Subtitled "how might he learn?", this documentary looks into the future of education and what the classrooms of tomorrow might look like. It is a fascinating topic, especially when viewed retrospectively, and the first few stretches are great as we see pendulums and film loops as examples of technology back then. An experimental screen literacy program is neat too. As the film progresses though it loses focus and concentrates on teens.

12. Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 (2017) QC-fr/en - 8ish
13. Angry Inuk (2016) NU-en/iu - 8ish

Got my bilingual check from the sequel to Canada's biggest bilingual blockbuster. Rather good, it kept the fun atmosphere of the first and told a new story without seeming like a rehash of the old one. Some scenes toward the end haven't aged well in light of recent police-related events (if David had been black and pulled some of his stunts, I don't doubt he would have been shot immediately) and the motivation of the main bad guys is kind of wonky, but overall I quite enjoyed it. I was a bit perplexed when the bigshot from the FBI started speaking, because it sounded like he had a Maritime/East Coast accent, which threw me off. Some fun scenes making fun of Americans (our favourite pasttime?) and they threw in a terminal illness without feeling cloying and sappy or too cheap.

Angry Inuk was a pleasant surprise, not knowing much about it going in. The copy I have only included Spanish and Catalan subtitles for the Inuktitut parts, so I got to practice my Spanish comprehension (as well as pronunciation by testing out the speech-to-text feature of the Google Translate app), but it didn't hinder the flow of the film too much. The fact that this took 8 years to make speaks to how hard it still is for many independent and indigenous filmmakers to complete their films. This is a one-sided documentary on the seal hunt and the hunting bans enacted primarily by the European Parliament, but it's one that manages to wear it's bias honestly and without prejudice for the other side. I found it a fascinating expose of the hard life in the Arctic, the importance of seal hunting not just for food but for economic security, and the hypocrisy and greed of some environmental organizations (I'm even considering stopping my monthly payments to Greenpeace, which I've been sending for over a decade now). The filmmaker, one artist-lawyer, and even the political students that give speeches or interviews in the film are all well-spoken (as I suppose you would expect, as they wouldn't include poor arguments in the film), which is something you don't really see in the rest of the media landscape. My second new favourite of this challenge.

I was surprised to see this film pop up in your list. I checked out imdb and Canada was indeed listed as the first country of production there, so I'll allow it for this challenge since you counted it in good faith, but this is not a Canadian film; it's an American film filmed partly in Canada. I've submitted a correction to imdb to remove Canada from the list, in case anyone checking in the future is wondering why it's no longer there.

Lots of great ideas abound in this early David Cronenberg venture which, with its focus on genetic mutations, feels very much like a warm-up for the body horror master. A third viewing only confirms though how amateurish it feels, with many drawn out dialogue-free scenes, but it is frequently fascinating though as it looks at "creative cancers", organs extracted from a man who keeps growing new organs "seemingly without function" and so on.

FTV:3: Tanya's Island (1980) 4.2 on IMDb. Toronto. English.

Bonus Challenge 1:The 80's.

This gets a trash-tastic 8 from me!

Image

Splashing credits on the screen as waves wash over a naked Vanity against Jean Musy’s dark synch score, director Alfred Sole & future Scream (1996) cinematographer Mark Irwin place on the island a gloriously bonkers atmosphere of sleazy Canuxploitation flesh and a downer freeze frame, with New Age Freudian (!) babbling, boosted by Pierre Brousseau’s screenplay hilarious stumbling dialogue attempting a sincere psychoanalysts of Tanya and the beast within man, leading to a fantastic, utterly strange twist ending.

Swinging from a blood-socked Tanya, (played by a charmingly rubbish Vanity, whose awkward, flat line delivery adds to the weird delights) and Lobo (played by a delightfully gruff Richard Sargent) to a jungle containing a Rick Baker and Rob Bottin designed frisky gorilla, Sole happily piles the weird atmosphere high, thanks to sliding from one extreme of Psychotronic in Lobo’s turn into a screeching savage, to the other,in the sight of the howling gorilla called Blue, shaking the cage with a lust to get his hands on Tanya’s islands.

It is on your Canadian Films on Official iCM Lists list, so I assumed it was eligible. I didn't do any other checking beforehand, sorry.

Focusing on a misanthropic young man, this has a lot of interest at first. It easy to relate on his desire to not be part of a structured society, and the film is exquisitely shot in luscious black and white. Alas, as he drones on and on about the same issues, his diatribes soon become repetitive and he eventually comes across as more of whiner than the philosopher that he initially seems to be. His treatment of his girlfriend is quite deplorable too.

The special effects are just as grisly and gooey as per Cronenberg norm here as the plot of this brief project involves a man who finds himself able to transfer the afflictions of others to himself, and then pass those afflictions onto others (hence the title). If quite interesting as a companion piece to spread-of-disease films like Rabid and Shivers, this wasn't quite as amazing as I remembered with an abrupt ending that left me aching for more.

It is on your Canadian Films on Official iCM Lists list, so I assumed it was eligible. I didn't do any other checking beforehand, sorry.
 That's on me then. I clearly didn't do a good enough check last time. I'm the one who should be apologizing, not you.
I've removed it from that list, but as I mentioned, it still counts for you for this challenge. And in fairness, if anyone else decides to watch it (though based on Traveller's rating, maybe they won't :P ) it will count for them as well.

Sorry!

A Canadian film producer considers approving an experimental script in this industry satire. The film begins well with humorous voice-over as he talks about the difficulty making adventurous films in Canada when they rely on tax payer money, and the considered script is comically pitiful, involving a man who cuts up his wife, stores her in paint cans and nothing more. There are lots of fun scenes of the script being dissected - but a silly romance too.

While the single location here might bring to mind Phone Booth or ATM, this is nowhere near as intense because there is no malicious external force confining him there. Mike Flanagan's Gerald's Game is probably the best comparison piece given that Adrien Brody's protagonist hallucinates here too, yet his hallucinations are less dynamic. There is actually very little driving the plot to the point that it becomes repetitive quickly. Good ending though.

No worries, everything of yours has checked out so far when I've looked into them. I don't want to be too strict here, since it's not a poll, and because I'm clearly not always right  But yes, if something is blatantly not Canadian, I'll post it here.

OP updated. Nothing much changed, except mjf has joined us. Fun fact: Traveller & Mario have the exact same hits for decade, region, and language. Blueboybob is still way ahead on the main challenge, and sol has pulled away from me in the bonuses :yucky:

Yeah, I also watched the show, and not the specials, as a kid. The first special is a little rough, but they get better (and bigger-budgeted, it seems).

Yeah, sorry about that. No worries and cheers for still letting it count. I have one more though: What about Trick 'r Treat (2007)? It’s also on your list, but neither wiki nor IMDb cite Canada as a production country. I haven’t seen it yet, so I’m just checking prior to watching this time if it’s eligible. :D

I've gone back and forth on that one over the years, and I can never fully make up my mind lol. I think I decided it was American, but must have forgotten to remove it from my list. It definitely had Canada listed as a country on imdb at some point (I may even have removed it myself). There is one Canadian production company listed (Little Same Films) but I can't find any other info about it. So, based on that and the fact it was in my list at the start, I'll accept it for this challenge.

Haha no worries at all. Glad to light a fire under your ass :p

I think I can keep up a twice-weekly OP update: once on the weekend and once mid-week. And yes, I noticed the completion of the regions, but forgot to mention it in the update. Great job on that. I'll hunt for that Yukon title, as I think that'll be the hardest one for me. New Brunswick has a bunch, but they're proving difficult to acquire. Everything else I've already seen or have lined up.

Far better than the Roger Corman film, this Canadian comedy offers a sharper satire, looking at consumer behaviour and panic buying. The plot involves false rumours of a fuel shortage spreading, which causes everybody to fill up their vehicles unnecessarily, which in turn leads to an actual fuel shortage. The film mixes in a few too many protagonists and different comedy styles and therefore feels inconsistent, but gee is this Covid-19 relevant today.

Those look to me like Mexican films made by a Mexican-born Canadian director, but let's see what Ferg says. We all know you need the extra points. tehe

While some plot summaries give it away, it is not until the second half of the film that the girls' exact crime is revealed here and the mysteriousness certainly adds to the experience as it becomes mostly about the respective interviewers trying to get their subjects to open up. Another cool technique is the use of colour for the flashbacks of the girls meeting and bonding, with only black and white for the present day scenes. Interesting stuff.

At least I pointed it out... I could have tried to sneak them in :)

Thanks for mentioning this. I was thinking about seeing these as well. IMDB lists the country as Canada (+ other countries that are co-productions), so I think it would count.
