I will supply more "available with subs" lists and help updating the existing ones and also several "japanese movies in list x availble with subs" lists.

With the good participation of the recommendations game in the DtC nominees challenge, I decided to give it another go. Please only recommend a movie if you're planning to participate in the challenge (and ideally if you are generally willing to watch other recommendations) - shall I add a rule "first recommendation after 3 watches"? If people don't want a recommendations game, the bonus challenge could be changed.

Recommend and promote a Japanese movie of your choice. Even more important: watch other people's bonus recommendations. For every 3 recommendations you've watched for the challenge, you are allowed to recommend another one.
My recommendation is My Dangerous Wife, one of the best J-dramas that I've seen. It's a thriller, so it counts for both this challenge and the mystery/thriller challenge.

I'm planning to participate. I'm not sure if I'll watch any recommendations. It depends on what those recommendations are.

Hey Melvelet, thanks for hosting.

I'll play along registering my Japanese viewings of next month, although it'll probably be less feature-films-concentrated than my Mystery/Thriller challenge viewings, and will probably mostly consist of animated episodes (watchlist: One Piece, Steins;Gate, Patlabor, ....; to begin with).

I'd like to give a bonus challenge recommendation nomination shout-out to 水の中の八月 / August in the Water (Ishii, 1995) (here's the link to the SWAP between myself and Perception de Ambiguity on this forum from 25/11/19), for obvious reasons (it's the date).

Umm, it should be May, not April.

Anyway I'm in though probably not for many - most of my focus will likely be on the western challenge. Plan to catch up on some early films that were DTC choices or 1933 for that poll, and also some newer stuff but really I don't know.

You could try Unforgiven (haven't seen it myself though), or Sukiyaki Western Django (you probably haven't seen that one yet, since Audition was your first Miike not too long ago?)

SWD is one of the films I'm definitely planning to see. Don't have Unforgiven, have wanted to see it for a long time of course since the Clint Eastwood original is a favorite but just haven't made an effort to get it. I don't know that it counts as a western though. One interesting project would be to see westerns (or at least films tagged such by IMDb :yucky: ) from as many different countries as possible. Lots of places that made just a handful, including Japan, which has 12 features according to IMDb, though 4 of them are clearly not Japanese and just have some financial interest involved (i.e. Dead Man). Looks like SWD is the only one with any level of recognition at all though.

Good recs for that, though I didn't enjoy either very much. I prefer a hundred true Westerns to SWD and a hundred Japanese films to Unforgiven. But for research reasons .. sure.

I usually don't do challenges, so I will have to think this one over.

Seijun Suzuki‘s Sandanju no otoko (1961) aka The Man with a Shotgun, can with a bit of imagination be seen as a Japanese Western. It certain had some Western elements in it.

It starts! First in. :D

1. One Cut of the Dead (2017) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7914416/

Image

Shot in one single take, the first 37 minutes here are breathtaking from a technical viewpoint, as well as downright hilarious as Takayuki Hamatsu (as an overzealous director) keeps shoving real zombies in the direction of his cast members, hilarious calling "Action!" and relishing in how "fantastic!" it looks whenever a zombie is splattered. The middle section of the film following the 37-minute take is a mixed bag, but the final third of the film is excellent.

I'm trying to figure out which J-drama to watch next, so I watched the first 10-15 minutes of 6 different J-dramas (I'm not counting this as an entry, of course).

A House on the Slope
Gomenne Seishun!
Juhan Shuttai!
Mahoro Ekimae Bangaichi
Suika
Tokyo Girl

Suika and Tokyo Girl seemed the most interesting, so I might start with one of those, but I also have a few others that I'm considering.

Big Man JAPAN
1. One Cut of the Dead (2017)
2. Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105569/

Image

Halfway between a remake of and a sequel to Tetsuo, this follow-up tries to add more plot, which generally works against the film, leading to a slower pace and less frenetic editing. There are some cool Cronenbergish makeup effects as metal and weapons burst out of his chest, but the colour effects pale against the original's stark black and white images. That said, there is at least nary a boring moment to be had as Tsukamoto stages much chaos/madness.

This was a disappointment after the original Tetsuo absolutely floored me in February. Maybe I shouldn't have let the anticipation build up. Oh well. I now need to consider whether to plow ahead with the third film (and get another 'completed collection' on Letterboxd) or cut my losses while I'm ahead; after all, the third film is meant to be pretty bad.

1. Adrift in Tokyo (2007) - 8.4/10
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1098226/

Good start, kind of a road movie on foot, a film that was on my radar for years and which I was starting over at least three times but somehow always got distracted even though it's quite an entertaining story with a great soundtrack, lovely characters, a lot of quirky humor and relaxing shots of Tokyo.

3. Tetsuo - The Bullet Man (2009) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1176416/

While Shinya Tsukamoto once again mounts some striking images -- most notably the partially transformed protagonist dripping in oil -- the film's constant attempts to explaining what is going on undermines the imagery. The weirdness of the first Tetsuo after all was part of its charm, existing more as a series of transformations than a narrative. Once again though, there is nary a boring moment with much shaky shots, intense music choices and creative makeup.

xx. 3.5* - Asia Strikes Back [Ajia no Gyakushu] by Gakuryu Ishii (1983)

One of Gakuryu Ishii's early cyberpunk shorts. It's not really a typical narrative, instead Ishii shot the footage to use it as backing video for the concerts of one of his punk bands. That makes the short a little disjointed, on the other hand Japanese cyberpunk isn't really known for coherent narratives, so who cares. There's an underlying plot about psychic soldiers who fight wars from an underground bunker. They start a revolt and manage to make their way to the surface. Bits and pieces that work well within the setting of the film, but in the end it's all pretty garbled and messy, with Ishii paying more attention to mood and atmosphere. Ishii's punk aesthetic is already well-developed here. The soundtrack is raw and loud, the setting is grungy and dirty and the camera work explosive and intense. If Japanese cyberpunk is your thing then Asia Strikes Back delivers in spades, if not then there's probably nothing here for you. Not quite up there with Ishii's best, but a lovely treat for cyberpunk fans either way.

01. 2.5* - Another Heaven [Anaza Hevun] by Jôji Iida (2000)

While the premise of Another Heaven sounds interesting enough (a police thriller with supernatural overtones), the film itself comes off a little uninspired. Iida spends too much time on a setup that doesn't deliver anything original, while skipping through the supernatural elements without too much conviction. Detective Manabu finds a man with his brains removed in a little apartment. It's the start of a tricky cat and mouse game with a killer that seems to have superhuman capabilities. Manabu isn't discouraged though and what the help of his partner and a girl who has fallen in love with him, he slowly closes in on the killer. The film takes too long to get going, the cinematography is a little basic and Eguchi makes a pretty boring lead. Luckily Miwako Ichikawa adds some spice to the film and the ending turns it up a notch, but it's not enough to turn a 130-minute police thriller into a riveting film.

Is this even a country?

1. Heidi in the Mountains (1974, Isao Takahata)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6649276/

Image

Heidi in the Mountains is the theatrical version of Takahata's Heidi series, one of many projects he did with his regular animator and later partner Hayao Miyazaki. Both later said that many of the ideas they put into their Ghibli work was developed here, and to an extent I can see it - especially Heidi's magical dream sequence (which is wonderful) and the pure love of nature. In general though, this is very middling work in all regards. Harmless, pleasant and a fairly classic narrative style (which is not that surprising given the fact that it is adapted from a 1880s novel). It really jut feels like work for a TV show, and not a great one. I'm not going to judge Takahata or Miyazaki too harshly on it, as projects like this was why they decided to break free - and as basic as it seems, it is, again, perfectly sweet and pleasant. 5/10.

*There are two additional Heidi films, but these appear to be cut together from specific storylines from the series, and cover much of the same content as this film, rather than being sequels. From what I understand this film and the series share the overall narrative and the same scenes/work went into both - though very little info is available about the project in general.

2. Hakucyu no syugeki / Attack on the Sun (1970, Kiyoshi Nishimura)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0781589/

Image

Attack on the Sun is certainly a few steps above many of the rough and ready brutal crime films from the 70s that managed to squeeze their way into Kinema Junpo's Top 200 films from Japan - but looking at the worst contenders, that's not the best compliment. Soaked in rough sleaziness, but luckily avoiding exploitation, we find ourselves in overly familiar territory with delinquent youth and the Yakuza. The plotting is adequate, so is the filmmaking - but nothing is particularly impressive (besides touching on a supporting character's homosexuality in a fairly respectful way). It just feels like an assembly of plot points, with some slightly more free-spirited early 70s vibes wrapped up in the post-new wave style that made so many of Japan's 70s offerings feel like a downgrade from the previous decades. 5/10.

1. Onna hissatsu ken [Sister Street Fighter] (1974, Kazuhiko Yamaguchi) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073714/: 8.0 - This spin off from Sonny Chiba's Street Fighter series features as the title suggest a female lead. While this is clearly an action movie made through a male gaze, so it won't stand modern feminist standards (probably), this does mean we get a female protagonist kicking and punching a lot of ass, which is always an extra plus in my book. Lead Etsuko Shihomi makes up what she lacks in martial arts skills with her naïve charisma. There is something resembling a plot about rescuing her brother from a drugs ring, but that's just an excuse to hang plenty fight sequences on. Luckily this movie waste very little time, there is a fight scenes after almost every 5 minutes of plot. With so much fighting, zany villains and typical 70s vibe this is just pure 70s Japanese genre fun. So I was liking this movie very much and than Sonny Chiba, who makes a guess appearance to ensure cross-over audience, punches and rips someone's intestines out and it was definite this movie could never get a lower grade than a 8.

4. A Colt is My Passport (1967) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0330536/

This benefits from an intense opening with an assassination meticulously planned and executed. The ending is excellent and highly memorable too, shot on the seemingly desolate plains of a landfill site. What exists in between these strong bookends is less solid though. The protagonist's constant evasions grow a bit repetitive and much of the acting is melodramatic. The whole thing though at least rocks along well to a spaghetti western style music score.
