It is not only the complexity of the secret-keeping central romance here that is really dynamic here but also what the secrets are. The man has to deal with anxiety and post-traumatic stress before the term was even coined, with several great moments in which he talks to and tries to coach himself; the woman is also sympathetic as a victim of sexual assault and unwarranted advances more than seventy years before the #MeToo movement. Well done little film.

Well, this was profoundly sad. All about homeless youths in Seattle and their struggle. It was a pretty accurate portrayal and sad to see, living in the area, what was going on. You felt for the kids and what they were going through. It was anger-inducing and a tear-jerker at the same time. Sad, wonderful, and an automatic addition to my list next year.

My exploration of WW2 era cinema is distracting me a bit from the challenge (and thankfully It is also possible for me to go back to work, although still not fully, starting this week)... but, still another two to report! So, without any more ado.

La Perla was a bit of a disappointment for me. The cinematography is nice, with music and fireworks adding a lot of "color". But it is a pretty predictable morality tale on the one hand while filled with characters who all constantly make some pretty strange and/or stupid decisions along the way on the other. It didn't speak to me...

Krakatit is a very cool "cold war" thriller (maybe a bit early for that, but certainly prescient in that case) with very cool noir cinematography. The start is excellent and makes it clear we are dealing with an uncertain narrator. But even knowing that fact, I did found the conclusion not as great as it could have been, because of a few lacks in the logic... but hey, I guess that is an uncertain narrator for you. And reflecting on all this, I felt this was special enough to round my rating off upwardly to an 8

This certainly looks divine with some great surreal montage sequences and shadowy photography courtesy of Ernest Haller. The plot though is a mess and tonally inconsistent throughout; the film pretty much pivots back and forth between noir and a feel-good jazz movie for its first hour until things turn darker. The film does get better towards the end as it settles on the darker route, and the music is quite nice - especially the Oscar nominated title tune.

Less well-known than the Alastair Sim version of Scrooge, this has a great lead performance too, here from Reginald Owen. Also solid is Leo G. Carroll as his colleague's ghost with their initial encounter mixing awe, wonder, suspicion and fear very well. Clocking in at just over an hour though, this feels like a very rushed and extremely condensed take on the story, which results in Owen getting rather little screen time to show off just how much of a miser he is.

My last Naruse. This has been an amazing ride, starting with his silents in the 30s up to a movie in color in the 60s. A lot of great pictures in there, no real stinkers. This last one was a solid picture again, which definitely reminded me of Floating Clouds, but it never reached the same level unfortunately.

This has relatively little in the way of plot until the final twenty minutes. The turns that the film takes in its final stretch are quite arresting after Dumont lulls us into a false sense of security for so long - though whether the long and drawn out build-up to the action is worth it is questionable. Neither main character comes across as a three dimensional human being. The pair barely ever talk to each other, pretty much entirely defined by their sexual desires.

As per Ucho, this looks exquisite, shot in lush black and white and Jan Novák's music score is ironically lovely for a tale of desperation. That said, it is only after the unconscious soldier wakes up that the film gains momentum. The other soldier's attempts to befriend her are curious, oblivious to her animosity, but it is the way the wounded soldier provokes things that kicks the plot into gear, highlighting the language divides and placing a wedge in her plans.

Not the best film ever made, guys

but I liked it.

While hard to get into at first due to the randomness of it all (eating roses; inflating suits), a reveal around a third of the way in provides a fascinating structure as well as many philosophical conundrums and the second half here really takes off as the protagonist converses and plays chess with his younger self. The film is beautifully shot throughout with lots of supersaturated colours and some scenes are shot using (what seems to be) a rainbow coloured lens.

This is a stressful motion picture in the best possible way as the filmmakers present the near singular location as somewhere fraught with danger where any wrong step might mean another explosion. And yet, the most striking aspect here is not the imminent danger or the grisly explosions but rather the camaraderie between the young men who try to lift up each other's spirits and take great personal risk based on the uncertain possibility of saving a mate.

With Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin cast as the conductor and main hobo respectively, this is certainly well acted. The execution though is odd with the hobos coming across like rowdy teenagers evading the law; the whole thing at times feels like one long elaborate game, even a bit like Smokey and the Bandit. The Depression backdrop always stays in the background, making it hard to view the characters as men driven by desperation in desperate times.

Filmed in stark black-and-white, this boasts some great images; the music is also quite unusual, and while sometimes at odds to the images, it generally works. As a documentary experience, my interest waxed and waned though. The most intriguing part focuses on a man who knows much more about space and astronauts than one would expect from a farmer. There is also a touching part involving broken eggs. The rest of the film though wasn't really for me.

Travelling all over New York, this has a very interesting concept and there is certainly some initial amusement to be had in the diverse ways that everyone reacts to her (some pretending to ignore her; others angrily muttering under their breath, etc). Clocking in at nearly the same runtime as a standard feature film though, I unfortunately found this to be an exhausting experience. Fortunately, the music is at least great and creatively mixed together.

Busy day today with 6 movies. Most very good except the last one, Ramrod, reminding me why I don't like these ... (stupid mostly) ... Westerns
The standout here was Ladybug Ladybug which does a nice job of portraying fear, and then hitting it out of the park with a nice twist (kinda) at the end
Third Shadow and Lemonade Joe were also 4 stars for me, but just missing out on an 8 on the out of 10 scale (so a 7.8 actually, if you'd want to go into the decimals), very enjoyable, very stylish, story wise not entirely to my liking, but excellent overall.
