Discovering that a time machine left at his patent office creates duplicates of those who use it, a bureaucrat hatches an underhanded plan to increase productivity in this kooky Brazilian comedy. An employee catches onto the scheme but has trouble explaining it to anyone he tries to report it to and some of the film's funniest scenes involve his emergency service calls being redirected and being told that 48 hours need to have elapsed before complaining (!).

7. La muerte de un burócrata (CUBA, 1966) 4/10
A man is buried with his union card but when his wife is unable to claim her pension, her nephew attempts to recover the card and faces a series of struggles. Watching this film is a chore and it's difficult to find the comedy buried underneath all the boredom. It's not super dry or unclear where at least some of the humour is supposed to be. There are a lot of references to other films and comedic styles but none of them are actually amusing. The main character faces one problem after another as he tries to exhume his uncle, get him reburied, get forms stamped etc. There's always something happening and the film keeps itself going but it's just never interesting or entertaining.

Trying to repair a marriage shattered by the death of their daughter, a Swedish couple go camping in the woods where they become stuck in a time loop with a trio of eccentric murderers in this odd little film. Thematically, this is an easy movie to dissect with a literal never-ending cycle of grief and pain; as a narrative though, the whole thing is ill-explained and ultimately a tad unsatisfying with no rules or clarity regarding how the time loop operates.

10. 1.5* - Zama by Lucrecia Martel (2017) Argentina

I haven't seen too many Argentinian period pieces/costume dramas yet, so I was quite interested to see how Zama would pan out. It's not a genre I tend to respond well to. Zama certainly wasn't the worst I've seen so far, but the film does very little to stray from the template and offers little more than dry character drama. Zama is a Spanish officer who is stationed in Asunción. He is tired of the place and wants a transfer to Buenos Aires, but for that he has to get approval from the king. A letter should be under way, but as long as the letter isn't in his hands, he has to make sure he doesn't make any mistakes. It's nice to see a different setting for a costume drama for a change, but other than that, there wasn't much here that caught my attention. The cinematography is crisp but unadventurous, the soundtrack is mediocre and the characters too plain. Very basic drama that doesn't engage and overstays its welcome.

Image

11. 2.0* - Forbidden Games [Jeux Interdits] by René Clément (1952) France

A classic war drama. Not the most familiar title, but once you've gotten past the biggest classics, Forbidden Games is one of the first films that is bound to pop up. It has a reputation for having a young cast that delivers stellar performances, and for once, I can't really disagree. Paulette's parents die during a sudden air raid. It leaves her stranded, wandering around with her dead puppy, hoping to find a new home. That's when she bumps into Michel, a young boy who invites her to live with him and his family. The death of her dog inspires Paulette to starts a cemetery for animals. Brigitte Fossey's performance is powerful indeed. The cinematography is solid too and the start, with her wandering around the countryside, looks very promising. Once she arrives at her new home, things settle down and the drama gets a little less interesting. It's a shame that the second half fizzles out, this would've worked better as a road movie.

12. 3.0* - The 8th Night [Je8ileui Bam] by Kim Tae-hyung (2021) South-Korea

A rather basic South-Korean horror film. Lately, South-Korea has been churning out some decent genre films, but somehow they lack the punch, flair and vitality to really rise above themselves. The 8th Night is a solid film, decent horror filler, but not very memorable or distinctive. Buddha rids the world of a serious evil and separates his left and right eyes. Only when they get back together, the evil will rise again. And sure enough, some historian bumps into the left eye and kick-starts the process that may lead to the destruction of humankind. Luckily, some monks are willing to lay their lives on the line. The horror is decent but expected, performances are solid, and the finale works well enough, but there's just too much drama in between, which hampers the pacing of the film. The film ends up with a runtime just under two hours, where 90 minutes would've been more than enough. Decent horror filler.

13. 3.0* - Infernal Storm by Huang Yi (2021) China

Tagging along on the popularity of Z Storm and Infernal Affairs. Infernal Storm is a very typical Hong Kong crime flick (though backed with Chinese money) that doesn't really attempt to do anything different. Instead, it revives a genre that's been slowly bleeding to death this past couple of years. Its biggest problem is that it can't quite match the quality of the original Hong Kong films. This is yet another tale of a mole who has infiltrated a Triad organization. He is one of two guys who are up for promotion, but the organization is aware there's a mole in their midst. And so the usual cat and mouse game starts, including the added trouble that his contact at the police is facing some problems of his own. With guys like Jordan Chan and Lam Suet, you have some real veterans. The cinematography is also pretty slick, even the soundtrack has some stand-out moments. But when putting everything together, it never quite gels. Something in the editing throws off the pacing of the action and makes it look cheaper than it should. It's certainly not a bad attempt, but not the return to form I hoped this would be.

17. The South of Innocence (Dominican Republic, 2014) * 88 min.
18. Vigil (New Zealand, 1984) * 90 min.

The South of Innocence starts like it will be a heavy melodrama, but fortunately becomes an easygoing road movie. Vigil is a coming of age story about a girl whose family raises sheep on a isolated farm, strange and absorbing.

Disproving her colleagues, a high school teacher succeeds in getting her students interested in Shakespeare in this cookie cutter inspirational teacher film. The only really distinguishable characteristics here are the Aussie setting and Indigenous kids - and the film overplays its hand by trying to be equally about the teacher and her academically disengaged students. Hunter Page-Lochard is great as her best student; as the teacher, Christina Ricci is less interesting.

5. Before the Rain (North Macedonia, 1994)
A war drama in three parts that gestures in the direction of magical realism. I went into this movie with no knowledge or expectations and found it delightful. To preserve that experience for others, I won't write too much more, only that it concerns ethnic conflict in the Balkans and the theme of eternal recurrence. It also, curiously, makes subtle but obvious references to The Wild Bunch and Butch Cassidy.

I was in the mood for a true crime doc, so I thought it was time to prioritize one of these docuseries on my watchlist that I hadn't been watching because I'm lazy and subtitles. This one was fine - about the murder and coverup of a woman living in a private community at a country club. Class issues, murder mystery, the works. It was fine. Just lacked soul and honesty, really.

18. Honeyland (2019, Republic of Northern Macedonia) 7/10
This was nowhere close to my radar until I stumbled across it on Hulu. Interesting documentary told narrative-style about a beekeeper in Macedonia who gets fucked over by her neighbor. Really nice slice-of-life doc about people on the margins of society. Thematically a bit similar to Nomadland.

19. Collective (2019, Luxembourg) 7/10
This is a Romanian doc (Lux for the game) about a fire at a nightclub that turned into a national tragedy that spiraled into an exposure of government corruption. Really solid in the political doc space.

20. En la selva no hay estrellas a.k.a. No Stars in the Jungle -- Robles Godoy, Peru, 1967

Pitchorneida already summarized this one very well. It's pure coincidence that I'm watching it, too -- I had it in my lineup before the month began. I also have Zama coming up very soon (so I will probably hit Argentina), though I will be surprised if I do not personally rate it higher than Onderhond -- it sounds like it will be up my alley, anyway. :)

While the basic plot is quite predictable here with a cliched romance, the characters are quirky, including a kidnapped woman who is actually happy to be taken away from her humdrum life. Ali Zafar also makes for a nicely charismatic lead while performing amazing stunts; from parkour jumping up brick walls to bouncing between rooftops, the stunts are generally breathtaking to view. Biggest drawback here is the bloated runtime due to an overload of songs.

Set in a small UAE town during the 1980s, this comedy involves locals training for an obscure sports game while balancing personal problems. It all sounds appealing enough and there are some fun moments as they train using makeshift equipment and argue over food. Unfortunately, the film assumes some basic knowledge of the sport at hand (called "mait" - kinda like wrestling?) and then the film introduces a random arranged marriages subplot near the end.

I admire the strategy, though. If you're going to make a terrible movie, you should make it in a place like Andorra so that nuts like us will watch it for this sort of challenge.

14. 3.5* - Gaia by Jaco Bouwer (2021) South-Africa

South-African eco horror with strong fantasy impulses. It may not be the most original or creative horror flick ever made, but it's one of those films that puts its director on the map. Bouwer takes a solid premise, executes it flawlessly, and sprinkles it with a personal signature that makes Gaia stand out from its peers. Deep inside the South-African jungle, two park rangers are checking the cameras they planted. After their drone crashes, they split up and one of them lands her foot in the trap of two local hunters. She makes it to their cabin, unaware of the strange dangers that lurk underneath the jungle. The practical effects and (creature) designs look great, the exaggerated sound effects and moody soundtrack are a big asset, and the performances are on point. It's a shame the film focuses just a little too much on human friction and doesn't dare to go in overdrive during the finale, but it's a superbly dark trip that makes the most of its fantastical premise.

37. Ila Ayn a.k.a. Whither? (Georges Nasser, 1957, Lebanon) - 9/10 (l)

A universal film about exile, without any doubt the one that resonated the most with me. The cinematography is gorgeous, it's like a very good Satyajit Ray but with the plot having a French existentialist feeling, I thought a lot about Camus, Resnais, Duras even though it's clearly more down to earth.

26. El Ángel (2018, Argentina, Spain) - 6/10 - Based on a true story this was a pretty interesting story, though it was slightly awkward to follow at times. Still had a few WTF moments that had me glued to it.

27. Gyeongseonghakyoo: Sarajin sonyeodeul (2015, South Korea) - 7/10 - A girl with TB is dropped off at a boarding school in Japanese occupied Korea where she starts to improve after given medication, but is everything as it seems, especially when other students start to go missing. A rather intriguing mystery that didn't go where I was expecting it to. I did have a slight struggle though keeping the characters straight in my head on who was who, but I do that a lot with Asian cinema when the characters are very similar.

28. Au nom du Christ (1993, Côte d'Ivoire) - 2/10 - My first taste of Ivory Coast cinema was not a good one. I am normally reasonably forgiving with undeveloped countries movies but I have seen enough good ones that something with so poor a production just doesn't cut it. Yeah I know what it was going for but it was just so poorly done.

This horror film follows a group of hikers who are attacked by a spirit that infects and possesses some of its victims. The film does not provide any logic as to why the spirit savagely attacks some and merely possesses others, but taken a mindless slasher, it is okay. None of the characters above fodder level, but the gore/special effects are nifty for a movie on a budget: decapitated head, victims with torsos is ripped open, attackers walking vertically down trees.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

38. Bye Bye Blue Bird (1999) Faroe Islands

Image

Returning to the Faroe Islands, two women cause a stir in their sleepy hometown here. While the film offers some great seaside scenery (see above), that is as good as the film gets. The two young women are so utterly obnoxious towards everyone that they meet that it becomes impossible to care for their hurt and sorrow (they have returned to reconnect with certain individuals). Add in hard-to-read green subtitles on Vimeo and this was a simply torturous watch.

So, how bad is Bye Bye Blue Bird? Well, I have seen Nick from Andorra this month, Instant Justice from Gibraltar, a dull Guyanan historical drama, a UAE film about a foreign sport that makes no sense, and - just a few hours ago - a São Tomé movie made on a budget of around $500, and yet this still gets my vote as the film that I have hated the most so far this month. Ugh. :yucky:

Okay, now we are pushing it. :pinch: Just a couple of posts up I claimed that Bye Bye Blue Bird was my worst viewing this month. Well, this doesn't quite take over that spot since it's relatively short and the black and white looks cool, but overall this entry is definitely very uncool.

Too much Belarusian and not enough Psycho, this indie drama involves a young woman who accepts an invitation to a party hosted by a male school peer who she has not seen in years. When she arrives with two other friends, she soon discovers that the part is just him and them... but does that make him a psycho? Three quarters of this is just dialogue-heavy build-up. It is not until halfway in that the female friends even begin to doubt their host's motives.

19. The Silence (Tajikistan, 1998) 76 min.
20. A Touch of Spice (Greece, 2003) * 107 min.

A ten year old blind boy works in an shop where musical instruments are made, but keeps wandering off following music or beautiful voices on his way to work in The Silence. A visually beautiful movie with interesting use of sound, and a minimalist plot.

A Touch of Spice is a look at a Greek professor and his family, exiled from Istanbul because of friction over Cyprus, and the role that cooking plays in his life and culture. It celebrates tradition and nonconformity, adding the wrong spice sometimes to change the recipe and the mood, and has the right amount of sentimentality.
