7. L'ange (1982) #262

Another shortish "animated" film with unusual visual (and aural) style. I'm not sure what to make of it.

Well, this was profoundly sad. All about homeless youths in Seattle and their struggle. It was a pretty accurate portrayal and sad to see, living in the area, what was going on. You felt for the kids and what they were going through. It was anger-inducing and a tear-jerker at the same time. Sad, wonderful, and an automatic addition to my list next year.
I agree. Dunno if you knew, but the director made a follow up movie 30 years later focusing on Tiny.

I have not seen it so can’t recommend it or anything, but deffo looks interesting.

57. Der freie Wille (2006, #446) - 8
58. Little Murders (1971, #323) - 7.5

An amazing final batch! I've seen so many special things this past month that I feel my rating becomes rather conservative (for my taste). I might end up giving el lugar, frei wille and little murders all a half point more if they keep lingering on in the mind like they already do!

Also tried another western. this one was a bit better as it did its best to present the viewer with some kind of ethical dilemma. Although the way westerns are formulated and staged, it never becomes anything real (it remains all surface stuff, unlike the surprise I had with Billy Budd earlier). At least it is also short, so there is no time for it to become dull.

And the worst film of the month was in here. From word of mouth among people with similar taste I had already gathered Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame might be bad, bud I had not expected it to be annoying too :) And this right on the back of a documentary I was thinking to challenge myself with (Wiseman style, court proceedings, about divorce, that cannot be something that speaks to me right? wrong!) what an excellent way to show Iranian people and culture like it really is. And what a great little courtroom they found too. Unlike in the Wiseman films I recently saw I found clear purpose here, excellent build up in the edit and just the right amount of voice-over explanation to get a grip on what was happening. Very good stuff, and another nice surprise coming from the challenge.

So this is it for me too, onward to the Benelux!

Hey I watched one movie that fits this challenge, and if it had to be one I'm not sure I could have done much better...

1. Nárcisz és Psyché (Gábor Bódy, 1980) #438

I saw Bódy's other immense masterwork, Kutya éji dala, 5 years ago and have been anticipating this one ever since. That was a pretty indescribable film about all kinds of things, a crazy sort of punk-out mixture of satire and fantasy and religion and...well, I should have written a review, and I should see it again. One of those films that you can't really keep in your mind because it's just so outside of normal experience - but that you never quite forget. And while this film starts out a bit more prosaically - apart from the overlapping multiple narrators, which gives you a clue as to some oddities right away - it ends up just as strange and indescribable, and at almost twice the length and covering at least 150 years of Hungarian history, it's one of the more memorable and odd epics that's ever been made. Essentially we have three characters, a sort of love triangle, that exists over several generations - time keeps moving on but the characters stay the same, without any explanation - representing I guess the theme of man's cruelty to man and the inability of a society to ever really progress. And a whole helluva lot more. The two male characters seem to be different aspects of Narcissus - with many of the implications of that name - while the female lead, Psyche, is really the dominant personality, but unable to dominate the world around her, always falling prey to illusion. I probably should have written about this immediately after seeing it, even after a few days it's hard to get a grasp, it's elusive stylistically with a surrealistic attitude towards time and narrative, and the characters are more types than real and yet verge on real pathos at times. I'll just say that this is exactly what I'm often looking for and rarely find in a film, something immediately astounding yet elusive and challenging long after it's over, that only gives you bits to understand readily, and calls out for more attention and effort - and yet remains entertaining and exciting for it's whole 4 1/2 hour run time. Certainly will be a contender for the best film I see this year.

As a group lets see if we can complete the list. I will keep track of what is watched, lets see how close we can get.
How close did we get? :ph43r:

Thanks for hosting. I really enjoyed getting into the 1000<400 list this month and managed to cruise into the top 100 users for the Official Gems list.

Once you have updated the OP, I will add the scores my spreadsheet and present the first Overall Challenge Leaderboard for 2021.

Well the results are in and Congratulations goes to tourdesb who gained the victory this challenge with 111 points.
A well deserved 2nd place goes to Lu-Chin who also managed to break triple figures, ending up on 100.

As to the bonus challenge, unfortunately we didn't quite make it to 50% of the list, with only 474 of the 1000 movies being watched.

Hope you all had a good challenge and don't forget to let me know if anything is wrong with the scores on the OP

Yeah, I kind of fell off in the last few days of the challenge as I became set on finishing the X-Men series during January. Not that I could have fitted 26 movies into the last three days, but I could have gotten us closer. Maybe next time. If there is a next time. *crosses fingers*

Thanks for the update. I'm too tired to fix up the spreadsheet now (and I still have one more movie I want to watch before bed) but to anyone reading, I'll get the Official Leaderboard up and running tomorrow morning my time.
