amn't. it's enough to save myself from being doubled by Flavo-over-9000-pts-in-challenges.

ceded a huge chunk of time to work today, not so rosey. was barely able to finish the series today b4 sleep. it only looks like I had a great day.

you should never give up since my life is not so safe, I can get completely derailed easily.
Just to be clear, I'm not giving up here because of you. The Top 5 race is just too tight for me at the moment and I would really rather concentrate on the other challenges to cement my placements there. Plus, the unwatched stuff that I have lined up for those challenges is a bit more promising than the Box Office crap that I mostly had left on my Animation watch-list.

But yeah, I'm definitely curious to see how well you can perform in this one over the next two days. Flavo is untouchable but who will come the closest and wind up in 2nd place? You? Lonewolf? Bing? Trav? JD? Not me, that much I know. tehe

no, 360 or a 351 maybe. dizziness does help too.

I'll let everyone catch up a bit if they're able. Who knows what 45m checks they have been harboring. I've a lot to watch for the Levant challenge.

I'm at work during the last two days of April, so if you see enough there to knock me off first place, there's not much I can do about it. Have fun.

OP updated once again and we continue to have a really tight race for 2 through 5 with Armoreska charging in from behind with a massive Steven Universe series watch! Who will make it into the Final Five?! We only have a couple more days to find out!

You did a minor mistake on my score, granting me one point too much! I'm an honest soul. (Maybe you did it out of pity because I'm too mentally troubled to make sense of my runtimes)
As the challenge host, you need to make a call on my overtime formula from yesternight. In my opinion, the "80 minutes of TV / shorts" applies.

Maybe so. That's fine though. I think even with it, it's still prolly a much better kids show for today than most.

That's fine since there isn't a rule on carry-over points. I think I meant to give you 2 extra points but messed up the math somewhere.

My bad. I actually forgot to add your Rainbow bonus point. It'll be in the next update.

And as far as the bonus challenge, it was pretty much designed to get people to watch more than just anime and American box office crap (hence why it has mostly tanked since folks seem determined to watch mostly those two anyway).

To me worked wonders since I'm slowly working on the weird list :)

I just wished Disney and Ghibli could have been separate challenges and maybe next year including some more director's challenges.

Seems tough to score pts in the diversity one. I have no idea what's there to watch for any others especially that's full length.
Then again I did watch 23 "blocks" of the most full on rainbow available.
Checked some more: found a few that fit upcoming watches if I manage to squeeze them in.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Is 80 mins of Kurzgesagt good for German animation? There are literally no others that look adequate.

I guess? If you're looking for suggestions for German animation, Moon Man and Felidae are both worth watching.

watched Felidae in December. good to know there's still Die drei Räuber and Der Mondmann but they need to make a list first.

Actually there are quite a few LBGT anime: Fake, Banana Fish, Yuri on Ice, Fragtime, Citrus, Gravitation, Whispered Words, Wandering Son (maybe the only anime to openly feature trans people in a serious and dramatic way), Bloom into You, Kase-san and Morning Glories, Doukyusei, etc. Lots of them actually. On the non-anime front, Strange Frame: Love and Sax is an official one (on Certified Weird). Lots of other ones too. Batman: Bad Blood actually prominently features the gay character Kate Kane, Batwoman for instance.

I will grant you the Sand Animation is definitely tough though. Heck, I haven't gotten that one either. But I mean, that's why they're called challenges.

Bloom Into You is good. I started it yesterday. A lot of people consider it the best lesbian anime. It's usually the first anime that gets mentioned when people ask for lesbian recommendations.

If you want something where romance isn't the main focus of the story, but still a significant part of the story, Simoun is good (the main genres are fantasy/military). There are girls kissing girls in almost every episode. It also has a great classical-style soundtrack.

If you prefer a movie, Liz and the Blue Bird is good (made by the same director as Koe no Katachi). No kissing scenes, unfortunately, but it's still good.
Armoreska wrote: April 28th, 2021, 3:36 pm Is 80 mins of Kurzgesagt good for German animation? There are literally no others that look adequate.
Felidae would be my first suggestion, but you've already watched it. The Seven Ravens is another option, if you like fairy tales. It's not one of my favorites, but it's not bad.

You can watch Lu Over the Wall for the flash challenge.
It was animated in a hybrid form in which key frames were drawn on paper, but instead of the traditional clean-up and inbetweening still used in most Japanese traditional animation at the time, these rough key frames were then traced and inbetweened in Adobe Flash.[14]

127. Uribyeol Ilho-wa Eollukso a.k.a. Satellite Girl and Milk Cow (2014)
This Korean animated film is equal parts willfully quirky and cliche. On one hand, you have a bevy of strange characters like a magician turned into toilet paper, a girl that was a satelliting orbiting in space, a singer turned into a cow, a crazy guy trying to steal the cow's liver with a plunger... Lotta wtf here. But then the actual plot itself is a pretty straight-forward 'he doesn't know how much I care for him" kind of story. It isn't one of GKids' better acquisitions but it's odd enough that I wasn't bored with it either.

128. Starchaser: The Legend of Orin (1985)
Somehow I missed this mega '80s animated film. It's very much a product of its time when fantasy and sci-fi were big as well as rip offs of Star Wars. It's not very successful overall but does have some extremely weird or creepy moments. The flesh-harvesting cyborgs in particular struck me as something that'd be nightmare fuel to any kid in the '80s unfortunate enough to come across it on cable while looking for Muppet Babies or something.

129. Za kokupitto a.k.a. The Cockpit (1993) # BONUS Horrors of War
Based on a work from Leiji Matsumoto, this anthology OVA of three stories is pretty flagrantly Axis propaganda and may be an uncomfortable or obnoxious watch for those who actually know their history. The first story involves a German pilot who has to make a decision on whether to stop a German-piloted bomber planning to drop an A-bomb on an unsuspecting populace. This is probably the best of the three with a conflicted protagonist though its ultimate moral is pretty dubious (Germany would NEVER stoop to killing millions of people just to win a war!). The second and third stories are both even more shameless in how they glamorize the honor of kamikaze pilots and bombing runs.

16. 2.0* - On-Gaku: Our Sound [Ongaku] (1983) by Kenji Iwaisawa

Disappointing. Japan has a pretty sketchy track record when it comes to films about bands and pop/rock music, On-Gaku seems all to content to continue that trend. Apart from the differentiating art style and the dry comedy, it's really just a rather bland and by-the-numbers film with a horrible soundtrack. A group of high school delinquents is so bored, they decide to form a band. While rivaling gangs are trying to settle scores with them, the three boys get some instruments and without any formal training try to find a sound of their own. When they score a gig at a local festival, it becomes a race to perform. The crude and simplistic art style is what jumps out right away. It isn't very pretty to look at and the animation itself is quite poor, but there are some nice style variations throughout the film. The soundtrack is crummy, the comedy not at all that funny and the plot is of the cookie cutter variety. Many people seem to like this film, not sure what the deal with that is really. It's all very "been there, done that".

What in the actual ..
It's an Adult Swim show. If you watch it and don't like it, you probably weren't on the amount of drugs the creators were on when they made it.

130-133a. Human Crossing E1-13 (2003)
This was conceptually a fairly interesting anime. It is essentially an anthology composed of redemptive dramas, each one focused on a character who is forced to reckon with the poor choices they've made in life. A boxer deals with the tenuous relationship with his mother. A father gets too wrappe dup in his own sense of nostalgia to realize that he's repeating his father's mistakes with his own sun. And so on. While I appreciate this anime's existence as a series completely devoid of death and destruction, screaming shonen heroes, big-breasted harems, wacky shenanigans and other tropes that typically pop up in anime, the stories themselves are at times a little cloying and predictable. The final episode in fact feels like something out of a Lifetime movie. Still, it has a nicely muted animation style that suits the more realistic approach it takes to storytelling and does provide a nice niche that is served by very few other anime.

133c. Ginga no Uo Ursa Minor Blue (1998)
133d. Wasurenagumo a.k.a. Lil Spider Girl (2012)
Marulk's Everyday is a series of four shorts that were shown theatrically in Japan before the 3rd Made in Abyss movie and are basically little side stories featuring characters from the series. It's not necessary but still a nice little group of shorts.
Ursa Minor Blue is an imaginatively animated short from the director of Glassy Ocean and is well worth watching for those who like non-traditional, esoteric anime with a unique art style. Lil Spider Girl is a cute and surprisingly morbid OVA from Production I.G. with excellent animation. All of these were worth watching to some extent.

134. Hey Arnold! The Movie (2002)
Hey Arnold The Movie eschews some of the lower key character work that made for some of the best episodes of the series to instead focus on a bigger story about Arnold and friends trying to prevent a power-hungry land developer from bulldozing their neighborhood to build a mall. Regardless, it's still a fairly fun one to watch for fans of the series.

135a. The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury (2004) #BONUS: This Looks Familiar
135b. Blade Runner: Black Out 2022 (2017) #BONUS: This Looks Familiar
135c. The Mini-Munsters (1973) #BONUS: This Looks Familiar
Hey look! I managed to find not one but three shorts based on live action works. Chronicles of Riddick Dark Fury is pretty middle of the road story-wise but fans of Peter Cheung unique Egon Schiele-inspired animation style most famously showcased in Aeon Flux may still find it worth watching for the visuals alone. Blade Runner Black Out is a neat interstitial story that falls between the original Blade Runner and BR2049 and tells the story of a massive EMP blackout. Directed by Cowboy Bebop's Shinichiro Watanabe, it's worth a watch as Blade Runner of ephemera. Not sure if it would play as well if you have no familiarity with the movies though. The Mini-Munsters is, as it sounds, a TV special that turns the TV sitcom family The Munsters into goofy looking cartoon characters. Obnoxiously this was from that Hanna Barbera era where every cartoon was peppered with stale rejected Jack Benny-style jokes and had a wildly out of place laugh track. This one is pretty skippable unless you are just a hardcore fan of the Munsters.
