First leaderboard is up. I think I won't have a bonus challenge because of the additional programming and tracking. Or would anybody be quite disappointed?

1. The Possessed (La Donna del Lago) (Bazzo, 1965). This is wonderfully atmospheric. Echoes of Last Year in Marienbad or Hiroshima Mon Amour are present, in what would usually just be another whodunnit. The plot is not really important, it's all about the strange sense of otherworldliness present throughout. Definitely going to rewatch this sometime. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059116/

2. An Ideal Place to Kill (aka. Oasis of Fear)(Un posto ideale per uccidere) (Lenzi, 1971). A more "character driven" giallo than most, this doesn't quite come together untll the very end. Despite a runtime of only ~90 minutes, there's too much filler. The interview with Lenzi that's included on the excellent Mondo Macabro blu-ray seems to agree with that, he doesn't seem to happy with it. The acting is fine, Irena Pappas stands out, it's the script that really needed a revision or two. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067602/

Could we possibly include Malta, San Marino and the Holy See too? Because they couldn't fit into any other challenge.

Released half a decade after The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, this is the one Sergio Leone film that feels the most like it, centering around an uneasy friendship between two men who distrust one another and are constantly out to manipulate each other. Rod Steiger very much channels Eli Wallach too. The semi-vocal music score is mostly great too, though between the flashbacks and lingering close-ups, this isn't as tightly paced as Leone's other westerns.

I suggest an additional challenge which would include only these three. There's enough shorts to be put together, if anyone sees a problem in finding a feature.

I don't know if there is any place where this could be asked more officially. On this thread sounds okay to me - since it's only going to affect those who are following/participating in this thread.

The absence of Malta, San Marino and Vatican City State should have been picked up a couple of years ago when we agreed to break the world into 24 distinct regions that could be visited over a two-year period. Part of this decision involved everywhere in the world getting representation. That said, this isn't the first time we have let a smaller country slip our minds. We originally scheduled a Germany/Austria/Switzerland Challenge for last year, but then decided to include Liechtenstein too since it simply made sense to have it there.

Just my two cents.

This is one-quarter my challenge
1. Journey to Italy (1954) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046511/
2. La Notte (1961) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054130/

What is up with Italians and divorcing during this time period? I quite enjoyed this one - seeing the relationship slowly come unglued as you see the reasons way become more evident. I just think I missed a bit of the subtlety not speaking the language.

The opening stretch here is excellent, with great close-ups of a young boy's eyes wide open as he watches his family being slaughtered, taking in all of the details (tattoos etc.) of the assailants. There are also a few neat subsequent techniques such as red filters a la Kill Bill as he find those responsible as an adult. The revenge plot though is fairly basic and simple though and John Phillip Law makes for an ineffective lead. Lee Van Cleef is pretty great though.

3. Story of a Love Affair (1950) * 98 min.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042355/

This seemed like film noir with any passion and desperation intentionally removed. Lucia Bosè makes a fine femme fatale, beautiful and manipulative, and Massimo Girotti is ready to be led by her to heaven or hell, but it feels like they are going through the motions and the mystery they are hiding seems tawdry and small. This is probably more realistic than the heightened emotions and urgency that one finds in film noir, but definitely less exciting. I liked it and it worked as a drama, but it felt like I was watching Ossessione remade as Indifference.

Steiger feels like Wallach, cause the part was written for Wallach. Wallach wanted to do the part and turned down a French movie with Belmondo. But the studio made Leone go with Steiger, cause they wanted bigger names plus Steiger owned them one more movie in his contract. So Leone had to drop Wallach. Wallach threatened to sue, and they never spoke again.

Yeah, I did read about that. I guess I was still surprised by how much Steiger felt like Wallach. I kept forgetting that I wasn't watching the continued adventures of Tuco.

This certainly starts strongly enough with a grisly murder in the snow and the subsequent scenes with George Lazenby and Nicoletta Elmi as his daughter work with ample red herrings set up as other characters act strangely around her (see above). Once Elmi disappears though, things become less engaging. Lazenby sans Elmi is never too interesting, and while early on we wonder if/when the daughter will be kidnapped, once it happens, there is nowhere to go.

1. Caro diario 1993 — a.k.a. Dear Diary 7/10
I liked the first part, the other two parts were alright. I would have prefered to watch him drive around on the vespa for 1.5h though

2. Strategia del ragno 1970 — a.k.a. The Spider's Stratagem 7-/10
Been looking forward to this one for a while (Betrolucci Mystery the same year as Il Conformista? Hell yeah). it's based on Borges' The Hero and the Traitor. Having read that one, quite a bit of the mystery was gone. A man returns to his father's town (he has the same name and looks identical) where his father was cowardly murdered by fascists although the search for the murderer is reluctant and the protagonist ist possibly just as interested in erasing the story as he is in solving the mystery. That all sounds really cool yet I feel like this could have been executed better. The cinematography was nice but nowhere near The Conformist levels.

I also want to draw special attention to the current Film of the Week, Un maledetto imbroglio AKA The Facts of Murder (1959)
as well as on 1950 Italian movies, eligible for the upcoming 1950 poll.
Current recommendation: Mandala (1981)

Playing a character whose health declines over the course of the film, Sophia Loren provides a commanding performance here and the young actor cast opposite her does well too. The basic story though only hits familiar beats as the pair gradually bond despite initial friction. It is mostly just the performances that elevate this above average melodrama level. That and the great Oscar nominated theme song - though it only comes at the end.

June Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!
