This is powered through by a strong lead turn from Tim Roth; the two child actors who play the boys as kids are fairly good too. The way the film keeps jumping between the present day and flashbacks soon becomes irksome though - and much of the movie is melodramatic. Some of the World War II, Holocaust themes and renouncement of religion ideas work well too, though these are buried under flashbacks and present day awkward conversations.

Some curious ideas exist here: inanimate objects outliving their owners and the value something once worthless can gain. As a narrative though, the premise alone is insubstantial, and a weird sex-with-violin scene aside, most of the movie is cut and dry, with little explanation of what makes the violin so great until the final third when Samuel L. Jackson as an authenticator becomes prominent. The science behind his craft is quite interesting.

6. Horses of Suffield (1998) AB-en - First to check, and under 5 votes on imdb - 7ish
7. Drylanders (1963) SK-en - 7ish
8. Mourir à tue-tête [A Scream from Silence] (1979) QC-fr - 8ish
9. Zero Patience (1993) ON-en - 8ish
10. The People of Kattawapiskak River (2012) ON-en - First to check - 7ish

Horses of Suffield was a decent documentary about a herd of wild/feral horses in southern Alberta that were destroying the protected rare habitat they lived in. It's a story I knew nothing about, so I found it interesting, if slight.

Drylanders was the first narrative feature film from the NFB; they had set out for Saskatchewan intending to shoot a trio of short documentaries, and decided to make a feature instead. It's billed as a epic, and despite the film covering 30 years of events, it's only 70 minutes long, so not epic-worthy to me. Good acting, good scenery, but the story is a bit thin (if accurate). I thought the snowstorm scene and the old age makeup the most interesting parts, which were quite well done for a production company not used to special effects. And one of the actors playing the adult sons went on to direct Wedding in White ten years later.

A Scream from Silence starts with a heavy 20-minute rape scene, so massive trigger warning in effect here. Then it jumps all meta, and I won't explain anything else about the plot so that you can experience the film unfolding as I did. The rest of the film isn't as traumatic as the start (save for a brief scene of historical footage showing a very graphic female circumcision/genital mutilation on a girl under 10). It's a really interesting look at the depiction of rape, the psychology of rape (specifically heterosexual rape), and the consequences of rape. I thought it was really well done, and recommend it for all.

Zero Patience was amazing. A rare first-time-favourite for this one, it had me from the first two catchy songs. Even though it's tagged as a musical, I hadn't really paid attention to that before. It's definitely a satire/comedy as well. Pity none of these actors seemed to do anything after this film, though director Greyson went on to make Lilies, another beautiful film. I think this film is a great deconstruction of the AIDS crisis in North America, and the way it was (mis)handled, with blameshifting, profiteering, and widespread denial. And despite the heavy subject matter, it was a lot of fun.

Kattawapiskak River was okay; I definitely felt it could have delved deeper into the housing crisis on the reserve and the other peripheral circumstances that lead to the crisis. I watched it because I want to see Hi-Ho Mistahey (which imdb tells me is in Cree), and Obomsawin apparently was making TPoKR when the situation that is the subject of HHM unfolded, so I wanted to get some perspective for that film. I've also got her Trick or Treaty? doc lined up for after, as it covers a related topic. [Side note: After seeing all three, Obomsawin will become only the fourth female director that I've seen at least 4 feature-length films from (after Bigelow, Varda, and Bier). I do watch a lot of female-directed films, especially in the past three years or so, but it always seems to be different directors. I have a few more at 3 films (Polley, Mehta, Armstrong, Coppola, Martel, and Sciamma), so I should finally hit my ancient goal of 5 directors by the end of summer)]

I've had some great luck with the TIFF Top List films that I've been putting off for so long. I'm approaching 200 Canadian features as well, and I'm glad and excited there are still amazing films out there I haven't yet discovered, despite putting so much effort into seeking out and seeing the best of the best.

I'll update the OP now, and then post some Week 1 stats.

OP is updated.

Blueboybob is well out in front, with 64 points, with sol the only one anywhere close with... 34 points. :D Sol's record of 82 from the 2017 challenge looks to be in doubt, considering we're only 1 week in.

Rounding out the top ten we have:

We have 20 participants so far, 8 shy of the 28 we had in 2018. Come one, come all! I've also updated the Participants table in the OP to include all participants from all 4 challenges. We have some returnees after missing out the last challenge (frbrown and morrison-dylan-fan), and some old-time forumers participating for the first time (Mario Gaborović, Onderhond, and connordenney). And welcome to blocho and zzzorf for joining in since the last update.

Things are more competitive in the Bonus Challenges, with sol taking a lead overall, but Fergenaprido and blueboybob are close behind. Sol's also the first person to complete all the decades (10 pts), and leads with the regions (8 pts) and languages (3 pts, tied with Traveller), while Fergenaprido leads the underseen category (5 pts). Anyone in the top ten, though, is still capable of catching up, or even winning one of the individual categories:

As a group, we've conquered all decades, all regions except Yukon Territory, 3 different languages (English, French, Inuktitut), and 7 first checks.
The most common decade is the 2010s, with 15 users, province is Ontario with 17 users, and language is English with 18 users.
I haven't kept up with directors (I may do so at the end) or films, but I've noticed The Decline (2020) and Goon (2011) mentioned a few times so far, and I think there are a couple of others that have been seen by multiple people.

You're still ahead, barely, in the provinces/territories category, so you're fine there. :P But yes, I intend to dominate the underseen films challenge. :hmph: I've been focusing on the decades and regions to start, but I'll start hitting the languages (looks like the Cree film is mostly in English... might end up being bilinguial in the end; I've also scouted out films in Farsi, Hindi, Punjabi, Mandarin, Korean, and Inuktitut, and will keep my eye open for more indigenous-language films) and underseen ones more now since I've got the bases covered and I've resigned myself to the fact that nothing I do will stop blueboybob from passing me in the Canada toplist rankings. :D

I see you're almost on the first page there too. Congrats in advance!

Thanks for the update and detailed stats. For the record, I have got something lined up for Yukon (and the remaining territories/provinces that I haven't yet conquered) but I've been a bit distracted lately by trying to get more checks on the Official TIFF list with the aim of being on Page 1 of users for the list. Can't afford to get distracted with such things though since you're set to win the bonus challenges simply by concentrating on underseen films. :pinch:

11. Hi-Ho Mistahey! (2013) ON-en - 7ish

I got it backwards last post: Obomsawin was making this film when she paused production to make TPoKR after that housing crisis arose, and then she went back to making HHM. I also just discovered that she is 87 years old and still making films (she was 80 when she made the two I just saw), doing many of the key jobs on her films herself. This film is better than the other, as it's almost twice as long so it has more time to tell it's story. It meanders a lot, which can be frustrating for those looking for decisive and concise narrative, but I let the film take me on it's journey, weaving together seemingly disparate parts of the town's circumstances, to slowly put together the complex parts of the story. There's very little footage of Shannen herself, though she definitely was a good speaker for one so young, and the film doesn't always focus on the issue of the school, but I think it all comes together in the end. Oh, and while some Cree is spoken, it's less than 25%, so I'll have to find another film to qualify for that language (or even a bilingual one). The search continues.

Thanks for the mention. ;) I love this country and its filmic output. Innovative horror films, creative animation, and amazing documentaries. Speaking of which, this documentary might well be the single best film that I have seen for the Challenge so far:

More than just a documentary about an expedition to film the Northern Lights in Manitoba, this is a documentary about how we live "in a time where things don't seem to exist if they are not captured as an image". Something else thought-provoking arises from the difficulties that the crew have in filming the natural phenomenon; maybe some things were never meant to be filmed? What footage we do see is enchanting though with superb audio.

Speaking of which, this documentary might well be the single best film that I have seen for the Challenge so far:

35. Picture of Light (1994) Manitoba / English

Image

More than just a documentary about an expedition to film the Northern Lights in Manitoba, this is a documentary about how we live "in a time where things don't seem to exist if they are not captured as an image". Something else thought-provoking arises from the difficulties that the crew have in filming the natural phenomenon; maybe some things were never meant to be filmed? What footage we do see is enchanting though with superb audio.
It's film of the week this month, so I'm looking forward to it. After seeing and liking Gambling, Gods and LSD (2002) earlier this month, this sounds very promising.

A film about a young Syrian refugee who finds a portal that takes her to Nunavut where she meets a local Inuk girl. While refugee displacement and grief themes enter into things, this is first and foremost a tale of two girls bonding and the interactions between the two actresses feel very real. While a family drama on the the surface, things get a little creepy at one point when the Inuk girl's grandmother recounts a story of fingers chopped off.

In case Ferg or anybody else is wondering, the film is not totally shot in Inuktitut, contrary to the information on the film's IMDb page, and while I did watch the film specifically for the possible Inuktitut bonus point, it is actually pretty decent, and it ended up being a first check @ iCM too. B)

With regards to languages, I would say that Inuktitut is the dominant language in the film, but not by a long shot, and it is only really in the second half of the movie that the language becomes prominent. The refugee girl's parents speak to her in a mixture of Arabic and French, while the two girls use English to communicate. At a guess, I would say that 40% Inuktitut, 20% English, 20% French, 20% Arabic would be pretty accurate.

A fictional recount of an actual massacre; while shocking and brutal at its most confronting with children killed too, the project often feels distracted by focusing heavily on a romance. The film also drones on a lot about true love and the virtues of monogamy over polygamy. The deluded Mormons angle is a lot more interesting, however, the film paints them as pure evil as opposed to trying to get under their skin and understand their thinking.

The premise is okay with some quirky bits as our teen protagonist tries to hitchhike to Mexico and enroll in educational programs out of town. The film quickly grows repetitive though; it is mostly scenes of her complaining about how cut-and-dry her town is strung together, while at the same time we never see what is so terrible about the place that she feels such a desperate need to escape. Liane Balaban is certainly fine in the lead role at least.

Thanks for reminding me that mini-series episodes count individually if they're long enough. I've got the sequel lined up for my PEI watch, but was putting it off for being so long but only worth one point lol.

As the trapper protagonist traverses Canada's north, we see both picturesque rivers in the warmer areas and dense forests, while lots of serene ice and snow in the colder parts. Taken as a narrative though, this works less well. There is very little driving the story with no urgency or sense of danger, an early appearance by a bear aside. The voiceover narration also varies in effectiveness; some of his truisms sit well, yet a lot feels documentary-like.

Image

Shot almost entirely in Cantonese (a few lines of the film are in Spanish), this documentary looks at a 74-year-old woman who immigrated from China to Canada when she was much younger. Every day she gets up and works on a farm run by herself and her son with the help of Mexican immigrants who share similar tales of choosing to live in Canada over other places. In the final third of the film, we learn that she has never learnt to read English or even take the bus in all her time in Canada - something that actually feels a lot more interesting than the mundane day-to-day farming we mainly see.

Good rec, Ferg. This was interesting not only for showing the angst of the Native people at the prospect of a pipeline, but also questioning whether the pipeline could all be for nothing anyway since building on permanently frozen ground is something that has never been done. I found the documentary's attempts to be neutral (also stating how the pipeline would provide so many jobs to the natives) less interesting, but this was compelling overall.

Aerial footage of Canada's ten provinces is spliced together in this documentary narrated by Stanley Jackson. All of the landscapes that we get to see are interesting, and yet, this is an up and down ride. Jackson's humour varies a lot in effectiveness; there is a very funny part early on as he talks about how Canadians "have to protect themselves" since they live next to Americans, but most of his jokes fall flat. Some brief kid narration was great though.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Based on a real life priest and boarding school, this is mostly powered through by Thomas Peacocke's commanding performance as an unconventional priest who heavily drinks and smokes and the memorable spats that he gets into with his superiors over denouncing Communism, with his staff over his contradictions for appropriate teacher etiquette and with his students. As for the students though (in fact all other characters) they're interchangeable.

Shot on a handheld camera that the filmmakers even take into the water, this is generally considered to be a pioneer and revolutionary documentary. Most of the first half though simply consists of the villagers either sitting or standing around and talking with the occasional dance in masks in between. The action picks up in the second half, and the whale capturing is intense, but I wanted to like this film about preserving traditions more than I did.
