Squirrel!
Back when I was coaching football, I sometimes shouted that when I noticed my players weren't paying attention to me. Teenagers, even very smart ones, are easily distracted.

Up, by the way, is one of my all-time favorites.
Hah! Wife actually commented "Now I know where 'Squirrel!' comes from..." because I will sometimes just shout it randomly.

Ok, some of these anime movies are just a gateway to hentai.... so much unnecessary animated boobs and sex.

They count. Same rules as shorts: 60 minutes (so about 3 episodes?) add up to 1 point.

It's a rewatch. I was a kid when I first saw it, and I got really confused with the plot at that time.

Image
63. The Canterbury Tales (1998)
This was a bawdy, pretty fun adaptation of Canterbury Tales that certainly seems to capture the spirit and intent of the original stories. I should probably get around to watching Paosolini’s version to compare them.

Image
64. La Casa Lobo a.k.a. The Wolf House (2018)
This deeply unsettling stop motion nightmare has a strong Svankmajer influence with a somewhat cryptic and restless narrative that makes more sense after I read up on the Colonia Dignidad, a German settlement in Chile started by an ex-Nazi sadist and was rumored to be a place of torture, sexual abuse, internment and cult behavior over the years. It also makes the movie even more disturbing than if I were to know nothing about it. Definitely recommended for those who want to experience a unique painting-on-wall aesthetic filmed like a single take.

Image
65-68. Watchmen Motion Comic E1-12 (2008)
It had been a long time since I had read Watchmen, the seminal, highly influential graphic novel from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, so revisiting the material in this motion comic version was a nice way to experience it again (much more so than Snyder’s bro-down version from a year later). It just reminds me of how well-written much of it is and how well it still holds up and the added score helps give more weight and atmosphere to the proceedings. Of course, as one would expect, it did bring to attention certain flaws in the narrative I hadn’t noticed before like the MASSIVE exposition dump that is the second to last issue. And I actually think the way Snyder handled the ending made more sense in the narrative than the original comic’s ending. Otherwise, it is better in every way.

Image
69-73a. Arakawa Under the Bridge X Bridge E1-13 (2010)
This is the second season of the absurdist, funny series from Shaft that follows an arrogant young businessman who through a bizarre series of circumstances finds himself claimed as a lover of a girl who says she’s from Venus and is forced to live under a bridge with her and a motley group of oddball river dwellers. Each episode is actually made up of several shorter segments that may or may not be related. The animation is actually very high quality for this style of weird gag anime and the jokes are frequently chuckle-worthy to laugh out loud funny. I dug it.

Image
73b. Midori Days Sound Drama E1-3 (2004)
73c. Tanabota (2012)
73d. Collapse Animism (2016)
73e. Baa-cha no Kingyo a.k.a. A Grandma's Goldfish (2012)
Here’s a buncha anime shorts. The Midori Days sound dramas are just short little sketches featuring the leads from Midori Days with minimalist, motion comic-esque visuals. They’re ok but non-essential. The other three were odd little student short films I had randomly stumbled across on youtube and they all were solid which has me curious to see what else their creators have done.

Image
74. Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D (2005)
This is a primarily CG-animated recreation of the Apollo 11 moon landing with a little live action footage, both archival and recreations, spliced in to give it an additional sense of realism. Given it was done for IMAX 3D, you can imagine that visually it certainly pops with very impressive, life-like CG (with the exception of a few more low quality shots). Pretty neat but probably best experienced on an actual IMAX screen.

Image
75. Dragon Ball Z: Fukkatsu no Fusion!! Gokuu to Vegeta a.k.a. Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn (1995)
76. Dragon Ball Z: Ryûken Bakuhatsu!! Gokû ga Yaraneba Dare ga Yaru a.k.a. Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon (1995)
Sigh… a pair of mediocre DBZ movies...Fusion Reborn in particular feels especially lazy since they basically took Buu and Cooler, slammed them together and changed their colors to create the villain of this one.

Image
77. Monster High: Great Scarrier Reef (2016)
I hadn’t planned to watch this, but my daughter saw the mermaids on the cover and demanded it… This one did nothing to change my opinion of Monster High that was formed after the previous movie. There was a brief section where it changed to traditional cel-based animation for a minute, and it just made me wish the whole thing was done that way. I just find a lot of CG animation straight up ugly, these movies included.

Image
78. Growing Up with Winnie the Pooh: Love & Friendship (2006)
This is basically a compilation movie that showcases four episodes of the New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh TV series from the ‘80s with some wrap around segments done in a cardboard cutout style. I don’t mind when my kids want to watch Winnie the Pooh. It’s a much more calming show that rarely has characters screaming or cracking dumb jokes, so it’s a nice change of pace from the usual junk they watch.

Image
79. Dengeki oshioki musume Gôtaman: Gôtaman tanjôhen a.k.a. Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gautaman (1994)
Man, how was Go Nagai not involved with this? It’s about a devout Catholic girl who is goaded into becoming a scantily clad, ridiculously dressed superhero by a mysterious buddha. It is exactly as silly and pervy as that sounds. If you’ve seen any of the versions of Cutey Honey or Kekko Kamen, you probably know what to expect.

20. Meet the Robinsons (2007, Stephen J. Anderson): 5.0 - The computer animations looked very dated. The plot is too frantic. In contrast to the common opinion I found the balder hat villain very funny, because he was so stupid and pathetic. He saved the movie for me. Also because of the (unsurprising) reveal of his true identity.

21. Winnie the Pooh (2011, Stephen J. Anderson & Don Hall): 7.2 - Disney returns to some good old classic characters to tell a good old simple and sweet movie that's fun for the whole family. I liked the incorporation of the book and letters in this. The longer song sequences take the pace out of the movie, without those this could have been good.

22. Frozen II (2019, Chris Buck & Jennifer Lee): 4.5 - While I did like the first one, this was a poor, pure cash-in aimed completely at young girls. I found the animation to be surprisingly ugly for such a recent movie. Disney's only real stinker in the last decade to me.

23. James and the Giant Peach (1996): 5.5 - The puppet animations are admirable. All the rest was meh.

24. The Secret Life of Pets (2016, Chris Renaud & Yarrow Cheney): 7.0 - I found this to be very funny, with very likable characters going on a crazy adventure. I also liked the depictions of pet-owner relationships. It's strangely aggressive and violent for a kids animation tho.

25. Sing (2016, Garth Jennings): 6.5 - Formulaic plot, but still pretty enjoyable. While the characters don't have to be (cute) animals for the plot at all, the movie wouldn't be as amusing if they weren't. And great songs.

80. Constantine City of Demons: The Movie (2018)
Constantine, haunted by past decisions made when he was younger, is coaxed into helping an old friend free his daughter of demon possession. The continuity on this one is a little odd because it is apparently in the DC Animated Universe but played by the actor who played Constantine in the live action CW Arrowverse. The City of Demons storyline adapted from the All His Engines story arc in the comic is a sad but good one and it quite faithful to the source material compared to other versions of Constantine we've gotten (especially the garbage Keanu Reeves flick). Even the Constantine TV series waters the content down in places due to demands of basic cable. I would really like to see a Dangerous Habits story arc done in this same animated style.

Image
81. Once Upon a Girl.... (1976)
Basically adult versions of mother goose stories. Jack climbs the beanstalk, yes. But also has a bizarre sucking fetish and gets used as a dildo by the giant's wife. Everyone is a sex fiend of some kind. There are also these bizarre out of place wrap-around segments that are live action of mother goose on trial. The animation is pretty crude and it's rarely funny. Watch it out of morbid curiosity if you must, but don't expect to get anything out of it.

Image
82. Tower (2016)
Using a mix of rotoscoped animation in the style of Waking Life interspersed with occasional bits of archival news footage, Tower paints a very intense and grim picture of the notorious clocktower shooting on the UT campus in Austin that resulted in dozens dead or wounded. The structure of following several survivors through their daily routine leading up to the incident and how they were impacted, it puts a very real face on something that may be mostly known as a historical footnote to many and is incredibly effective in conveying the severity of the situation.

Image
83. Egon & Dönci (2007)
This one is a little curious. It starts very similar to Wallace & Gromit: A Grand Day Out following a man and his pet building a rocket in their yard but has some fairly strange digressions once they're spacebound with segments that feel more like something from the Mind's Eye series with abstract visuals and prog-techno music. It's not a bad film overall with some imagination to it but the character designs, especially the cat, are just hideous.

Image
84. Gekijô ban Naruto: Shippûden - Kizuna a.k.a. Naruto Shippûden The Movie: Bonds (2008)
I was honestly shocked at how poor the art and animation was in this big theatrical feature to one of the more popular anime series in recent years. I get why the actual TV series would have some badly done frames at times just from a budgetary standpoint, but with something like this, why would they cut corners? At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. The plot is inane and full of holes anyway and Naruto is irritating as usual.

Image
85. Brother Bear 2 (2006)
Brother Bear is one of those late period cel-based animated features Disney made that people don't really talk about much anymore (see also Home on the Range), so I had pretty low expectations for it's direct-to-video sequel. Honestly it wasn't bad with a nice sense of culture and brisk pace even though it does fall into some cliches with a predictable ending.

Image
86. Shounen Keniya a.k.a. Kenya Boy (1984)
So here we have the only animated film from filmmaker Nobuhiko Obayashi and it is somewhat infamous for how bizarre it is in the anime community. What starts similar to The Jungle Book about a boy separated from his father in the African wilderness soon becomes more and more confusing and weird as Obayashi takes a very long-running manga and compresses years of story into less than 2 hours. By the time Wataru is riding a giant snake back in time to fight a T. rex and dodge atomic bombs, it is clear why this movie is seen as such a strange one. Couple that with some odd artistic touches like animation morphing from more traditional early '80s anime style to more of a sketchbook animation style and characters changing color mid-scene, things like this, I can definitely see why someone going into this expecting a rousing adventure tale more akin to Nadia: Secret of the Blue Water will leave inevitably extremely confused. I honestly appreciated it though as it was certainly not boring. Sometimes I just like to watch the world burn, ya know?

Image
87. Shihaisha no Tasogare a.k.a. Twilight of the Dark Master(1997)
This is an early OVA from Akayashi Shinbou, one of the heads of Shaft and director of such series as the philosophical abstract fantasy/sci-fi of the various Monogatari seasons and the subversive horror and inventive art design of Madoka Magika. It is very much in a similar style to other horror from the '90s/early '00s like Pet Shop of Horrors, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and Bio Hunter. Plotwise it's decent but frustratingly like many other OVAs from this time period seems to leave much unanswered for future volumes that would never end up materializing. There are some delightfully gruesome, slithery demon transformations for those who want more of that kind of thing seen in the likes of Wicked City and Urotsukidoji.

I just wanted to check in and let my fellow challengers know that I am side-lined from this challenge for the moment. The wildfires this week have left me without electricity at home as well as the library I manage so I cannot be posting or watching movies regularly at the moment. It will likely be sometime next week before power is restored and I can get re-animated. In the meantime I'll just have to catch up on some reading. Happy viewings to everyone!

23-37. Robotech: The Macross Saga, Episodes 1-36 (1985) FTV 7+/10 {900 min. total}
Are you watching the English version instead of the original Japanese version?

I haven't seen either version, so I couldn't say which is better, but I've heard that some people criticized the English version for making changes to it. This page explains the differences in more detail: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/topic/2 ... -robotech/
I have been watching the English version. I discovered the box set in my library system and just couldn't resist. The video and audio quality are great. I would have preferred to tackle the Japanese originals first (it is edited from three separate series with the greatest changes made to the center part of the trilogy which I had just started watching before losing power) but the availability of this set and my memories of catching 1-2 episodes when it aired made Robotech irresistible.

Two anime from 2019 (I also ordered "Weathering With You" and "Children of the Sea" from the library, but I don't think they'll arrive in time for the challenge)

30. Ride Your Wave (2019)

Probably the most conventional Massaki Yuasa work that I've seen. Which is fine - I don't mind conventional, and I'm not much of a Yuasa fan. I liked this, it's sweet and relaxing, despite some tragedy, and it's not too long. Also, yet another summer movie with a disaster climax.

31. Promare (2019)

I liked this even more. It has a cool "flat-looking" art style (with things like square-shaped lens flares), and it's very energetic, and completely over-the-top, which admittedly gets a little exhausting over nearly 2 hours.

88. Ethel & Ernest (2016)
This tells the biographical story of the parents of the author of the source graphic novel as they live their lives during and after World War II. It has a charming art style that reminds of mid-century French comics like Tin Tin and has excellent characterizations that really give you a sense of who Ethel & Ernest were. The voice acting is pretty much flawless and the animation is subtle but perfectly suited to the material. Definitely recommended.

Image
89. Théâtre de Monsieur & Madame Kabal (1967)
I had seen several of Walerian Borowczyk's short films (although I still have more I may watch later this month), but I had never seen what I think is his only full-length animated feature. Not surprisingly, it's a weird one. The narrative, what there is of one, seems to be about a domineering wife and her pushover husband, but I'm not even sure about that. It's heavily surreal and episodic with a dream logic flow that belies any kind of traditional story structure. It's entertaining to watch but I don't know that there's any deeper meaning in it.

Image
90. Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017)
So if you want Resident Evil films that are actually more related to the video game timeline, then these CG-animated ones (of which this is the third) will probably be preferable over the live-action movies that share almost nothing in common beyond names. Still, don't come into this expecting a deep and involving storyline with nuanced characters. Essentially these movies are video game cut scenes extended to full-length feature territory with questionable voice acting (although still better than in the first game) and an almost constant barrage of action scenes. Apparently this one takes place after Resident Evil 6, if you're into continuity, but it really doesn't matter much.

Image
91. Bionicle: The Legend Reborn (2009)
Well, my son wanted to watch this and I can't say I was jazzed about it. I've always thought bionicles were pretty ugly robot designs and the plot of this one is just an excuse to see them fight each other via mediocre CGI. Meh.

Image
92. Hana to Arisu satsujin jiken a.k.a. The Case of Hana & Alice (2015)
I quite liked this one. It's directed by Shunji Iwai who is more known for his live action films like All About Lily Chou, and it is obvious he doesn't go the traditional anime route. The story is conceived as a prequel to the live action film Hana & Alice and uses well-suited rotoscoped animation to tell the story of a girl who investigates mysterious rumors about a missing and presumed dead student which ignites a very nuanced and well-written, life-like character study of the budding friendship between two girls and the misadventures they get into. Highly recommended for folks who feel that the typical screamy 'i'm gonna fight you' anime isn't for them.

Image
93. The Tale of Tillie's Dragon (1995)
Overly cutesy fairy tale-esque story of a little girl and her dragon friend... My 3-year-old daughter even got bored with it.

Image
94-95. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira E1-4 (2011)
This is a kind of alternate universe OVA series featuring the characters from the horror mystery series Higurashi When They Cry placed in much sillier anime tropes like ecchi harem comedy, magical girl adventure, school girl romance, etc. It's exactly as light and fluffy as it sounds. I'm not sure who the audience is for since the tone is radically different from the original series (although oddly they do sort of tie it in). I suppose if you saw character designs from When They Cry but wish the kids were getting into hijinks instead of being brutally slaughtered, maybe this one is for you?

Image
96. Wave Twisters (2001)
DJ Qbert brings an animated sci-fi sample-laden feature-length music video essentially. It's kind of hypnotic to watch with the the animation jerking rhythmically to the beats and scratches even though the actual story makes little to no sense. Seems like something that would air on Adult Swim at 2 a.m.

Image
97-99. Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated S2E17-26 (2013)
I finished out this Scooby Doo series last night after watching it off and on the last couple months. I have to say that while initially the teen angst elements turned me off somewhat to the series, it's involving, Lovecraftian dimension-hopping, string theory-based overarching story pulled me in as it really leaned into the world building and horror aspects of Scooby Doo much more than any previous series had while also still being pretty amusing at times (plus how many other Scooby Doo series are you gonna see referencing the likes of Twin Peaks' red room, an episode-long parody of The Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol's Factory as well as having Harlan Ellison playing himself as a disgruntled, cantankerous writer). Mystery Inc. is definitely one of the most engaging Scooby series I've watched in terms of catering to an older demographic (although Be Cool Scooby Doo is still hands-down the funniest).

32. Fun & Fancy Free (1947)

The first part, "Bongo", is boring. "Mickey and the Beanstalk" is better, but it's almost like an MST3K version of the film, with sarcastic comments by ventriloquist's dummies.

33. Coco (2017)

Quite a "bubbly" vision of the afterlife!

4. Misteriya-Buff (1969) FIRST CHECK!

This animated movie has more to do with "history" than "mystery" at it symbolically captures a slice of twentieth century Russian history. The majority of the action takes place aboard a ship transporting a greedy tsar, his blind followers and working class citizens who are locked away below deck. Everything is very fragmented in execution though, often cutting away to the animators in mime sequences and some nifty (if jarring) silhouette shots.

100. Hetjur Valhallar - Þór a.k.a. Thor: Legend of the Magical Hammer (2011)
Pretty mediocre public domain Thor movie. The talking hammer is pretty obnoxious and the animation is unimpressive.

Image
101-102. Shishunki Bishoujo Gattai Robo Z-MIND E1-6(1999)
This was a pretty neat homage to '70s mecha anime that poked a little fun at some of the tropes as well. As a stand-alone story it's just ok but for anyone who wants to revel in some nostalgia for those Sunrise series from back in the day, this will sate your hunger.

Image
103. Doragon bôru Z: Super Saiyajin da Son Gokû a.k.a. DBZ: Lord Slug (1991)
Goku vs. a Piccolo rip-off that's bigger and uglier but not much different. Like many of the DBZ movies, it's pretty lazily conceived.

104a. Ya zhdu ptentsa a.k.a. I Am Waiting for the Baby Chick (1966)
104b. Operavox: The Barber of Seville (1995)
104c. Vovka v Tridevyatom tsarstve a.k.a. Vovka in a Far Far Away Kingdom (1965)
The most notable thing in this block of Russian animation is the first short Ya zhdu ptentsa which is perhaps the earliest adaptation of the Dr. Suess book Horton Hears A Who. Even more curious is how few checks it has even though it's readily available on youtube.

Image
105. Walking with Dinosaurs 3D (2013)
I can see how someone would logically arrive at the conclusion to make this movie. Take the original CG animated dinosaurs from the original PBS mini-series, mix in a fictional narrative not unlike Land Before Time or Dinosaur and add some 3D effects and mild educational content to please both the kids and parents. Nevertheless it just feels kinda middling despite all that. It's darker in tone than the aforementioned dinosaur adventures with added doses of realistic dangers and consequences but is also just not engaging enough for adults either.

Image
106. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (2011)
This is intended as a follow-up to one of the games in the titular series and as such just kind of throws you into the middle of things without much character explanation as to who is who and the motivations of various people. Having only played some of one of the older games in the series, I honestly wasn't sure what was going on half the time and probably wouldn't recommend this unless you are a real fan of the series.

Image
107. Dragons II: The Metal Ages (2005)
I kinda felt obligated to watch the sequel to the previous MegaBlocks Dragons movie I watched last week just to get it out of my queue if for no other reason. Unfortunately, nothing has really improved with the lame dialogue, predictable story and clunky animation. This is a far cry from Lego's generally more engaging features that play up the humor more.

Image
108. Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017)
I wasn't expecting much from this but honestly it wasn't terrible. The theme of Smurfette finding her place in the world is recycled from Smurfs 2 but this is definitely better than those previous two entries. Being fully animated with lots of vibrant colors certainly helps but also by avoiding the boring fish-out-of-water plots the previous two movies took on, it allowed the Smurfs to get back to their more fairy tale-esque roots with the added benefit of not having as much groan-inducing toilet humor and endless pop culture references. Honestly the movie isn't amazing but even a watchable Smurfs movie is more than I was expecting.

Image
109. éX-Driver the Movie (2002)
I'll be brief since Onerhand already wrote about this one but in general it was ok. Basically taking the look of Initial D (although with less hideous character designs) and mixing it with more of the playful action tone of You're Under Arrest or Gunsmith Cats, it's decent but not terribly memorable.

Image
110. Scooby-Doo & Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2018)
I liked this one. Batman: Brave & the Bold is generally a pretty fun series. As much as I really like the original Batman: Animated Series, B&TB's polar opposite tone is a nice one to take in occasionally too. It also makes a lot of sense to pair this version of Batman with Scooby & the Gang. The mystery itself is super predictable but honestly that's not why I watched this. It's more just to see the Gang interacting with the likes of Aquaman and The Question, and I think the movie delivers pretty competently on this front.

Image
111. Shuranosuke Zanmaken: Shikamamon no Otoko a.k.a. Sword for Truth (1990)
This is one of those late '80s/early '90s hyper violent, sex-filled anime that really capitalized off assertions made by companies like Manga Entertainment that animation is NOT FOr BABIES ANYMORE! Of course, this ended up creating a negative stigma with some that anime is just 'those gross tentacle porn things'. Sword of Truth isn't terrible necessarily but it's also kind of mindless. Mainly just recommended if you've watched Ninja Scroll and want another anime with a guy with a sword hacking limbs and getting laid.

Image
112. Seoul Station (2016)
This animated prequel to the live action Train to Busan from the same director (Sang-ho Yeon who also directed Kings of Pigs which I watched last week) is excessively bleak at times, even more so than Train to Busan and is probably more thematically similar to films like King of Pigs than the typical zombie hoard movies like World War Z.

1. Rango (2011)
2. Bolt (2008)
3. WALL-E (2008)
4. The Emperor's Nightingale (1949)

9. Aladdin (1992)

Wife got Disney Plus for the challenge this month, so I'm rewatching stuff. Nightmare is fun and inventive - I love it, getting something creepy and holiday driven that actually creative. Aladdin, Robin Williams aside, is pretty run-of-the-mill Disney.
