This is one-quarter my challenge
1. Journey to Italy (1954) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046511/
2. La Notte (1961) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054130/
3. The Church (1989) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094860/

I'll say it. I just hate religious horror films from religious countries.

This mysterious movie has been compared to Last Year at Marienbad and it is stylistically similar beyond a blurry memories angle. There are many great creeping shots as well as some divine flashbacks with washed out blacks and whites that accentuate just how ingrained his memories are. And yet, this is a film that gets less interesting as it progresses. It initially feels like a Don't Look Now tale, only to become a slightly less enticing/exciting murder mystery.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Lee Van Cleef shines here as a gunfighter with an axe to grind, and while the film brushes over how he was wronged in the past, his revenge scenes are intense, especially a bank withdrawal and a signing of a contract in a liquor-covered saloon. With so little back-story, we never really know if his vengeance is truly overboard, but it is certainly heavily implied. Most striking either way is the dark humour here as Van Cleef keeps teaching a pupil various "lessons".

1. Vendo cara la pelle [I'll Sell My Skin Dearly] (1968. Ettore Maria Fizzarotti) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0215321/: 5.5 - Mediocre spaghetti western. The hero's name is Shane, so one guess which classic Western this partly resembles. ;)

2. Napoli si ribella [A Man Called Magnum] (1977, Michele Massimo Tarantini) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0188082/: 6.0

3. Giulietta degli spiriti [Juliet of the Spirits] (1965, Federico Fellini) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059229/: 7.5 - It's the humanity of Masina's character plus her acting that gives this extravaganza nonsense a emotional grounding. Think it rightfully can be seen as the female counterpart of 8 1/2 in that regard. Great score by Rota and fabolous colorfull cinematography.

4. Fists in the Pocket (1965) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059619/

This was interesting and weird. A sociopathic guy tries to remove barriers in his family - in any way possible. Very dark, but interesting concept.

5. Before the Revolution (1964) * 112 min.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056371/

The influence of the French New Wave, especially Godard, was apparent from the beginning, so it threw me when the ending seemed more inspired by Visconti, but after some thought it makes sense. Adriana Asti was wonderful.

Although the protagonist's pacific leanings are a little different, he is a bit of a dullard as played by Lou Castel here. By comparison, Mark Damon is simply electric as the chief antagonist and while his old-age makeup makes him seem more dressed for Halloween than twice his actual age (see above), the look suits him well. There are some nifty bits and pieces like a pivotal bell chime near the end and a backwards horse ride, but this film is all Mark Damon.

4. Prova d'orchestra [Orchestra Rehearsal] (1978, Federico Fellini) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079759/: 6.5 - This Fellini about a fictional tv-documentary filming a orchestra rehearsal is one of Fellini most overtly political films, it's also more restraint compared to other films he was making by the end of the 70s. But it never really can rise above the feeling of being a minor inbetween tv-movie in his oeuvre. It's nice for completists but far from essential.

3. Variety Lights (Lattuada & Fellini, 1950). Not bad, has elements that would later become characteristic for Fellini, but it doesn't really feel like the arrival of a spectacular talent either. Clearly he grew. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042692/

4. Rome 11:00 (de Santis, 1952). This almost feels like an exploitation movie, but I think it manages to remain in the "movie with a social message" genre. The opening and closing score is really apt and somewhat disturbing. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045098/

5. Achtung! Banditi! (Lizzani, 1951). This was better than I expected. It's a war drama about Italian "partisans" fighting the fascists and Germans in Italy during WWII. I thought it was going to be some cheap production, but it has a decent script and some good action. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043261/

Veni, vidi - vinci?
1. The Possessed (La Donna del Lago) (Bazzo, 1965). https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059116/

Two and a half decades after the classic Hollywood version and made with laxer regulations, this take pumps up the sex and nudity, but not really for the better. Gray's main vice seems to be using his young body to seduce others and the film is a slog to get through at times with him doing such limited things with his youthfulness. Bits and pieces certainly work though (Berger's claim that the painting "is part of me now"; his sudden obsession with staying young).

3. La maschera del demonio 1960 — a.k.a. Black Sunday 7/10
Decent horror movie with cool b&w visuals

4. Senso 1954 7/10
More related to The Leopard than to the Visconti movies I love. Classical, costumes, period drama, whatever. It's quite good at that but it's not the type of movie that I regularly fall in love with.

Spoiler
1. Caro diario 1993 — a.k.a. Dear Diary 7/10
2. Strategia del ragno 1970 — a.k.a. The Spider's Stratagem 7-/10
3. La maschera del demonio 1960 — a.k.a. Black Sunday 7/10
4. Senso 1954 7/10
Current recommendation: Mandala (1981)

While the premise is not exactly new or original, this is incredibly stylish with lots of lurid and accentuated colours (especially in a kooky lab) and some simply crazy special effects as faces melt, whole hands are entirely twisted off and as robotic hands rip out human hearts. The film also goes all Terminator at the end with its effects in the best possible way. The non-straightforward narrative works more often than not too. Great recommendation, flavo.

14. 12 + 1 (1969) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065361/

Yet another big screen version of Ilya Ilf and Yevgeni Petrov's Twelve Chairs, this actually predates the best-known versions by Mel Brooks and Leonid Gaidai. Despite coming earlier though, this does little to distinguish itself. Vittorio Gassman certainly tries his best in a role that has him scurrying about half-undressed, but the film a lot less funny than the Gaidai version, and does really not do anything different with the story either, unlike the Cuban take.

Yea, I didn't want to mention the Terminator part of it since it felt a little like a spoiler, although they do have it on the cover of the theatrical poster so

I don't think it's a spoiler since I didn't mention how it resembles Terminator  plus half of the Letterboxd reviews mention it anyway. :P Great recommendation though; never even heard of it before you mentioned it. Added to my 500<400 ballot.

I know, I know! <_< I couldn't decide whether to make it my 12th or 13th viewing, so I ended up settling on neither instead. Didn't really expect anyone to pick me up on it though. I mean, I'm not *that* well-known for my coincidental movie viewings... am I?

This is an odd little film with little in the way of conflict until the final half-hour. Bronson and a rancher's sister fall in love far soon after meeting and experiencing initial friction. Bronson also all-too-quickly becomes a caring surrogate father to a runaway boy. If never especially exciting, the lack of conflict does at least give way to a lot of horse action with several well-trained animals in the mix, and there is something Bronson action near the end.
