2. West Beirut (Doueiri, 1998). Much better than my previous entry. This has actual acting and a directorial vision. The transition from comedy to serious drama is not as smooth as I'd perhaps like it, but it's still worth a watch. LEBANON.

Spoiler
1. The Visitor ("Za'er") (Al-Thawadi, 2004). BAHRAIN.
2. West Beirut (Doueiri, 1998). LEBANON.

What's another good Saudi other than Wadjda? Also what are the best UAE films?
Does this count? USA/UAE etc but set in Palestine, not UAE?
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1190858

19. The Return to Homs - Syria - more dead people, shelling and other action. it was too much fooling themselves with religion for me.
20. Pandora'nin kutusu (Pandora's Box) 5/10 - Turkey

I don't know if I have seen anything else from Saudi Arabia yet, but I have The Book of Sun marked as streaming on Netflix. Will probably save that for the Around the World Challenge.

The UAE film that I watched wasn't half-bad (Kalek Shanab). Again streaming on Netflix AU. Basically an Arab attempt at The Hangover but without as strong a mystery element. Depends on how goofy you like your comedies, I guess. It's very goofy. Netflix also has Uncle Naji in UAE, but again I'll probably save that in case I run out of countries to visit in the Around the World Challenge.

That's an interesting one. It's probably not the best example of a film to include in this challenge - American director, lots of US/Canada production companies attached, listed as a US/Canada/Kuwait(!) on Wikipedia, as Canada/US-only on Letterboxd etc.

That said, the film does have a UAE production company attached (Imagenation Abu Dhabi FZ) and it meets the minimum requirement of having a Middle Eastern nation listed as a production country... so I'll permit it. :) Would definitely prefer for participants to watch this rather than Men in Black 3 etc.

There is lots of fun to be had from the protagonists' deep-seeded superstitions here as signs and coincidences everywhere convince them that they are on a divine quest. There is also much amusement as they swindle, intimidate and cheat in the name of making others' wishes coming true, essentially using all of their mob training, but for the greater good for once. Not all of the humour works, but there is some hilarious pretending to be deaf stuff in the mix.

Sans force majeure, the last 3 days should be pretty good for film watching.
but Sol is safe, right? Not that I can't but I won't go 7x3, and I don't have that many movies. Can't upset the host so much anyway! Well, in a pinch I'll just tie him.

21. Film Kteer Kbeer 4.5/10 - Lebanon - drug smuggling with a twist
22. Lamma shoftak (When I Saw You) 6/10 - Palestine, Jordan, UAE - class war mentioned! communist motto said. directed by woman. and if you like counting, there's a character to identify with.
23. Al qods fee yom akhar (Jerusalem Another Day / Rana's Wedding) 5/10 - Palestine, UAE - Field Guide listed + another list - great if you like travelling thru old urban landscapes.

I'll take your word on that. ^_^ It would be pretty disappointing to lose the challenge during the last 48 hours when I have been at the head of the pack for the entire month <_< but I know that I can't control others' viewing habits. I have at least a couple more Middle Eastern films that I want to squeeze in, but I'm getting towards the tail-end of the stuff that is available to me and looks promising decent :ermm: so I don't know if I'll fit more than another two or three. And I'm not about to take time off work to watch more movies, though the thought does -- of course -- constantly cross my mind. tehe

Sol, you should really not put UAE in the main list when Iraq & Syria are missing! nevermind Kurdistan.
and Cyprus is probably also inflated due to shady companies being registered there (f.e. russian state mob) - most of the movies I checked out were Greece-related so that's a no!

Sol, I had 1 "full" movie watched for the undeclared column (well, just a docu bout Kurdistan, made by a Dutch) but I'm not registered in that column. might as well make use of that column, no?

24. Safar barlek 6/10 - Lebanon - old, color musical and eastern with a bit of escaping authorities. also great if you like snowy or rocky landscapes. looks about the same in this color. why is this not official? chained monkey seen.
useful camouflage
Image
25. Wajib (The Wedding Invitation) 4/10 - Palestine, UAE, Qatar - directed by woman
26. Alam laysa lana (A World Not Ours) 6/10 - Lebanon, UAE + Europe - docu about Palestinian(s) - actual animal killed but not for the film
27. Amreeka 5.5/10 - UAE, Kuwait, Jordan + NA - on the DIFF list so will have to do. couldn't find anything else to watch tagged UAE top. - anti-migration propaganda. falafel mentioned, for vegetarians. Alia Shawkat in supporting role. the boy could use some Schopenhauer, seems smart enough.

No - that's not what that column is for. If you reread the OP, it's for participants who list their viewings but forget to add country of production. Since users must include country of production for their viewings to count, the 'undeclared' column is a way of me recognising that they have contributed to the thread but not have participated in a manner that can allow them to score any points. You do not want anything in the Undeclared column. TRUST ME! ;)

Two strangers take advantage of a discounted travel deal for newlyweds here. It is an idea with some potential as they keep trying to dodge the itinerary set by the company sponsoring their stay while the pretend-husband becomes infatuated with a young blonde tourist who he ends has to then pretend is their maid. With Ahmed Helmy in the lead role though, this never maximises his goofy comedic talents, especially given he is called (but isn't) Clumsy.

Well yeah, as clearly outlined in the OP, I was just going by # of productions listed on IMDb.

Just updated the OP. With only around 48 hours left before it hits May everywhere in the world, this will be the last OP update before the final result.

Which means this is also the final pie chart before the final result:

Image

Please remember that the deadline to list your viewings 1:30pm GMT on Sunday May 2 -- at which point it will have been May everywhere in the world for more than a whole day. Don't miss the deadline!

This takes a while to warm up but really picks up once the four main characters finally intersect. The foursome have many madcap adventures as they are chased by bumbling cops and even more bumbling gangsters, meanwhile bonding and growing as individuals. While there is much hilarity in them sneaking out of a restaurant like soldiers wading through a jungle, there is even more to like in how the protagonist manages to find a welcoming surrogate family.

yeah I saw your check. That's why I excluded you.
Still better than a lot of other options from smaller countries.

It'll take me months to recover from these challenges. However my playlist of videos postponed bc of it is only 6 hours @ x2.
However 2 unknown videos disappeared by now. Bummer.

I prefer Kick Off, that was the best film I've seen from Iraq, and generally a highlight from the Middle East.

This comedy tries really hard to be quirky and different, from the older protagonist conversing with his deceased wife's photo, who often talks back, to the younger one squaring off with his precocious preteen nephew who seems downright dangerous. His girlfriend also gets caught in some of sort of time loop, perhaps, after he loses his necklace (what is going on his never clear). Despite all the quirks though, the basic story is never especially engaging.

The premise is okay but the plot here is too complex for its own good, darting randomly between a suicidal actor, the criminal who prevented his latest suicide attempt and other Turks out to get back at the criminal's gang, with the film never stopping for long enough to develop any real character arcs. This would be less a problem if the film was at least funny, but jokes are frequently side-lined for Drama with a capital D. The golf game is a nifty touch though.
