The framing device used here is strange and adds nothing, but what happens in between the bookends is excellent. While lengthy, this is nary a boring moment as Verhoeven captures the paranoia-fueled atmosphere of the times in which nobody is completely good or evil with hazy loyalties and hidden agendas. Carice van Houten is superb, facing betrayal and forced to fend for herself at various points and Sebastian Koch shines as a sympathetic Nazi.

Moving into her mother's childhood home, a young girl here finds another girl her age hiding in the basement who may or may not be a ghost. As the film progresses, dark secrets are revealed and all ambiguity about whether she is a ghost is quashed. Alas, this is a film that works better when the ambiguity is strong. Isabelle Stokkel is excellent as the young lead and the most effective scenes are the early ones of her wandering around her eerie home at night.

It's all about the Benelux, baby
1. Minoes (2001, Netherlands)
2. Mr. Nobody (2009, Belgium)
3. Man Bites Dog (1992, Belgium)
4. From the East (1993, Belgium)
5. 22 Mei (2010, Belgium)
6. Thorium, the Far Side of Nuclear Power (2016, Luxembourg)
7. The Forbidden Quest (1993, Netherlands) 7/10

I liked this one. Documentary-style narration of an ill-fated Antarctic voyage that edited together old silent film footage with a modern narration shot in B/W. Good tension and intrigue built up in the beginning, the story got more and more odd as it was slowly revealed. Pretty cool exercise in editing. I'd be interested in more stuff like this, as I find the concept of telling new stories from old films to be intriguing.

Also, first to complete the bonus challenges!

45. Jenny (1958) NL - 7.5
46. Diva Dolorosa (1999) NL - 7.5

1958 was a kind of turning point for Dutch cinema. Fanfare was entered at Cannes and became one of the most successful Dutch movies ever. Dorp aan de Rivier went to the Oscars and Berlin. And Jenny was the first Dutch feature in color. It is not remembered as well as these other two, but critics at the time did note the director tried to break away from the generally low standard of writing that they had collectively petitioned against the year before. The director took the job for his debut (from a German producer, remaking Acht Mädels im Boot (1932) in the Netherlands) in hope of being able to make something more personal and substantial later on (but that didn't work out and he turned (back) to television). He treated the story realistically/seriously (the pregnancy part), but was at the same time very aware of its lack of depth. Therefore he spends a lot of time getting 'the scenery'. The rowing club, Amsterdam, singer Corrie Brokken (who van Hemert had worked with on Eurovision before), they all look splendid. The movie also paints a nice picture of upper class living in the 50's in general. This is not something that is seen a lot in Dutch cinema I think. I enjoyed this very much

I also love the decadence of the fin de siecle, and the diva films of the Italian 1910's capture that dark romantic spirit perfectly. With Diva Dolorosa Delpeut gives a fitting homage to these pictures. With no real story to follow it does become almost just 70 minutes of ladies either vamp-ing or swooning, often in slow motion... so maybe a long sit if you're not really in this mood, but it might be the most focused of the three Delpeut movies I have now seen. Another one I really liked

And that's it for the weekend, have been watching a lot of other 50's stuff in between... including Monpti and Japanese scifi "blockbusters"

This Dutch drama circles around a couple who move from Holland to France where they are manipulated by builders and handymen working on their place. It is an idea with potential, but the thriller elements never take off due to the filmmakers trying to make things saucy and steamy as the housewife is seduced by the youngest worker. The 'cunning' scheme always feels real silly, and topped off with a nonsensical ending, this is a difficult film not to dislike.

Haha, so true. We watched this some time ago, here's what I wrote:

A clumsy and bland thriller. When a young family moves to a small town in France to start their life anew, it's easy enough to imagine the initial discomfort, especially since they don't speak the language very well. But then it turns out that the village is overrun by Dutch people and it's really just a predictable story about a poorly concealed con job. Performances are weak, with Haverkort in particular looking very uncomfortable and lost. The plot is too transparent, the attempts to add some sensuality are weak and the entire soundtrack is stuffed with Stromae songs, possibly because those are the only French-language songs known to the film's core audience. The only thing that jumps out is the ending. Not because the twist is so amazing, but because it makes so little sense. It also felt emotionally dishonest, which made me wonder what the director actually hoped to accomplish. Maybe the book made more sense, but this film really wasn't worth the hassle.

There was a lot to like about this film about a writer who has visions of terrible things happening. Some great shot construction at times, and some decent symbolism. But I just could not get into this at all. It felt to me like it was trying too hard, and I found myself rolling my eyes at times.

Oh yeah - totally forgot to mention that there is a ridiculous song/montage sequence towards the end of the film as she contemplates what to do. What a strange misfire of a movie.

I thought I might post a list of favorite Benelux movies I made a while back
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/icmp ... is/beavis/

With what I've seen so far, I don't think it will change much, although I'm saving up some 'best for last" options still!! :)
At the moment I am challenging myself with reading "de Avonden" (a major Dutch novel that I still haven't read) before watching the Gouden Kalf winning adaptation of it, I am already having slight withdrawal symptoms... ;)

With what I've seen so far, I don't think it will change much, although I'm saving up some 'best for last" options still!! :)

Please watch The Other Final (2003) (I see you haven't), my fav from the Netherlands.

Don't worry, it's one of those culture clash films - sports is just 'there'. And kudos to Matthijs De Jongh for originality and humor. :P

19. Crazy Love (1987) - 8/10 BE
ICM
March Challenge: None
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

While the remnants of a narrative can be deduced here, there is not much in the way of plot and as the film progresses any sense of reality is blurred. Are a dead man and a police inspector dead ringers, doppelgangers or one and the same person? While it is hard to work out what exactly the filmmakers were going for here, there is at least nary a boring moment to be had with so much weirdness going on. The film is very creatively shot too; lots of odd angles.

Quick note:

I decided not to do a pie chart/OP update today due to limited changes since yesterday. I'll post an update at around the usual time tomorrow though, especially now that Mario is getting into the swing of things. I'm sure he'll get another half-dozen Belgian films under his belt before tomorrow's update...
