GOAL

RULES
- Each feature film (over 40 minutes) counts as one entry.
- 80 minutes of short films or miniseries/TV episodes counts as one entry.
- Films must be watched one at a time and at single speed (not sped up).
- Rewatches are allowed and are good for the soul.
- Please include year of release when listing your viewings.

I will make the thread better in the evening, sorry for the delay.
Hooray. :circle: And no problem. I'm just excited that you are still up for hosting. And you managed to get the thread active before it hit April on my side of the world too! Not that I'm planning to watch anything immediately after midnight, mind you, unless I can't sleep... :pinch:

Thanks again for hosting. Really looking forward to this one this year. I have over 75 films lined up. Have to see how many I can actually get through.

I'm going to at least try to get through the DTC nominees I own on DVD or blu-ray and will get to whatever else I can while balancing the animation challenge.

It's not just you, I only put placeholders for now.

Mind sharing your approximate ratings? :)
For this particular challenge they are (even) more useful

I would like to report nominators as well: did you get them from one of the list or did you search through the nomination thread ?

I never miss those. What I did miss this year was having an unofficial challenge during the nomination phase, but like 72aicm I still wasn't idle during this time. Here are the nominees I watched for the unofficial unofficial challenge:

American Reflexxx (2015, Alli Coates)

I've been meaning to get around to watching some live action Hideaki Anno work. I may use this challenge as an excuse to finally do so.

He made some interesting live action films, but it's very different from his animated work. But even his live action films are very hard to compare. Love & Pop is interesting but not very polished, Shin Gojira is fun but hardly a masterpiece ... Ritual on the other hand, everything about that film is just right :)

I've got a movie-quiz going on tonight, so it's going to be another slow start on the challenge for me. But I like the bonus challenge idea and would already like to present my pick for it:
From my personal nominations, Kochegar (2010) https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/kochegar/

My favorite (of what I've seen) from Balabanov. He made a few hardhitting movies, coming from the wave of "black cinema" that got made in Russia from the early 90's onward in reaction to years of censorship, combined with the econical state of the country. This one has an edge to it for sure, but with strong (color) cinematography it is not all just doom and gloom. I don't see many people on this forum checking out this kind of cinema, but I'm sure some here would really love it, so all I am saying is give this one a change ;)

It starts! First in. :D

1. Black Is... Black Ain't (1994)

Image

Marlon Riggs reflects on the black experience in America in this fascinating documentary that examines shifting notions and changing ideas over time. Especially fascinating is learning about how earlier on black folks took offence at the term "black" and insisted on being called "coloured". Also intriguing is a look into language bias and preconceptions about talking jive versus the King's English and so on. Less engaging are the deflections into cooking.

Oh yea, I forgot he did Shin Godzilla which I have seen. That one actually felt like something Anno would do though. Pretty odd take on Godzilla but I liked it.

Yeah, though I felt it was pretty in line with most other Japanese 90s/00s Godzilla films. I think Kitamura's one stood out more :)

Final Wars was a hell of a lot of fun. Some people complain that some of the Godzilla movies are too slow in places with not enough monster fights. For those people, I suggest Final Wars.

Haha, so true. For Final Wars though, the common complaint seems to be the "MTV-style" editing. I watched it again last year and though I feared it would bomb, I was really surprised at how alive it still felt.

I hope to be fairly active here, along with some Middle East stuff I've been wanting to watch for a while.

TCM released its April schedule yesterday, including twenty eligible titles. Since I went to the effort to list them for myself, figured I might as well share along with the airing date in case others are interested, although this may only be useful for North American participants.

April 1: Air Force (possibly too late for this one)
April 3: Caged, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Charade (!!!)
April 4: The Entertainer
April 6: The Four Feathers
April 9: The Heart is a Lonely Hunter
April 10: The Hunchback of Notre Dame
April 11: Inherit the Wind
April 12: It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
April 13: Judgment at Nuremberg, Key Largo (one of my nominees)
April 14: Ladies in Retirement
April 16: The Man Who Knew Too Much
April 21: A Patch of Blue, The Picture of Dorian Gray
April 24: The Search
April 26: Stage Door, A Star is Born
April 28: This Land is Mine (!!!)

I've previously seen most of these but plan to record the few I haven't. Ladies in Retirement, which I'd never heard of before this year's nominees, looks especially interesting on that front. One other nominee, Mervyn LeRoy's excellent Waterloo Bridge, unfortunately only airs on May 1. The full schedule is available here: https://31days.tcm.com/?fbclid=IwAR3Kb0 ... RamJi8rqTM

1. Jallikattu (2019) - 4/10

Bonus Game Recommendation:
Mes séances de lutte (2013) - Jacques Doillon
I understand this won't be a movie for everyone but I think more people need to see it. An emotional rollercoaster from one of my more favourite foreign directors.

I'll probably post a handful of watches at the end of the month. Focusing more on Middle East this month, but there are a number of cross-overs and a few other DTC noms I've got my eye on.

@AB537 since Waterloo Bridge is at the end of the alphabet, it's highly likely that you'll be able to watch it on May 1st and still have time to submit your rating as a write-in ballot, since Ángel always reveals the results alphabetically.

Might as well add the nominations I saw in March here as well. Some of them I may have seen before they were nominated, but since they don't count for this challenge anyway, I'm listing them so others can make get some recommendations.

Ratings are my personal rating out of 10, and then my likely DTC rating out of 6.
Films in bold I'll most definitely rate 4, 5, or 6 and really hope they make the list. Films in italics I'm less sure about and will probably get a 2 or 3.

0. Skagafjörður (2004 short) - 3.0 - 0
0. Ma vie de Courgette [My Life as a Zucchini] (2016) - 8.2 - 6 - my own nomination
0. Marty (1955) - 8.0 - 5
0. Tulevaisuus ei ole entisensä [The Future Is Not What It Used to Be] (2002) - 6.4 - 1
0. Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt (1989) - 7.8 - 4
0. The Queen (1968) - 7.8 - 4
0. Komisario Palmun erehdys [Inspector Palmu's Error] (1960) - 8.0 - 5 - This kind of felt like a Finnish The Thin Man in tone. Looking forward to the sequels.
0. Plaire, aimer et courir vite [Sorry Angel] (2018) - 7.8 - 4
0. The Telegram Man (2011 short) - 7.6 - 3 - or maybe 2. Decent short, but not sure if I consider it "canon-worthy"
0. Films to Break Projectors (2017 short) - 3.4 - 0

And for the Bonus Game, my pick is Zero Patience (1993), one of my nominations and my favourite film that I saw last year. I gave it 8.8/10. The only films I rated higher were Hannah Gadsby's standup special Douglas (2020) (9.2) and two shorts: Turn It Around (2017) (8.6) and Nursery Rhymes (2018) (8.8) (the latter of which I nominated as well). Zero Patience is definitely not a film I think everyone will like, but I firmly believe it deserves a wider audience and I thought it was simply fantastic.

DTC Nominees
1. Black Is... Black Ain't (1994)
2. Chilly Scenes of Winter (1979) [aka 'Head over Heels']

Image

For someone who pretty much acts like a stalker throughout, John Heard is remarkably sympathetic in the lead role here, allowing us to feel his heartbreak as his crush tells him that she would rather stay married to someone who loves her less passionately than he does. Tone-wise this is a weird movie though and his on/off talking to the camera is strange too, but Heard gets so into his character (his street vendor interactions especially stand out) that this works.

1. Donovan's Reef (1963)
A threadbare plot means that this is little more than John Wayne and friends hanging around some Pacific islands. Also, because this is a John Wayne move, there are two brawls in which no one gets even slightly hurt. These are apparently supposed to hilarious. It's also the third movie I've seen in which Wayne spanks his love interest -- I used to see this trope as a projection of toxic masculinity, but now I wonder whether it's merely a man revealing his fetishes on screen.

Bonus Game: I will promote I Dream in Another Language (2017)

1. Only the Brave (Joseph Kosinski, 2017) 7.5/10 ... I'm surprised this one didn't get more attention after its release, seems like one that should have done really well at the box office (and better than most films that do)

My bonus challenge nominee is L'aîné des Ferchaux - Magnet of Doom (Jean-Pierre Melville), a badly underseen gem by my favourite French director and my least checked DtC nominee this year. It's currently available on Criterion Channel in USA and Canada.

DTC Nominees
1. Black Is... Black Ain't (1994)
2. Chilly Scenes of Winter (1979)
3. Chase a Crooked Shadow (1958)

Image

Visited by a stranger at her overseas villa who claims to be her brother, a young woman has trouble convincing anyone that he is a fraud in this intriguing noir. We gradually come to question the protagonist's sanity, and the whole thing is incredibly enthralling as the motives of the possible-brother very slowly emerge. The film looks sensational too with Erwin Hiller emphasising every shadow while generally filming from angles that aptly seem a little off.

I don't know who nominated it, but given that it is my first 6/6 film that I have watched for this challenge, I will promote Chase a Crooked Shadow for the Bonus Challenge Game. :ICM: I assume I can't claim a bonus challenge point for having just watched it myself. Or can I? :shifty:

A melodrama set in Georgia circa 1910. William Lundigan does well as a young minister, very genuine in his concerns for the spiritual welfare of his flock and not easily deterred. Most of the film though comes from the perspective of Susan Hayward as his wife who is less effective. She has one almost great scene in which she uses metaphors to tell off a flirtatious young woman, but this turns into formulaic squawking as she then openly tells her to go away.

Alright, I'll join the exploration party too, several of the nominees were already on my watchlist anyway, and will start with a few Anglo classics. As for the bonus game, I will pick one of my last year's two holdovers: En la selva no hay estrellas (Robles Godoy, 1967).

Image

1. CASH ON DEMAND (Lawrence, 1961) — A good unadorned Hammer Christmas heist that puts both the banker and robber in the same bag (a pleasure for many to see, I presume) after teaching the former, much along the lines of Mr. Scrooge, a lesson to his merciless obsession with efficiency and self-proclaimed idea of moral dignity, it will appeal to fans of the Cushing/Morell duo and those who enjoy films that take place entirely in a single indoor set. 7/10

Image

2. BUCHANAN RIDES ALONE (Boetticher, 1958) — An interesting and promising political setting at the beginning (USA border town owned by a corrupt family that runs into trouble with a Mexican pro-revolutionary honourable family) turns into a sort of more or less plain chase and deception game, not disappointing after all, because everything is skilful and concise, just like all the other four Boetticher’s westerns I’ve seen so far, and besides, Randolph Scott is becoming slowly one of my favourite cowboys. 7/10

Thanks for watching one of my DTC nominations. Glad you liked it. Probably my favourite Boetticher western after The Tall T. I was surprised to discover that it was on no Official Lists.
