@ororama - I'll put you on 5pts for now; otherwise your individual country columns won't add up to a whole number, which would drive me batty

Another Egyptian comedy starring Ahmed Helmy. Attracted to a millionaire's young secretary, his scheme here initially seems like a ploy to woo her, but as the film progresses, he finds himself more interested in the rich man's business and in taking care of his daughter. Menna Arafa is excellent as the girl in question, feisty and playful throughout, often upstaging the goofy Helmy (which is not an easy task) and the film may have been better with more of this.

I'll straighten it out, however, this will require me to watch an Egyptian puppet series. That may not be as bad as  it sounds, since as far as I know the star of the series is the only puppet who has been accused of being a spy.

Convicted of rape and murder, the case against five men is dissected in this documentary that reveals their probable innocence and the flaws of the Israeli judicial system that allows all confessions as evidence, even those given under duress. Particularly potent is footage of the defendants recreating a crime that they likely never committed. Unfortunately with the judges and prosecutors refusing to appear in the film, the whole thing feels incredibly one-sided.

Learning that a boyfriend who she thought died is still alive, a woman sets out to track him down in this drama. The film is compromised by a flashback-heavy structure in which the present day and the past become indistinguishable (not in a good way). The plot has interesting elements as she is Jewish, her boyfriend is Christian and they both live in a majority Sunni Muslim country, but very little is made of this. We do get to see a lot of Damascus though.

Famous for being the first feature length film produced by the newly formed nation, the basic story has some interest as it involves Israel's War of Independence. The flashback structure though takes all immediacy out of the tale, while the flashbacks themselves vary in how engaging they are - the weakest of which involves a dull romance between a Christian man and a Jewish woman. The film certainly wraps up on a potent note though.

Detectives try to solve live-streamed murders here as their every suspect ends up becoming a victim. Little about the film works though outside of the idea. None of the performances are much good and the actor who plays the lead detective is especially stiff. The film does come with nice bits of neon in the crime scenes, but much of the film takes places in a single office where all the clues in the case are placed on a window (not enough wall space?).

As the first narrative feature to come out of Yemen, it is great seeing all of the ancient buildings and listening to the local women converse. Having a foreign photojournalist as the protagonist is a bizarre inclusion though and his on/off narration of the film does not feel right since the most interesting part of the film is a forbidden lust/romance and stolen dress - not his gradual realisation that oh wow different countries have different values.

Obsessed with an actress, a young man harasses her under the delusion that she loves him back in this film. While such a plot might make this sound like a thriller or downbeat drama, it is a comedy - an odd approach actually works. There is much kookiness at hand while the film begs the question of where the line is between pining for someone and insanity. The whole thing is surprisingly pleasant; sympathetic to but never once supportive of his stalking.

7. Foxtrot (2017) Israel
Foxtrot is a movie both simple and bewildering. It can best be described as a three-act tragedy, with each act unfolding asynchronously and in complete stylistic opposition to its predecessor. The first act is clinical and detached, the second phantasmagorical, and the third strangely warm and familial. There's a lot going on in this movie -- the details matter, from the acting choices to the set design to the very brief appearances of two thematically important animals, a camel and a dog. It's hard at times to say what it all adds up to, though a shipping container slowly sinking into a mudpit may provide the clearest metaphor for the filmmaker's outlook.

Three bumbling friends devise a bank robbery where nothing goes to plan in this goofy Egyptian comedy. The film has quite a few bright moments once the robbery finally gets underway with ridiculous masks, a surprisingly agile elderly security guard and really bad timing on behalf of the characters. The first two thirds of the film are not easy to endure though, full of lame gags from falling off chairs, urinating in pools, physical abuse and drunken shenanigans.

The first half of this anti-narrative movie is a mixed bag, full of randomness like cooking, a shopkeeper trying to stop figurines from falling over and an old man recounting a repetitive tale about life in Istanbul. There is the odd striking moment (an Arab woman desperately trying to rent a flat) but it is really only in the second half that the movie takes off as Elia Suleiman himself becomes a character and has to contend with almost comical police raids etc.

Just updated the OP.

Too much data is now coming in, so I'll just post an overall pie chart in these interim updates.

I'll post a full breakdown of 'Other' and a chart including Kurdistan at the end of the Challenge.

It is also my intention from now on to update the OP/pie chart once every 48-52 hours. Let's see how that goes.

Staging her own kidnapping to fleece her penny-pinching father, a woman enlists help by pretending to be handicapped in this Egyptian comedy starring Ahmed Helmy. In a role that requires him to scale trees, fall off buildings and wearing crazy outfits, Helmy is his usual solid self; his co-lead is less successful, but her stingy father is hilarious - declaring at one point that he won't pay more than 1750 EGP (around $145) to get his daughter back!

8. Rouh's Beauty (2014) * 98 min. Egypt
9. The Walls of the Moon (2015) * 98 min. Egypt

The first half of Rouh's Beauty is basically just repeated opportunities to look at Haifa Wehbe in tight dresses, ready to spill out on top (not a complaint, just an observation), while the second half is heated melodrama in which she (the only virtuous person in the neighborhood) is scorned as a slut by most of her hypocritical neighbors. I think it is intended as a critique of a macho culture in which women are ostracized for being victimized.

The Walls of the Moon was neo-noir (not immediately apparent because of the bright sun and characters who don't have to work for a living, but you have traumatic blindness, traumatic amnesia, a love triangle, etc.) with a twist that wasn't a big surprise, entertaining but nothing new.

Both movies are ending today on Netflix in the US, so I wanted to catch them while I had the chance.

Making a documentary about a Beethoven biopic being filmed, an aspiring director tries to sabotage things in between hatching a complex revenge plot in this comedy. There is a bit too much going on here. The best part of the film is Assi Dayan as the method actor hired to play Beethoven: a true Brando-like figure. He doesn't have a lot of screen time but his part was probably meant to be bigger since he passed away a few years before the film was released.

1. El Naser Salah el Dine / Saladin (Youssef Chahine, 1963) EGYPT

I watched this just before Easter as part of my usual holiday marathon, right after DeMille's 1937 The Crusades - not realizing they were essentially the same story, told from opposite perspectives. Pretty cool. You can go to the holiday thread to read a little more; in any case while The Crusades is a big-budget, largely studio-bound b/w epic very much of it's time, Chahine's film is... a big-budget, color, Cinemascope epic very much of it's time. Like the DeMille film there's a lot of time spent on a romance here, though in this case it doesn't involve the protagonist but his most loyal lieutenant, the Christian Arab Issa, who falls for a female crusader. This is a much longer film, at about 3 hours, and delves a bit more realistically into the political and moral questions of the time, i.e. can people of different religions coexist, and does a city like Jerusalem truly belong to one nation? It's got a lot of conventional military strategy scenes, battles scenes, etc, but towards the end it goes into an interesting, almost Brechtian avant-garde territory with a striking group of scenes, or maybe tableaus, showing Richard and Saladin side by side dealing with more or less the same issues (such as treachery in their own forces, doubts about God and their roles in the war, etc), and like DeMille's film - but more convincingly I think - it offers a resolution showing respect for Richard despite his being portrayed as rather barbaric at various earlier points in the film. All in all a pretty terrific film that I would put up as the equal of the best American religious-based epic of this period (Curtiz' The Egyptian from 1954). Chahine continues to impress me enormously as a filmmaker who could match Hollywood at it's own game in any genre he chose to work in.

2. Gemide / On Board (Serdar Akar, 1998) TURKEY

OK, my first "what the..." moment of the DTC challenge (and this one) this year. This has a rating of 8 on IMDb and just about universal acclaim (from what little I've bothered to look at). I guess it's a black comedy of sorts, about a small group of Turkish sailors - the captain, first mate, engineer and...not sure the job of the 4th guy - on a dredging ship that sails through the Bosphorus back and forth, and what happens when they all get really fucked up, go into town and kidnap (or save) a woman (maybe a hooker, probably a hooker) from a group of businessmen (or pimps), possibly killing one of them, and take her back to their ship where they are going to rape her, kill her, take her back, or something. Much of this plays as kind of a stoner comedy with the guys just sitting around a table and arguing, and much of it seems very nasty and misogynist - though I think perhaps it's supposed to be commenting on, or mocking this macho, aggressive male behavior, But for me it just didn't do anything and the fact that I'm not sure what the intent was didn't help. I can enjoy a film where I'm nor sure what the morality/ethical attitudes are, and I certainly can enjoy a lot of films that are tonally uneven or that shift dramatically, but I simply didn't get the point of this at all. It's nicely shot and I guess the performances are good, but... I missed something, or it just isn't my cup of Turkish coffee.

3. West Beyrouth (À l'abri les enfants) / West Beirut (Ziad Doueiri, 1998) LEBANON/France/Norway/Belgium

The Lebanese-born Doueri got his start in Hollywood, working in the camera department on several low-budget horror films before moving to something like the big time on most of Quentin Tarantino's early films; after gaining all this experience, he went back to his home country to make this somewhat autobiographical coming-of-age story set in 1975 as the country fell into civil war. I've known about this film for a long time because of Rosenbaum's enthusiastic review when it came out, but for whatever reason I missed it on initial release - at the time, living in Chicago, I tried to get to anything that JR gave **** or waxed rhapsodic over, it did - and still does - give me a better chance of finding something great than the words of anybody else. I don't know what I would have felt then, but seeing it now 23 years later - with quite a lot of films from the region, including a few from Lebanon and several addressing the many wars in the region over the past few decades, I can't say I find what he did in it. Yeah it's a pretty good coming of age piece, and I particularly liked the moments in the brothel, which serves as sort of an entryway both to the world of adulthood and to the land of myth and Arabian Nights and such - a place of fantasy and dreams. And I liked the way the young teenagers have to be "kids" when confronted by adults who may think they're spies or on the other side, but are always trying to be adults when they can. But the many anachronisms bothered me, and hurt the verisimilitude of the piece a bit and one the whole it just felt a bit too much like a lot of other wartime loss-of-innocence films. Good film overall but on one viewing at least, I don't see the greatness.

Ahmed Helmy does well as usual in the lead role here, though the film works better in its first half before spying and romance angles kick in. There is much amusement to be had in Helmy accidentally destroying his car while trying to stop a dog from sitting on the roof. Audiocassettes and finding the right key prove challenging obstacles too at times (see above). The romance stuff is half-baked though and he songs are second-rate. Most of the gags work though.

9. Kinder des Kalifats 7/10 - Syria, Lebanon, Qatar + Europe - Oscar nominee, yep no Rojava, actual Syria (via director too) - great footage of indoctrination in an ISIL family

10? Hunger Ward 8/10 would have given me the 40 minutes I needed and put Yemen on the map more concretely since it's filmed in Yemen and all actors are from Yemen, it may not count since it's "made by" peeps from US. Altho it should really count! Come on, Sol, +1 for Yemeni people suffering?

The good news: Yemen is already "on the map" thanks to both myself and Mario. As mentioned upthread, there's just too much data at the moment for me to update and post an 'Other' pie chart each time. I'll post an 'Other' pie chart at the end of the Challenge though. Yemen currently has 1.5pts between myself and Mario.

The not-so-good news: Hunger Ward doesn't count. If you really think it's a Yemeni film though, submit a correction to IMDb and I'll accept if you can get Yemen added as a Country of Production. I think that's fair. You're currently on 9 points in the meantime.

Oh, and if you're wondering, Mario has visited Oman too. :D
