I don't know about every day. Updates every 48-72 hours would be good (not sure if that's manageable for you). Then again, most folks are less interested in having an up-to-date leaderboard than I am, so don't let that stop you are keen on hosting the Cannes Challenge.

If you're absolutely stuck on Iran I could give it a try, but you know....

May should be a month without too many responsibilities or film events for me, so I think I might be able to do the Iran challenge - it'd be my first so I'm sure I'll be asking for tips.

@3eyes and/or OldAle1...

I'm happy to help/support any way I can if you want to host the Iran challenge... I have an Excel template built to make it easier for you (it autoformats the table and calculates ranks), which I could rebuilt in Google Sheets if that's easier.

It sounds like OldAle really wants to have a crack at Iran (3eyes sounds less excited, unless I'm misreading that).

So, at this stage we have:

Westerns - shugs

Iran - OldAle1

Cannes - albajos or max?

@albajos: your Leone/cat gif provided much hilarity among some Friends who were over last night.

I think 72a still wants to host that one, and someone (flavo?) volunteered for Video Nasty already, but unless I am mistaken, we're still yet to have a volunteer to host Eastern Europe.

I can host the Eastern European challenge (it should give me an incentive to watch more Romanian movies). I don't remember if Russia is allowed in this challenge or not, though, since it had its own challenge.

Not sure about the scope of this but since we're such an international gang, I guess banned in country x is game? This makes fascinating reading, anyhow:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_banned_films

e.g.Noah banned in much of the Middle East for showing a prophet. I thought it was only Mohammed...

Wait - are we at 72a for 1950s, shugs for Eastern Europe, and flavo5000 for Bannded films? Already?!?

And yeah - Eastern Europe usually excludes Russia, since they have their own challenge and a bit enough industry to be classified on its own.

Yep. I've even taken the liberty of making an ICM checklist for it:

I was planning on having a couple of bonus challenges as well.

Please include the former Soviet republics this time around. They are in Eastern Europe. I wouldn't like to see a repeat of the last challenge.

Well not all of them are, unless your definition of Eastern Europe includes the Caucasus and even Central-Asia. ;) But I get your drift.

Yes, I suppose I could have worded that better. I'm just referring to the ones that were specifically excluded in the last running of the challenge.

I made a doodle to help us decide this: https://doodle.com/poll/gi9iqqfdxqb6nsqu

Personally, I wouldn't allow them since they were already allowed in the Russian challenge.

they were allowed but only for films made during their time within the Soviet Union. films made before and after were not.

And I'm the opposite - I would include them. They were only allowed in the Russian challenge during Soviet years. This would be the first opportunity for modern films from those countries to count for an official challenge. They're also going to have a very particular and different take on "Russia" that you're not going to see from the films you're going to see/would be eligible for the Russian challenge.

What I meant all former Soviet republics are allowed, but only movies made after the fall (or before the rise) of the Soviet Union. No country ban here.

Sorry for the confusion. :D I updated the doodle title for extra clarity.

Oh, not this silly issue once again. Pfffffttttt, one of my favourite regions in cinema (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania) and their golden era films the subject of purges. I will be boycotting the challenge if this unenlightened stance (speaking frankly, as that is what I consider it to be) is enacted.

I'll let the poll run for a few days and see what people want from this challenge. Maybe in the future the Russian challenge could be strictly about Russia, to avoid situations like these.

The Soviet-era films of these republics should be eligible for a Russia/USSR challenge.

All films from the various republics/now independent countries should be eligible for a Eastern European challenge.

That's my no-frills approach to this issue and I believe it is one that includes and embraces both paths to a reasonable degree.
That's all, folks!

Well, upon further consideration on this subject during my lunch break, I came to the conclusion that I am fine with either outcome, so I am removing my vote from the doodle.

I'll let the poll run until the 25th, as I want to create the topic a bit earlier. Peace.

I guess in future years we could sidestep the problem by alternating Russia/USSR with Eastern Europe in different years, so we could comfortably have x-SSRs in both.

Thanks, peeps & Roger. I'm sure i'll be monitoring what's getting watched in the challenges once I get back. I just checked the complete Video Nasty list and was surprised to see I still have 100 unchecked. Scanning through I suspect I saw at least a dozen of those way back in the 80's but I need to get back to being Nasty.

Ah, you're working off the longer Nasty list then (incl. the titles that were technically banned but not eligible for prosecuted)... the more the merrier!

So I have zero photoshop skills... Would anyone like to volunteer to make a nifty banner for the Banned Films challenge for me? I'd be greatly appreciative. :)
