27. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000) (7,5/10)

Low expectations for this one since I'm sour on vampires and all the regarding aesthetics but DAMN, this thing is drawn so amazing. Really dark, often enough more surreal than fantastic/romantic imagery, a little more sci-fi dystopian influx than needed, still, wow. Plot lost my interest for the last half tbh, still giving it an 8 on IMDb to champion the quality of animation here.

1. Moana (2016)
I turned it off after about eight minutes when I realized it was a musical.

1. Barefoot Gen (1983)
If some of the particulars of the story here are just a little too perfectly designed to appeal to popular sensibilities (the protagonist couldn't be more adorable, or his family more loving, or his father more resolutely pacifist), it only moderately detracts from the emotional impact of the story. But I found myself more interested in the animation, which was quite expressionistic. At times, that was a benefit in conveying feeling. At other times, it led to some really awkward images that felt lazy and slapdash.

2. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
3. Princess Mononoke (1997)
4. Spirited Away (2001)
5. Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

My only previous experience with Miyazaki was Howl's Moving Castle, which I didn't like at all. After these four, I finally have a far greater understanding and appreciation of his work. There's a lot say about these movies, and beyond some of the obvious themes and the astonishingly beautiful animation, I think the depth and density of these movies is what strikes me. There's so much going on, such a catalogue of directorial decisions regarding story and character (innocence, flight, animism, gender, environmentalism, family, the hero's journey, etc etc etc). And when you consider that all of this is explored while accomplishing something so difficult to achieve on screen, a sense of wonder and enchantment, the scale of the achievement becomes understandable. But for all that, I can't say I love these movies like so many others do. With the exception perhaps of Mononoke, which reminds me of the fantasy novels I read as a young teen, there's something a little too precious and simplistic about them.

animation - it's not just for horny hentai lovers anymore

1. Ôkami kodomo no Ame to Yuki / Wolf Children (Mamoru Hosoda, 2012)
2-4. Yojôhan shinwa taikei / The Tatami Galaxy (Masaaki Yuasa, 2010)
(11-episode TV series, 259 minutes total)

5. Mulan (Tony Bancroft/Barry Cook, 1998)
6. La tortue rouge / The Red Turtle (Michael Dudok de Wit, 2016)
7. Gwen, le livre de sable / Gwen, the Book of Sand (Jean-François Laguionie, 1985)
8. Tekkon kinkurîto / Tekkonkinkreet (Michael Arias, 2006)
9. Over the Garden Wall (Nate Cash, 2014)
11x10 minute episodes, 110 minutes total

One of those films that I've seen pop up on various lists over the last few years, but being a Cartoon Network show - and with my general distrust in ratings or lists of American animation of the past 25 years or so - I never really gave it notice until reading something quite.. ecstatic might be the word... from a source I trusted (wish I could remember where, now, oh well, thanks anyway). So it went into the queue and, well, while I'm not willing to say it's the greatest thing since sliced bread or anything, it's pretty special. The animation is not extraordinary or anything - it is American TV after all and that rarely means top of the line - but it is more than serviceable and man how much TV work has improved over the decades. But in any case it's the narrative, a sort of melding of various fairy-tale and children's lit elements, with references to such diverse sources as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland and Betty Boop - but all done matter-of-factly, no calling attention to anything, no "see here, aren't we clever that we have the witch melt just like Margaret Hamilton did". No, it's an exquisite melding of children's fantasies and nightmares in a story - a series of brief adventures - of a couple of brothers and their adventures in a dark forest as they try to get home, helped (maybe) by a talking bluebird, hindered (maybe) by a woodcutter who might be a terrible Beast or might not be and... well, all kinds of stuff, really. The writing and dialogue are really what sets this apart from most contemporary American animation set in fantastic realms - it's matter-of-fact and up-to-date without being smarmy, full of contemporary in-jokes, or childish. And the voice acting by (among others) Elijah Wood and Collin Dean as the brothers, Melanie Lynskey as the bluebird, Christopher Lloyd as the woodsman, plus short roles for John Cleese, Tim Curry, and Shirley Jones, etc, etc - the voice acting is simply some of the best I've heard in a long time. It's really a quite wonderful, remarkable comic journey, marred only by a too-quick ending wrap-up that unfortunately takes a bit of the magic spell off things. Still quite wonderful and a prime example of how to do this kind of story, something I no longer count on seeing from Disney or anyone else in the American animation world. I guess I need to start checking out Adventure Time now.

10. Krysar / The Pied Piper of Hamelin (Jirí Barta, 1986)

Like Tekkon kinkurîto, this is a film most notable for it's absolutely amazing art direction - in this case it's wood-carving animation, something I don't think I've ever seen in a feature-length film. It ends up having the feel both of old woodblock prints - I'm thinking stuff from medieval Germany in particular - and German expressionist films, particularly Caligari

Image

and it's really something to look at; this is another of many films I've seen this month that I'd just kill to see on a much bigger screen than I have (and with an audience). The way the narrative begins, with the greedy townspeople slowly being overrun by rats, is pretty damn brilliant; the direction things go in after the pied piper comes is perhaps just a little muddled and not quite as interesting, so on the whole I can't quite say I loved it - but it is certainly memorable for the artwork alone.

11. Ma vie de Courgette / My Life as a Zucchini (Claude Barras, 2016)

Icare is a 9-year-old boy who is sent to an orphanage after his mother...well, after something happens with his mother, something we're not ever entirely sure of. His mother is deeply alcoholic and abusive, but when he loses her he insists on being called "Courgette", the name she seemed to give him in anger. Hmm. Some interesting psychological elements in this story of a young kid trying to fit in and trying to understand why adults sometimes go away or act badly, and it's all beauifully animated in old-fashioned stop-motion. It's another film I more or less ignored, until noticing that it was written by Céline Sciamma - one of several films she's written but didn't direct, and I liked the writing here quite a lot, though I think this is another film that suffers a bit from being too short and wrapping up just as we're getting to really know some of the secondary characters.

29. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (Takahata, 2013). Isao Takahata's last film and what a beauty! Again I instantly loved the water-color style of animation, loved all of the visual aspects, but the characters could do with a little more fleshing out (apparently this is an old Japanese folk tale). As swan songs go, this is a strong one.

For a film of its vintage, this is incredible to look at with breathtaking stop motion animation throughout; from realistic streams of water, to various characters moving and twitching while other characters talk, the amount of detail placed into the illusion of movement here is impressive. As a narrative, the film is somewhat less satisfying, basically consisting of prank after prank, though there is some interesting gullibility/rise to power stuff in the mix.

Quick whoring question: Pat Labor 2 and Beautiful Dreamer 2; recommended to watch the first part of either? Not going to even consider any OVA, series & manga for that, sorry :P

Patlabor 2 is perfect as a standalone film. You may miss some character familiarity, but that's about it.

Urusei Yatsura 2 - 8
Urusei Yatsura 1 - 7
OVA - 6
Urusei Yatsura series (for 6/9 seasons) - 5.5
and
Urusei Yatsura season 1 is ~5

so watching the series is definitely not recommended.

I liked Patlabor 2 the less of the 3 I watched.

As long as you know the basic premise of Urusei Yatsura, you should be able to understand the movie.

The premise: Aliens invade earth. To defend earth, Ataru (representing the humans) has to defeat Lum (the alien princess) in a game of tag. Ataru wins. Due to a misunderstanding, Lum thinks Ataru proposed to her, so she moves in with him.

Movie 1 is worth a watch, but movie 2 is better. I don't think the order is important.

6. The Plague Dogs (1982)
This movie is dour as hell, and probably the better for it. I can't imagine how many children back in 1983 waltzed into a theater expecting a happy animal cartoon and were scarred for life. I tend to think that anthropomorphism is a mistake, but in this case I think the intention might be less that the animals have human characteristics and more that their experiences represent human experiences. Interpreted a certain way, this movie is a minor existential masterpiece.

104-106. Usagi Drop (2011) E-11 + Specials
Rin, the little girl adopted by the protagonist in this movie, is damned adorable and in general this is one of the most naturally heart-warming series I've ever seen. It walks that delicate tightrope of being touching and sweet without falling into saccharin tropes. I also really liked its pastel almost-watercolor-esque animation style. Just all around a great series for anyone looking for anime without giant robots, death and destruction or over-sexed protagonists surrounded by busty women.

107. Cartoon Crazy 2 DVD [ Doggone Tired (1949), To Duck... or Not to Duck (1943), Inki and the Minah Bird (1943), It's a Greek Life (1936), The Wacky Wabbit (1942), The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg (1936), A Day at the Zoo (1939), The Wabbit Who Came to Supper (1942), The Early Worm Gets the Bird (1940), King for a Day (1940), Toonerville Trolley (1936), The Fifth-Column Mouse (1943) ]
Here we have a compilation of mostly older Fleisher cartoons. It was nice to check these out. Many of them I used to watch over and over as a kid and revisiting them was like revisiting an old friend.

108. Shaun the Sheep Season 5 + Shaun the Sheep Championsheeps E1-10 (2012-2016)
I've been watching Shaun the Sheep with my kids for the last few months, and this month we watched through part of season four and all of season five. Since I didn't remember where in season four we started, I'll just log season five. But yea, Shaun the Sheep is a cute series and while not as good as Wallace & Gromit, it's still an amusing show to watch in short doses.
Mr. No Legs
109. Gyakusatsu kikan a.k.a. Genocidal Organ (2017) #BONUS Geyser of Blood
This post-apocalyptic militaristic sci-fi is brutally violent in places (sometimes shockingly so like a certain scene where a significant supporting character gets a hole blown through their face in close-up...ouch) but has a fairly interesting story that unfortunately gets bogged down with a sluggish pace in the second act. If it had been edited better, I think it would've had the potential to be a very well-regarded sci-fi anime film. As-is, it still is pretty decent.

Image
110. Marco Polo Junior Versus the Red Dragon (1972) #BONUS Around the World: Australia
Apparently Australia's first animated feature, this film boasts some quite good animation for the time and while the plot isn't anything special, it was a decently entertaining watch. The tone felt a little uneven at times switching between grandiose adventure and wacky site gags like something out of a Hanna Barbera cartoon.

Image
111. RPG Metanoia (2010) #BONUS Around the World: Asia (Philippines)
This CG animated film from the Philippines (apparently the first fully CG film produced there) tells the story of a kid really into an MMO RPG called Metanoia who has to join with his friends to stop a virus in the game from threatening everything they hold dear. The animation is surprisingly good for a first effort (I mean, not great but it looks better than stuff like The Blue Elephant from Thailand) and the plot is pretty deep in places. Unfortunately here's another movie that just feels about 15 to 20 minutes too long with certain scenes that want to play as triumphant that just fall flat and other scenes that go on longer than needed. Still, it bodes well for other Filipino animated films.

Image
112. Beauty and Warrior (2002) #BONUS Around the World: Asia (Indonesia)
Oh Joseph Lai... You produce so much garbage... Unfortunately without Godfrey Ho's uniquely awful sensibilities, this animated feature released the same year as Ho's Ali Baba and the Gold Raiders just comes across poorly animated and dumb with dialogue that makes little sense and action scenes you'll wish would end as soon as they start. Joseph Lai, either try harder or try even less hard. Don't give me this middling crap that isn't even ironically entertaining.

Image
113. Tottoi a.k.a. Secret of the Seal (1992)
I have a super vague memory of maybe seeing this on TV as a kid. It didn't leave much of an impression on me then and it still doesn't really. It comes across pretty cliche and heavy-handed with its environmental message as well as its uninspired dialogue and plot. Meh.

Consisting of gouache paintings, this has some striking visuals with some very surreal moments, including a pillow fight across impossible distances with feathers turning into the moon, and a seemingly endless descent down a spiral staircase. The plot though is hardly straightforward and leaves more questions than answers; even when the characters talk about stuff falling from the sky and so forth, it is still not really clear what is going on.

The animation is absolutely exquisite here, with rainfall and moving lakes coming off especially well, plus lots of bright greenery and a great glistening effect involving a pair of high heels. As a narrative the film generally works too - or at least well as a 46-minute runtime can allow for. The bond between the pair is heartfelt and while everything wraps up abruptly with some very unresolved plot points regarding their relationship, the emotions shine through.

Don't forget me, I managed to finish the last remaining episode of the shorter series. Haven't watched anything else that's whole though.

25-33. 9pts of anime
-Akame ga Kill! (24eps) 7/10 - fairly typical battle anime about anti-monarchist revolutionaries, other than the main characters dont have plot armor and with more emphasis on left vs right than usual maybe. there's even a pacifist character.
-Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (12eps) 7/10 - long holdover. highest unseen on TDADT but that's NOT why Im watching. also on Seiun Awards list so it's one of the fantasy randoms on my meta sci-fi list but that's also not the reason. it showed up on the non-binary character list tho so then I finally added it to current watches, but it didn't really come up. didn't expect so much philosophical musing and other magibabble but i guess that's why it makes those lists. they even mentioned animals exploited on farms.

Directed by Jirí Trnka, the artist behind the amazing short film Ruka, this boasts some nifty animation effects as all of the toys interact with each other. A dreaming boy framing device does nothing for the film though and the project feels a bit padded out to feature length with not a lot of note occurring in Anderson's brief story. With such fantastic creations as a mechanical nightingale and such detailed toy characters, this is difficult to dismiss though.

34. The Lorax (2012, Chris Renaud, Kyle Balda): 6.2

35. Gake no ue no Ponyo [Ponyo] (2008, Hayao Miyazaki) rewatch: 6.5 > 7.8 - I already adored the animation the first time. This time I was strikken by how much the animation style with lots of bright primary colors and round shapes fits the content and mood of the movie. Rewatching it I also was better to accept and appreciate the movie for what is; a cute kid's adventure movie. The scene with the tidal wave is still surprisingly suspenseful..

36. Batman Ninja (2018, Junpei Mizusaki): 6.2 - This sure was a high- octane rollercoaster ride with almost non-stop action with cool looking animations. There is a lot of bat shit crazy stuff going on.; somehow this features a mecha-Joker made up of robot castles fighting a huge Batman made out of monkeys and bats. But after the zillionth fake out ending, it gets tiresome and it overstays its welcome even if it’s under 90 minutes.

37. Arlo the Alligator Boy (2021, Ryan Crego): 7.2

38. Kari-gurashi no Arietti [The Secret World of Arrietty] (2010, Hiromasa Yonebayashi) rewatch: 6.8 > 7.8

39. Kokuriko-zaka kara [From Up on Poppy Hill] (2011, Goro Miyazaki): 7.8 - Very nice, sweet teen romance story set against the social tensions in 1964. It's most reminiscent of Whisper of the Heart.

40. (7+22+22+24+8 runover minutes=83 min)

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Surviving a nuclear blast, an elderly British couple cope with the lingering effects of radioactive fallout in this downright chilling animated movie. In an interesting move, the film actually begins as a bit of comedy. After half an hour though, things turn very gloomy as the bomb hits in a spectacular sequence that blends all sorts of animation, and from them on it just gets grimmer and grimmer as the couple excuse the impacts of radiation on their health.

This also finally gaives me a Bronze on the OFCS list:
Image
Quite a feat, I think, consider that is -- and almost always has been -- my lowest ranked list after Most Checked. :whistling: Great film for the milestone too.

While none of the above films were great, there were several interesting ideas and techniques in most - with Le tableu (granted, Toy Story for paintings) being the most creative - but with the styles not matching to to the point that despite moments of extreme beauty, it felt rather cheap. Misteriya-Buff also blended animation styles, andsurreal live performances, into a fairly unique high energy film. WolfWalkers has everything you expect from Moore, if only a slightly more basic/child friendly story (moving a little closer to Disney) but still the best of the set - followed closely by Tales of the Night (which is Ocelot's follow up to Princes and Princesses - which in turn was a sequel to a show he did in the 80s). Same style, same basic idea, just more. Jurko had some great minimalist ideas, and firs in really well with the fun eastern block animated films of the period - only a little more basic. Soul is standard Pixar - with perfectly good characterisation and charm - while Magic Lighter is just trash.

I'm not sure how many episodes are set in Antarctica, but I guess it'll probably be at least 4.

I wonder if Traveller is travelling anywhere in the closing days.
Also did someone say commune???

34. The Prophet 6.5/10 not a fan of Liam Neeson's narration, or this philosophy. the poet is Lebanese-American.
35. Promare + 2 of its shorts (20 mins and I will need them) 6/10 hyper mecha anime. too hyper if you ask me. but wtf is that premise?
36. The Croods: A New Age 5.5/10
37. Vip Mio Fratello Superuomo (VIP My Brother Superman) 7/10 my final Bozzetto? other ones remain unsubbed. and wow its on the italian list. - critiquing consumerism from the right as well. however someone also made an ignorant comment disparaging animal rights.

(~45 more animated pts scheduled but some of them might fall out of April)
he or A. or Armo or any

May Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Something seems to be missing from your post, Armo! What are the sociological implications of The Croods 2? Don't tell me there are no underlying messages, willfully or not, on class, race, gender and human's impact on nature and other species. I don't buy it. :P

So many short animes for you, no miracle you're climbing up the leaderboard.
No one gets away by rating Dead Leaves a 6/10 without commenting on its animation style. Go ahead. Is it .. your thing?
