23. Zama -- Martel, Argentina, 2017

Strong, suffocating portrayal of a man wading through New World bureaucracy for his long-overdue transfer from Argentina in the eighteenth century. I didn't love it quite as much as I thought I would, but it was still a solid, worthwhile experience.

Forced to work in goldmines under brutal conditions, two slaves eventually learn kickboxing kung fu to help them escape. The fight choreography is absolutely awesome here. Trouble is, the slaves don't even begin to learn their wild kung fu moves until the final 40 minutes. Also, while working in the mines is dangerous, they actually seem to have a decent life as slaves: they are allowed to bathe, are well-fed and have the spare time to learn kung fu...

Image

Constantly critical of his fellow city dwellers who equate acting civilised with eating, dressing and talking like white men, a proud African sculptor returns to his "bush" hometown in this brief feature from Gabon. Writer-director Philippe Mory gives an effective performance in the lead role; his annoyance at culture and tradition that seems to be fading away is heartfelt. Once he reaches his hometown though, the film becomes a somewhat uneven ride.

5. Blood Machines (Joly-Gonfard-Hernandez, 2019) 54 checks, 0 official lists, France Image
Reminiscent of the work of Panos Cosmatos, this is essentially a music video that was stretched to feature length. The visuals and music are really striking, although the flimsy sci-fi plot and stilted acting brings it down.

6. Vicious Fun (Calahan, 2020) 25 checks, 0 official lists, Canada Image
Horror-comedy where a man finds himself up against a team-up of cartoonish serial killers. Like Blood Machines, this is another film inflected by 80s neon style. When it goes for horror, the film works reasonably well, but the comedy falls flat due to weak gags and variable acting — I found Evan Marsh particularly irritating with his constant whining and wisecracks.
4/10

7. Guns Akimbo (Howden, 2019) 770 checks, 0 official lists, New Zealand Image
Another offbeat acting role for Radcliffe, starring in what is essentially a nerdy version of Crank. Filled with video-game effects, frenetic energy and self-referentiality, it's a lot of fun, although it does overload on the clichés and plot armour towards the end. The fact that it's parodying them doesn't change the fact that it's still employing them. Samara Weaving is great support.

88. Voodoo Man (St Vincent and the Grenadines, 2014) - 0/10
89. The Worthy (United Arab Emirates, 2016) - 4/10
90. The Wild Wild Rose (Hong Kong, 1960) - 7/10

Voodoo Man must be the worst film I’ve seen so far for this challenge.

24. Too Late to Die Young (Chile, 2018) * 110 min.
25. Mythily Veendum Varunnu (India, 2017) * 88 min.
26. Therapy (Cameroon, 2020) * 84 min.

Too Late to Die Young has been compared to the movies of Lucrecia Martel, but writer-director Dominga Sotomayor is more interested in the teens and pre-adolescents than the rather confused and aimless adults. Mythily Veendum Varunnu would have been better if it had been a real horror movie, but took forever to get to its extremely mild scares, then added a couple stupid plot twists. Therapy was a sincere but slow story of a woman depressed after the birth of her child, with a plot twist telegraphed from the start. I haven't seen any of his movies, but I also have my doubts about its offering of Tyler Perry as a great thinker.

I gave it 6/10 when I watched it for the Caribbean challenge 2019 but don't remember too much about it.

16. 3.0* - The Tin Drum [Die Blechtrommel] by Volker Schlöndorff (1979) Germany

A surprisingly fun, quirky and unique film. I generally don't expect too much from Cannes winners, and The Tin Drum does have a couple of predictable flaws, but overall this felt quite fresh and different. It was almost like watching a precursor to the work of Kusturica and/or Jeunet. Oskar is a young boy who stops growing after falling from a flight of stairs. People feel sorry for him and tend to underestimate the boy, but as he ages, he learns to makes excellent use of his appearance to get whatever he wants. With World War II developing in the background, Oskar just tries to make the best of his life. Bennent's performance is truly excellent, his character is also very intriguing. A mix of innocence and cunning that challenges the viewer. The direction is pleasant, with slightly absurd and exaggerated moments that keep you on your toes. The WWII setting feels a bit redundant though and the runtime is a bit too long, other than that this turned out to be a nice discovery.

40. Kinatay a.k.a. The Execution of P. (Brillante Mendoza, 2009, Philippines) - 5/10

Plays a bit too long with the same emotion. Didn't care either for the "truer-than-life" cinematography that made the movie famous.

41. Dharmaga tongjoguro kan kkadalgun a.k.a. Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East? (Bae Yong-kyun, 1989, South Korea) - 5.5/10

Felt like Buddhism 101 i.d. a bit too didactic. Expected stronger visuals too, that would have made the slowness more bearable than it was.

34. Kronika wypadków milosnych (1986, Poland) - 6/10 - This was my third Andrzej Wajda movie and while it wasn't as good as the others it still had his brilliance on offer. I think if parts of the movie made a bit more sense to me a higher rating would have been in the offering.

35. Thale (2012, Norway) - 7/10 - A nice little tight horror that was just missing a little spark that maybe a longer running time would have offered to put in some missing bits.

Voodoo Man must be the worst film I’ve seen so far for this challenge.
With all these 0/10 and 1/10 films, you don't really seem to being enjoying this challenge, Trav. :( Perhaps you can find a different way of selecting what to view? I'm not sure what process you are using, but maybe it would be better to focus on all of the countries with a lot of filmic output first, giving you the most choice, before tackling countries like St. Vincent for which the options of what to watch are quite limited? I'm also curious about your film choices beyond the individual countries; even for a lot of countries with smaller output like Suriname there is stuff easily available with higher IMDb scores than what you saw. Me? I'm getting through a lot of horror/thriller stuff because that's what I'm into. I just haven't been able to nail how you are choosing your own viewings.

And my apologies if it seems nosey to ask... I just hate to see you winning a challenge through painful film watching. Oh, and you need not worry about me overtaking you for top spot. I'm back at work tomorrow, so I will NOT be hitting triple digits in this challenge...

This has earned comparisons to The Raid and if anything it is more unrelenting than that, full of impressively choreographed fights to the death with assassins teeming of every single corner; this is not a good film to watch if you have a heart condition. For what it excels at (fights, realistic bloodletting, some amazing exterior lighting -- see above), the film has some definite narrative weaknesses, but it's all very watchable and compelling to the end.

If I wasn't enjoying the challenge, I wouldn't be watching so much, sol. It was always a goal of mine to see a movie from every country (where possible) and since I'm off work this month as well (hence the greater numbers), I thought this might finally be the time to explore this specific goal. I thus deliberately choose countries with less filmic output than others which I wouldn't watch otherwise. I took inspiration from the Conquer the World thread, and honestly went with what I could find. In a few years, perhaps, I'll adjust the goal to see one film I like per country.

27. The Sea (Iceland, 2002) * 109 min.

Adult children are called home by their father to be advised of his decisions regarding the family business, leading to exposure of traumatic family history. An uneasy mix of comedy and drama elicits laughs concerning things that aren't funny, and almost everyone ranges from unpleasant to corrupt to irredeemably evil, so it is not a pleasant watch.

7. The Bodyguard (Tajikistan, 1979)
Ten years ago, Lincoln Center in New York did a series on Soviet "Osterns." I saw White Sun of the Desert and The Horsemen. A friend of mine saw The Bodyguard and told me it was great. Now, finally, I got a chance to see it. Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to the hype. A story of the Basmachi Rebellion during the 1920s, it suffers from a lack of coherence and no character depth. On the other hand, there's plenty of gorgeous Tajik scenery and a cool, albeit anachronistic rock score.

8. Ashes in the Snow (Lithuania, 2018)
A Lithuanian family that has been aiding dissidents following the Soviet conquest of 1940 is deported to the gulag in Siberia. Though not as good as Risttuules (to which it is destined to be compared), this is still quality, heart-rending drama and a worthy exploration of individual suffering/autonomy within a totalitarian society. The only problem is a quick resolution that doesn't do justice to the story. My father, only a toddler then, was himself deported along with his family to a Siberian gulag during the war. And though their circumstances were certainly better than those endured by the Lithuanians in this movie (my family was considered refugees rather than enemies of the state), there was still plenty of suffering. I've thought often of that first fateful train journey to the east, a step into a future in which the only unknown was the degree of harshness, and the strength it took to see all those grim years coming and endure anyway.

Ah, okay. Good to know that you're still enjoying the challenge, and I would possibly consider doing something similar if I had the entire month off. I am of course guilty myself of watching some stuff from less prolific countries that I would not have prioritised otherwise (Papa Mau; that Pitcairn documentary) but I have only seen one film this month that I hated, and I have only seen three films that are less than a 5/10 in my books. Half your viewings seem to be below 5/10, so please forgive my curiosity, and yeah, good to know that you're getting something out of the challenge even with so many movie dislikes.

P.S.: I'd recommend The Road Movie as a better Belarusian film and Wan Pipel as a better Surinamese film when this challenge rolls around again. ;)

This has been compared to Madagascar, but the character designs are far classier (and some of the animation is simply beautiful) and the characters themselves are actually likeable, unlike the annoying, shrill animals in Madagascar. The final third of the movie is weaker than the first two thirds as copious time is dedicated to aliens on generic spacecrafts. Whenever the film stays in the jungles or wild plains of Africa though, it is a lot of fun to watch.

7. The Mitchells vs the Machines (Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe, 2021) 7/10 Canada

Feels a bit dirty to count this as Canadian, but rules are rules I guess... It would be "worse" to count it as Hong Kong at least. Had fun with this one, some genuinely funny parts.

8. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (Aditya Chopra, 1995) 5/10 India

As cliched as they come. But the main theme is a real earmworm, which has to account for something. I also really like most of the musical/music scenes, wish there were more of them over the 3 hour + runtime. More a fan of the heart on the sleeve quirkiness in the beginning (in Europe) than the familiar wedding drama it becomes towards the second half.

9. The Laser Man / Lasermannen (Mikael Marcimain, 2005) 8/10 Sweden

Perhaps a slightly overlooked miniseries? I thought it was a really fascinating look into a rascist terrorist and the failures of institutions and the police. The cases it is based on are well known in Scandinavia, but I had forgotten a lot of interesting details. "Discovered" it through the FLM list!

Teenagers are killed off in between drunken partying here. The neon party lights provide some great visuals and there is much to like in the notion of teens too busy partying to notice their friends dying. Unfortunately, the teens feel interchangeable and none of them are likeable. The reason why they are being killed off is also eventually revealed to be something they did in the past that is never shown or mentioned until the teens begin to look for a motive.

sol wrote: July 18th, 2021, 4:24 am With all these 0/10 and 1/10 films, you don't really seem to being enjoying this challenge, Trav. :(
If I wasn't enjoying the challenge, I wouldn't be watching so much, sol.

P.S.: I'd recommend The Road Movie as a better Belarusian film and Wan Pipel as a better Surinamese film when this challenge rolls around again. ;)
No worries. I may have become less forgiving rating wise over the years, I guess, but I measure the success of a month less by the disliked and more by the great movies I’ve seen anyway. Maybe our rating systems do differ a little as well.
Some of the movies were really bad though, and I make use of the entire scale for that. :D Noted the mentioned films.

93. The Red Bowmen (Papua New Guinea, 1978) - 5/10
94. The Wedding Party (Nigeria, 2016) - 2/10
95. Munyurangabo (Rwanda, 2007) - 5/10

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

On mobile so only writing English translations of the titles

7. Son of the White Mare (Hungary, 1981, Marcell Jankovics) (Rewatch) - Friend wanted to watch something trippy and this had just popped up on Criterion, so it was a perfect fit. Love the style of this, even with the simplistic story. Always down to rewatch this one. 9/10

8. Child of Peach (Taiwan, 1987, Chen Chun-Liang, Chung-Hsing Chao) - The Washington Psychotronic Film Sosiety streamed this movie, and I’m very glad to have watched it. Never thought I would see a dog and monkey peeing into bowls in a movie. Fun style, will watch the sequel. 6/10

9. My Mexican Bretzel(Spain, 2019, Nuria Gimenez) - Set over footage the director found in her Grandfathers possessions, she wrote a fake diary for fictional characters. The diary entries over the found footage worked very well. 7/10

10. Gary of the Pacific (Cook Islands, 2017, Jarrod Holt) - I can’t believe in 2017 someone wrote a movie with a running joke in it about a Prince Albert piercing. Feel bad that this is the only feature to represent the Cook Islands. 1/10

11. Yasmine (Brunei Darussalam, 2014, Siti Kamaluddin) - Fighting scenes were fine, but story was a little weak. 4/10

12. Ilo Ilo (Singapore, 2013, Anthony Chen) - Easily the best new movie I’ve watched for this month’s challenge. Does such a great job of invoking a feeling of a time period. 8/10

13. Mother of All Sectrets (Bermuda, 2018, Lucinda Spurling) Fine lifetime type thriller, but nothing special. 4/10

14. Get Away to Pitcairn (Pitcairn, 2014, Marek Ulan-Szymanski) - Fine documentary about Pitcairn. 5/10

15. Pope Francis: A Man of His World (Holy See, 2018, Wim Wenders) - Interesting to hear Pope Francis’ beliefs on various subjects. 7/10
Spoiler
1. Tampopo (Japan, 1985, Juzo Itami) (Rewatch) - 8/10

2. Leitis in Waiting (Tonga, 2018, Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu) - 6/10

3. Yume Go Kale (A Piece of the Cake) (Vanuatu, 2016, Peter Walker) - 4/10

4. Instant Justice (Gibraltar, 1986, Craig T. Rumar) - 2/10

5. The Postcard (Morocco, 2020) 6/10

6. Aguirre, the Wrath of God (Peru, 1972, Werner Herzog) (Rewatch) - 7/10

Mistake Shorts :$
a. Tuna: A Fish with a Special Place in My Heart (Palau, 2012, Ongerung Kambes Kesolei) - PNA Tuna was nice enough to put this back on their youtube channel after I emailed them about this. Cute doc about the director reflecting on his childhood and what tuna meant to him during it. 7/10 - 14 min
b. Nauru 1998 (Nauru, 2007) - Not much to talk of, just a few shots from Nauru. 5/10 - 3 min
c. Niue: This is Your Land (Niue, 2003, Mella Lahina) - Travelogue from Mella, who lived her whole life in Austrailia and New Zealand, trying to connect with her Niue heritage. 4/10 - 14 min
d. Liquid Love (Seychelles, 2013, Pilli Cortese) - Pretty cliche, but fun underwater shots. 2/10 - 8 min
e. St Kitts (Saint Kitts and Nevis, 2009, Dave Weber) - Travelogue from someone who arrived on a cruise ship, absolutely terrible, should be removed from imdb. Only for someone desperate to see something from Saint Kitts and Nevis. 1/10 - 4 min
f. The Last Alchemist (San Marino, 2012, Michele Massari) - Fun little fantasy/horror story, but not totally solid by the end. Set design and feeling were good though. 6/10 - 30 min
g. Our Marine World Heritage (Cocos Islands, 2010) - UNESCO short about some of the Marine World Heritage sites, including Cocos Islands. Hard to find the correct version though, there was another short with the same name but different narrator that included different Marine World Heritage sites. Maybe mislabeled on imdb. 5/10 - 4 min
h. Marisa at Brunch (eSwatini, 2016, Jonathan Smith) - short comedy sketch, it was alright. 5/10 - 5 min
