What's the verdict on films where it's live action but features one or more lead animated characters like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Smurfs movies or the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie? Would these kind of things count or not? I know Stuart Little would since it's actually on one of the animated lists but otherwise not sure.

The title character looks great, and some of the backgrounds are gorgeous, but the character design for the kids (and most of the animals) here is very simplistic. It is also a bit hard to root for the young protagonist; while determined, she whines the whole way through and constantly converses in a woe-is-me manner. Some of the scarier parts of the film are not half-bad though - especially a bit where she is captured by a child-eating witch.

Roger Rabbit certainly counts, as do Space Jam and Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and any other similar films where cartoon characters interact with real actors.

I haven't seen the other films you're asking about. Smurfs (2011) and Lost Village are tagged as animation on IMDb, so they count. Not sure about Sonic and Stuart. What do others think?

Which animated list(s) include Stuart Little?

I find Co Hoedeman's (Matrioska, The Owl and the Lemming: An Eskimo Legend, Tchou-tchou, The Owl and the Raven: An Eskimo Legend, The Sand Castle) and George Dunning's (Damon the Mower) cartoons almost always boring, with the exception of a few segments of Yellow Submarine, although Hoedeman is at least technically proficient. Terrytoons (The Bird Tower,) are not in the same league as Looney Tunes, but are usually good to very good, based on this small sample. Tom and Jerry are always funny (Springtime for Thomas, The Milky Waif), even if they seldom reach the level of Looney Tunes. Hen, His Wife was ugly, weird and interesting. Vive la rose was a perfect combination of a real lake and cabin in Newfoundland, hand-drawn and stop motion animation and a French Canadian folk song.
Animal Behaviour and Uncle Bob's Hospital Visit were what I expect from National Film Board of Canada animation-beautiful or more likely cute and rough drawing and a message, sometimes serious and sometimes goofy. The Spine and Drux Flux are a new strain in NFB animation, weird, somewhat abstract and oblique. I guess I understand Don Hertzfeldt's (Billy's Balloon, Rejected) popularity, but after watching these two shorts, it seems overblown to me.

Why did I put off watching The Boxtrolls for so long?

Rio was the sort of movie that we took our kids to every month or so during summer when they were young-pretty, funny and lightweight.

Duckman, season 3

Mid-90s "Simpsons wannabe" (to quote the show itself), starring Jason Alexander, of Seinfeld fame, as the titular private dick/family man. A lot of episodes are pop culture parodies, like the first episode here, which is even done in black-and-white.

09. 3.0* - Lupin III: The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure [Rupan Sansei: Harimao no Zaiho Wo Ee!!] by Osamu Dezaki (1995)

A Lupin III film by Osamu Dezaki, not a director I'd immediately consider for the Lupin franchise. Then again, this series has always attracted odd and atypical directors (remember Miyazaki, Suzuki, Koike), so it's not that big of a surprise. Don't expect a typical Dezaki film though, this is just another Lupin episode. The Lupin films all follow a very similar setup. Lupin is chasing yet another high-profile treasure, working with and against the usual crew of familiars, plus a couple of random bad guys. It's a weird and animated bunch who all get entangled in a complicated quest to find the treasure. The film holds a perfect balance between adventure, action and oddball comedy. It's a shame that once again the animation is quite poor. Monkey Punch's style doesn't really demand complex detail, but it would benefit from more intricate animation (as Miyazaki and Koike proved). Still, good fun, much like most other films in the series.

Oh my bad. I got Stuart Little mixed up with something else I guess. It's the same kind of movie as The Smurfs (2011) though with live action actors and backgrounds with a lead animated character.

Pretty predictable and forgettable direct-to-video Lion King spin-off.

Image
115-118a. Nihon Chinbotsu 2020 a.k.a. Japan Sinks 2020 (2020)
This latest series from Masaaki Yuasa starts strong with catastrophic consequences and a willingness to kill off characters even when they've been developed which gives it more of a sense of urgency and suspense. It isn't as strong as it could be though because it starts to fall into a pattern of more and more ridiculous situations with multiple deus ex machina solutions. The animation is also a little inconsistent in some places which is particularly unfortunate given Yuasa has shown us some of the more unique and beautiful visuals in anime in recent years in other series and films.

Image
118b. Itadaki! Seieki a.k.a. Vampire Vixen (2014)
Here we have a short hentai OVA with some actual charm to it. The lead succubus/vampire character is actually pretty likable and cute for this kind of character and it does actually develop a little bit of a real relationship between the two leads (although not much given it's only 24 min. long).

Image
118c. Ekusu doraibâ: Nina ando rei denjâ zôn a.k.a. Ex-Driver: Nina and Rei Danger Zone (2002)
I actually liked this one a little more than the movie or original series. I had mentioned in the review of the movie that Ex-Driver gives off vibes of Gunsmith Cats and You're Under Arrest. This OVA prequel draws that line even more clearly with the action element played up much more than the racing.

Image
119. Gokiburi-tachi no tasogare a.k.a. Twilight of the Cockroaches (1989)
This was a weird one... Live action backgrounds with a couple of real humans mixed with hordes of animated anthropomorphic cockroach people who have developed their own utopian society in a disgusting bachelor pad where the owner allows them to run free amidst the filt of his apartment. He eventually has a lady friend over and the roaches' easy living is thrown into chaos, in particular a pair of lovers caught in the middle. For such a bizarre, kind of silly premise, it's a surprisingly bleak, methodically paced film. I honestly am not sure I would say this is actively great as it definitely has some pacing problems, but fans of atypical animation should certainly check it out.

Image
120. Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery (2014)
This and the follow-up Curse of the Speed Demon have to be some of the worst examples of corporate synergy I have come across. The opening scene of Scooby and Shaggy getting super hyped over a WWE video game with Shaggy quoting John Cena and Scooby doing DDR-esque dance moves is some cringy shit. And the rest of the movie doesn't get much better. The mystery was uninteresting and Velma getting super jazzed about watching a wrestling match was just stupid. Also as you can guess from the picture above, there's also a random cameo from Young Justice that makes no sense. This is just bad all around.

Block O' shorts time. Out of this bunch, Flatlife was definitely a standout in terms of being genuinely funny. I also though the Vanderbeek and Richter shorts were pretty interesting stylistically.

Now I almost completed the Disney canon I decided to rewatch those I haven't seen since I was a kid.

26. Peter Pan (1953, Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson & Hamilton Luske) (rewatch): ? > 7.5 - Captain Hook is rightfully one of the great classic villains. The movie is a ode to the adventurous spirit of childhood, when you could go on big adventure using your imagination. It's a bit weird only how much adored Peter Pan is by every female character.

27. A Goofy Movie (1995, Kevin Lima): 6.5 - A movie based on the 90s tv-serie about Goofy and his son (of which I mostly remember the Dutch theme song). While Max, the son, has just made a date with his new love, Goofy drags him away on a father-son bonding fishing trip. While the whole opposing figures come together on a road trip plot is very standard, the central father son conflict is handled surprisingly well for an animated movie about Goofy with the movie taking into account arguments for both sides. It makes this also very watchable as an adult. Of course during their trip to get in different shenanigans, including fleeing from Big Foot and a dangerous canyon ride, which results in them coming together.

28. An Extremely Goofy Movie (2000, Douglas McCarthy): 6.5 - In this sequel Max is off to college, and Goofy after loosing his job and having to get his degree joins him there. Meanwhile Max wants to make a great new start at college by winning the college extreme sport games. If one accepts this is based on a tv-series, so it's completely normal characters forgot all lessons from the previous movie, this a pretty decent sequel. It also has a nice subplot about Goofy falling in love, something I thought I never would have seen happen. The college setting (probably) does make it less appealing for kids. But I found it to be an enjoyable, although predictable (but hey that you can expect) sequel.

29. One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961, Clyde Geronimi, Wolfgang Reitherman & Hamilton Luske) (rewatch): ? > 7.8 - As a kid this was one of my least favorite Disneys, but rewatching it now as an adult it rose immensely in my appreciation. This belongs among the better ones. Firstly Cruella De Vil (Cruella De Vil.. if she doesn't scare you, no evil thing will) is great monstrous villain. The dogs have human characteristic, but still also act like dogs with typical dog mannerisms. I also loved the cat sergeant and the dog colonel. It is still quite suspenseful (for an animated movie for kids). It's nicely animated with a nice early 20th century English setting.

30. Ōkami kodomo no Ame to Yuki [Wolf Children] (2012, Mamoru Hosoda): 7.5 - While the central part of the movie is a very good, heartfelt allegory about raising kids and letting them find their own paths as a parent, the movie takes a long time to set this central premise up. The final got too sentimental for my taste with the movie playing
what is basically a a dick move as a tearjerking moment.Show
Ame who decides to spent the rest of this life as a wolf, could at least have the decency to give the woman who sacfrified her whole life to take care of him and his sister a proper farewell so she could get some closure (his sister didn't even get the rushed sad goodbye)

31. The AristoCats (1970, ) rewatch: ? > 5.0 - Another Disney I found boring as a kid, but this one remains the dullest and weakest of the Disney classics. It has a weak villain, a dumb premise, there is no conflict, the upscale lady cat falls in love with the stray cat just cause opposite attracts (or maybe cause of his great cheesy pick up line; your eyes are like sapphires sparkling so bright), the posh cats learn nothing on their journey which is over in no time. I also don't get what a 1970s hippie cat is doing playing in a 1910s Paris jazz band?

32. The Prince of Egypt (1998, Brenda Chapman, Steve Hickner & Simon Wells): 6.2 - As far as animated adaptations of the Exodus go, this is pretty decent with some nice animations and good characterizations. But it alas never can truly escape it dated religious foundation. (I hate to say it, but the Old Testament God is kind of a dick).

33. Over the Hedge (2006, Tim Johnson & Karey Kirkpatrick): 6.2 - an okay, at times funny, formulaic movie starring animated animals.

34. Robin Hood (1973) rewatch: 9.0 > 9.0 - I loved this as a kid and still do. Just such a fun and sweet adventure.

Oh my bad. I got Stuart Little mixed up with something else I guess. It's the same kind of movie as The Smurfs (2011) though with live action actors and backgrounds with a lead animated character.
At a glance, it seems the main difference between Roger and Sonic/Stuart is that one is 2D and the others 3D, so I'd say they all count for the challenge.

I'm not sure how to rate this anime, because the quality is inconsistent. Some parts have bad dialogue, but other parts are very artistic and poetic. The soundtrack is good. The animation is ok. Occasionally there are still images, which are good. I think the series gets better near the end. Overall I'm glad I saw it, but I probably won't favorite it.

I haven't read the whole of the thread, so just checking: are you still collecting our screenshots?

I mean, I'll continue to post screenshots either way - just checking that I haven't been skipped.

While this has some great transformations and taps into the sense of adventure one could have as a cat, the high school crush angle kind of simplifies the fantasy potential here, making this more of just another depressed teen anime than an alluring transformation pic a la Wolf Children. The film also really spells out its agenda (characters talk about "running from your problems" by choosing to be a cat). Nice animation though - especially grass/trees.

10. 2.5* - City Hunter: Death Ot the Vicious Criminal [City Hunter Special: Kinkyû Namachûkei!?] by Masaharu Okuwaki (1999)

On the same level as most other feature-length City Hunter films. My main critique is also exactly the same: 90 minutes is too long for this type of material. The mix of comedy and action is pretty effective, but it's too repetitive to entertain from start to finish and the film inevitably starts to drag during the second half. The premise is a carbon copy of earlier films. Some woman seeks out Ryo with a special mission, Ryo accepts but is seemingly more interested in the girl. Cue some ecchi comedy and an arsenal of hammers to keep Ryo focused on the case. In the second half, things get a bit more serious. If you're familiar with the City Hunter franchise, you've seen it all before. The animation is too static, character designs are a little bland and the soundtrack isn't exactly inspired either. Compare it to the Lupin III series and City Hunter is worse on just about every level. It's still quite light and entertaining, it's just not consistent enough to keep it up for 90 minutes straight.

04.c. Le chateau de sable, by Co Hoedeman - 13 minutes

05. Genius Party Beyond (2008) 8/10

As a collective, I must say I certainly had more fun with Genius Party Beyond than with the uneven Genius Party... As a whole, the project is quite innovative and ambitious, and deserves a watch.

08. 1.0* - The Prince of Egypt by Brenda Chapman, Steve Hickner, Simon Wel (1998)

Not sure who thought it a good idea to turn Moses' story into an animated film, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a thinly veiled attempt to introduce kids into Christianity. This isn't the most interesting story to sit through as an atheist, not in the least because the film is quite pushy when it comes to its morality. Technically speaking the animation is fine, though the character designs aren't what I call pretty and the overstated animation style isn't a personal favorite either. It's the incredibly loud, cheesy and obnoxious soundtrack that killed it for me though. It's omnipresent and 100% horrendous. I don't understand why it's so hard for most US animations to come with a half-decent soundtrack. The Prince of Egypt runs just over 90 minutes, which isn't all that long, but the plot is terribly dull and the soundtrack absolutely grating, so it still ended up a rather tiring experience. At least the animation kept me occupied, even though it wasn't that aesthetically pleasing either. This film was basically just one big disappointment.
I kinda like Ofra Haza Songs... Depends on what languages you have watched the film of course.

Well, it's definitely an improvement. Might be because I can't understand the cheesy lyrics anymore, but the music itself is still pretty cringeworthy. The music from 3:30 on really gets on my nerves.

 Amazing indeed! Even the rather crude 90s CGI (something I often find aesthetically unattractive, crude or not), has its naïf charms, and fits within Miyazawa's universe. I also love the fact that it doesn't matter an iota if you know every single detail of Miyazawa's "life story" or not a single one, the film turns all biographical traits inside out- it follows its own springs, fragmentary, poetic, idiosyncratic, eccentric, cat-like. And when Chaos installs in its images and words, as a form of liberation, release, karmic consciousness, it left me shaking. The Galactic Railroad goes on...

128-129. FLCL Progressive E1-6 (2018)
I was a big fan of the original FLCL back when it first came out. A heady mixture of kinetic action, surrealism, absurdist comedy and a great soundtrack courtesy of The Pillows wrapped in a metaphor for coming-of-age, it was unlike anything I had seen before. Fast forward to 2018 and the popularity of FLCL among the stoner crowd on Adult Swim has brought about two sequels, Progressive and Alternative. Alternative I had already seen and was less than impressed with. Unfortunately Progressive falls into many of the same traps Alternative did. It plays out less as a sequel and more as a remix of the original, latching onto the action and obfuscated metaphor of the original but failing to add anything truly original to the mix, leaving it feeling like another rehash. Honestly I think FLCL was better served just being left alone. It didn't really lend itself to sequels and these two do nothing to change my mind.

132. Marudukku sukuranburu: Haiki a.k.a. Mardock Scramble: The Third Exhaust (2012)
This is a strange one. At first it feels like a kind of mix of Battle Angel Alita and Kite with a teenage prostitute who is targeted in a hit to prevent from testifying in court and who is reborn as a cybernetic fighter aided by a glowing mouse who can transform into various things including a gun. It's actually a surprisingly dark story delving into her past in child abuse and incest with graphic violence and nudity making it strictly not for children while also taking some odd deviations in the plot in the middle of the story into a psychological gambling storyline before the big showdown. The animation is quite good in places and the story has promise, but it never quite hits the right tone to completely work for me.

Image
133. My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Rainbow Rocks (2014)
Actually watching this in close proximity to those Monster High movies helps show why they don't work and this does. The dialogue is snappier here in general and the aniimation pops in a way the ugly CG of Monster High doesn't. The story line also feels like it has a little more substance incorporating elements of a richer back story from the main series. In the end, this isn't something I'd rewatch or anything but I can at least recognize a competently executed children's film from a badly executed one.

Image
134. The Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002)
Hey, you remember that part in the sequel to Victor Hugo's classic tragic novel where Quasimodo falls in love with a girl who's working with a circus con man to steal a fancy bell? What's that? Victor Hugo has risen from the grave and is rampaging through Disneyland in a violent frenzy of hate and revenge? That's cool, I guess.

Image
135. An Oversimplification of Her Beauty (2012)
Fascinating and very watchable but also intentionally obtuse and fractured, this heady mix of live action film-within-a-film fused with a kaleidoscopic variety of animation styles from stop motion claymation to rotoscoping to soft watercolor styles and more, doesn't quite gel in the way I had hoped with it's central seemingly biographical narrative hidden amidst the gimmicks.

Image
136-140. The Adventures of Batman: Complete Series (1968-1969)
This is the first animated Batman series to be made, produced by Filmation and including much of the same talent involved with Super Friends with a similar tone as well. It is best digested in small chunks of its two-part story lines rather than binging hours of it at a time over a few days like I did. Interestingly it does take itself slightly more seriously than the live action Batman series from the same time period making it probably a little more for fans of the classic comics.

I'd say it's more horror than hentai, but sure, better not watch this with the family.
