zzzorf wrote: June 5th, 2021, 6:13 am OK been lax on challenges of late so what better challenge to get me back into some sort of groove. i'm doing the last 100 years just because it would be the most easiest with my movie watching patterns of late. Also I assume music concerts don't count as a check for a year?

1. Salinui chueok (2003) - 7/10
2. Emanuelle - Perché violenza alle donne? (1977) - 5/10
3. Bergmál (2019) - 7/10
A music concert would count if it were officially released in some capacity (theatrical, DVD, etc.). Although just random bootlegs of Phish concerts on youtube or something would not. :D
Well in that case I have another year watched as it was a TV special and a DVD release.

An allegorical baseball movie. Best thing is all the aging chracter actors getting some time on screen with Robert Redford. Too bad Redford doesn't really bring anything to the movie beyond being Robert Redford.
Check out the far superior original novel by Bernard Malamud. For one thing, it benefits from a notable absence of Robert Redford.

10. NJPW Wrestle Kingdom III (Naoki Sugabayashi-2009) Japan 1 check

New Japan Pro Wrestling's January 4th shows have been their showcase shows where they bring in talent from other promotions (CMLL, NOAH, & TNA) to compete. The main event was a real passing of the torch as Hiroyoshi Tanahashi defeats Keiji Muto (fka The Great Muta) in a 30 min match.

11. Greater (David Hunt-2016) USA 45 checks

Really clunky directing, poor acting, and heavy-handed religious dialogue make this sports biography a hagiography. But they really aren't kind to the subject as they make him into a Forrest Gump-like personage: stubborn, robotic, and simplistic.

12. Dolemite Is My Name (Craig Brewer-2019) USA 1,600 checks

Loved this. Great performances led by a motivated and focused Eddie Murphy create a very infectious underdog story of Rudy Ray Moore's rise to popularity through his comedy and first movie.
Just stop your crying, it's a sign of the times
1. Man on the Moon (Milos Forman-1999) UK/Germany/Japan/USA 1 official list 10,280 checks

Pulling this set off the shelf.

Repeat viewing:2: I Don't Want to Be a Man (1918)7.
Repeat viewing:3: The Doll (1919)9.

FTV: 4: Sumurun (1920)7.

Galloping across the stage like a pantomime villain, Paul Wegener gives a wonderfully ripe hammy turn as Old Sheikh, who Wegener has smirk with glee when making Sumurun follow his orders, and banging fist on the table fury, when he sees others not shaking in fear at him.The last title he would star in after believing his performance was “Too hammy”, co-writing/(with Hanns Kraly) directing auteur Ernst Lubitsch overacting as the hunchback Yeggar fits in smoothly with Wegener, whilst Jenny Hasselqvist brings a drizzle of fairy tale glamour as lascivious dancer Sumurun.

Based on Richard Riess’s novel (which got officially released after the film came out) and a pantomime by Friedrich Freksa, Lubitsch reunites with his regular co-writer of this period Hanns Kraly and struggles to wrestle both formats into a successful adaptation, with adultery that the Sheik discovers, being played serious, rather then the comedic The Lubitsch Touch that the film maker would later give the subject, which sits at odds with the grand multi-coloured tint farce atmosphere Lubitsch conjures up on this Arabian night.

FTV:5:The Wildcat (1921)9.

Detailed in the booklet from Masters of Cinema excellent box set that the movie flopped in Germany, (it was screened in no other countries)and that the film maker looked back on it later and said “I found the German audience in no mood for a picture which satirized militarism and war.” Co-writer/(with regular collaborator of this era Hanns Kraly) marches in with a creation which binds together the separate themes and motifs that had been weaved in his earlier works.

Inspired by his experience of working on Berlin stages under theatre director Max Reinhardt, Lubitsch ambitiously alters the matting of each shot into highly stylised unusual cardboard cut out frames, with the real Bavarian Alps being made to look like it is contained inside a snow globe.Along with continuing his surreal fantasy stylisation, Lubitsch crosses it over in the continuation of hid farce staging, with a hallucinatory atmosphere washing over the panning shots of the military fort, where comically macho troops go to battle against mustache twirling bandits.

Rolling onto the screen like a tornado, Pola Negri gives a magnetic performance as Rischka, whose fiery, seductive swaying from Negri grooves perfectly with the heightened atmosphere, and Negri untamed expressiveness clawing all the men off the screen,as the wild cat is unleashed.

Years done:1918,1919,1920,1921,1954.

This mysterious movie has been compared to Last Year at Marienbad and it is stylistically similar beyond a blurry memories angle. There are many great creeping shots as well as some divine flashbacks with washed out blacks and whites that accentuate just how ingrained his memories are. And yet, this is a film that gets less interesting as it progresses. It initially feels like a Don't Look Now tale, only to become a slightly less enticing/exciting murder mystery.

2. Mank (2020, David Fincher): 6.0 - Oldman is great, it has stunning b/w cinematography imitating the 40s style, it deals with a for a cinephile like me interesting subject; the revision of the making of an all-time classic plus it gives insight into the dealings in old Hollywood, but it's a shame the whole movie surrounding this all left me so cold.

3. Booksmart (2019, Olivia Wilde): 7.5 - Funny and with moments of truthful insights into humans as complete human beings instead of stereotypes.

4. The Mule (2018, Clint Eastwood): 6.2 - Watchable as it is, but feels like there could have been done so much more with the ambiguity about a decent senior citizen earning money to help traffic drugs and using that money for good causes.
Back to the Start
1. Army of the Dead (2021, Zack Snyder): 5.0

13. The Salvation Hunters (1925) 6/10
A man, woman and boy who are down on their luck on the docks move to the city to find a more fulfilling life. I've not enjoyed most of Josef von Sternberg's filmography liking only Shanghai Express and It out of the eleven films of his I've seen previously and, although this is not quite a favourite due its lackluster second half, I was surprised at how much I liked this. It had some neat imagery (like the reflections in the water) and just generally had a nice look. The characters don't have names and barely have personalities but this works nicely as it never feels like we're being forced to care about anyone and focus more on their situations. Georgia Hale also had a good expressive face for this but often she, and the other actors, mostly just stare into a corner. At first this gives it an interesting experimental/poetic stagey feel, but after the halfway point it started to feel repetitive and the intertitles went from feeling like reading a book as it builds the world to just being told what's happening. I was also left unaffected by the ending and didn't really buy into the apparent message the film was trying to push.

Good, that's beginnning to take shape. Would be great if count for each year could be easily made out, I can't even tell which is the most watched year (is it 1970?). So, what about removing the count/year labels (they're pretty obvious), stretching the chart horizontally (let the browser do the scaling, if necessary) and adding decade/year ticks to the time axis?

19. 1956 -- Viele kamen vorbei a.k.a. Many Passed By -- Pewas, 1956
20. 1993 -- Schramm a.k.a. Schramm: Into the Mind of a Serial Killer -- Buttgereit, 1993
21. 1971 -- Johnny Wadd -- Chinn, 1971

Viele kamen vorbei was a nice discovery, particularly recommended for lovers of mystery/suspense/thriller movies from the '50s -- in spots, it had an odd, almost Night of the Hunter feel to it. Schramm and Johnny Wadd were not nearly so enjoyable.

I'll play around with it a little. It's published via google sheets so there's only so much formatting I can do to it.

I'll play around with it a little. It's published via google sheets so there's only so much formatting I can do to it.
That reads much better, thank you!

39. La regina delle Amazzoni a.k.a. Colossus and the Amazon Queen (Vittorio Sala, 1960)
Like that episode of Futurama but a lot crappier, this one is about a men being captured by a tribe of Amazonians. The tone is oddly goofy for a lot of though which caught me off guard. I'm not the biggest fan of peplums to begin with but when they mix in low tier sitcom gags, it becomes even less appealing.

Image
40. Lycanthropus a.k.a. Werewolf in a Girls' Dormitory (Paolo Heusch, 1961)
I actually dug this one quite a bit. What we have here is a surprisingly vicious flick about a wolfman terrorizing a girls' school killing off adorable doe-eyed waifs. It has a good grasp of tension building with some very nice black & white cinematography. Much better than its schlocky B-movie title makes it sound.

Image
41. Mondo Cane 2 (Gualtiero Jacopetti/Franco Prosperi, 1963)
The follow-up to the grand-daddy of mondo movies finds us in familiar territory with the usual cruelty to animals and weird native practices we've come to expect. A couple of things that did surprise me a little was that it was actually very skillfully made compared to many mondo movies and that it's much lighter in tone in general despite some of the more lurid aspects. It really does try to show offbeat cultural elements beyond those that are just disturbing or gross (although it's got plenty of that too... you wanna see a dude eat maggots and live bees on a taco? This won't disappoint). Still, at the end of the day it's a pretty straightforward mondo movie and either you like these or you don't.

Image
42. Ursus, il terrore dei kirghisi a.k.a. Hercules, Prisoner of Evil (Antonio Margheriti/Ruggero Deodato, 1964)
Here we have another peplum although this one has a tone similar to that of something like Santos vs the Vampire Women that's as much horror as camp. It also holds the distinction of being an early effort of both Antonio Margheriti (master of Italian gothic horror) and Ruggero Deodato (of Cannibal Holocaust fame). I actually liked this one. Had a good pace and a sense of fun without veering into stupidity too much.

Image
43. 5 tombe per un medium a.k.a. Terror Creatures from Beyond the Grave (Massimo Pupillo, 1965)
Speaking of Italian gothic horror, here we have another solid one starring the imitable Barbara Steele, the first lady of Italian gothic horror herself. From Massimo Pupillo (or if you prefer his nom de plume MAX HUNTER) who's biggest claim to fame is probably Bloody Pit of Horror, this one keeps a solid pace with some nice atmospheric photography and Steele doing her special thing.

Image
44. Svegliati e uccidi a.k.a. Wake Up and Kill (Carlo Lizzani, 1966)
Based on the true story of a criminal who carried a machine gun in a violin case, Wake Up & Kill is a solid poliziotteschi about the dangers of falling prey to the wiles of a sultry nightclub singer. It does feel a little bloated at times but overall is a good example of the genre with some nice action set pieces.

Image
45. L'occhio selvaggio a.k.a. The Wild Eye (Paolo Cavara, 1967)
This was a pretty interesting, fairly obscure curio. From one of the directors of the original Mondo Cane, this is an incredibly cynical indictment of mondo "documentarians" and the lengths they go to capture grim tragedy on film to exploit. It does drag a little in places but is still worth watching for just how savage its criticisms of the genre are (there's definitely no love lost between Cavara and Jacopetti & Prosperi).

Image
46. Il dolce corpo di Deborah a.k.a. Sweet Body of Deborah (Romolo Guerrieri, 1968)
This giallo is a bit of a mixed bag about a couple on honeymoon that starts getting threats from an old acquaintance of the husband, accusing him of murder. Some of the twists were fairly interesting although a little implausible. It also felt a little slow in places. Still, overall a chance to watch the luminous Carroll Baker for 90 minutes isn't a total waste of time.

Image
47. Orgasmo (Umberto Lenzi, 1969)
And speaking of Miss Baker, here we have another of her collaborations with genre maestro Umberto Lenzi. This pic really embraces the swingin' sixties with Baker as a recently widowed American gold digger who travels to Italy and soon takes up with a lusty young stud and his "sister" (if you've seen any giallo, you should know where this is going). This was honestly fairly meh, possibly the weakest of the Baker/Lenzi team ups with an inconsistent pacing and a weird, random ending.

Image
48. Una vita violenta a.k.a. Violent Life (Paolo Heusch/Brunello Rondi, 1962)
Grim and cynical film about nihilistic youth written by Pasolini. Quite good.

22. 2011 -- El lugar más pequeño -- Huezo, 2011
23. 1974 -- Il profumo della signora in nero a.k.a. The Perfume of the Lady in Black -- Barilli, 1974
24. 1986 -- 52 Pick-Up -- Frankenheimer, 1986

52 Pick-Up has a pretty good script co-written by Elmore Leonard, based on his novel. Roy Scheider is fine as the company owner who's being blackmailed, but the trio of blackmailers are extremely well cast and their performances just keep improving over the course of the film: John Glover, Robert Trebor, and an effectively scary Clarence Williams III, who only passed away three days ago.

Worried about contracting AIDS, a gay New Yorker swears off physical intimacy, which becomes a problem when he falls for a body-building bartender in this quirky and upbeat comedy. The film is full of fantasy moments, including visits from Mother Teresa and a "just sex" game show that he imagines himself playing in alongside other gay men (see above). Patrick Stewart is also highly amusing as his best friend/mentor with some deliciously outrageous outfits.
