The plot does not make a whole lot of sense (why the couple let a strange man stay with them after assuming that he is an escaped asylum inmate) and the whole thing is very slow-burn with little overt horror except towards the end. That said, the film amply builds up suspense as we wait for him to kill them. Pacing and logic issues aside, the quality of the prosthetic effects is the film's biggest minus, but as the film fortunately rarely focuses on his makeup.

20. Lyle (2014)

Gaby Hoffmann is superb throughout here as a grieving mother who becomes increasingly convinced that there was something sinister about her baby's death. The film never milks any ambiguity out of the premise though. It is always very obvious that Hoffmann is not delusional and that something is up, and then the film never delves into the lore driving those involved. There's a reason why the film has earned unfavourable comparisons to Rosemary's Baby.

14. The Scarlet Letter (1926) 6/10
An unmarried woman gives birth to a child and after refusing to reveal the identity of the baby's father she is forced to wear a letter 'A' and is shunned by the townsfolk. Some of the religious rules and the 'ye olde' language was both funny and unnerving. It was quite a nice looking film and moves along at quite a good pace. It's one of the more modern-feeling silent films, though it still has that melodramatic silent acting. Gish and Hanson are both good, with the latter having a fantastic face for the screen, but Gish spends the film just looking wide-eyed and sad and Hanson looks super shifty and worried. I wished their romance had been a little more convincing or interesting and the acting had been a little more subtle, but not a bad film.

15. College (1927) 4/10
At his highschool graduation, a young man declares the importance of books over athletics which upsets a popular girl who he decides to impress by engaging in college athletics. The plot is stupid with Keaton's character being just unlikable and bland. I didn't understand why the girl was such a great 'prize' and she was pretty awful too. Like most of Keaton's films the film is just him getting into many hijinks as he fails at a lot of things. I have appreciation for Keaton's stunts but as usual it's not funny or entertaining, just mostly annoying. And the music was like a super annoying endless carousel which drove me crazy pretty early on.

16. The Racket (1928) 5/10
A tough police captain becomes a rival of a powerful criminal and tries to bring him down while dealing with the corrupt people in power who are protecting him. This wasn't totally horrible but hasn't aged too well. It comes up off as incredibly generic and perhaps moreso now when we've seen this same kind of film over and over. The actors all suit their characters, particularly the seedy criminals and that gangster smirk which is part of what makes it feel so stereotypical--but it is amusing. I struggled to work out what tone it was going for and the music was a large part of this confusing tone. It never seemed to suit the scene.

49. Rocketship X-M (Kurt Neumann, 1950)
50. Five (Arch Oboler, 1951)
51. Invasion, U.S.A. (Alfred E. Green, 1952)
52. Project Moon Base (Richard Talmadge, 1953)
53. Gog (Herbert L. Strock, 1954)
For the first half of the '50s, I thought I'd dive into the world of clunky pop sci-fi which was all the rage in this decade, pulling unwatched flicks from the Psychotronic Book of Film (granted I think I've actually seen a couple of these as MST3K episodes before but this was a riff-less viewing... much to my dismay...). By and large, these are mostly extremely low budget and dull with tons of overly talky scenes presumably to disguise the lack of engaging plot or special effects. I will say that out of these a couple stick out. Rocketship X-M was an interesting one just for it's incredibly downbeat ending and how ludicrously sexist Lloyd Bridges was in it. Five is the other one that stood out. It's a little slow in places but overall offers a post-nuke message movie that felt like an extended Twilight Zone episode which is generally a pretty good thing.

54. Teen-Age Crime Wave (Fred F. Sears, 1955)
55. The Flaming Teenage (Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr./Charles Edwards, 1956)
56. Untamed Youth (Howard W. Koch, 1957)
57. Daddy-O (Lou Place, 1958)
58. Girls Town (Charles Haas, 1959)
For the back half of the decade, I decided to tackle a group of JD (Juvenile Delinquent) films which were all the rage in the late '50s after the success of The Blackboard Jungle kicked off a hysteria of adults worrying that teens were going around robbing banks, murdering, reckless driving and fucking unceremoniously. This bunch I pulled from a really fun list:
I Was A Teenage Juvenile Delinquent Rock 'n' Roll Horror Beach Party
. Also what's funny is several of these were also on MST3K. The '50s must've been a big decade for that show. None of these are terribly great although the worst of the bunch is probably The Flaming Teenage, a pseudo anthology preaching the dangers of alcohol from the director of The Blob. The rest of them are pleasantly pulpy slices of cheese peppered with dance numbers and sass. Having said that, they all have some dull sections that make them feel long even with mostly relatively short runtimes.

Time to knock out the 2020s real quick and start digging into the '40s.

Image
59. His House (Remi Weekes, 2020)
I thought this was quite good, an allegorical haunted house story amplifying the terror of the immigrant experience. Moody and atmospheric, I'm sure it will disappoint those looking for a jump scare factory a la The Conjuring, but it's really more the kind of film to get under your skin given a little patience.

Image
60. Spiral: From the Book of Saw (Darren Lynn Bousman, 2021)
Darren Lynn Bousman, director of Saw II through IV returns to the franchise, in this slick, saturated neo-noir thriller that pivots the malicious games perpetrated by Jigsaw into a kind of variation on a theme via a copycat killer wearing a pig mask instead of the creepy doll. While overall this is a pretty underwhelming film with an incredibly predictable twist, Chris Rock surprisingly pulls off the bitter, disillusioned detective role pretty well, leveraging his comic persona to occasionally crack a joke that feels more like a sad, defeated person trying to hide how they feel. Smauel L. Jackson on the other hand feels a little wasted in a fairly minor role that happens to loom large over the proceedings. I feel like with a better script, the idea of shifting Saw into more of a psychological thriller like Seven could work. But instead we get flashes of something better mired in the same old tired shtick of the previous entries. The Saw franchise should know you can't have your cake and eat it too. It's pretty much the premise the entire series is built on.

Image
61. Island of Doomed Men (Charles Barton, 1940)
This one is pretty much the Peter Lorre show as a madman who runs on a diamond mine on a secluded island who hires parolees desperate for a job that he can work to death and even torture or kill if necessary. Lorre exudes a kind of quiet menace for much of the film that shows how capable an actor he could be with the right part.

Image
62. Spooks Run Wild (Phil Rosen, 1941)
This is the kind of film that makes me feel a little bad for Bela Lugosi. Lugosi is clearly not phoning it in despite this whole affair feeling like a lazy, tossed off horror comedy vehicle for the East Side Kids to bumble through. It's almost never funny but Lugosi makes it worth a watch for fans of his anyway.

Image
63. The Living Ghost (William Beaudine, 1942)
What could've been a pretty dull murder mystery with some hokey zombified victims thrown in gets bumped up in entertainment value a little courtesy of James Dunn's wise-cracking detective character and his screwball comedy-esque exchanges with Joan Woodbury and others. The denouement isn't particularly interesting, but it's a quick and breezy flick that doesn't get too boring.

Image
64. Revenge of the Zombies (Steve Sekely, 1943)
Is this the first Nazi zombie movie? If so, neat! Also it's always nice to see pre-boozed up has-been John Carradine. Plotwise it's not terribly stellar and the multiple racist caricatures get distracting. Otherwise, it's a pretty straightforward pre-Romero zombie flick.

I'll be doing 1921-2021.

4. Variety Lights (Lattuada & Fellini, 1950). Not bad, has elements that would later become characteristic for Fellini, but it doesn't really feel like the arrival of a spectacular talent either. Clearly he grew. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042692/

5. Rome 11:00 (de Santis, 1952). This almost feels like an exploitation movie, but I think it manages to remain in the "movie with a social message" genre. The opening and closing score is really apt and somewhat disturbing. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045098/

6. Achtung! Banditi! (Lizzani, 1951). This was better than I expected. It's a war drama about Italian "partisans" fighting the fascists and Germans in Italy during WWII. I thought it was going to be some cheap production, but it has a decent script and some good action. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043261/

1. Clear and Present Danger (Noyce, 1994) 9284 checks, 2 official lists
This is a solid thriller with a strong performance from Ford, but I feel this is let down by a lack of nuance: a film about US black ops operations in South America should be morally murky and ask difficult questions, but this has quite clear-cut goodies and baddies, and Jack Ryan has no problem always doing the right thing. The action scenes are OK, but could have benefitted from a more skilled director.

2. Knight and Day (Mangold, 2010) 16824 checks, 1 official list
Very generic action-rom-com. The action is quite good, and benefits from Cruise not only doing his own stunts but being heavily involved in the devising of them, but there's a lack of any weight or tension to the proceedings. Ends up being forgettable.
4/10

3. The Terminal (Spielberg, 2004) 47931 checks, 1 official list
Tom Hanks does a Borat-style "funny foreigner" performance, except it's not satire, and Spielberg ladles on the schmaltz and sentimentality. The ending at least has some nuance, but the manipulative script and lack of realistic motivations made me hate parts of this film.

Two and a half decades after the classic Hollywood version and made with laxer regulations, this take pumps up the sex and nudity, but not really for the better. Gray's main vice seems to be using his young body to seduce others and the film is a slog to get through at times with him doing such limited things with his youthfulness. Bits and pieces certainly work though (Berger's claim that the painting "is part of me now"; his sudden obsession with staying young).

OP has been updated again! Several folks are on track or close to complete 100 years by the end of the month. You can do it, folks! Also I added the Film Count by Year to the OP since it auto-updates as I update the tallies in Google Sheets. Check it out! Oddly enough the only year after 1913 that no one has watched a film for is 1981. Overall though, not surprisingly more recent decades seem to be getting more watches than earlier ones, also not surprising. What is surprising though is that the single most watched year is 1971, almost twice as much as any other year in the '70s. What is it about that year? Who knows...

While the premise is not exactly new or original, this is incredibly stylish with lots of lurid and accentuated colours (especially in a kooky lab) and some simply crazy special effects as faces melt, whole hands are entirely twisted off and as robotic hands rip out human hearts. The film also goes all Terminator at the end with its effects in the best possible way. The non-straightforward narrative works more often than not too. Great recommendation, flavo.

23. 12 + 1 (1969)

Image

Yet another big screen version of Ilya Ilf and Yevgeni Petrov's Twelve Chairs, this actually predates the best-known versions by Mel Brooks and Leonid Gaidai. Despite coming earlier though, this does little to distinguish itself. Vittorio Gassman certainly tries his best in a role that has him scurrying about half-undressed, but the film a lot less funny than the Gaidai version, and does really not do anything different with the story either, unlike the Cuban take.

Probably something to do with the large number of gialli and spaghetti westerns made (and readily available to watch) that year. While I have only been able to include one of them for this particular challenge, I have seen 4 Italian films from 1971 already myself - and that's out of 14 films. So, like 25% of my Italian viewing so far have been from that one single year.

This is an odd little film with little in the way of conflict until the final half-hour. Bronson and a rancher's sister fall in love far soon after meeting and experiencing initial friction. Bronson also all-too-quickly becomes a caring surrogate father to a runaway boy. If never especially exciting, the lack of conflict does at least give way to a lot of horse action with several well-trained animals in the mix, and there is something Bronson action near the end.

Forgot how good pre-code was.

17. Turksib (1929) 7/10
A documentary on the development of the Turkestan-Siberian railway. It probably sounds like the most boring plot summary ever but this a pretty gripping and beautiful '1920s Russian experimental documentary' style of film. The score absolutely makes the film setting the tone and mood for every scene from the beauty of rushing water to the frantic nature of a sandstorm to the eerie 'stillness of death'. I wonder how effective the film would be with its original score or none at all because the images are lovely but I'm not sure if it'd be enough.

18. Anna Christie (1930) 5/10
After fifteen years of being raised by relatives, the daughter of an alcoholic skipper returns to stay with him but she has a secret in her past. For the most part this just feels like a filmed play. It has that super theatrical acting and very wooden framing and movement and is talk-heavy. There's very little going on and the plot is quite simple. I found myself interested at first with Garbo's performance being nice to watch and her having a fairly interesting character for the time. But that interest dwindled once they got onto the boat and Garbo's character starts up a romance with some random sailor and it just gets more and more melodramatic. The actor playing her father was so irritating (Ahn-a!) and looked like a cartoon. The weird accents in this film were distracting and made it hard to interpret the dialogue.

19. City Streets (1931) 7/10
A racketeer's daughter goes to prison after being implicated in a murder he committed while her boyfriend joins the gang to help her. As I'm watching films chronologically this month this was a surprising step up from the previous film. The technological and creative advances in just a year are huge. I'm not sure if the comedy in this was intentional (it kind of feels like) but it has a nice sense of humour and some interesting and playful filmmaking choices. There are lots of little seemingly 'pointless' moments that build up the film's character and charm, such as Pop's remark about the bird's singing, 'how's tricks?' and the strange choice to film the cat statues during a conversation. When Nan and Kid on the beach where she smiles and plays with his hair and he just stares at her without them saying anything for a while was just a really nice tender and romantic moment. All the actors are great with all characters being interesting with their own little quirks but Sylvia Sidney and Gary Cooper are especially good with Sidney easily being one of my favourite female performances and characters. I've never even found him remotely attractive but Cooper looks really good in this film. I did start to lose a bit of interest near the end but for the most part I was hooked.
