I haven't watched a single episode of "Nathan for You", but I assume that the regular show is meant to be funny and this spin-off is meant to be unusually serious. While I found it hard to get into things at first (unsure if Nathan was mocking or really keen on helping Bill), I become quite involved by halfway in as the search grew a bit more twisted - plus the whole Mud 2 madness! This ultimately came across to me though as more sentimental than anything else.
If you haven't seen Nathan For You, you're missing out on one of the most flat out hilarious TV shows of the last decade.

01. A Simple Life (2011, Ann Hui) - 4/5
02. Go, Go Second Time Virgin (1969, Koji Wakamatsu) - 5/5
03. Blood of the Condor (1969, Jorge Sanjines) - 4/5

Spoiler
1. Wife! Be Like a Rose! (1935, Mikio Naruse) 7.5 #982
2. Repast (1951, Mikio Naruse) 8 #127
3. Lightning (1952, Mikio Naruse) 8 #226
4. Mother (1952, Mikio Naruse) 8+ #288
5. Sound of the Mountain (1954, Mikio Naruse) 9 #30
6. Late Chrysanthemums (1954, Mikio Naruse) 8+ #547
7. Flowing (1956, Mikio Naruse) 8 #282

And another two by Mikio Naruse. If I'm honest, these films all feel very similar to me. I enjoy every single one up to now, but they don't really distinguish themselves. Some movies have got a little extra something (up to here, I've enjoyed Sound of the Mountain the most), but most of the time these are just solid, enjoyable movies.

This thriller focuses on a detective's attempts to foil an assassination of Abraham Lincoln on a train. Listening to the characters chat about Lincoln is enlightening; the film is set during his president-elect period with many worried about Lincoln's views on slavery and war. The thriller elements are clunkier and occasionally stretch credibility, though there is certainly something arresting about the protagonist coping when both his gun and identity are stolen.

Kirk Douglas and William Campbell have decent chemistry here and their mentoring scenes are well done, but the plot here is all-over-the-place, changing direction so often that it is hard to keep a grip. In the end, it is partially a surrogate brothers tale, part a romance, part a questioning of the place of women in society and mostly a look at land and whether wire fencing or open range is better. And the wire/open range issue really didn't engage me...

29. Sogobi (2002, #696) - 8.5
30. Scandal Sheet (1952, #78) - 7.5

I watched the entire California Trilogy by Benning today, only Sogobi (the third part) is on the 1000<400 list. The whole thing is solid, but the final piece was for me indeed the "best" part (most beautiful might be putting it better). I never find the right moment to sit down with a Benning in my home situation, so this is another case of this challenge making me push myself to finally explore what I (actually) like to explore ;)

The more story driven stuff was all solid to, but in an old skool 'heightened reality' sense, which is a tad too much like filmed theater for my taste (even if it is very well written and staged). The doc on the Married Couple was good, but I didn't like that they were so clearly performing for the camera (even though they were playing themselves and were trying to be as open and honest as possible).

This was described as visual poetry, and I think that's an apt description. Some very interesting images of people and animals interacting. And while it was nice to look at and experience, it didn't really move me beyond "neat".

10. As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty (2000) #10 3/10
I'm not a Mekas fan. This is my third of his this month, and it doesn't work for me. I don't even like watching my family's home movies where, I have to point out, they can hold a camera steady.

One of the more unusual takes on Lewis Carroll's classic tale, this British version is filmed in black and white and plays down the more cartoony elements of the story that Disney accentuated. The result is a film that feels more blurred between dream and reality than the average Alice adaptation; often camera angle and lenses do more to make the sets look otherworldly than anything else. Anne-Marie Mallik's blunter, less whiny take on Alice is very different too.

I've just had a small break to see Floating Clouds and When a Woman Ascends the Stairs which are not on the list, because of too many checks. Both of which I think were Naruse's best that I've seen up to now. I would say Yearning is certainly one of his best as well. A very moving picture, again with the lovely Hideko Takamine.

This semiautobiographical film from Kidlat Tahimik has some striking and at times uncomfortable images (circumcision) and some of his experiments with film form towards the end are neat. This is not a terribly easy movie to digest though with Tahimik constantly narrating everything shown; the film actually starts to feel a little impersonal as we are put in a space of always observing at a distance with a narrator/guide rather than experiencing things.

The set-up is certainly intriguing here but the film does not do a whole lot with it. Most of the movie consists of characters simply sitting around talking rather than doing anything amid nuclear fallout. The choice to shoot the whole thing in alternating sepia and blue hues soon grows tiresome too. Some of the ideas and several of the images (a flickering light globe transforming into the nuclear blast) are nifty, but this frequently feels too dialogue-heavy.

While this sometimes sways too much towards condemning the young protagonist for not trying to be more masculine, this is a pretty decent time capsule of outdated attitudes towards gender and "fitting in". The scenes between him and his father are particularly striking, with his old man visibly embarrassed by his son being called a "sister-boy". The film sometimes like a soap opera, but Minnelli tries to open things up and the rich, vibrant colours are dazzling.

Released while World War II was still waging, this prescient drama imagines a future in which the Allies have won and the Nazis are placed on trial for their war crimes. It is a curious set-up and the courtroom scenes are solid with an indignant Alexander Knox trying to brush off the war crime allegations against him; the vast majority of the movie though is dedicated to flashbacks as others testify against him, and the flashbacks vary quite a bit in effectiveness.

Well, this was profoundly sad. All about homeless youths in Seattle and their struggle. It was a pretty accurate portrayal and sad to see, living in the area, what was going on. You felt for the kids and what they were going through. It was anger-inducing and a tear-jerker at the same time. Sad, wonderful, and an automatic addition to my list next year.
