161. La puerta y la mujer del carnicero a.k.a. The Door and the Woman of the Butcher (1969)
This Mexican anthology film offers two segments with the second one taking up the majority of the film. The first segment is just straight up bizarre. At a dinner party, the guests discover that a random door in the house when opened reveals a long, dark tunnel with a large naked man drenched in shadow slowly lumbering toward them every time they open the door. Who is this? Why is he in there? How is this happening? The door becomes more of a metaphor by the end reminding me in tone of Bunuel's Exterminating Angel somewhat. The second story is quite different concerning a butcher and his wife who become embroiled in the events of the Mexican Revolution leading to a murder that haunts the butcher while the wife absconds with gold stolen in a robbery. This one gives off a vibe of a Mexican western crossed with an Edgar Allan Poe story, particularly The Tell-Tale Heart or The Black Cat and is definitely the meatier of the two plot-wise. The ending wasn't terribly satisfying but it was still fairly engaging on a basic entertainment level up until then.


162. Aliens Ate My Homework (2018)
Based on one of the popular Bruce Coville YA novels about kids getting mixed up with aliens, this one plays out about how you'd expect. It's fine as Saturday afternoon entertainment to distract the kids for a little while but isn't the kind of thing you'll get super invested in.


163. Red Riding Hood (1989)
Oh look. Cannon adapted the Little Red Riding Hood story as a live action musical. What could possibly go wrong? The results are about as creepy, weird and annoying as you would expect.


164. Francis a.k.a. Francis the Talking Mule (1950)

I have a vague memory of watching the first one of these a long time ago, and then I watched one of the later ones last year, but figured I'd just start back at the beginning and go through the DVD set I have to see how they faired. The first Francis movie takes place during WWII with much of the plot basically taken up with 2nd Lt. Peter having to explain the talking mule to his superiors over and over again after he's given useful intel again the enemy from Francis. It gets pretty tedious in a "here we go again" way that does not leave me super jazzed about the rest of the series. The second film at first seems to be a little different with Peter and Francis now back home after the war effort and getting involved in horse racing. Peter starts using Francis' info on the horses to place super accurate bets with gets the attention of all the wrong people. And of course this leads to the inevitable "where did you get your info" scenes that fall into the same repetitive tropes from the first movie. Eh, I don't think I'll bother with any more of these this month.


166. Gamera 2: Region shurai a.k.a. Assault of the Legion (1996)
The second of the '90s Gamera reboot finds Gamera pitted against a three-stage hivemind entity that has a terrific pacing for the most part, lots of kaiju action and even gives the humans more to do than just sit around looking at seismology charts and talking military strategy in conference rooms (although there is a little of that too). While the original Gamera films were generally known for being super cheesy and kid friendly, the '90s series is legitimately good and comparable to the better Godzilla movies from this time period.


167. Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return: The Christmas That Almost Wasn't (2017)
Ah, nothing to get in the Christmas spirit like watching Santa Claus get trapped in a real estate buyout. I thought the riffs in this one were some of the better ones from the new MST3K with the movie's premise of a nasty codger buying the North Pole to prevent Santa from gifting presents to kids because he just hates kids as one of the more ludicrous plots I've seen in a Christmas movie, up there with the likes of perennial MST3K favorites like Santa Claus (1959) and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Throw in some of the most tone-deaf, willfully terrible songs ever penned for a Christmas movie and a creepy ass butler, and you've got lots of gold for Jonah and the bots to mine.

In some ways this felt quite bad in that the budget limitations were so apparent, and the narrative becomes increasingly fragmented to convey Defoe's confusion and despair in a way that becomes tedious, but the central story stuck with me for a while, a haunting pessimism about a future where greed and lust are triumphant.

Solid virtual reality thriller. The twists are a bit obvious and there are key elements that make no sense, but it's well-made and the noir aesthetic of the virtual world is enjoyable.

25. Sword of the Valiant: The Legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Weeks, 1984)
Golan & Globus tried to cash in on the success of Excalibur with this adaptation of the eponymous Arthurian legend (as well as the story of Owain and the Lady of the Fountain). Remarkably inept in every way, particularly the fragmented plot, discordant synthesiser music, am-dram action scenes. What it does have in its favour are campy turns from Connery (covered in glitter wearing a green wig) and various other scene-stealing British actors. Some of the scenes are hilariously bad, but it does get bogged down in a castle infiltration adventure in the second half of the film.

26. Transformers: Age of Extinction (Bay, 2014)
Everything is bad here, the characters are obnoxious, the script another rehash of the same story and the special effects are a step down from the previous couple of films. And it's nearly three hours long. The best part about these Transformers films is going on Youtube afterwards to watch other people mock them. It's like a shared trauma.

27. The Dead Zone (Cronenberg, 1983) Rewatch
This feels more like a Stephen King adaptation than a Cronenberg one, as body horror is absent but King tropes are present and correct. It benefits from a chilly and bleak ambiance that is effective in conveying Johnny's isolation, and a brilliant performance from Walken. It feels like this one gets underrated a lot because it's not obviously flashy.

Genre cross-over can be sterile, like recent Palm Springs rehashing time loop and wedding rom-com without much flair, or enable some exciting and unexpected connections: Good Manners falls in the latter category with fantasy (nature of which I wont spoil) gradually taking over drama. None of the genres is dominating the other though and some subtle, visual or story elements, characteristic to each, keep diffusing through the whole film and make it a rich viewing experience. If Brazilian society's class struggle is working as the main subtext, there are many other themes explored and I can only recommend this modern tale to any world cinema lover.

This comes with some impressive special effects parts (most notably involving the Golden Gate Bridge) and the curious notion of medically 'curing' mutants, but too often it feels like a melodrama. The Scott/Jean/Logan love triangle gets an excess of screen time; same goes for Rogue's desire for human touch. The whole debate over whether to cure mutants or not is interesting, as well as the fighting that it leads to, but the stakes feel pretty low here.

Filling in the blanks in Wolverine's past that X2 brought up but never dealt with, this has an intriguing concept but a full film dedicated to his background is a bit much and the supporting characters end up stealing the spotlight. Not all are great, but Ryan Reynolds is so impressive with his quick wit and even quicker bullet deflection moves that it is easy to see why a separate spin-off franchise was given the green light for his character (not seen Deadpool yet).

I'm curious as to why you seem to be subjecting yourself to a bunch of mainstream trash that you clearly hate... Trying to finish the Box Office list or something?

Hate is a strong word, but they're definitely bad movies. Doesn't mean that I'm torturing myself, though. Some people seem to think that's the case, but despite the low ratings I'm quite enjoying this journey. And yeah, trying to finish the Box Office list. Been on it for a couple of years now, but this pandemic is a good reason to speed things up so that I can start with a clean slate once cinemas reopen. From there on, it's just going to be a matter of keeping up with the new big releases. Or maybe this whole pandemic is going to be the end of the Box Office list, who knows. Wish I had your pace, though; then I'd be done in a month.

36. Godzilla (1998, Roland Emmerich) (rewatch): ? > 5.5 - While it is a very mediocre blockbuster, it was not as horrible as its reputation makes it seems to be. Sure there is a lot lacking in the execution, it's has too many characters, its completely tone deaf in many moments and the building of suspense is absent, Pus a lot of ideas are tremendously stupid: most of all the eggs and baby-'zilla's whom only seem to be in the movie to cash-in on the raptors success from Jurassic Park. But the action scenes are exciting and spectacular, which is what counts most.

37. Jack the Giant Killer (1962, Nathan Juran): 7.2 - Loosely based on the eponymous fable this is about Jack who has to free a princess from a evil wizard. It doesn't pretend to be more than it is; a pure adventure-fantasy entertainment. It's the kind of movie that if you give yourself over to its charms and therefor suspense your disbelief there is a lot to enjoy, if you don't there is a lot to fault. Biggest problem is that Juran brought back the cast and crew of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, but forgot to bring back the most important contributor: Ray Harryhausen. The stop-motion effects are still competently done, but they and the creature design miss the real finesse of the master.

38. Godzilla (2014, Gareth Edwards): 6.8 - This newest American remake of Godzilla does a lot of things right, but doesn't succeed in everything. What it does do right is the building of suspense, the combination of human drama and grand scale destruction by given us a clear viewerproxy trough which we experience it all, and above all the action is spectacular. But it doesn't succeed completely cause the human character, that is our viewerproxy, still is shallow and the least interesting of all the characters (I found Cranstons and Watanabe characters much more intersting) plus the action at times is too dark to clearly see what's going on. I did also really like the franchise building aspect in this; the history of the kaiju's MUTOs, etc. and the fact that we immediately start this franchise with a Godzilla vs. other monsters fight instead of Godzilla rampaging through a (American) city.

168. Sungnyangpali sonyeoui jaerim a.k.a. Resurrection of the Little Match Girl (2002)
Playing out like a hybrid of The Matrix and Avalon, but not as good as either one, this film takes what sounds like an awful, depressing premise for a VR/AR video game (you must compete against others in a mass multiplayer environment to keep the little match girl from selling lighters or accepting help so she will die cold and alone like in the original story and you win if you are the last person she is thinking of when she dies...so basically a fucked up, keep-away dating sim) and turns it into a disjointed, messy riff on better films. Still there's something interesting about such a willfully strange movie.


169. Luna (2014)
Luna is renowned artist Dave McKean's follow-up Mirrormask and The Gospel of Us and finds his fascinating and haunting visual aesthetic alive and well here in a rather somber, depressing story of a couple struggling with the death of their child while visiting a friend at a cottage in the middle of nowhere. The sequences involving the couple are filmed in a very raw, natural way which work to make the all-too-brief fantasy sequences come across even more ethereal and striking. McKean's artwork is very unique and engaging and my biggest complaint with this film is that it saddles us with the very real emotional turmoil of reality while only giving us a taste of the child's metaphorical journey through an abstract fantasy realm. Still, it's a very interesting film. I feel like everything I've seen from McKean is close to being great but just not quite getting there. Maybe his next one will be the one that sticks.

You know you are probably in for a bad time when one of the first things that happens in the movie you're watching has Ringo Star playing a really stereotypical Mexican guy rape the sexually inexperienced lead character and have it played for laughs...


171. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009)
Well, it's not quite as awful as the Van Damme Street Fighter movie... That's probably the best thing I can say about it though. The casting is terrible. The dialogue is terrible. The fight choreography is bland. The effects look cheap. The story is nonsense.


172. Solarbabies (1986)
This was a weird one... It's a post-nuke movie that randomly throws elements of a Rollerball-like sport in the mix and a magical floating orb that's treated sort of like E.T. The whole this is a mess and it makes me wonder what Mel Brooks saw in the script that made him want to produce it...


173. Escape to Witch Mountain (1975)
A couple of kids with telekinetic powers meet up with a bitter, old codger while on the run from those who seek to exploit their abilities. The movie makes the odd choice of using the kids' powers fairly sparingly for a large chunk of the movie, having it play out more as a more straightforward adventure movie until the final act where the sci-fi elements ramp up a lot more. It's decent but fairly forgettable.

Arguably better than all of the other X-Men films before it, this entry is actually a prequel that fascinatingly chronicles the Professor, Magneto and Mystique during their childhood and young adult years. Especially interesting is the gradual shifts that we begin to notice in the latter two towards the veritable dark side with Michael Fassbender doing an especially good job handling his character's building anger and resentment. A little bloated but well crafted stuff.

Those aren't rewatches. X-Men and X2 were the only films in the franchise that I had seen before registering on iCM. It's been more fun than expected to work through the rest. Some very decent ideas, well crafted action scenes and eye-popping special effects in the mix.

And hopefully all of these extra checks will prevent me from losing my Bronze on the All-Time Box Office List for a while.

Even more compelling and tragic upon revision knowing everything to come, this sci-fi thriller plays out like Frank Henenlotter's Brain Damage crossed with a Cronenberg body horror film in the best possible way. It is enticing from start to finish and jumps between several genres and tones, including laugh-out-loud comedy, while always remaining cohesive. The saturated colours, neon lighting and newfangled are really cool. Same goes for the unusual music score.

Crack in the World (1965, Andrew Marton): 5.8 - Dana Andrews is a scientist who has discovered an endless energy source by tapping into the power of the earth’s core, to reach that core he decides, despite warning from his younger colleague to blast his way through the earth’s crust. Which of course backfires and results in... you can guess it... a fissure in the earth. This feels mostly like a cheap version of a 60s disaster movies. It isn't particular good, the plot and characters utterly predictable and clichéd, the effects are second-rate and there is plenty use of stock footage, but the cliched human drama is done adequate and the pace is sufficient enough to pass the time.

40. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019, Michael Dougherty): 7.5 -- I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked this. It suffers less from the shortcomings of its predecessor which I already liked too. While some of the action is still too dark, most of it is brighter and better to follow. That action is very spectacular and delivers on what you can expect from CGI monster clashing into each other. The human plot was also better, with better drawn and more interesting characters. Plus the human plot was well interwoven into the franchise building and kaiju action. Maybe it's is because I just come of my huge Godzilla bench, but most of all I just loved the many references to the old franchise, like calling Gidorah monster zero, and the incorporation of the classic Mothra and Godzilla themes into the score. This was just a highly enjoyable and successful blockbuster and it makes me actually exciting for this year's(? you never know with this pandemic) Godzilla vs. Kong.

I'm curious as to why you seem to be subjecting yourself to a bunch of mainstream trash that you clearly hate... Trying to finish the Box Office list or something?

Hate is a strong word, but they're definitely bad movies. Doesn't mean that I'm torturing myself, though. Some people seem to think that's the case, but despite the low ratings I'm quite enjoying this journey. And yeah, trying to finish the Box Office list. Been on it for a couple of years now, but this pandemic is a good reason to speed things up so that I can start with a clean slate once cinemas reopen. From there on, it's just going to be a matter of keeping up with the new big releases. Or maybe this whole pandemic is going to be the end of the Box Office list, who knows. Wish I had your pace, though; then I'd be done in a month.

I'm pretty sure if you watched the entire Box Office list in a month, you'd go into some kind of glossy, overproduced state of shock. Honestly, for me the big blockbusters usually aren't too painful. It's the garbage romantic comedies and terrible kids movies that do me in on that list.

Man, I've really gotta stop buying $1 movies at the Dollar Tree just because they're there. <Looks over at stack of movies bought there 2 days ago>. This bottom-of-the-barrel body swap "comedy" is about as generic and predictable as it possibly gets. About the only thing that stands out (and not necessarily in a good way) is a scene where the chauvinist asshole, who has been turned into a woman by a random witch on the street, has his/her first period and the blood is just everywhere. Like, just a ludicrous amount all over the walls, shower curtain... And then the movie plays it for laughs by leaving a bloody handprint on her cheek for the entire next scene. I honestly don't understand how movies like this even exist.


176. Kei moon duen gap a.k.a. The Miracle Fighters (1982)
I'm usually all about crazy, magical kung fu movies like Boxer's Omen and Taoism Drunkard. This one though is almost too silly for its own good at times. Despite that, it still has some fun stuff in the mix and some solid fight scenes.

So those spacy kids with psychic powers are back as teens in this sequel that finds the boy Tony getting kidnapped by mad scientist Christopher Lee who wants to harness his powers to take over the world (of course) and his sister Tia and her friends have to go rescue him. Despite the bigger budget, weightier acting credits like Lee and Bette Davis and a heavily usage of special effects in the plot, Return just feels uninspired and cheesier than the original, like it feels like a cash-in.


178. The Space Between Us (2017)
I had put this one off because the marketing materials made it look like some teen romance with a sci-fi twist. For the first half of the movie, I was actually pleasantly surprised to find that it really didn't focus much on this aspect, instead telling the story of the first kid to be born on Mars and his journey back to Earth and how his situation has led him to a very specific kind of alienation that only he could understand. But then the crux of the plot kicks in with him meeting up with a (very) long distance pen pal, a girl from Colorado, who goes on the run with him on his search to find his father. The back half of the movie turns into the overly sentimental romance that the trailer alluded to and drags down the momentum of the movie quite a bit.


179. Fateful Findings (2014)
Gee golly. Ain't this just the Breeniest!? Neil Breen returns, once again putting himself at the center of the universe as a Christ-like figure arisen from the dead after being hit pretty damn hard by a car and who is also a master hacker who has uncovered government and corporate secrets from AROUND THE WORLD. Also he has a magic stone that he found as a kid in a magic mushroom with his best friend, a girl who moves away never to be seen again (until she shows up later in the movie) at the end of that summer. Also every woman in the movie wants to sleep with him including his best friend's teenage daughter. Also his wife overdoses on pills conveniently right as he reconnects with his friend from long ago. Also he has two therapists, one of which might be a ghost. Also he can walk through walls and heal shockingly fast. Also he has a master's degree in computer science but is stuck writing... NOVELS, which of course he is very successful at. As one can imagine, this was pretty amazing.


180. O-bi, O-ba - Koniec cywilizacji a.k.a. O-Bi, O-Ba - The End of Civilization (1985)
Very good Eastern Bloc sci-fi positing a dystopian future where people live underground, suffering and ragged, while waiting with mindless hope of a great Ark to arrive and take them away from it all. The cinematography is quite good, bathing everything in a dreary blue hue yet still creating very striking compositions and the camerawork is hypnotic, always swirling around as if looking for something that isn't there much like the protagonist. At times, it does feel like it could've been a tightened up a little but still, it's one I would certainly recommend for fans of Soviet sci-fi.
