So I have zero photoshop skills... Would anyone like to volunteer to make a nifty banner for the Banned Films challenge for me? I'd be greatly appreciative. :)
May I suggest...

I've managed to edit a photo in Paint and handwrite a title, so I'm not sure skills are all that important...

I like it - and while it would not have been nasty enough for Trash Epics it would be just fine here - i like the idea of combining it with the PAL tape since after all this challenge is not just the Video Nasties!

Yea, I had come across quite a few Video Nasty logos but yea. I wanted to be expand it out more than that (although one of the bonus challenges will be all about them nasties).

1996–2001 All Afghanistan During the five-year reign of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, Western technology and art was prohibited and this included all films.

Does this mean we can watch any film between 1996 and 2001 and include it in the challenge? It's only 5 years but personally I want a better reason for banning it than its a film!

Banned for content, not because of media form

There are several degrees though

1. Illegal to show, Illegal to owm
2. Illegal to show, legal to own as see it in private (if you import it yourself)
3. Legal to show or own, if edited.

I guess 1 and 2 goes here. I would skip 3

By that logic almost any film ever made outside of Iran could be included, because Iran bans or censors a vast percentage of films - ooh, a woman has her hair uncovered? Two people kiss? People are drinking and it's an OK thing? Somebody says something vaguely negative towards Islam? BANHAMMER.

Point is that if you go by censorship rules in the most authoritarian/repressive/conservative countries you'd end up with everything allowed for the challenge. A better rule, if one wanted to look at individual countries, would probably be "is it banned in Sweden, France or Germany", something like that, though even in those countries there are dubious examples - are Paths of Glory and La religieuse allowed because at one time they were censored or banned in France? Is Citizen Kane OK because William Randolph Heart tried to have it destroyed?

Seems like a sticky proposition to me to open this up much beyond the original Video Nasty idea.

It's not necessarily the most interesting challenge to me either, but I am curious as to the parameters. I'll probably be gone for 2 weeks in June and seeing few if any movies so I doubt I'll compete even semi-seriously in anything next month, but I do look forward to the continuing discussion.

I'm thinking of focusing on indigenous (to the country in question) East European movies that were banned under Communism. That way lies doubles & maybe triples.
(I don't have any interest in video nasties either.)

I'll be on vacation for the second half of June so I'll be focusing heavily on doubles/triples the first half. Any chance we've allready identified some triplettes?

I have no idea what is eligible for the banned/video nasties (as we are talking about now), but there may not be many in the 50s anyway.

So my plan was to exclude any bans on all films or large swaths of films from a specific country and time period like Mochard's Afghanistan example. Basically I intended to allow anything listed on the Wikipedia List of Banned Films (which Iran really doesn't have a ton listed actually).

The example given about Citizen Kane isn't a ban. It's a grudge. Also would not count.

Additionally, I'm planning to require each film watched to include both the country it was banned in as well as the reason (violence, sex, religion, politics, other?).

I think that might be the only one. There are two Hungarian films that almost counted that were filmed in the 50's but were banned from even being released until the mid 80's, so their release date makes it appear as though they are 1980's movies. Could always see if Shugs would allow them for the 50's challenge anyway.

So To mistenkelige personer would also be a double then.

Same reason there (the date have just not been updated on imdb)

You might consider the films banned by The National Legion of Decency, although the language used there was "condemned," the Catholic church essentially barred followers from seeing the films on this list. It was especially active during the 50s with films like Kazan's Baby Doll and Preminger's The Moon is Blue gaining major attention as a result. I know that in my teen years this kind of censorship virtually guaranteed my own attendance. I also grew up with the Dallas Movie Classification board which added symbols to the MPAA Rating in the newspaper advertisements indicating what was objectionable in a film. Looking for the symbols (N for Nudity, P for Perversity, D for Drug Use, etc) gave me a handy heads-up on films that demanded my youthful attention!

On second thought, none of these films were "banned" by these organizations because they did not have that actual power - but they sure made movie-going fun!

The admins banned Emmanuelle at my college when I ran the cinema club so I replaced it with Richard Pryor: Live - we couldn't show people doing it but it was OK for him to talk about it. The next semester I scheduled Last Tango in Paris, Pasolini's The Canterbury Tales, and Fritz the Cat and almost got away with it.

Looks fine to me, flavo. Hosting really is only as big a deal as you make it. I don't do bonus challenges and I rely on people keeping each other honest, so I just update the tallies once a day or so and that's it.
Personal film goals for 2019.

Looks good to me, and I for one am kind of glad to see a more "limited" challenge. But I probably won't be participating much - after actually putting in effort this month, and computer issues, and being away for probably 2 weeks in June, it's probably time to take a rest from this stuff for me. Not good timing alas for moi but I hope it's fun for everyone else.

And I know most people aren't going to start writing reviews - or even saying if they liked stuff or not - but I know I"ll be more interested in looking at the thread if some nice disgusting old VHS box-covers get posted. That was one of the fun things in the low-rating challenge last year.

I wouldn't focus on it, but I might record things that count towards it. I'd be afraid that it would overlap quite a bit with one (and possibly two) of the official challenges next month. Are you thinking one month only, or something that would last for a bit longer?
