4. Gake no Ue no Ponyo - Ponyo (Hayao Miyazaki, 2008) 6.5/10 ... Not really my thing, some cool visuals but basically a movie designed for kids, unlike most of Miyazaki's others that I've seen

42. One Piece Film Z (2012)

One Piece is usually too schmaltzy for me, but this was not too bad.

43. Bebe's Kids (1992)

I thought this would be a simple kids movie, but it turned out slightly raunchier and more satirical than I expected.

And it earns me Platinum on OFCS's list.

(D:) Are we going to see a repeat of Canada or are you only trying to fill in your gaps in the new Empire Russia list?

For what it's worth, that's where I have been sourcing most of my own recommendations from this month... but unlike you, I'm not aiming for a Plat.

I may randomly come across an animated film (watching with kids), but I am not planning on anymore. Gonna try to finish Russia, but I think its 130+ films.

Meh. <_< Unlike with Canada, I had no plans to win Russia at the start of the Challenge, so coming second place isn't going to break my heart, especially if I come second place to BBB, since it means that I will have still seen the most out of those not in Covid lockdown. B)

I have to keep remembering that I can't compare myself to the American users this year since half of them cannot leave their house. :pinch:

11. 1.5* - Asterix and Cleopatra [Astérix et Cléopâtre] by René Goscinny, Albert Uderzo (1968)

I've seen my fair share of Asterix animations when I was younger, but I don't remember many specifics. It could very well be that I saw this film before, but it's a bit too generic to tell. If you need an introduction into the world of Asterix it's probably a decent starting point, but as a film it's just poor. The story is extremely basic and taken directly from one of the comics. Asterix and Obelix get mixed up in an argument between Caesar and Cleopatra. They end up helping one of Cleopatra's architects to build her newest palace in record time. There's even some time for a couple of random musical bits in between, just to get to an acceptable runtime. The animation is very limited (the camera for example is either complete static, panning or zooming, that is it), the character designs are typical but lack detail. It all comes off rather lazy and cheap, like a quick cash-in built on top of the success of the comics. It worked of course, but I felt this film wasn't worth revisiting.

Luckily, I live on three acres outside of town so I have not felt as confined as many during this pandemic, and although I would welcome more time to get caught up on projects at home I've been working my regular 40+ hours a week all year except for a random extra day off here and there (like the day after our recent wildfire). My power at home was finally restored on Monday after six days without, and my library has power but is still vacant until they lift the evacuation for the town. I drove in to the library last night after working at another one and retrieved my wallet and laptop and some other items and the library itself is in great shape. I am anxious to reopen so we can start providing help and support to the community. Half of the town is devastated - leveled to ash and twisted shapes. Anyway, I have power again and I've watched some more animation which I will try and get posted later today (I don't have internet at home so I depend on the library to update my postings).

141. Heart String Marionette (2012)
What the hell was this? You've got this weird mix of model sets with I think some stop motion and a bunch of CG animation with a visual aesthetic that seems heavily influenced by Tim Burton and the Quay Brothers and a story line that makes no sense with a very pretentious gothic vibe to it. Most of the character designs are butt ugly and the voice acting is terrible. The movie also feels endless. Having said that, there are sparks of creativity and some interesting visual ideas in here that may make it worth watching for fans of more experiemental animation.

Image
142. Batman Unlimited: Mech vs. Mutants (2016)
Batman Unlimited isn't the greatest version of Batman, skewing very kid-oriented without the legit human of Brave & the Bold. Still, the idea of a Batmech fighting kaiju bat villains like giant monster Killer Croc and Bane is a solid one that makes the second half of this movie more fun than Batman Unlimited usually is.

Image
143. We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story (1993)
This one gave me vibes of a cut-rate Don Bluth rip off without the heart. It's too goofy to be very entertaining for adults usually although the demise of the villain is pretty dark (devoured by crows... yikes).

Image
144. Jimmy Murakami: Non-Alien (2010)
This was a solid documentary on the life of Jimmy Murakami, most known as animator of films like When the Wind Blows and The Snowman, and in particularly his family's internment in one of the Japanese concentration camps in the US during WWII. It uses a mix of live action interviews with Murakami and others in his life and animations, many based on his artwork, to tell the story. It is a little dry at times but covers a very important period in American history that is often ignored and really should be scrutinized more heavily, particularly given what's going on with the immigrant detention facilities near the border of Mexico.

Image
145. Kimi to, nami ni noretara a.k.a. Ride Your Wave (2019)
Masaaki Yuasa's newest film is, as frbrown had said also, probably his most straight forward, telling a tragi-comic romance story of a surfer who loses her love to the ocean but starts to see him appear in water whenever she sings a pop song they shared an affinity for (and a pop song you may get sick of by the end). It's still a solid movie with some beautiful visuals as one would expect from a Yuasa feature.

Image
146. The Star (2017)
From Sony Animation, who brought us classics like The Smurfs and The Emoji Movie, comes the story of the birth of Jesus Christ from the point of view of a rapscallion of a donkey. It has a weird tone that tries to balance the more standard smart-alecky pop culture influenced kids movie with the sincerity of a religious movie that gives tonal whiplash at times but may feel perfectly fine for folks raised on Veggie Tales. I wasn't very impressed, but I wasn't exactly the target audience either.

Image
147. Gnomeo & Juliet (2011)
It's Romeo & Juliet... but with LAWN GNOMES. I mean, that's pretty much it. Other than a few somewhat amusing lines and the surprisingly detailed character designs, this was a pretty forgettable middling Disney effort.

Image
148. Peter Rabbit (2018)
Ah yes. I was hoping that I could see a big budget CGI animated version of a beloved children's story character from my childhood getting into hijinks while Len's "Steal My Sunshine" blasts in the background. Honestly though, totally divorce it from it's bastardization of the source material and it's fine. James Corden as Peter Rabbit adds a decent wry sense of humor to his role and some of the supporting characters are occasionally amusing as well. Still, it reeks of modern CG kids movie with the toilet humor and random pop songs on the soundtrack.

Image
149-152. D-Frag! E1-12 (2014)
D-Frag the story of a juvenile delinquent who starts a new school and is immediately roped into joining an eccentric game club populated by insane girls. Wacky hijinks ensue. This anime felt too rushed to me. It introduces multiple new characters every couple episodes and rarely takes time to develop them much before introducing more. Eventually it turns into a series of absurd competitions with no clear end goal and a mild romantic subplot that never really gets flesh out either. It's fine as a mild diversion but definitely not one of the better comedies I've seen.

44. Lego DC Super Hero Girls: Brain Drain (2017 / Todd Grimes) FTV 7/10 {75 m.}

I think this catches me up - four pre-wildfire viewings and three from the last two nights after the power came back on. My last three were definitely chosen as light viewing and did not disappoint in that regard. Brain Drain had a lot of humor derived from the individual characters - something that the Lego movies often do very well.

153. The Fairly OddParents: Abra Catastrophe! (2003)
Pretty light, breezy kids entertainment that still is occasionally amusing although exhausting to watch given how hyper it is at times...

ImageImage
154. Kureopatora a.k.a. Cleopatra: Queen of Sex (1970)
155. Sen'ya ichiya monogatari a.k.a. 1001 Arabian Nights (1969) REWATCH
Osamu Tezuka adult double feature...Cleopatra was a first time watch and was pretty strange it's shapeless structure and weird sci-fi framing story. 1001 Arabian Nights was a rewatch I felt like revisiting after watching Cleopatra since I had both on a two-disc blu-ray and wanted to see how 1001 looked compared to the crummy youtube rip I watched before (it was MUCH improved). On the whole 1001 Nights is a better film, also visually interesting but with a more coherent story (if feeling a little overstuffed at times).

Image
156. LEGO HERO Factory: Rise of the Rookies (2010)
I'll forgive for thinking this is a Bionicle movie since it isn't. But it might as well be. Super generic and pretty dull robot CG fights.

Image
157. Phantom Boy (2015)
Solid French animated film about a cop in a cast, a boy who can astrally project and a journalist who get mixed up with an evil dude with a messed up face attempting to thwart his explosive plans. The tone is a little prickly, teetering between carefree spirited comedy adventure and heavy drama but I think it mostly pulls it off.

Image
158. Lego DC Super Heroes: Justice League - Attack of the Legion of Doom! (2015)
Like many of the Lego movies, pretty amusing but not transcendent. Getting Mark Hamill to play the voice of the Trixter was hilarious though.

Image
159. Cheap a.k.a. Dirty Duck (1974)
Hippy dippy AIP cash-in on Felix the Cat starring Flo & Eddie from the Turtles. Frank Zappa fans may find something of interest here but it's otherwise pretty relentlessly unfunny and dull.

Image
160. Virus Tropical (2017)
I liked this one. The tone reminded me of Persepolis as a coming-of-age in a culture I'm not too familiar with. Obviously the themes of gender suppression in Persepolis were much more pronounced but there are elements of that here as well as we follow Paolo growing up in the shadow of her sisters, who take divergent paths in life.

161a. The Master: A Lego Ninjago Short (2016)
161b. Lego Atlantis (2010)
161c. My Little Pony Equestria Girls Rainbow Rocks Short Films (2010)
161d. Dragons Toymation Short Film (2004)
161e. Batman: New Times (2005)
Buncha random mostly forgettable shorts. I did like Adam West's casting in Batman: New Times though.

12. 2.0* - The Secret of NIMH by Don Bluth (1982)

A slightly darker version of Disney's The Rescuers. Not sure if there was a pressing need to have a more serious film about a mommy mouse trying to save her child, but apparently Don Bluth thought it would be a good idea to go for it anyway. The result is a bit lackluster though. The film follows Mrs. Brisby, a timid mouse who lives in a farm field. The farmer is about to start plowing his field, so Mrs. Brisby has to find their family a new home. The problem is that her little boy is sick and can't be moved for the next three weeks. Desperate, Mrs. Brisby sets out to find Nicodemus, the mysterious but all-knowing leader of the rats. The animation is decent, the art style a bit bland, the soundtrack and dub pretty poor. It's a decent film for young kids who are ready for a slighter darker tale, apart from that the appeal is very small. Not the worst US animation I've seen, but I can't say it did too much for me.

The Teen Titans Go! movie was a repeat for me and held up well. I've always enjoyed the show and it translated well to the longer format with all the humor intact. The Barbie film began well, almost like a parody/homage to the Mission Impossible/Charlie's Angels films with a few other things thrown in too, but I started losing interest about halfway through it. Even so, it was entertaining and I cut it some slack since I am not the intended audience.

162a. Why Man Creates (1968)
162b. Las plumas del múcaro a.k.a. The Owl's Feathers (1989)
162c. Oz: The Tin Woodman's Dream (1967)
Why Man Creates was pretty interesting in places but I honestly expected more from Saul Bass. The Owl's Feathers was fine but the character designs were kind of ugly. With the Tin Woodman's Dream, I honestly expected more from Harry Smith. It started out fun and interesting but devolved into boring kaleidoscope nonsense in the second half.

163. Kôkaku kidôtai: Stand alone complex - The laughing man (2005)
This is a compilation film that basically ties together the Laughing Man story line from the first season of Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex. Despite originally airing episodically with non-story arc episodes interspersed in-between occasionally, it plays quite well as a continuous film and in fact I think actually may even work better in this format (despite the nearly 3 hour runtime).

164a. Saquu Gogei Iga a.k.a. On a Spring Day - A Trail of Tears Story (2006)
164b. Bill Plympton Shorts: The Loneliest Stoplight (2015), The Cow Who Wanted to Be a Hamburger (2010), Santa, the Fascist Years (2008), The Flying House (2011), The Gastronomic Shark (2015)
164c. NFB of Canada Shorts: Juke-Bar (1990), Getting Started (1979), Get a Job(1985), Blackfly (1991)
On a Spring Day is a very amateurish claymation production but is a very sad portrayal of the fateful day that would lead to the deaths of many Native Americans as the government forced them to leave their homes and walk the Trail of Tears.
I usually have fun with Bill Plympton and these shorts were generally no exception. The Loneliest Stoplight is pretty typical sentimental Plympton narrated by Patton Oswalt. The Cow Who Wanted To Be A Hamburger Santa, the Fascist Years are more in line with Plympton's darker humor and are both pretty funny. The Flying House is actually a carefully restored and colorized version of Winsor McCay's Dream of the Rarebit Fiend short with added voiceover that Plympton obviously put a lot of effort into out of affection for the master. The restoration itself looks great and the voiceover was fine although the colorization doesn't always work for me.
The Canadian shorts are pretty typical of these kind of films. None of them I'd say were instant favorites but they were generally mildly amusing.

165. Delgo (2008)
Eh... this was bad. Ugly character designs and sub-par animation for a fairly big budget film of this kind in what's obviously capitalizing off the success of Avatar... Avoid.

166. Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions (2016)
Why the hell did I just watch a Yu-Gi-Oh movie over two hours long?

Image
167. Terminator Salvation: The Machinima Series (2009)
This web series acts as a decent extension of the bleak future depicted in Terminator: Salvation. Despite the sub-par animation, if you enjoyed the film and want more future fighting Terminator death, this will probably work.

Image
168. The Humanoid (1986)
This was pretty awful... I own a VHS of this that I must have watched over twenty years ago but I didn't remember a single thing about it. After watching it again, I totally understand why. The voice acting and dialogue is terrible. The premise is both overly simple and needlessly confusing and exposition-heavy. The titular humanoid doesn't even show up until halfway through and isn't really even in it much until the last ten minutes which feel incredibly rushed. This is probably only of value as a MST3K-style party watch in the vein of junk like Garzey's Wing.

Image
169. Peter Pan 2: Return to Never Land (2002)
Another mostly forgettable rehash Disney sequel... yawn.

Image
170. Nakitai watashi wa neko wo kaburu a.k.a. A Whisker Away (2019)
The story here is a little on the predictable side and the Island of Cats section definitely feels like it's trying to channel Spirited Away, but it has some nice visuals and a likable lead. It's a decent film even though it doesn't rise to the Ghibli levels it's trying to reach for.

This begins well with a wonderfully surreal dream in which our protagonist interacts with an Italian plane engineer who insists that he is the one dreaming - and the Italian also pops up later as mentor. I found the dreams here though to be a lot more engaging than the reality of the movie, which features romantic melodrama, social misfit moments and the occasional debate about designing killing machines, but nothing as magical as the dreams.

1.1 Vinni-Pukh 1969 — a.k.a. Winnie-the-Pooh 6/10
1.2 Vinni-Pukh idyot v gosti 1971 — a.k.a. Winnie-the-Pooh Pays a Visit 6/10
1.3 Vinni-Pukh i den zabot 1972 — a.k.a. Winnie-the-Pooh and a Busy Day 6/10
1.4 The Old Man and the Sea 1999 8/10

x.1 Yozhik v tumane 1975 — a.k.a. Hedgehog in the Fog 7/10

So I finally got around to watching some of the most beloved Russian shorts. The Soviet Winnie Pooh is cool but I don't see why it is that popular. The Petrov short is my second-to-last of his available shorts and looks as beautiful as everything by him.
Now, with Hedgehog in the Fog I'm not completely satisfied but I have a feeling it will stay with me for a bit. I like how the simple drawing style is combined with 3D effects and the tilted "camera" movements. And there is this subtle underlying darkness that lingers on...

2. Vals Im Bashir 2008 — a.k.a. Waltz with Bashir 8/10
The medium of animated documentary is unusual and works well with the major theme of the film: dissociation from horrible experiences (by means of false and suppressed memories). At times it feels a bit playful due to that style but it never feels carefree, just like the ex-soldiers that are being quoted as trying to see the war as an action movie or a long day trip. There's poetic sequences in which characters try to create a surreal calm while we never really feel like they are not within the eye of a storm around them. In that the film succeeds in not exploiting the misery, only to bring us back to reality in a final blow.
Current recommendation: Angela (1995)

The first half of this is delightfully zany with the animation style for the raccoons frequently changing (from basic to detailed) as well as the raccoons themselves changing their appearances simply by leaping up in the air, and there are several hilarious stretches at hand - most notably, some repeated attempts to scare a mailman. The film has a serious tone to it too though and the second half gets a little bogged down in such morality and ecology.

171. Violet Evergarden Gaiden: Eien to Jidou Shuki Ningyou a.k.a. Violet Evergarden I: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll (2019)
This is the first feature length film in the Violet Evergarden series and the animation and art is as beautiful as always. The story is basically segmented into two arcs, the first having Violet grooming a homeless girl to be a member of the elite class and be married off to a rich suitor. The second half takes place a few years later when the homeless girl's younger adopted sister comes to Violet in need seeking to be a mail carrier. It's a good story told with a graceful touch that's typical of this series. If you liked the series, you will almost certainly like this movie as well.

Image
172-173. Kekkô Kamen OVA 1 & 2 (1991)
I had seen the first episode of this probably over 20 years ago and wanted to see if it was as insane as I remembered. Short answer: yeah, it was.

Image
174. Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (2020)
This relentlessly bleak and violent film is essentially a culmination of several years of DC animated universe films (like the DC animated equivalent of Avengers: Endgame) and is a solid way to cap off the films before they inevitably get rebooted. The tone reminds me of the story line from the Injustice video games. There is much death and destruction but the film is well-served with John Constantine in one of the lead roles adding some levity to the proceedings at times.

Image
175. Here Comes Peter Cottontail (1971)
176. The Easter Bunny Is Comin' to Town (1977)
My daughter has been going on about the easter bunny randomly the last couple of days (because that's what 3-year-olds do), so I thought I'd show her these two Rankin/Bass Easter Bunny specials. I think she got bored with them, and they were as weird as I remembered like many of these Rankin/Bass productions, especially the first one. Also Fred Astaire seemed to be having fun hamming it up in both.

177a. The Butter Battle Book (1989)
177b. Dr. Seuss on the Loose (1973)
177c. Halloween Is Grinch Night (1977)
Block O' Suess time. I was interested in watching The Butter Battle Book since it was animated by Ralph Bakshi and decided to take in a couple more Suess specials while I was at it. Grinch Night was the highlight, featuring some delightfully weird phantasmagorical creatures in the Suess mold.

Image
178. The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019)
The plot here felt very loose with several different seemingly unrelated story lines involving the various pets in a single apartment building that then come together at the end in a plot to rescue a mistreated tiger from a traveling circus. It doesn't really come together in a very satisfying way to me but is fine as middle of the road kids entertainment.

Time to finally put some of this up.

Asterix & Achmed

1. Astérix le Gaulois / Asterix the Gaul (Ray Goossens, 1967)
2. Astérix et Cléopâtre / Asterix and Cleopatra (René Goscinny/Albert Uderzo, 1968)
3. Les 12 travaux d'Astérix / The Twelve Tasks of Asterix (René Goscinny/Henri Gruel/Albert Uderzo, 1976)

The Asterix books weren't really a thing where and when I was growing up, in the midwestern US in the 70s and 80s, so it's only due to the fact that I took several years of foreign languages that I learned about them as early as I did - they were, and I suppose still are, along with Tintin a popular series translated into many languages which are often used in language classes, particularly in middle and high schools around here. So I probably read the first few books that I did read (no memory of which ones they were, unfortunately) in German - possibly in Spanish also though I don't remember that class having them. But the German teacher definitely promoted them and they have had a small place in the back of my mind ever since; there's an antiques mall about 2 km from me that has a selection of them (in English) and I've considered grabbing a few but...I don't know if the nostalgia will work this time, so I haven't, yet. I never saw the films when younger - if they got theatrical distribution here it would have only been to big cities, and by the time I lived in Chicago in the 80s-90s I had other priorities. So this is a long way around way of saying that here's another instance of something I've been aware of for most of my life, but just now gotten down to seeing. Too much anticipation is often a killer and...

So it is here to a certain extent. I didn't dislike these exactly, but they didn't do a huge amount for me. The first is definitely the weakest of the three, with a bare-bones plot (Romans discover the Gauls have secret potion, kidnap the druid, Asterix has to get him back), rather weak background work, and a little section where Asterix and Panoramix (named "Getafix" in the English subs on this copy) are engaging in a series of puns that were completely lost on me - and the translator. Meh.

Cleopatra offers significantly improved backgrounds and better animation overall, and a slightly more entertaining story, with Aterix, Obelix, Panoramix and Idefix (Obelix' dog) going on a trip to the titular ruler's country to help Panoramix' friend complete a new palace for Cleopatra, which he can't seem to do without magic. Of course there are bad guys (not Romans this time) to tangle with who want the architect Numerobis to fail. Probably the best action scenes in this series of three, and mildly enjoyable overall. The fact that series creators Goscinny and Uderzo take over directing duties I'm sure has at least a little to do with the improvements here.

Les 12 travaux is on about the same level, with certainly the most interesting and varied animation and backgrounds - Asterix and Obelix have to, you guessed it, complete 12 tasks along the lines of Hercules' monumental labors - if they succeed, their tribe will be acclaimed gods by Caesar, if they fail they will submit to Roman rule. The main problem here is that many of the tasks are dealt with in a really perfunctory manner - the film is only about 80 minutes and the first few minutes are the set-up, so that leaves just 5-6 minutes on average per task. The labor of dealing with the bureaucratic building is definitely the best bit.

4. Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed / The Adventures of Prince Achmed (Lotte Reiniger, 1926) (re-watch)

When I first saw this over a decade ago it was listed as the oldest surviving animated feature - and it still is. What's up cinema historians and hunters? Nothing else found in the last decade? But to be fair, given how laborious the process of detailed animation was - of any kind - in those days, it's not surprising that there were very few films made that got to feature length, and that this is the only survivor known. But given the incredible beauty and quality on display here, one can only hope that there are more treasures to be found yet, as this still stands among the greatest achievements in the field. Reiniger's art is simultaneously wildly detailed - as detailed as 2D silhouettes can be anyway - and subtle - what I noticed particularly this time is the small deft choices she makes in creating faces which are all quite distinct from each other. I love the way she creates her monstrous characters and the way they often combine with each other, and the way she handles flight, and combat - it all seems years ahead of it's time, and yet at the same time something hermetic and sealed, in a special class of it's own. Probably because it was so time-consuming, and because a decade later the Disney factory came along, and other animators in France and elsewhere were more likely to following along something like that path, Reiniger's achievements were sidelined to a great extent, and apart from Michel Ocelet in the past couple of decades, she hasn't had many followers in her giant steps. Which helps to make this treasure seem all the more special.

Apart from the animation, there are plenty of interesting elements to the story as well. It's based on stories from the Arabian Nights, but the major character of the witch, who first seems like a foe but turns out to be the implacable enemy of the sorcerer who has stolen away hero Achmed's sister (the daughter of the Caliph) seems a little unusual in the medieval context. At any rate it's interesting that the crux of the story pivots around her, and that Achmed's love, the rule of Wak Wak, seems a bit pale as a heroine in comparison. If the film has a flaw really it's that it's a bit too short and fast-paced but I can't really fault it greatly for that.
