of Space this much. I like it even more than Mandy.

I was also planning on only starting tomorrow, but given the bad weather conditions expected saturday evening & night (and also partly tomorrow), i wanted to start already, because i'm probably not going to be able to enjoy a movie with these wind gusts and lots of rain that will be expected, or at least not a kind of movie that is intended to be visually and auditary stimulating which the kind of horrors are that i like to watch.

It's a tradition with the Horror challenge - From Dusk Til Dawn if you will. ;)

That works - you could also just throw the tags right next to the movie. No need to spoiler them (unless the tags are actually spoilers).
