Regarding the bonus game:
Still thinking about this. Maybe the recommendation game (is there any interest) and "watch at least one film from a set of typical Italian genres/movements (giallo, peplum, spaghetti western, commedia alla'italiana, neorealism, poliziotteschi, mondo, cannibal, etc.)" or the same with famous actors (both suggested by sortile9io)

Any input would be appreciated

Not sure I'll participate in the bonus challenge anyway, but I like the sub-genre option.
You could also do something with this list maybe?

Or something related to one of the other June challenges.... just throwing ideas out.

It starts! First in. :D

:shoot:

1. Shoot the Living and Pray for the Dead (1971) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066240/

Image

Tensions flare here as bank robbers try to work out whether a mysterious stranger has an ulterior motive for agreeing to guide them across the border, and as an eccentric Klaus Kinski gets on everyone's nerves. Kinski dominates the screen as ever, but too much though; he is such a giant presence that the other characters end up as interchangeable by comparison. The film gets somewhat more dynamic in its second half though as they set out on a dangerous trek.

Maybe just encourage bonus game participants to nominate films available on common streaming platforms? With Japan, almost everybody recommended the rarest of obscurities. I know that there are ways to source different films, but the game's automatically going to work better it if easier-to-track-down films are being promoted.

The Italian Job
1. Shoot the Living and Pray for the Dead (1971)
2. The Perfume of The Lady In Black (1974) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070565/

Image

This is slow to warm up with twenty minutes passing before anything horror-like occurs, but the initial appearance of the titular lady is very well done and the protagonist's subsequent interactions with characters who may not exist are great too. Mimsy Farmer excels in the lead role as she gradually grows more unhinged and prone to jumping at the slightest of noises; the film has a real atmospheric music score too. Alas, the ending does not really work.

That doesn't seem quite right... As far as I can tell the Italian entries start at 504 (Cabiria) and end around 518 (Cinema Paradiso).

I've been looking forward to this challenge for a while, but likely won't be as active as initially planned due to EURO "2020", which ironically will include watching Italy's national team (among many others).

3. The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (1971) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066412/

Image

From a spinning/slapping nightmare to an eerie parking garage pursuit, the has several striking scenes; there are also some great, unusual camera angles as the protagonist begins to lose her mind (see above). The most fascinating aspect of the film though is the Hitchcock-ish explanation, and given how clever and intriguing it is, it feels a shame that it only pops up at the end. The overall story also works much better near the end with some pacing issues at first.

1. Journey to Italy (1954) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046511/

Boy am I behind on classic Italian films...

This was nice. 7/10 for me. I liked the photography of it and really appreciated seeing parts of Italy at the time. Didn't much care for the characters and didn't connect with them at all, which kept this from being great, but it's definitely an enjoyable film.

1. The Lickerish Quartet (Radley Metzger, 1970) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065981/
Noted adult film director Metzger adapts this psychosexual Italy/Germany/US co-production with a lot of style but with an air of pretentiousness that can get distracting. It has some very nice visual setpieces like the writhing in ecstasy on a dictionary peppered with sexually charged vocabulary. Plotwise it feels a little slight though, but I'd imagine fans of Metzger will find much to like here.

Image
2. The Devil's Nightmare (Jean Brismée, 1971) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067592/
I quite enjoyed this kooky, garish Belgian/Italian gothic horror piece about a sleeper cell succubus and the seven deadly sins that she torments. It doesn't always make sense but when the camerawork is this nice and the plot is consistently engaging and offbeat, it doesn't matter.

Image
3. Il coltello di ghiaccio a.k.a. Knife of Ice (Umberto Lenzi, 1972) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068394/
This was a solid low-key giallo from Lenzi featuring the lovely Carroll Baker channeling Sandra Dee of all people playing a deaf woman being tormented by a murderous stalker. It has some nice shadowy cinematography at times and while it does drag in places, it also has some nice suspense set pieces as well with a twist ending that generally makes sense even when it doesn't.

Image
4. Il consigliori a.k.a. The Counsellor (Alberto De Martino, 1973) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069916/
Man, this one seems to shamelessly rip off The Godfather with Martin Balsam in the Martin Brando role and Tomas Milan as the consigliori in the title. Still, this gritty crime thriller lacks the inflated sense of self-importance that The Godfather imposes on itself which does make it more unabashedly fun than the much more well-known Coppola picture.

Image
5. La mano che nutre la morte a.k.a. The Hand That Feeds The Dead (Sergio Garrone, 1974) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070368/
This one is a kind of low-rent gothic horror version of Eyes Without A Face starring Kinski as the doctor who kills to fix his wife's face which was left scarred in a horrible accident that took her father's life. Despite a premise with potential, the presence of Kinski is smashing attire and some squirmy but still cheesy skin peeling scenes, this movie was pretty dull.

Image
6. La polizia brancola nel buio a.k.a. The Police Are Blundering in the Dark (Helia Colombo, 1975) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073554/
A guy investigating a series of murders and a missing friend meets up with a weirdo in a wheelchair that may or may not have something to do with the murders. And geez, this is an oddball movie. While it is slow in places, it has such an offbeat tone with bizarre non-sequitor scenes and weird plot devices that I was pretty engaged. When a movie uses a mad photographer who has a contraption that can take photos of the inside of people's minds as a casual side plot, you're in for something good. I know some are disappointed by its lack of gore and actual sex but it does feature copious amounts of nudity, much of the time for no reason like a woman stripping down to her underwear to eat a pastrami sandwich. Why? Who cares? I dug it.

Image
7. E tanta paura a.k.a. Plot of Fear (Paolo Cavara, 1976) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074451/
So the setup here is pretty standard giallo with folks gettin' murdered and a children's book being left at the scene of the crime as a clue to the killer's motive. Plot of Fear differs from the standard giallo though by incorporating elements of the Italian political thriller which was also popular in the '70s, building up the mystery into a broader conspiracy that gives it a different feel than many gialli I've seen. It's hard to say if this one is actively good on its own or if it just seems pretty good because it's trying something different though.

Image
8. La polizia è sconfitta a.k.a. Stunt Squad (Domenico Paolella, 1977) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078336/
If you expected a poliziotteschi called Stunt Squad to have good action sequences, you would be correct. The plot isn't super-deep with basically a special police task force on motorcycles put together to combat rampant gang violence. It keeps a brisk pace though and features a good main villain too.

Image
9. Enigma rosso a.k.a. Red Rings of Fear (Alberto Negrin, 1978) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077505/
Three teenagers calling themselves the Inseparables are at the center of a murder investigation of a teenage girl. Maybe it was the poor quality VHS transfer on the DVD I have of this but frankly I thought this was pretty dull and poorly directed for a lot of it. It's very heavy on the procedural element, the nadir of the giallo, and just feels very flat and uninspired with a needlessly convoluted script and an out-of-nowhere random ending. Still I guess if you just want to see some boobs and blood, it does have a little of both.

Image
10. Malabimba (Andrea Bianchi, 1979) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079512/
Uh hm.... Well, this one definitely doesn't hold back. Capitalizing off the post-Exorcist demon possession boom in Italy in the mid to late 70s, Malabimba features a nubile, virginal youth possessed by a demon which drives to more and more obscene sexual acts of debasement. Extremely sleazy and X-rated, you pretty much know what you're getting into from the director of Strip Nude for Your Killer and Burial Ground. Subtlety is not a word generally associated with Andrea Bianchi.

You could also do something with this list maybe?

Or something related to one of the other June challenges.... just throwing ideas out.
A sub-genre bonus challenge I would like.

1. Giu la testa /Duck you sucker! (71) imdb.com/title/tt0067140/ - rewatch

AKA A Fistful of Dynamite. Well worth the rewatch. Awesome chemistry between Steiger and Coburn. two of my favorite actors. It's darker and more serious than the Man with No Name trilogy.

1. L'avventura (1960)
Don't know what all the fuss is about. This is a limp romantic drama wrapped around a pallid mystery. Overlong and enervated, it has all the vitality of an old dog on a very hot summer day. My 4500th check.

The Italian Job
1. Shoot the Living and Pray for the Dead (1971)
2. The Perfume of The Lady In Black (1974)
3. The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (1971)
4. Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066735/

With an intriguing premise, this gets off to a great start, intercut with eerie recurring nightmares of being beheaded and full of scenes of the protagonist losing his grip on things, assaulting a local mailman at one point. Alas, as the film plods on, things become increasingly less interesting with screen time taken up by supporting characters that vary from near-offensive caricatures to comical and lame - and the ending is a letdown with too much rambling.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!
