114a. Mobile Suit Gundam: Twilight AXIS E1-6 (2017)
114b. Pikachu no Wanpaku Island a.k.a. Pikachu's Island Vacation (2007)
114c. Lupin III: Secret Files OVA (1969-1978)
Twilight Axis is pretty skippable unless you've read the original text and want a supplementary visual experience. With the episodes only being a few minutes long, there's little time for character building, so it mainly just dramatizes the mecha fights with little context. Pikachu's Island Vacation is beyond annoying. Easily one of the most obnoxious Pokemon things I've seen. Lupin III Secret Files is basically a compilation OVA of the original pilot for the Lupin III TV series as well as a remastered, remixed version of the pilot along with some trailers for other Lupin films dropped in the middle. I would only recommend it for hardcore Lupin fans. Much of it is more character bios with a fairly generic short caper at the end.

115. Gekijô-ban poketto monsutâ: Adobansu jenerêshon pokemon renjâ to umi no ôji manafi a.k.a. Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea (2006)
Another day, another mediocre Pokemon movie. The climax felt way too protracted with the temple flooding and everyone trying to get ahold of the crystals.

Image
116. La jeune fille sans mains a.k.a. The Girl Without Hands (2016)
This was a very visually distinctive take on a Brothers Grimm fairytale about a girl tricked into having her hands chopped off, becoming a queen and living in exile with her trial. The story is one of Grimms' more elaborate ones and works quite well in the context of this almost abstract animation style that blends what appear to be hand-drawn sketches with mid-century modernist backdrops into a visually arresting experience.

Image
117-118. Demon Prince Enma E1-4 (2006)
Pretty solid horror mini-series from the mind of Go Nagai (Devilman, Cutey Honey) about a demon detective sent to recapture demons who have escaped Hell to torment the living. It's bleak and violent in places but also can get silly at times as well. Not a horror masterpiece but still pretty well-made.

119. WolfWalkers (2020)
Cartoon Saloon hasn't disappointed me yet and WolfWalkers is no different. With a narrative that reminds me a little of Pixar's Brave but with a more nuanced and layered approach, it sports beautiful animation filled with swirling mystical colors that provide a feast for the eyes. I will say I think the LGBT angle is probably an example of reading more into something that what's intended (and the director of the film has said as much as well) but regardless a film that stands the test of time is one that can be interpreted in a variety of ways beyond what the filmmakers originally envisioned, and if people are inspired by this one, more power to them.

Something seems to be missing from your post, Armo! What are the sociological implications of The Croods 2? Don't tell me there are no underlying messages, willfully or not, on class, race, gender and human's impact on nature and other species. I don't buy it. :P
This one mostly had the conflict between safety (parent overprotectionism) and liberal parenting. It's not very profound here. Also somewhat critical of individualism but not to the same level as the real progressive toons. Seen it all before. The Croods 1 is a 7 btw.

38. Waka okami wa shogakusei! (Okko's Inn) 3.5/10 - Kublai Khan fav - now here's a movie for conservatives (well, conservative parents) - mercifully they eschewed most of the cooking filler of the serie but there's still more corpses than needed:

+ 6 episodes of its TV series (72min) ~3/10 watched a bit of this b4 the movie. i quit before the next cooking episode for obvious reasons and the next 2 episodes are also def about cooking, then watched the last few eps which were not about cooking.

Will log this one with other scraps in the end.

Who knows what aces y'all intimidating challenge geeks got up your sleeves. I only caught up to you yday.
I didn't have to cook today and slept little. Very good day until low sleep caught up with my attention. It's not going to show in log here as I was mostly watching the long series (might finish tomorrow) and the movies from Greater Levant.

9. Le roi et l'oiseau (Fr 80) - Rewatch
As frequently happens these days, I have no memory of having seen this before. There are visuals that seem like homage to Metropolis. The king's narcissism strikes a familiar chord. Lots of familiar tropes but it felt fresh overall.

16. The Simpsons: Season 3: Episodes 21-24 (1992)

That completes the season, and 3 seasons in, the show still hasn't hit its prime. They were still trying to be a touching family sitcom with a lot of Bart, and not the Homer-focused pop culture satire they would become.

Spoiler

Honeymoon bliss soon turns to horror for a newlywed couple after the husband discovers latent superpowers in this weird and offbeat Billy Plympton feature. With minimal dialogue and lots of whacky images, the plot is sometimes hard to follow but it is always easy to appreciate Plympton's satirical take on relationships once the honeymoon phase is over; just how well do you know your spouse? Many NSFW sexual gifs floating around; I think this one is okay.

And that's it for me, flavo. Thanks for hosting! A terrific end to things between When the Wind Blows and this Plympton venture, but now I must focus on the other two challenges in the remaining days left this month.

So yeah, I won't be competing for a Top 5 position, but I have a side challenge for Armo - are you are to double my score? :P

No, I've seen it but that was admittedly nearly 20 years ago. Part of why I'm not watching End of Evangelion despite never having watched that one, it is a direct follow up to the film.

These are a retelling of the original story though. They add things and even change things but they stand on their own IMO. It might be more interesting to have the original versions fresh in mind to be more confident of what is different and what is the same, since as is I mostly get vague recollections (kind of an, oh ya, I recognize that, moments), but they certainly work on their own terms.

May Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

120-122. Hakumei to Mikochi E1-12 (2018)
This was a cute anime series I've been watching with the family over the last couple weeks about a couple of very small gnome-like people who live amongst talking animals. Despite the fantasy setting, it's very much a slice-of-life series with little to no real conflict most of the time. It's a pleasant, very chill show where it's more important to watch a weasel teaching carpentry and little people cooking tasty-looking dishes than to see big epic fights. Nice change of pace.

Image
123. Lego DC: Shazam!: Magic and Monsters (2020)
Another amusing Lego DC movie, this one focused on Captain Marve-...ahem... Shazam and his integration into the Justice League and fight against Mr. Mind and Black Adam. It does actually capture some of that same youthful exuberance that the Shazam live action movie does.

Image
124. Batman: Soul of the Dragon (2021)
I watched this a couple weeks ago but forgot to log it. It's a recent DC-animated film that focuses on Bruce Wayne's early years in martial arts training where he meets up with a group of other fighters including the Bronze Tiger. At times, it seems to want to play out like a kung fu blacksploitation movie with Bronze Tiger as the ersatz Jim Kelly. The plot is kind of weak and feels rushed in places to be honest with a certain predictability and blandness that even has Batman sitting on the sidelines for the climax that makes it a lesser DC-animated movie.

amn't. it's enough to save myself from being doubled by Flavo-over-9000-pts-in-challenges.

ceded a huge chunk of time to work today, not so rosey. was barely able to finish the series today b4 sleep. it only looks like I had a great day.

you should never give up since my life is not so safe, I can get completely derailed easily.

39. Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge 5/10 - if one skips intro, one might come away from this not thinking that it was overly violent. much prefer the 95 movie.
40. Mutafukaz 8.5/10 - Tourdesb-Onderhond fav - Attacquez le Blocque at the start, then other things. made by 4C!
41. Technotise Edit I Ja 6.5/10 - the worst animation I've seen in a while. fsr the reviews claim otherwise. also the voice acting. instead you get cool designs and technobabble.
42. Nasu Suitcase no Wataridori (Nasu: A Migratory Bird with Suitcase) 6/10 - Onderhond fav - still got >20 to go on his top 100 animations - this was <1hr - do they go cycling/racing in the rain in Japan? or is this for drama? Making a foreign racer to be a goofy villain is not so nice.
43. Windaria 6/10

44-65. Steven Universe 7/10 with patches of 8-9 - a check in all those diversity-characters lists including intersex with a looooot of good messages with a few episodes dedicated to delivering those, and huge on (anarcho)pacifism (especially ep 6.8 - lone 10/10) and feminism, and with villains making right wing arguments and even "deadnaming" and misgendering Steven. teh 1st and last season r a bit more episodic than the rest.

175/8 where 3 "double" eps are 22 instead of 11min + 1 quadisode of 45min + ~20 mins of ANIMATED extras that are LISTED ON IMDB = 22pts with ~74m carried over!

is this good for a lot of points (22 blocks of Steven) in the Rainbow thing?
#BONUS Style Profile: All the Colors of the Rainbow (same goes for at least Missing Link if Wolfwalkers is indeed just an odd coincidence)
Why the animation medium is well-suited to tell the stories? Well that's what kids watch, innit? And kids are the most important audience. And you can hide the messages in fantasy so the conservos and other no-politics-in-movies-please folks may miss them even being there. I guess not with Steven Universe which is a lot of times very in your face / simple to the point of facepalm.

66-67. With 179m left over from short anime (promares20m+inn72m), Steven (74m) and the shorts marathon (13m) that makes => 2 more pts (off 82 & 84) which I will now cash in and save the remaining 13m (2 shorts) in case I need them.

68. Steven Universe The Movie 6/10 The Musical. Steven gets debuffed and the others get amnesia.

I was too tired to post about it yesterday, but I finished A Place Further Than the Universe. I thought it was average. Some parts were good, but there was also a lot of poorly written dialogue, and I didn't find the premise very interesting either. But at least it was better than Kyousougiga (which I watched earlier in the month).

Ok, as everyone is doing this, I'm trying the "overtime" strategy myself before I forget it or decide to stay offline for a few days (ha, ha).
I'm at 29 points right now. My collected overtime is now 164 minutes = 2 points, plus some 4 minutes overtime that I will bitterly need soon.
OtGW overtime: 30 min
Eva overtime: 64 min
Lain overtime: 70 min

Sources: OtGW & Eva, Lain

I hereby declare to have 31 points. :shifty:
Correct me if I'm doing this wrong.

sol wrote: April 27th, 2021, 3:25 pm Ah, good to know, Bing - thanks for that. I won't have time to watch it this month, but it's on two Official Lists and also eligible next month... :whistling:
I needed to look up what you meant since I don't expose myself to all that challenge nonsense - Japan coming up next? So you're telling me I can continue with watching all my Anime and cash in sweet points for that? :woot:
re: Eva - 1.0 & 2.0 are mostly a retelling of the series' plot which explores and alters more and more plot points. Anyone can start at zero for that if he wants to. Only downside to this is that if you've never watched any NGE, you can't experience the novelty effect of the series all the same.
(By the point of 3.0, the new films have nada in common with the original.)

Well it's 13 eps, right? So 3 pts + 1 ep left over which is like 20-25mins (also depending on whether it had unique credits if ya wanna bother about that).
Because of credits, episodes are usually no longer than 20 minutes average (or 10 minutes with short ones even though it's 11 minutes actual length). So 20x4=80.

Oh .. yes, it's 13 episodes, each 25 minutes. I don't know that we are expected to subtract credits?
IMDb says 316 minutes altogether. My figure came from selecting all episodes on my hard drive and taking what stands there :whistling:

If this is so complicated, maybe I withdraw my plans on another Japan challenge.

No idea. This is my 1st challenge in a while. I'd certainly not count them as over 80. It's just time scraps. If I had watched more than 80 minutes of a single TV series, I'd forget the minutes over 80 unless it approached 160.

Talk about scraps, I just found more short SU extras. (I'm not logging em)

I personally don't generally mess with carry over points. It seems to overcomplicate it when everything else isn't based on runtime. So with a 13 episode series, I'd log 3 points for the first 12 and just save that extra episode to pair with another ~60 minutes of shorts. And sometimes I don't even bother doing that. Like if you notice I've logged a couple of DVD compilations of shorts. With those they were usually more like 90 to 110 minutes but I just counted it as one point out of laziness.

I seriously have to reconsider the choices in my life.

It sounded easier in mjf's post

I will stick to my 29 points now and add this:

30.-33. Cowboy Bebop (1998-99) E14-26 -> 13x ~25 min = 320 min = 4 points

Spent my last hour on r/CowboyBebop and it was totally worth it.
Do we have hardcore fans or more of the "well it's okay but overrated" crowd in this thread?

Weight carried
1. Over the Garden Wall (2014)
2.-8. Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995-1996)
9. The End of Evangelion (1997) (9/10)
10. Evangelion 1.11 (2007) (8/10)
11. Evangelion 2.22 (2009) (8/10)
12. Evangelion 3.33 (2012) (6,5/10)
13. Raya And The Last Dragon (2021) (7/10)
14. Dinosaur (2000) (6,5/10)
15.-17. Serial Experiments Lain (1998)
18.-21. Paranoia Agent (2004)
22. Fist of the North Star (1986) (6,5/10)
23.-26.a Cowboy Bebop (1998) E1-13
26.b Kiwi (2006) (8/10)
27. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000) (7,5/10)
28. Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004) (7,5/10)

Well, I certainly won't be watching it in English!

@Torgo: distrust everything that gets universal praise. It either means people are afraid to speak their minds or are inflating their opinions. Of course, it might be a little different for series, as even less people are crazy enough to finish an entire series they don't like.

A 4th Madoka Magica movie was announced a few days ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAR0CMwEfes

I was happy with the way movie 3 ended, so I'm curious to see how they continue the story.

The second film was definitely a step up from the first one, with Shinbo's style getting more room to shine. Looking forward to see in what direction the third film will go.
