There is extended sequences of earlier works by the film-maker included in this documentary. These films-in-the-film are quite tedious and prevents me from canonizing it. The rest of the film is brilliant tough. The merging of autobiography & film history is skillfully done. Maybe he could have developed his theoretical/philosophical thoughts about cinema tough. The films is rich with stylistic flourishes, e.g. negative imagery and rapid kaleidoscopic montages, which certainly enhances the viewer experience. The film also oozes with playfulness and comedic touches; most famously the remark about how avant-garde film-making is created.

I have Film Portrait in my personal top 100, but if there is one negative I would raise against the film it would be the inclusion of the full length of his 12 minute La cartomancienne (which is a great short IMO - but not needed). Even though this did damage it and make it fall below greatness for you I'm really happy the rest still worked - and that quote is one of my favourites in cinema history. (l)

These silent films lacks inter-titles which creates difficulties in understanding (constructing) the narrative. The skillful editing and magnificent acting -- Nadia Sibirskaïa  -- however makes the viewing experience intelligible. These films are emotionally riveting and aesthetically engrossing. They can be categorized as French Impressionism. The subjective mental states are (thus) beautifully conveyed and proficiently merged with the stylistic devices. These films have a poetic/pastoral quality beyond such narrow utility tough.

1. Take Me Naked (1966)
Take Me Naked is the first film Roberta Findlay co-directed with her ex-husband Michael as well as starring in it. It is a very strange, obtuse, experimental film for most of its runtime. We hear a narrator reciting poetry that seems to be completely disconnected from what is occurring on-screen as a nude woman stretches in bed. The shots are almost entirely unconventional, fixating on aspects of the female form shrouded in shadow so out-of-context that at times it isn’t even clear what we are seeing. The narration seems to flow from man to women as if some obliquely metaphorical conversation is occurring we aren’t privy to the details of. In the last ten minutes, this sensual art film jarringly transitions into a very violent roughie as a man bursts into her room and begins beating and stabbing her to death. It left me feeling confused for so many reasons...

2. Blue Movie (1969)
Blue Movie was Warhol’s final film before retiring from filmmaking and was highly controversial on its release for its graphic depiction of sex on screen. The film is primarily a series of static shots of a couple (Warhol superstar Viva and actor Louis Waldon) as they joke around, wax philosophic about nothing in particular, have sex, watch TV, shower, and then have more sex in the bathtub. As a film, it’s pretty tedious but it does have the distinction of influencing a wave of adult films accepted by the mainstream in the ‘70s like Deep Throat and Behind the Green Door. As an additional note, the copy I saw was dubbed in German but I was able to use a combination of Google Translate’s transcript functionality and excerpts of the Blue Movie book published in 1971 that contained all the dialogue from the film to follow the flow of the conversation. Although it really doesn’t matter much. There is no narrative and no consistent themes. They make a lot of sexual innuendo type jokes and muse about the nature of love and past experiences. Like other improvised Warhol films, there’s little of true substance here.

3. Beauty #2 (1965)
Speaking of other improvised Warhol films, Beauty #2 is a 65-minute static shot of Edie Sedgwick and Gino Piserchio in their underwear on a bed answering questions at the prompt of Chuck Wein, only a voice off-screen. Wein’s questions seem to exist solely to annoy Edie and by the end of it, there’s really not much that has happened. In the words of Edie, ‘B-O-R-E-D. Bored...’

4b. Screen Test: Edie Sedgwick (1965)
4c. Blow Job (1963)
4d. Mario Banana I & II (1964)
4e. Screen Test: Ann Buchanan (1964)
4f. Screen Test: Nico (1966)
Here we have a group of Warhol’s shorts including some of his many, many Screen Tests that are just 4-minute shots of various people who came through The Factory as well as the infamous Blow Job mentioned in the intro and Mario Banana, two four-minute shots of the transvestite Mario Montez eating a banana. The one that is probably of the most interest is Outer and Inner Space wherein Edie talks to herself video a pre-recorded and superimposed television image that is then doubled, in classic Warhol style. It has echoes of Chelsea Girls produced the same year.

4. "Ici et Ailleurs" (1976)...political Godard. Not as unwatchable as some of his other films from the period. Officially 53 minutes.

"Sonne, Halt!" (1962)...a strange, jagged Austrian short that's essentially flashed scenes from a vacation in Italy? The subtitles seemed very rough and undercut my comprehension. I'm the ninth person to check it. Only 24 minutes, so it doesn't help my tally on its own.
"The Color of Love" (1994)...only 10 minutes long, so I'm still working toward a set of shorts counting as one entry. If I understand the scoring system correctly. Peggy Ahwesh takes an old, rotting stag-reel clip of a homely threesome in bed, and aggressively treats it with color splotches and the like. Astor Piazzolla's instantly identifiable brand of tango music is added as score. The result is somewhere between Brakhage and Bill Morrison. The version I saw had such terrible resolution that it significantly impeded my enjoyment.

"Threnody" (2004)...20 minutes. Nathaniel Dorsky. A meandering sequence of tight shots of various scenes, often involving flickering, wavering motion and mostly but not entirely set in nature. The film is 100% silent. I can't say that I really understand what Dorsky hopes to evoke.

I think this was my third viewing of this, first time in HD, and probably the first in almost a decade. A lyrical portrait of a town, fleeting images from the past and present. Also about birth, death, family, and the passing of time, invoking feelings of nostalgia.

I went through some of Robert Todd's early films, which was pretty gratifying. They're generally better than his later era stuff IMO. 'Trauma Victim' probably being my favorite of these.
Christian Lebrat is a new acquaintance. Pretty good stuff so far - some playing around with the field of vision, and some animated structural films.

What's your take on her? I don't know much about her, but I see her work available on Kanopy.

2. five shorts
Solstice (1971, 35 min)...Walter Ungerer...enigmatic nonsense in a forest :)
Il Caso Valdemar 1936 (12 min)...damn interesting horror short that's shockingly gory for its era
La maison tranquille 1901 (2 min)...Melies
Animation School Dropout 2015 (1 min)...utter trash
Paris s'en va 1981 (30 min) -- Rivette outtakes from Le Pont du Nord
3. Hands Up! 1981...interesting Skolimowski film where he repackages material from a 1967 project that the government shut down

"Sonata for Pen, Brush and Ruler" (1968)...fun 10-minute short involving handpainting a negative a la Len Lye or Norman McLaren. It's on YouTube. I'm the second person to check this -- I only stumbled upon it because I was looking at a random ICM list and it was the only included film without a runtime (now it has one). I guess I'm still 16 minutes shy of another 80-minute set of shorts.

5. "Three Crowns of a Sailor" 1983. Raúl Ruiz uniquely intimidates me for some reason. It's partly that I anticipate his films being "difficult," and partly that I'm afraid he'll really hook this Bunuel lover and that I'll suddenly be driven to track down Ruiz's entire catalog. Which would be a major project (wince).

I had really deliberated which Ruiz film to try next (all I had seen was "Hypothesis of a Stolen Painting" and a few shorts), looked up a bunch of IMDb reviews and decided "Three Crowns of a Sailor" was my best bet. Though "Mysteries of Lisbon" is in my Kanopy queue, and "Time Regained" is in my Amazon Prime queue. Turns out that I didn't particularly enjoy the film. The story was a bit meandering and uneventful, and I didn't even especially like the direction. The film had a 4:3 aspect ratio and was mostly people talking in medium shots, and it felt kinda "made for TV" to me as a result. At its best, it had a bit of a Guy Maddin flavor. Ruiz seems fascinated by the act of "storytelling," and much of the film depicted some character telling a story about what happened to him in the past. I'm guessing this motif turns up in some of his other films too.

I imported some missing films from IMDb that are directly/indirectly related to the films cited in this thread. Look at the above link, scroll down and you may find something new you can check. Including "De Occulta Philosophia," "Venus Delta," "Flipper," "Genesis," "Der Tod des Dr. Antonio durch die Renaissance der geistigen Gesellschaft," "Kureiji Rabu"....

You just described nearly every Ruiz film I've ever seen... :whistling:

Michael Snow examines language and the absurdity of using sound to communicate in this lengthy but always intriguing experimental film, from a narrator who struggles to pronounce the ridiculously long credits, to three office workers trying to work out if inanimate objects are talking based on sound direction, to subjects speaking gibberish wherein every few words sounds like actual words. The whole thing feels a tad unfocused but it really works.

12. Irène (2009, Alain Cavalier)

Image

In this personal essay, an aging Cavalier, opens the film next to the body of his mother - as his mind goes to the death of his first wife - and the diaries he kept. Shooting things big and small - but mostly small - we literally see him tumble and fall - with camera in hand - for then to show his injuries - camera still in hand as he looks at his old face in the mirror.

He wonders just how much of his thoughts his wife knew, and reflects on her sadness - their lives - his film - La chamade, with Catherine Deneuve - partially inspired by them (in it Deneuve has an affair, but this is never addressed). He remembers how his wife contributed dialogue - how a conversation was exactly theirs - as past and present lives on in memories. 7/10

13. Le Filmeur / Filmman (2005, Alain Cavalier)

Image

Alain Cavalier truly has film on his mind, even as his career in mainstream and even arthouse cinema dwindled he kept filming everyday life - yes, even after the support motor dies, leaving almost the entire film with a backdrop of the camera fan. And yes, it with this small, old amateur camera that Cavalier uses as a video diary for a decade (possibly more/less) giving us a clear, intimate picture of loves and fears.

Over this decade, we see his father weakened and die - for then his mother to deteriorate - we see his and his spouse's cancer scares, and operations. We see quick reflections on life and his journeys to festivals to show his films - but all usually composed of short shots simply establishing the mood - little spots of knowledge/context - while his moments of fear, love and mundanity gets full exposure. A great personal work, filled with humanity and soft humour in the face of life. 8/10

So far, I believe TWENTY-EIGHT films have been mentioned that don't have IMDb pages. Wow. Rock on.

(I guess someone really needs to beef up Robert Todd's IMDb presence.)

2a. Solstice (1971, 35 min)...Walter Ungerer...enigmatic nonsense in a forest :)
2b. Il Caso Valdemar 1936 (12 min)...damn interesting horror short that's shockingly gory for its era
2c. La maison tranquille 1901 (2 min)...Melies
2d. Animation School Dropout 2015 (1 min)...utter trash
2e. Paris s'en va 1981 (30 min) -- Rivette outtakes from Le Pont du Nord
3. Hands Up! 1981...interesting Skolimowski film where he repackages material from a 1967 project that the government shut down
4. "Ici et Ailleurs" (1976)...political Godard. Not as unwatchable as some of his other films from the period. Officially 53 minutes.
5. "Three Crowns of a Sailor" 1983.
6e. "Alaya" (Nathaniel Dorsky, 1987). Twenty-eight minutes, so this puts me over the 80-minute threshold for a second set of shorts. I guess what's most sensible is to just add up the lengths at the end of the month and divide by 80. "Alaya" is a sequence of gentle little nature scenes with sand, gravel, grass, etc. being rustled by wind and water. Sometimes landscapes, sometimes in miniature. The online version may not be optimal, because some parts were essentially "black screen" and I'm not sure they were intended to be.

-- Zwei Basiliken / Two Basilicas (Heinz Emigholz, 2018) 35 min, 7/10
Emigholz continues his series of films concerned with architecture. Here he documents two catherdrals, one in Copenhagen, Denmark, the other in Orvieto, Italy. I really like these films in general, but I wish this one would have been longer and looked at more buildings to lift this even further. It was still a good watch though, especially because I visited Orvieto in 2018, passing by and taking a few pictures of the cathedral.

My eyes sweep to an azure corner, my thoughts / Dream, absent, lost, undecided and forced / To go back to the past, for it is the exhalation / Of sentiments felt through a whole season / Which emerge for me with the power of seeing / Due to the suddenly heightened intensity / Of vivid and latent memories of a summer / Already dead, already far from me, quickly swept away. Lovely set of films there (again), jd! Noren was a real artist of light. I'd love to see more of his films. (l)

I think I have most of those Schroeter films lined up as well.

Lovely set of films there (again), jd! Noren was a real artist of light. I'd love to see more of his films. (l)

I think I have most of those Schroeter films lined up as well.
You're always a source of inspiration, insomnius, the Cures for Insomnius, one of my little bibles, and your last batch of screenshots, in particular, a savoring joy! (l)

Yeah, preservationinsanity. Not the ideal way to see it of course.

EDIT: Not up anymore I'm afraid.

7. "My 20th Century" (1989). The story needed more focus, but I really enjoyed this for the most part. Recommended to Guy Maddin fans. I think this is a popular film among the forum crowd, so I probably don't need to say more.
8. "Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania" (1972). Finally, my first Jonas Mekas feature. But it may be the last. Despite this being shorter than some of his other films, this was utter torture for me to get through. My ultimate film hell is a movie with steady narration, delivered by a voice with a hard-to-understand accent plus lo-fi sound that makes him/her even harder to understand.

Using clips from movies shot in San Francisco - and various fog effects - Guy Maddin and his Forbidden Room collaborators remake Vertigo here. With a constant brooding music score and some excellent choice cuts, Maddin and his team successfully capture the atmosphere of the 1958 classic throughout even when the actors on screen change and the found footage jumps between colour and black and white. Some cool screens-within-screen stuff too.

Week 2 Update

What an eventual last week.

We have a new number 1 on our leaderboard with Jdidaco jumping over Jeroeno, and building up an incredible lead. That sad, Jeroeno does lead the scoreboard when it comes to experimental shorts, and with a massive margin.

Coming in on 3rd place we see Lu-Chin shooting ahead of the rest of the pack, with Insonius following on 4th with another solid showing. The latter is also quite the sleeper with 67 uncounted shorts - and he is not the only one. PdA also has a nice set of 41 shorts that will affect the final tally.

As for our reviewers, yours truly and Sol are leading that sub challenge, with a welcome third place from Ebbywebby.

We only have 1 new comer this week - a big welcome to Flavo - who shoots in with a great set of 3 features, 6 shorts and 4 write-ups. Welcome!
