A fine movie about a mother that comes to San Francisco after the death of her son, drag-queen and owner of a gay bar, that her and her husband threw away when he came out. Even if there are a lot of issues with the script, some subplots that go nowhere, the lack of romance where it could have been more and the unimpressive drag routines, it was also very moving.
[and with it, I finished the secound round of LGBT+ for the bonus challenge !]
29. Victim (1961) - Gay, 1960s - 7/10
Incredible to think that it's a 1961 movie in a country where homosexuals were sent to prison. The story is intesting, the ending is impressive too. I really liked this one, even if the dialogues are not always on point. I recommand this one if you haven't seen it yet.
[and, in bonus, I finished the secound round of decades for the bonus challenge]
30. Jin nian xia tian (2001) - Lesbian, 2000s - 3/10
The worst movie I've seen so far in this challenge. Almost everything is wrong with it. First, the positive aspect : this is a lesbian movie produced and filmed in China in 2001, the same year China decided to remove homosexuality of their catalogs of mental diseases after decades of persecution and executions. So that movie is important in that way.
But in itself, I had the impression to watch a movie done by a high-school student, the cinematography is awful, the editing too and the dialogues are ridiculous (probably that the acting didn't help with them). Well... I won't insist ^^ That's a shame because you can see that everyone is trying in this movie.
31. Far from Heaven (2002) - 7/10
Another Todd Haynes movie for this challenge. I have the impression he's always giving us a good and professional movie about impossible love. But, here it's kind of the same stuff as Carol (a decade later), with the same era, the same topic. But it was fine and there's something really interesting for me in it, but I'm gonna spoil : it appears that the love between two men was less shocking that the love between a black man and a white woman. Because it's this one, the impossible love. It was beautiful, very interesting, I would have prefer a kiss between Julianne Moore and Dennis Haysbert, but that's really a detail.
32. Calamity Jane (1953) - pre-1960s, Queer - 4/10
That's a movie you can watch easily. From the beginning to the end, you'll be entertained enough. But I didn't care about those musical numbers, the love stories aren't interesting either, and the mysogyny is (of course) present in this old Hollywood movie...
The queer theme is present in several occasions. First, Calamity Jane, of course, who is a masculine girl, almost a man, living among them ; some lines are perceived as "lesbian" even if I don't agree with that. From what I saw, the movie plays with genders. Calamity Jane is in a man outfit, acting like a man, but always talking about the man she loves ; Francis, the NYC actor, forced to be in drag for a show, and Bill, forced to wear woman clothes because he lost a bet. All those moments with "gender inversion" are in fact more like a carnival situation : that inversion is supposed to be temporary so everyone can be, eventually, what they are supposed to be (men are men, women are women). We can see Calamity Jane becoming more and more feminine during the movie (even when she's in men's clothes, after the first half of the movie, she wears make-up).
At least, they try to play with gender (never with sexuality). ^^
