Three different romances unfold at an island resort in this movie shot on-location at picturesque Roatán. The beauty of the island and its seaside vistas aside though, there is nothing of interest here. The film plays out like a soap opera for the most part with sentimental music and dull characters who are entirely defined by their relationships and their attempts at romantic flings on the island despite being in relationships and marriages themselves.

Andean? The Toy Story kid?
1. One Hundred Children Waiting for a Train (1988, Chile)
2. Natalia Valdebenito: El especial (2018, Chile)
3. Viaje (2015, Costa Rica)
4. Las marimbas del infierno (2010, Guatemala) 5/10

This was both bizarre and boring. A marimba player from Guatemala tries to start a heavy metal band. He has people working on it, but no one will book them. And it's partly about that, but also about weird drama in the group, and there's too much of nothing happening. There was a weird jumping on the bed scene. It felt largely random and confusing. But nice to see a small slice of life in Guatemala.

The grown children of refugees from El Salvador return to learn more about the political turmoil that caused their parents to flee in this documentary. It is a decent topic with some potent moments as they describe what it feels like to return and as they respond to certain exhibits and events that they attend. Trouble is, all of the young adults say almost the exact same things about everything they learn, which makes it hard to see or like them as individuals.

2. La Boca del Lobo (1988) Peru
A very undersized platoon garrisons a village in the Andean altiplano. It is in territory recently controlled by the Sendero Luminoso, and the soldiers' mission is counterinsurgency. It goes about as well as for them as you'd expect. The focus of the movie is not on the villagers or even the rebels, who are never even seen. Political ideology, ethnicity, and the urban/rural divide hover around the edges of the story but are rarely mentioned. Instead, the movie is an examination of the turmoil and disintegration of the platoon. As such, it is a bit predictable, but the emotional experience feels genuine.

This explores the plight and suffering of coffee growers in Central America where they toil hard only to get a few cents for every cup of coffee using their hand-picked beans. It is a decent subject with some alarming statistics, but the documentary presentation is average at best. Some of the interviews work well but much of the content is spoon-fed by a narrator who keeps repeating the same things again and again - and ultimately this feels like a lecture.

Gotta side with max on this one. The premise is unbelievably quirky yet the film drags even at an economical 74 minutes with lots of 'filler' shots of the band members sitting around and thinking (it really feels like a short film stretched out to feature length). The music varies in effectiveness too with the interactions of the three players being the high point of the film. They each have their own diverse eccentricities and bounce off each other quite well.

Hi folks! The OP has been updated once again. The top two still remain Lu-Chin and jeroeno but sol has been been steadily creeping up and shows potential to overtake jeroeno for 2nd! And on the bonus challenge side, the big news here is that Lu-Chin completes another run of the countries!

Now for some pie.

As usual, let me know if I goofed up anyone's score.

Yay on a purple sliver finally making it onto the pie chart. B) And I have no plans to overtake jero, though I still have four Colombian films that I want to squeeze in this month and I guess whatever else I find when the other Challenges this month aren't distracting me...

Facing eviction with nowhere to go, the residents of a dilapidated tenement building band together to continually delay things in this Colombian comedy. While the tone is generally lighthearted, the film still highlights the gravity of the situation. Fausto Cabrera is excellent as a wise old resident with a plan, never letting his emotions get the better of him and almost enjoying the cunning planning process. Everything culminates in a memorable finale too.

Peru's attempt at a found footage horror film, this is not much better or worse than the average North American film of that sort - but that is not saying much. Some of the jump scares are decent during the build-up before the horror really kicks in. Alas, the build-up last for 40 minutes and the paranormal investigator characters are pretty bland too. The special effects are okay for a film of this sort though, with a cool spontaneously combusting photograph.

The subjects (child marriage, child pregnancy) are interesting but the presentation here is a little all-over-the-place. The film is largely filtered through the privileged eyes of an anthropologist's son rather than the child bride herself. This leads to much tonal inconsistency, such as scenes of the boy happily chasing a turkey and then the turkey turning on him and comically chasing him. Eylin Esther Jimenez Gonzales is pretty great as the girl though at least.

Shot entirely with drones, this is an incredibly good-looking film, full of glorious birds-eye-view and high camera angles and with lots of swooping and gliding camera movements. Unfortunately, there is little to the film this novelty aside, and even at less than 70 minutes long it feels dragged out. The set-up is kind of promising with a disgraced police officer coming across a dead body in a van on the side of a deserted highway, but it is downhill from there.

8. SUR - Wan Pipel [One People] (1976) - 7.6

8. VEN - Pelo malo [Bad Hair] (2013) - 7.8
9. VEN - Azul y no tan rosa [My Straight Son] (2012) - 8.0

A good batch there, aside from the Guyanese film. I've fallen a bit behind, as I just couldn't finish the Colombian film I was watching last night. I've lined up four 1-hour films from the remaining countries in order to finish the cycle by the end of the month.
Spoiler
1. GUA - El silencio de Neto [The Silence of Neto] (1994) - 6.8
2. SLV - Los peces fuera del agua [Fish Out of Water] (1969) - 6.0

5. CRC - El hombre cuando es hombre [A Man, When He Is a Man] (1982) - 7.4

His photographer father killed during the US invasion of Panama in 1989, a boy is haunted by his memories as his father's ghost watches on here. Or something like that. The narrative at hand is hardly straightforward and the film assumes much prior knowledge of the incident, but even as someone not deeply familiar with the events, there is still much to like here. Particularly potent is the incorporation of actual footage of the invasion into the narrative.

 You're right. And I've looked at that map and list in the OP several times this month.

Oh well. Had those two films sitting around for a while now, and they're my first from each country, so not a total loss. :D

I'll edit my previous post. Thanks for pointing it out. :)

12. Olalla (Bolivia, 2015)
This was a weird one... Based on a Robert Louis Stevenson story, it's basically about Olalla, a woman in a family of vampires who get into some incestual S&M business intercut with Olalla's persecution in the 19th century. The tone is muted and strange. The movie seems to focus on extended whipping scenes both in the present day and past sections. At times it has a little bit of a vibe of a less experimental Jean Rollin. It's not wall-to-wall awful, but it certainly isn't great with a dire pacing and flat acting.

13. Tráiganme la Cabeza de la Mujer Metralleta a.k.a. Bring Me the Head of the Machine Gun Woman (Chile, 2012)
Visibly extremely low budget, this ode to the grindhouse films of the path is a fairly basic mindless shoot 'em up flick that doesn't take itself seriously at all. At times, it also feels like a video game, particularly in the action finale. It's barely over 70 minutes, so even though it isn't amazing, it doesn't take up much time.
