After these two I'm really looking forward to the end of the silent era

10. Phantom (1922) 5/10
An aspiring poet becomes obsessed with a stranger after he is accidentally run over by her horse driven carriage. Murnau often tests my patience and here is no different. It looks nice with pretty shadows and everything but otherwise meh.

11. The Covered Wagon (1923) 5/10
Two caravans carrying pioneers traveling from Kansas to Oregon must deal with several obstacles and hardships along the way. Another difficult one for me to keep interested in. All the outdoor shots are nice and make it feel less stagey than other films at the time mostly taking place on indoor sets. It feels less claustrophobic and theatrical in that sense but it's still a bit too melodramatic in plot and acting. Interesting look at an early western not much more than that. The banjo playing shots were pretty funny though.

OP has been updated again. As usual, check your number and make sure it's correct.

Also here's a nifty little chart of the count of watches per year:
Image

Interesting to see how few watches have been in the '30s and '40s so far.

Time to enter the '90s and the '30s! Also you may notice I didn't stick with Italian the whole time. Honestly it's just because I guess I don't physically own any Italian films from 1995 or 1999.

Image
19. Non aprite quella porta 3 a.k.a. Night Killer (Claudio Fragrasso, 1990)
Kicking things off proper with a crapterpiece from Troll 2 director Claudio Fragrasso, Night Killer is a deliriously terrible movie that's a lot of fun to watch. So many things happen that make no sense and all of the actors seem to be playing about five levels above what they should. It's one of the least subtle movies I've seen in quite a while.

Image
20. La carne a.k.a. The Flesh (Marco Ferreri, 1991)
Damn, for a movie that starts almost like a cheesy rom-com, this one goes to some dark places. It comes across incredibly misogynistic with the lead actress coming across as just an absolutely awful person, and the script almost seems to be ok with what happens to her. The problem is also that the tone for much of the film doesn't really seem to justify where it ends up going as well. I dunno... This one is a tough sell.

Image
21. Al calar della sera a.k.a. Submission of a Woman (Alessandro Lucidi, 1992)
Speaking of tough sells, I'm not a fan of rape/revenge movies anyway, but when the tone is this screwy, I become even less enamored by it. This made-for-TV movie has a very messy script that almost feels like a Lifetime movie for the Italo-grindhouse crowd at times. It's just not very good.

Image
22. Mahakaal (Shyam Ramsay/Tulsi Ramsay, 1993)
This is the kind of Bollywood movie I can get behind. Yes, it's mega-cheesy with wildly out of place dance sequences, but given that it's mimicking '80s teen slashers from America (and is straight up ripping off Nightmare on Elm Street), the dancing doesn't seem terribly out of place. I mean, how many goofy '80s movies had random terrible dance sequences anyway? The practical effects range from decent and entertaining to hilariously bad and the plot is about what you'd expect, basically an excuse to see a series of "teens" (who all look like they're pushing 40) get attacked by the Freddy-lookalike. Which is fine. I mean, yea, it could've easily had at least 30 minutes edited out but still, I dug this one.

Image
23. L'uomo che guarda a.k.a. The Voyeur (Tinto Brass, 1994)
For those who enjoy the more artful adult films of Radley Metzger and Anthony Spinelli, Tinto Brass is another filmmaker I would put in their company. He got a lot of flack for his controversial film Caligula, but if you actually look at his quality of his directing, he has a lot of skill behind the camera and a strong vision for what he wants in a film. Granted, much of the time what he wants in a film seems to be big juicy asses, but you know, who am I to judge? Anyway, The Voyeur is less a coherent single narrative and more plays out as a series of vignettes involving a photographer who suspects his wife of having an affair while he himself falls into various escapades with, as one would expect from the title, a strong aspect of voyeurism inherent in many of the scenes. I don't think it's an unqualified success, but for those who would like a more polished and classy adult film that still has elements of camp, this Tinto Brass joint may be up your alley.

Image
24. La regina degli uomini pesce a.k.a. The Fishmen and Their Queen (Sergio Martino, 1995)
If you've ever wondered what it would look like for noted action/horror director Sergio Martino to go completely on auto-pilot, this kind-of sequel to his Island of the Fishmen (remixed and released in the US as Screamers also) takes the basic idea of the fishmen society from the previous film, adds a post-nuke theme that rips off Martino's own After The Fall of New York and wraps it all of in a cheesy kid's fantasy movie, the result being a clunky mish mash of a TV movie that's almost a complete waste of time. Maybe this might work in a Rifftrax/MST3K context? Otherwise avoid.

Image
25. Fatal Frames (Al Festa, 1996)
Oh geez...I didn't think my watches for the day would get worse than Fishmen and their Queen and yet here we are. A music video director who looks like he should be modeling for the cover of a Harlequin romance novel shows up in Rome to film a music video and soon finds himself a suspect in a series of murders revolving around the music video shoot. The whole movie looks like a terrible music video from the '80s. It has a bizarre cheap chic style to it that looks like a Mario Bava imitator making a shot-on-video feature with distractingly bad directing and editing choices. So let's get to the acting which is almost uniformly terrible. The leads are some of the worst actors in the movie too. It has some surprisingly competent genre actors like Donald Pleasance, Angus Scrimm and Linnea Quigley but does very little with them (and sadly this was Pleasance's final film appearance) instead giving a large chunk of screen time to singer Stefania Stella who also produced the movie. Oh and this turd is over two hours long. Ugh...

Image
26. M.D.C. - Maschera di cera a.k.a. Wax Mask (Sergio Stivaletti, 1997)
Maybe I've got rose-colored glasses coming off Fatal Frames but I had a lot of fun with this one. The script is a mess, but the directing is competent, the effects are ridiculous and the actual reveal of the killer is completely nuts. Kooky, krazy stuff.

Image
27. The Bat Whispers (Roland West, 1930)
Man, how many different movies featuring The Bat was there? Anyway, this is a pretty solid one with above average atmospheric directing and set design from Roland West. The acting from some of the cast feels a little stiff but this performance is solid gold:
https://youtu.be/qhgEKm7-kOM?t=2139

Image
28. The Phantom (Alan James, 1931)
The Phantom sadly is pretty much the opposite of The Bat Whispers. Poorly directed, really bad, unnatural acting from most of the cast and a script that just feels lazy. Just skip this one unless you're a completist.
100 Years, 100 Movies
1. The Headless Horseman (Edward D. Venturini, 1922)
2. The Shock (Lambert Hillyer, 1923)
3. Dante's Inferno (Henry Otto, 1924)

5. The Lickerish Quartet (Radley Metzger, 1970)
6. La plus longue nuit du diable a.k.a. The Devil's Nightmare (Jean Brismée, 1971)
7. Il coltello di ghiaccio a.k.a. Knife of Ice (Umberto Lenzi, 1972)
8. Il consigliori a.k.a. The Counselor (Alberto De Martino, 1973)
9. La mano che nutre la morte a.k.a. The Hand That Feeds (Sergio Garrone, 1974)

While the semblance of a plot can be deduced here (with greed and fame satire no less), this is clearly a film built around its songs, full of non-sequiturs and random trippy visuals. The best comparison might be Pink Floyd The Wall meets Scooby Doo, though ten times as madcap. In the mix there is a car chase that would be a contender for the most insane one ever filmed. While the lack of a solid story is sometimes frustrating, the imagination is amazing.

Year Range: 1922 to 2021. Years covered already:

1931
1971 1974
1985
2000 2004 2007

Goddamn. Bawled a bit watched this. The empathy and the lack of judgement as everyone is just going through their own circumstances and struggling together. Beautiful movie about the ugliness of life.

While there is a pretty great sequence towards the end that mirrors the falling building of Steamboat Bill, Jr. on a smaller scale (see above), this unfortunately does not often play to Keaton's best talents (stunts and stone-faced reactions). The dialogue-heavy opening stretch where he tries to sell golf clubs falls especially flat and Dick Wessel outshines Keaton at every point. When Keaton is allowed to do what he does best though, the film really works.

OK been lax on challenges of late so what better challenge to get me back into some sort of groove. i'm doing the last 100 years just because it would be the most easiest with my movie watching patterns of late. Also I assume music concerts don't count as a check for a year?

The opening stretch here is excellent, with great close-ups of a young boy's eyes wide open as he watches his family being slaughtered, taking in all of the details (tattoos etc.) of the assailants. There are also a few neat subsequent techniques such as red filters a la Kill Bill as he find those responsible as an adult. The revenge plot though is fairly basic and simple though and John Phillip Law makes for an ineffective lead. Lee Van Cleef is pretty great though.

12. The Marriage Circle (1924) 5/10
Unhappy with her marriage a wife begins flirting with a friend's new husband while her equally unhappily married husband tries to catch her cheating on him so he can get a divorce. Very similar themes to Why Change Your Wife but not so reliant on gender stereotypes. It's still not particularly funny or amusing but a bit more palatable. The actors are decent enough though all the characters are pretty unlikable and annoying. It moves along at an ok pace but is just not my thing. Lubitsch has a real issue with wives trying to use the bathroom mirror while their husbands try to shave. Apparently the ultimate sign of a failing marriage.

Louise Griffiths excels as a mysterious pro-chastity councilor here and her blood-like potion for restoring youth is intriguing, while Allison Scagliotti and an openly lesbian Francia Raisa make for spunky main characters. Alas, the film gets less interesting when it soon reveals that Griffiths is none other than the legendary Elizabeth Bathory. More is dedicated to Scagliotti failing to convince others of the truth than on Bathory in actions. In fact, the gore is minimal.

14. Room Service (1938)

Image

Often cited as one of the Marx Brothers' weakest films, this effort contains the occasional good Groucho zinger and some madcap interactions between the trio, but the usual sparks are not there. Part of this is perhaps due to the film being an adaptation of a stage play, with each shoehorned into a role. Then there is the fact that most of the action is limited to one single hotel room. The biggest issue though is probably Frank Albertson as a dull straight man.

I also find it exceedingly creepy. Reverse the gender roles and you have the beginning of a "guy obsessively stalks girl..." horror movie. I was also not a fan of this on revisiting it after many years.

I hope my review in the Japan challenge was part of the incentive to watch this.

Didn't really care too much for this. Feels like I've watched many movies that have improved on the formula that this movie set forth that it's hard to go back and view this as revolutionary.
I also find it exceedingly creepy. Reverse the gender roles and you have the beginning of a "guy obsessively stalks girl..." horror movie. I was also not a fan of this on revisiting it after many years.
To be honest, I kinda dismissed it was a "product of it's time" thing and thought maybe there was going to be a payoff to it. Like, she spends so much of her life planning and executing elaborate pranks on people to the point of legal problems, but it never amounts to anything. I thought there'd be some comeuppance. Like when she called to report the bird attacks they wouldn't believe her because of her reputation.

8. Prometheus (Ridley Scott-2012) USA/UK 3 official lists 27,183 checks

Feels like Scott is trying to walk a fine line between cerebral sci-fi and horror. It has a fantastic setup for questioning humanity's origins and purpose but it can't really pursue those questions because for the purposes of horror, we have to have the most naive possible humans. Missed opportunity for this gorgeous movie.

9. The Natural (Barry Levinson-1984) USA 3 official lists 5,661 checks

An allegorical baseball movie. Best thing is all the aging chracter actors getting some time on screen with Robert Redford. Too bad Redford doesn't really bring anything to the movie beyond being Robert Redford.
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting. Time after time

I've actually heard quite a few great things about this one over the past few weeks (not just on the forum). But yeah, I have been using both this Challenge and the Italian one to fit in some of the madcap Nippon and spaghetti western films that I ran out of time for last month.

This certainly starts strongly enough with a grisly murder in the snow and the subsequent scenes with George Lazenby and Nicoletta Elmi as his daughter work with ample red herrings set up as other characters act strangely around her (see above). Once Elmi disappears though, things become less engaging. Lazenby sans Elmi is never too interesting, and while early on we wonder if/when the daughter will be kidnapped, once it happens, there is nowhere to go.

Caring for a lesbian dancer, a palliative care nurse becomes convinced that she needs to save her patient's soul as she looks for a divine purpose in life here. Morfydd Clark is solid in the lead role and the first two thirds of the film work well with the smallest of suggestions that something is not quite right with her. The film's take on the dangers of religious extremism is pretty unsubtle, but everything spirals towards a breathtaking, memorable conclusion.

Also I assume music concerts don't count as a check for a year?

1. Salinui chueok (2003) - 7/10
2. Emanuelle - Perché violenza alle donne? (1977) - 5/10
3. Bergmál (2019) - 7/10
A music concert would count if it were officially released in some capacity (theatrical, DVD, etc.). Although just random bootlegs of Phish concerts on youtube or something would not. :D

Alright! Time to finish off the '90s and '30s!

Image
29. Il mio West a.k.a. Gunslinger's Revenge (Giovanni Veronesi, 1998)
This one is a rare '90s spaghetti western with a kid who's the son of a white doctor and Native American woman and who's grandfather shows up in town one day, bringing trouble along with him. The most notable thing about this film is that it's the only spaghetti western starring both Harvey Keitel and David Bowie (both doing pretty poor accents...Bowie especially). Otherwise it's tonally at odds with its self, at times wanting to be a more family-friendly, Disney-esque picture and at other times confronting the grim reality of gunslingers in the west. Honestly pretty skippable unless you just want to see the novelty of Bowie as a cowboy.

Image
30. Desecration (Dante Tomaselli, 1999)
Well, this one could've been good if done by someone else. But having already seen Tomaselli's film Horror, I pretty much knew what to expect here. Tomaselli has some weird, borderline surreal tendencies at times (shifting visions of nun paintings for instance) while also feeling beholden to what came before (one scene feels almost like a straight rip off of Evil Dead). It's all shot on an incredibly low budget that makes it feel very flat and cheap that really hampers the atmosphere he's trying to build up.

Image
31. Behind the Mask (John Francis Dillon, 1932)
Advertised as a horror film, like many pre-code "horror" movies, it's really more of a crime picture with grandiose flourishes, particularly a scenery-chewing criminal mastermind. Jack Holt is serviceable in the lead role here of an undercover cop that gets mixed up in an elaborate drug smuggling ring but Karloff as the mastermind's right hand man, steals the scenes they share together. It's not essential but will be of interest to Karloff fans.

Image
32. This Naked Age a.k.a. This Nude World (Michael Mindlin, 1933)
This cheesy and dull "documentary" on nudists serves as an early precursor to the nudie cuties that Doris Wishman would gain some success with a couple decades later. Really the most entertaining thing about this is its Austin Powers-style convenient blocking to avoid showing genitalia.

Image
33. Black Moon (Roy William Neill, 1934)
A woman is drawn back to an island steeped in voodoo practices and finds that her past will come back to haunt her in the most unfortunate of ways. This was actually a pretty solid voodoo cult flick, shot with nice atmosphere. Some scenes feel overly talky with random exposition dumps but the actual voodoo ritual scenes are by far the best parts of the film.

Image
34. Life Returns (James P. Hogan/Eugene Frenke, 1935)
I knew I was going to be in trouble when the movie opens with this title card:
"TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: The actual experiment of bringing the dead back to life, which is part of the motion picture "Life Returns" was performed by myself and staff on May 22, 1934 at 11:45 P.M. in Berkeley, California. This part of the picture was originally taken to retain a permanent scientific record of our experiment. Everything shown is absolutely real. "
Instead of a heightened Frankenstein rip-off I was hoping to glean mild entertainment for, instead I got a boring medical procedural mixed with Our Gang (the movie spends an inordinate amount of time with the kid who owns the dog and his friends). Avoid this snoozefest if you value your time.

Image
35. Marihuana (Dwain Esper, 1936)
Ah, nothing to jolt me from my doldrums brought on by Life Returns like a Dwain Esper flick. This is as entertaining as one would hope, maybe even more so than the more well-known Reefer Madness. It's all fun and games when the devil's weed just gives a bunch of teen girls giggling fits and causes them to strip nude (post-Hayes code!) and frolic in the ocean. But when one of them drowns and another ends up knocked up, the laughter stops and shit gets real. I love that these roadshow pictures were able to get away with such rampant exploitation elements due to their "educational" value. This one was a lot of fun.

Image
36. Sh! The Octopus (William C. McGann, 1937)
This one had potential. It plays out like an old dark house flick in a lighthouse which is an interesting setting to begin with. Then it adds some pretty weird touches like a killer octopus and the ridiculous titular villainous mastermind. Unfortunately we're also saddled with the wacky shenanigans of two bumbling detectives that seem to be trying their hardest to mimic Abbott & Costello with less than ideal results. Still I think it's worth a watch just for the more offbeat premise alone.

Image
37. Kate Plus Ten a.k.a. Queen of Crime (Reginald Denham, 1938)
Here we have an early Edgar Wallace crime flick about a woman who tries to balance her mixed-up feelings for a dashing protagonist with the needs of being the leader of a gang of thieves planning a major heist. It's all wildly improbable and frustrating to watch at times with people behaving in very unusual ways contrary to their self-interests. It also just feels too light and frothy to build any kind of meaningful stakes. One of the worst Edgar Wallace adaptations I've seen.

Image
38. Torture Ship (Victor Halperin, 1939)
An eccentric doctor believes he can extract the evil from convicted prisoners. So naturally he books a private cruise, loads the boat up with psychopaths and murderers then sets out for international waters to perform his strange experiments. I mean, how could this possibly go wrong? It's full of dumb character decisions and low-rent sets. Still, it's marginally more entertaining than some of the other stuff I've seen this month, so I give it a pass.
