Last post of the challenge! Thanks shugs for hosting! I enjoyed this one a lot. I really dig a good mystery.

Image
67. A Study in Terror (James Hill, 1965)
The Mystery: Sherlock Holmes is tasked with discovering who Jack the Ripper is. Can he discover his identity before he kills again?
The Verdict: This was a pretty good non-canon Sherlock Holmes story that has a nice balance of intrigue and horror elements, acting almost as a proto-slasher at times. It's not perfect though. Some of the seemingly clever deductions feel a little obvious and John Neville as Sherlock feels a little too breezy and good-humored for the notorious cold, clinical asshole of the stories. I did enjoy his scenes with John Morley's Mycroft though.

Image
68. Murder with Pictures (Charles Barton, 1936)
The Mystery: A newsman tries to help a woman wrapped up in a murder while the cops are on her trail.
The Verdict: Script-wise this one is pretty decent but the low budget and creaky acting hampers it as a picture. It also feels like it's trying to pack too much story into too short a runtime. It could've easily been another 20 minutes or so and had a little room to breathe.

It was a thriller until the end with you sneaking up so close in points. :D And you deserve the trophy no less than me - I basically just watched 2 TV series and 5 noirs or so. A decent serial killer movie mixed with a family drama.

That does it for me. Good challenge.

I passed by the Minuteman Missile Museum when I visited South Dakota last fall and afterwards felt compelled to rewatch WarGames. It still holds up for me, plot holes and all. A lot of that has to do with simple but very effective suspense-building by Badham. The first scene, especially, with John Spencer and Michael Madsen as the missileers, stands out. It's not complicated but also not easy -- just the right editing and the right pacing can make a scene great. Those missile crews are still out there, deep underground, every second of the day. From what I understand, the technology they use hasn't changed that much since the 1980s, partly because the ancient tech is impossible to hack.
It does start out pretty well, I'll give it that. It just goes downhill fast for me. Good point about the technology; would that we had the foresight to safeguard all of our important systems (e.g., power grid, phone lines) so well. But then the government isn't for the most part paying for those things, profit-oriented corporations are.

it's a thrilling mystery how people watch so many fucking movies
1. The Fugitive (Andrew Davis, 1993) (re-watch)
2. The Benson Murder Case (Frank Tuttle, 1930)
3. El jinete sin cabeza / The Headless Rider (Chano Urueta, 1957)
4. La tête d'un homme / A Man's Neck (Julien Duvivier, 1933)
5. Remote Control (Jeff Lieberman, 1988)
6.Main Street After Dark (Edward L. Cahn, 1945)
7. The Fourth Protocol (John Mackenzie, 1987) (re-watch)
8. WarGames (John Badham, 1983) (re-watch)
9. The Liquidator (Jack Cardiff, 1965)
10. Palm Springs (Max Barbakow, 2020)
11. The Seduction (David Schmoeller, 1982)
12a) The Return of Sherlock Holmes: The Man With the Twisted Lip (Patrick Lau, 1986)
12b) The Return of Sherlock Holmes: The Six Napoleons (David Carson, 1986)

2x52 minute TV episodes, 104 minutes total.

I've been slowly re-cycling through the Granada Holmes series for a couple of years now; probably these are 3rd viewings for each, maybe 4th. This remains one of my absolute favorite TV series, and because the stories are totally self-contained it's fun to just watch one or two every few months - it's comfort food for just the particular mood that strikes. These are two of the very best IMO, especially the first. Twisted Lip is one of those rare stories where there is no crime - though there seems to be at first. A middle-class woman comes to Holmes and Watson because she fears her husband may have been murdered, or kidnapped; a lascar and a Malay may be involved, and these events took place in a very disreputable part of town; there is also an opium parlor glimpsed at the beginning, with Holmes pretending to be an addict while working on a different case - interesting how he can, apparently, use or leave opium as he wishes but cannot resist the power of cocaine. I'm not sure I figured this one out right away on first viewing but it's not that hard though in a sense it's just a bit far-fetched.

The Six Napoleons is also very good and offers more "action" than usual, with a vicious little knife-fight between a couple of Italians who apparently know each other in the beginning, and a story involving both murder and six identical busts of Napoleon that Inspector Lestrade is positive can't be connected - ah, but Holmes, and we viewers, know better. Future Star Trek: The Next Generation regular Marina Sirtis appears here in a small role, speaking only Italian - there is actually quite a bit of (unsubbed) Italian here and between this episode and the previous one you get more of a sense of the diversity of peoples in London in Victorian times than we often see on screen.

That's it for me. Wasn't looking to really compete here this month and I certainly didn't, nor did I find new favorites, though even the bad films in this group were kind of fun. Thanks for hosting shugs.
