28. Nothing Personal (2009) - 7/10 NL
ICM
March Challenge: None
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

I don't know what I'd consider more evil, the character played by Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu or the goatee he was rocking for this movie. Phew, that thing was hideous.

While he looks a tad too old, Tad Hilgenbrink absolutely shines in the lead role here with the cool and collected way he handles all insults thrown in his direction. He has a couple of quirky fellow outsider friends too and his younger sister is even more quick-witted than him. Despite a well done heist, the second half of the film nevertheless disappoints, far too concerned about resolving the rifts between the protagonist and his father, neighbour etc.

Though not as bad as how I rated it on first viewing, the feminism was a little extreme. Then again, maybe I'll never be able to fully understand the feeling of this movie as a privileged white millenial male.

There is so much I still could see on the home stretch of this challenge!! I hope I can stay focused on the things I expect the best from, as I did the last two days, because in the end this is proving the most rewarding... even though I would like to dive in deeper into some actors (and some of my trash collection). At least I am saving most female directors until next month, that is one choice less to make... :) But yes, I am having a very good time at the moment (and I even biked another 40 km today, in a warm spring sun!).

Langer Licht hit home for me! Quite literally as I know all the places in the movie and spend large parts of my youth and beyond there. I also know these people, the way they speak, the way they live. Needles to say, even despite a few poetic flourishes, this one felt vEry authentic to me. Raymond Thiry is proving again he is one of the best actors around in the Netherlands.

170 Hz deserves a shout-out as it is one of the best looking, and sounding, movies made in the Netherlands. The director scored a Gouden Kalf with his next one, I really need to see that now. I love how most of the movie's runtime is devoted to the central couple, and it gets real intimate at times. My rating is only held back by the fact that the male lead plays a very angry/conflicted young man, but he stays that way throughout, there is no room for growth, escape or even to really explore the anger... hints are given, but everything stays more or less one note and in the end the drama just didn't entirely work for me...

With 06 I finally went back to more Theo van Gogh, and he again pleasantly surprised me! The source of the movie is clearly a play, but it works surprisingly well as a movie. Surprisingly, because the play/story consist only of a few telephone calls. 06 numbers, before they became the start of mobile phone numbers, were reserved for sex-chat numbers, so these phone calls are also very much centered around that. But this is clearly very much about lonely people desperately searching for a connection. Well acted, with a dark streak of humor underlying much of the sadness. And like I said, It also works very well on the cinematographic side.

Cha-Cha is pure cult, pure Dutch counter culture and rock and roll. With Lene Lovich and Nina Hagen offering some International support, but for the locals there are the (rebel) poets Deelder and Vinkenoog, the singer Shaffy and also Hans Dulfer is there with his band providing some amazing saxophone blues (like his daughter did in De Kassiere, also seen by me this month). The scenery (Amsterdam, Ruigoord) is cool, the music is cool, Nina Hagen is amazingly cute... this is fun from start to finish. Filmed by Frans Bromet!

Decided to make a modest contribution here afterall. Will try to add in a few more, though I am not sure if I'll be able to hit the big 10.

1. Lyrisch nitraat / Lyrical Nitrate (1991, Peter Delpeut) - Netherlands

This is a perfectly solid meditation of cinema by merging together elements of the remnants of a large library of nitrate film stock that has mostly been destroyed. However, to be honest I was a little underwhelmed here. Given the introduction stating how destroyed the negatives were, I was expecting to see new poetry and beauty created from this damage (there is an element of this towards the end) but the majority is using well-preserved stock - and playing many scenes out.

I like the added meta context, in seeing star after star - as if they were all in the same film - and then title after title - all framed against footage of spectators in a cinema - before we venture out into the world. It was also nice to see how scenes from what is clearly average melodramas to be given added gravitas and stand out in their next context. A perfectly pleasant exercise. 6/10

2. Hotel Monterey (1973, Chantal Akerman) - Belgium

A disappointment. I am a little mixed on Akerman's filmography, but this may be my least favourite from her. I simply did not think she managed to capture an atmosphere or impression about this hotel that told me anything or involved me. It is fairly well-shot, and a little melancholic, but that is the extent of what the long, adequate shots of rooms, halls, roofs, etc. gave me. 4/10.

3. Als twee druppels water / The Dark Room of Damocles / The Spitting Image (1963, Fons Rademakers) - Netherlands

The Spitting Image honestly feels like a proto-Verhoeven - a Fourth Man meets Man of Orange - as this double trouble, dark and kinky film - complete with a long cross-dressing section - starts spinning. Parts here are quite strong, though the lead character feels too thin - and while the idea of the reserved man suddenly letting lose in a power fantasy can be interesting to observe - it is really not played that well. Thrown into the resistance, our lead essentially feels liberated for the first time, which gives him the excuse to try to force himself on every woman he meets. He is either underwritten or under-stylized - though many of the notes work - and the existential/psychological angle does work - but only to an extent. The ending itself feels like a poor joke, and the film as a whole feels stylistically unsure of itself - even though it is beautifully shot and had so much potential. 6/10.

4. De dans van de reiger / The Dance of the Heron (1966, Fons Rademakers) - Netherlands

This film perfectly captures my worst suspicions about X, i.e. that he is a mediocre director lucky to work with great cinematographers. The way he works with the actors here is horrendous. It is meant to be a comedy - playing with the idea of romantic/sexual boredom in marriages. The shots are stunning, often steamy, but everything else, including general blocking, is really quite poor. It feels stale. There is little going on under the hood, and it essentially does nothing. The emphasis, even in the opening joke, is poorly delivered. It really just feels like a pretty mess - but without the added chaos/fun that can come from a pretty mess. 5/10.

5. De aanslag / The Assault (1986, Fons Rademakers) - Netherlands

The first 40 minutes are fantastic - with dark, moody cinematograph, capturing the dreary tale of loss of innocence during the last days of WW2. The child operformance is strong, and the undercut sense of terror is wonderfully done - but then we just to the 50s, and the visuals completely change - losing a lot of the atmosphere it had. The tone is completely different, and especially in the early sections of this aftermath it feels a little sloppy and without tension. Luckily it regains something of its former glory as it slowly starts to showcase the extent to which the events live on - though it never regains its early glory. 7/10.

1. Duelles (2018) - Belgium
A decent thriller that offers an exploration of grief as a destabilizing force.

Responsible for the first piece of artwork brought to the moon, a sculptor recounts how NASA long refused to allow him to take any credit in this Dutch documentary. The situation sounds fascinating enough, but it is never quite as crazy and outlandish as one might hope for in a stranger-than-fiction type documentary like this and the documentary presentation is pretty average. The sculptor's house, full of other works he has made, is pretty cool though.

Another great day, including my favorite so far, a very unknown movie by the criminally neglected Frans van de Staak called Schijnsel (if I would need to translate the title, I'd say "Shimmering") A lovely poetic, impressionistic and minimalist look at a relationship at its prime. It is both bad and good news that the DVD release comes with English hardsubs (bad for me, but good for those who do not speak the language and want to find this one...). The Frans van de Staak DVD releases are very small, almost private, releases (a true labour of love!!) and I guess they had to work with what they could get...

My fourth Delpeut movie this month.... I must conclude that I admire what he is trying to do, and the things he is interested in, but I am not thát enthusiastic about the end result of his movies... as if they cannot transcend the basic idea behind them or something... but it might just be me (I'm not the biggest fan of anything found footage related...)

I véry much enjoyed the comedies Rent-A-Friend and Cloaca, but still couldn't go for an 8 rating as the first one is a bit too flippant and the second one has its theatrical roots showing a bit too much for my taste (even if these roots are really good, there is an ensemble cast of some of the best theatrical actors around for instance, and on the cinematographic side this one is not to shabby either... but still)

Set in an unspecified country at an unspecified time, a dedicated manservant tries to train a young woman as a second wife for the Emperor in this strange Benelux drama. Several elements feel like ripe melodrama. Leticia Dolera is spunky as the second wife with neon red hair and red mascara that make her seem anything but majestic; she does not really have a lot to do though. The film is ostensibly about the manservant, but he's honestly a pretty dull guy.

Ooh interesting, I had not heard about this one before!
According to Imdb the movie is produced by all three Benelux countries! Director is Belgian, writer is Dutch... on MovieMeter most people regard it as a Belgian film.

Yeah, I can't even remember how exactly this ended up on my radar. Must have come across a list of NL or BE films streaming on Amazon Prime. The film sounds interesting enough but it really isn't worth it. :ermm:

Regarding country of production, I did some research myself and arrived at NL as the most logical label. From memory, the first-listed production companies are Dutch - one produced Verhoeven's Black Book, another produced all of Greenaway's Dutch co-productions or something like that. But yeah, it's definitely a BE/NL/LU co-production, regardless of how much each country put towards making the film.

Stuck in the same limbo-like afterlife as the stranger who killed him, an esteemed actor tries to work out his uncommunicative murderer's motives in this offbeat comedy-drama blend. There is much to like in how his killer taunts him by suggesting possible motives without ever revealing what was going through his mind. The film becomes a little ponderous in its midsection with a romantic fling, but the film offers a unique version of the afterlife for sure.

6. Toute une nuit / A Whole Night (1982, Chantal Akerman) - Belgium

Image

Toute une nuit is a mesmerising experience, linking together couples in houses and apartments across a city in a series of small, often wordless vignettes, that all take place during a whole night. People kiss, sleep, walk outside, meetup, breakup, dance, chase each other, look out at the world - and almost all of it is shot with so much shadow - truly embracing the night and creating a unique atmosphere. You walk through this world almost as a sleepwalker, as certain people reappear and segments echo each other to near perfection. Arguably Akerman's second best work (Jeanne Dielmann being no. 1 of course). 8/10.

7. Les années 80 / The Eighties (1983, Chantal Akerman) - Belgium

Image

The Eighties opens up brilliantly with a pitch-black screen - and a woman being asked to repeat the same line of dialogue over and over again. We cut to shoes. Walking. Detached from bodies. Boots go off, shoes go on. Then scene rehearsals - repetition, retakes, forgotten lines. Akerman has chosen to make the process of casting her musical, Golden Eighties, into an experimental film in itself - leading all the way into rehearsals. The first 3rd is genuinely brilliant, but then it starts to slip - repetition is not quite enough - a bit of tension is lacking. The shift to the rehearsals bring in more energy, but feels disjointed - and besides making me want to watch Golden Eighties (the songs seem great - though not this time) it feels like a shell of another movie. The film could clearly have been framed/angled a little better to maintain tension/mystique - but as it stands it is still a good effort. 6/10.

Today was "Kees Brusse day" :)

Earlier this month I saw him in Jenny, where he has only a supporting role, but is clearly the best actor in the film. And today he is again convincing as a film actor, where so many of the Dutch actors, even today, are coming from an overly theatrical style of acting. Kermis in de Regen, on top of that, is also his directing debut. A very well made crime movie. It has got a very welcome Dutch flavor to it (as in, it is not a pastiche of noir tropes that are too foreign to our country) but I think it holds up well against the average American or French crime pic from the decades before (if not to the best of them). Only thing against it is that it is maybe not "hip" enough for 1962, but after this he went on to make a documentary on youth, in 1968, so he still tried to be :) Maybe I'll squeeze in that one too...

Retour Madrid is an extra on the DVD of Dokter Pulder, it might be a fun recommendation for fans of Ajax. You see them preparing for a match against Real Madrid, and then playing the match and return... along with Haanstra's trademark smart observations and jokes. I dislike football so much, but even I had fun seeing a younger version of Johan Cruijff and Rinus Michels than I remember from my youth in the 80's and early 90's when I was forced to watch "Studio Sport" along with the family... :)

32. The Promise (1996) - 5/10 BE

The shorts are all related to Frans van de Staak as is the feature length documentary by Kees Hin. Huge thanks to EYE for providing me with an opportunity to watch "Bestemming" (the other shorts are found on the Frans van de Staak collection DVD's). They also have the other shorts directed by Hanneke Stark, but those were not available in a digital format and viewing on location is not possible at this time. The van de Staak touch and influence is clearly visible in this first work from her, but I also sensed a strong Margueritte Duras vibe (...maybe?). It is clearly an amazing work that I am kinda sad to only find out about by digging this deep into Dutch experimental cinema...

De Laatste dagen van het Atelier Frans van de Staak is made not long after Frans van de Staak passed away (by director Kees Hin). A lot of befriended directors, writers, actors and more visit the place where they worked (and in some cases lived) with van de Staak, remembering, still sensing his presence in all the details. Along the way Hin not only shows all the major works by van de Staak himself, but also some of other directors he produced or provided sound and editing equipment for. Heddy Honigmann tells of film screenings she organised with him there, when they were married. I also found out now that the English title of "Schijnsel", which I guessed would be "Shimmering", is actually "Glint". This feature again comes with English hardsubs on the dvd. sad side note: both Kees Hin and his daughter, editor Barbara Hin passed away in 2020.

Ben van Lieshout, director of De Verstekeling, is also featured in the Hin doc. He tells how his first work was compared to that of van de Staak by critics, after which they met and then they worked together on three van Lieshout films. Looking at the images in the docu I really wanted to see all of them immediately, but I only had de Verstekeling on dvd, which is also the only official home video release of his work I believe... It's a very nice co-production with Uzbekistan, filmed in both countries. There are some slight magic realist touches and the leads are very good. The male lead is the Uzbek Bekzod Mukhammadkarimov, and the female lead is Ariane Schluter who I've seen a few times now this month (another memorable performance of her was the female lead in 06)

I started the day with a 1936 double-bill

Rubber seems to only have survived in a shortened version. Story wise it still works, only a kind of rebellion of native workers seems to start without any clear provocation, at the very end. It is an interesting piece of colonialism captured on location and at the time it was still going on. The largely autobiographical book it was based on was highly controversial on release, but the adultery element was played down somewhat in the film version.

Jonge Harten is storywise very rudimentary and even clumsy at times, but the photography is very good and a large part of the runtime is devoted to just having fun and romance on the beach, making this one of these proto-slacker type movies like Menschen am Sonntag. I enjoyed that very much.

Shockingly I managed my set of 10, thanks to 3 films from André Delvaux. Sadly, none of them particularly stood out.

8. Un soir, un train One Night... a Train (1968) - Belgium

Made right in between The Man Who Had His Hair Cut Short and Rendez-vous à Bray, I have to say that One Night... a Train is shocking in how visually unimpressive it is. Reading up on the film it seems first and foremost intellectual, wishing to examine the issues of a country split into two people, two languages and set prejudices. However, it is lacklustre, and unimpressive in every way. Montand and Aimée are both acceptable, but this low-key surrealist film barely gets started. 5/10.

9. Een vrouw tussen hond en wolf / Woman in a Twilight Garden (1979) - Belgium

A fairly ordinary WW2 film about a woman falling for a resistance fighter while her husband is a way at war. Adequately done in every way, but nothing truly stands out. 5/10.

10. Belle (1973) - Belgium

An intellectual in a possibly failing marriage suddenly finds himself drawn to a mysterious woman, "Belle" in the wilderness - as his daily life, and speeches mix in with dreams and an equally dreamlike "romance". It is intriguing in obfuscating dream and reality - and as such plays better than One Night... a Train - but just barely. - though helped further by better (but still not striking) cinematography. 5.5-6/10.
