Missed opportunity there. (u)
I know, I know! <_< I couldn't decide whether to make it my 12th or 13th viewing, so I ended up settling on neither instead. Didn't really expect anyone to pick me up on it though. I mean, I'm not *that* well-known for my coincidental movie viewings... am I?
The 11th mystery movie when I hosted the Mystery Challenge a couple years ago had the first clue "The sol-iest movie I could think of here" and it took exactly one guess to nail the film. And it wasn't by you.

5. La Voce della luna [The Voice of the Moon] (1990, Federico Fellini) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098606/ : 5.0 - Fellini's swan song is so very episodic that near the end I didn't really care anymore about it.

Finally breaking my 7/10 streak

5. L'albero degli zoccoli 1978 — a.k.a. The Tree of Wooden Clogs 8/10
over 3 hours of poor Italian farmers 150 ago being poor Italian farmers, speaking in a dialect that even most Italias have toruble understanding (or so the Wikipedia article claims) with a lot of lines going unsubtitled. A contemplative watch of something delibaretly inaccessible. It was fascinating.

Spoiler
1. Caro diario 1993 — a.k.a. Dear Diary 7/10
2. Strategia del ragno 1970 — a.k.a. The Spider's Stratagem 7-/10
3. La maschera del demonio 1960 — a.k.a. Black Sunday 7/10

5. L'albero degli zoccoli 1978 — a.k.a. The Tree of Wooden Clogs 8/10

Double post. Somehow I haven't watched any spaghetti westerns or gialli this month. I will need to get to it.

6. Four Times That Night (1971) * 83 min.

A sex comedy told Rashômon style. Clever idea, well made, but could have been more amusing if the writing was better.

Directed by a team best known for their horror offerings, it is perhaps unsurprising that the very graphic titular scalping incidents are the film's best asset. As for the rest of the movie, it is fairly standard as far as rape revenge film go - though with a soldier helping her out, it is not quite as emotionally involving had it been her against the rest of the world. For all their scenes together, the pair do not bond much either. Excellent freeze frame end though.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

This is one-quarter my challenge
1. Journey to Italy (1954) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046511/
2. La Notte (1961) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054130/

4. Fists in the Pocket (1965) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059619/
5. Stromboli (1950) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041931/
Not for me. I have limited ability to sympathize with people who make terrible avoidable decisions and then suffer the consequences. The scenery was the only saving grace.

While there is a lot of action here, especially towards the end, it is the quieter bits that really resonate. Particularly potent is the title character reuniting with his father. There is an amazing shot that travels 270 degrees around his head as he remembers his childhood and then the camera keeps subtly moving whenever he and his father converse. The resentment of his brothers, who see themselves as the "real sons" cuts deep too. The songs though? Not always.

This might sound a bit like Death Wish from its plot summary, but it is more closely aligned to John G. Avildsen's Joe with a focus on his concerns about his daughter and limited actual vigilante action. In fact, if anything, the movie about how gun ownership further deteriorates his already fragile mental state rather than provide the safety and security that he thought it would. Stefano Satta Flores absolutely shines in the leading role whatever the case.

His wife held hostage, a prison warden meets the kidnappers' demands to let a certain prisoner escape, but then kidnaps the escapee himself and attempts to also hold him ransom in this crime drama. The film gets off to an excellent start with the prisoner constantly declaring that he does not know who organised his escape. His escape is very intense too, while the uneasy friendship of sorts that develops between the warden and escapee mostly works.

Opening with a grisly Mafia massacre at a tanning salon, this crime drama gets begins well. Bathed in blue light, the hit feels hyperreal and almost surreal in the best possible way. Alas, nothing to come ever lives up to this great opening stretch, while the choice to weave in multiple parallels plotlines interferes with how emotionally involving the film is. There are simply too many protagonists for one to get to know any in real depth. Not my sorta film.

This is one-quarter my challenge
1. Journey to Italy (1954) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046511/
2. La Notte (1961) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054130/
3. The Church (1989) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094860/
4. Fists in the Pocket (1965) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059619/
5. Stromboli (1950) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041931/
6. Sebastiane (1976) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075177/

Although I appreciated its point of view and style, this was just not my thing. Just a bit to contrived for me, with the Latin putting it over the top. 4/10

Also, I noticed as I rated this on IMDB that it's not actually tagged as Italian there. But Italy is listed as the 1st country on TMDB, and it's an Italian story starring an Italian actor shot in Italy. Seemed more Italian than a lot of those Spaghetti Westerns. But if it doesn't count, I'll remove it.

6. La Grande Guerra (Monicelli, 1959). A fairly accomplished mix of comedy and war/action, this was better than I expected. It's not entirely successful in blending the two, but does a better job of it than many. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052861/

By the way, both The Gun and Revolver are great films. Added both to my 500<400 list. :)

This could have been a great look at mounting paranoia and irrational fear, but the filmmakers go for generic shocks rather than suspense by making it very clear that the protagonist is indeed being stalked. The tale also changes modes awkwardly throughout, initially starting as an evil twin film, only to become more of an evil dog film, then a film about her uncle whose motivations never make sense. Bits and pieces work though, including a very grisly dog slaying.

Nothing makes sense here, not even the title, as this Italian horror film focuses on the hunt for a serial killer who only ever offs his victims during the daytime. The film also offers a verbose explanation for everything at the end. This is, however, also one of the most delightfully WTF movies ever. From a man forced to flush his clothes down the toilet at gunpoint (see above) to a Red Riding Hood seduction game, there is nary a boring moment to be had.

While this plays out as more of a series of random vignettes than a narrative, it is driven by many tangible emotions. Maria Alexandra Lungu is excellent as the young lead, divided between desiring a life beyond beekeeping, while also resentful of her father employing a boy to help do a job that she and her sisters have managed for years. The latter angle could be better developed, and her sisters could have been further explored, but I liked this all the same.

June Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!
