18. Father's Day (1997) 5.3 on IMDb

The plot does not totally add up here and the film uncomfortably endorses some wildly manipulative behaviour, but Billy Crystal and Robin Williams play well off each other with great banter and improvised routines. Julia Louis-Dreyfus also has fun moments as Crystal's confused wife, but her confusion is rarely milked for all that it is worth. As for the scenes without any of the film's three stars, they all fall flat, some drug dealer stuff especially.

AVERAGE IMDb RATING SO FAR: 86.5 ÷ 18 = 4.81 / 10

19. Cannibal Girls (1973) 4.6 on IMDb

Image

While there is little explicit cannibal action, this film features a fair dose of gore and squeamish suggested killings, such as a bit where a victim screams in pain in close-up while the girls (off-screen) begin biting his stomach. The structure of the project feels a little frenzied though, full of flashbacks that last so long that one tends to forget that they are flashbacks, but it is all rather slickly filmed with creative camera angles and some clever framing.

I remember seeing this in theaters when I was 12 and loving it. I'm guessing it wouldn't hold up nearly as well today.

I liked Robin Williams quite a lot when I was younger, so maybe I would have liked it too back then. Ivan Reitman pretty much gives Williams and Crystal free reign to do what they want in their scenes together, and some of it is amusing. I can't imagine ever loving a film like this though. Something really odd: their 'son' has almost no personality; he is such a boring and dull individual that it is kind of amazing how they both wish they were his father...

20. My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006) 5.1 on IMDb

Image

The first half-hour of this Ivan Reitman comedy is actually a lot of fun as Luke Wilson dates super-heroine Uma Thurman without knowing her identity and just assumes that she is neurotic and quirky. The film loses a lot of its oomph though once Thurman reveals her identity; her character feels entirely rewritten for the final hour of the film with unrelenting jealousy suddenly surfacing. Most of the rest of the film is lame, but the Sharknado spoof is rad.

10. Seizure (Oliver Stone, 1974) IMDB: 4.6
My Rating: 5/10
Has some camp value but is still too slow in places.

11. Mi Amigo Hugo (Oliver Stone, 2014) IMDB: 4.0
My Rating: 2/10
Dull propaganda

12. La battaglia di Maratona a.k.a. Giant of Marathon (Jacques Tourneur/Mario Bava, 1959) IMDB: 5.0
My Rating: 5/10
The IMDB rating feels about right on this one. Kinda listless first half but does have a pretty entertaining battle in the back half.

13. War-Gods in the Deep (Jacques Tourneur/Ishirô Honda, 1965) IMDB: 5.4
My Rating: 4/10
Eh, the underwater sequences just kill the momentum.

Hey Gang! I'm thrilled to be back in this challenge. Let's dive in. Really this challenge could not have started in better fashion for me.

1. Nomads (1986) 5.4 on imdb
I saw this on OldAle's rec, and it's not a good movie, but it deserves better than imdb's mediocre rating. For starters, this movie has a young Pierce Brosnan as a French anthropologist. There's also a decent shot of Pierce's rear end, if that does anything for anyone. There was a solid five seconds in the movie when Brosnan starts talking about nomads, and I thought: Wow, maybe this will be a serious movie about anthropology. Nope. It's more like a bourgeois fantasia on 1980s Los Angeles, where biker gangs and street bunks are not urban nuisances but actual demons. It's an odd narrative, and there's also no sense of pacing or tonal shifts. On the other hand, there are several quality sequences, not least an encounter between Brosnan and a spectral nun played by Frances Bay (who you may remember as Mrs. Tremond from Twin Peaks or as Happy Gilmore's grandmother). And I have to admit that the final scene was pretty great.

2. Serenity (2019) 5.3 on imdb
This movie was dumped into the January graveyard back in 2019 and received almost rapturously negative reviews. I've rarely read such enthusiastic negativity in movie reviews -- everyone wanted to slip the knife in. And I'm here to say, what the fuck! This movie is too much fun to be that bad. It's a fishing movie that's also a neo-noir that's also a mindfuck. Yes, Serenity inhabits the same terrain as Dark City and The Thirteenth Floor. Of course, this movie isn't nearly as good as those two. It has plent of groan-inducing moments. You can't do worse than a line like "There's some weird stuff going on right now," which McConaughey says about 40 minutes in, as if the entire movie to that point had not been weird stuff.

I had been curious about this one for a while, having heard the occasional positive comparison to Lynch but knowing full well of the film's reputation. Turns out, it is actually a decent thriller with some amazing visuals - lots of neon and pronounced reds and blues. It is a bit of a personal identity study if you will, with lots of doubles, second halves and so on with everything revolving around Linsday Lohan waking up in hospital to be told that she is not who she thinks she is. I can understand why fans of Lohan's comedies might have gone 'ugh' at this, but is a stylish and intriguing ride.

2. Independence Daysaster (2013) 3.4
3. Shark Killer (2015) 3.9
4. Bigfoot Ate My Boyfriend (2016) 5.0

6. Metal Tornado (2011) 3.2
OK. So, this company is harvesting solar flares to create energy. But when they turn the system on, they lose 2% of what they expect. Where did it go? Into a magnetic tornado! Anything metal gets sucked into in and destroys anything in its past. Paris succumbed, but Philadelphia miraculously was saved in the nick of time. This is appropriately rated on IMDB.

7. Deadly Inferno (2016) 3.6
People trapped in fire in building. Just like every other movie with this premise, except they somehow took that premise and made it boring. Actually OVERrated on IMDB.

8. Pride of Lions/The Dependables (2014) 3.8
Shitty "The Expendables". Grandparents go to war to save their grandkids. Rated appropriately on IMDB.

I'm surprised some of these are rated that low, particularly Honey Pupu. Was it too weird for some?

Certainly 10 years ago. The internet is even more ingrained into our lives now (also among somewhat older generation), so I think the film could start to make sense to a broader audience. Back then it really felt like something that was inherently part of a younger generation, and they don't generally mix with film fests very well, which I guess is where the low score comes from?

Written and directed by Oz Perkins, this is not as eerie and atmospheric as his February (aka The Blackcoat's Daughter) with too much voice-over, but it is cut from the same cloth, with a brooding sense of dread and few overt scares. While the ending leaves more questions than answers, Perkins richly captures the nurse's pure terror and fear. There is a particularly great shot of television static washing over her face and the audio design is incredible.

I hated this entry in the Leprechaun franchise. The hero in the last one was irritating, but this one is not only worse but he's incredibly stupid and greedy into the bargain. The Vegas setting is wasted, and too much time is spent on completely unfunny sequences of attempted comedy.

7. Blackhat (Mann, 2015) Rating: 5.4
There were a couple of very good gunfight scenes and it's always a pleasure to be immersed in Mann's photography of neon-drenched cities at night, but the story was inert, with too many scenes of people fussing over computer readouts.

Opening with an over-the-top commercial for a weapon plane, this comedy gets off to a sharp satirical start. Things become darkly comical too as Chevy Chase surprises potential buyers with his black market bazooka. Alas, after this strong start, the movie falls apart. The biggest issue is that this pulls in a lot of different directions at once and kind of forgets to be funny. Gregory Hines probably has the best angle as Chase's born-again Christian partner.

AVERAGE IMDb RATING SO FAR: 109.0 ÷ 23 = 4.74 / 10

I'm not going to be a contender, but I might as well join this challenge so that I'll have something to do while selecting which 1946 movies to watch the next few weeks.

1. Big Town (1946, William C. Thomas) - 3/10 - 5.3
--- You could sense producer William C. Thomas hadn't directed many movies himself. Relatively poor, or at least extremely underwhelming. The actors does a little better, but that doesn't stop Big Town (1946) from being a really bland crime-drama.

2a. Francfort-sur-le-Main, Alter-Marktplatz (1896, Lumière) - 1min - 5.1
2b. Réception de S.M. l'Empereur Guillaume II: Réception de S.M. l'Empereur d'Allemagne à Francfort-sur-le-Main (1896, Charles Moisson) - 1min - 4.8
2c. Seine Majestät Kaiser Wilhelm II. in Stettin (1897, Germany) - 1min - 5.1
2d. Salle à manger fantastique [A Dinner Under Difficulties] (1899, Georges Melies) - 1min - 4.9
2e. Carriers Leaving Building, U.S.P.O. (No. 2) (1903, American Mutoscope & Biograph) - 1min - 4.1
2f. La bous-bous-mie (1909, Louis Feuillade) - 7min - 5.3
2g. You and Your Family (1946, George Blake) - 7min - 3.0
2h. Jan Savitt and His Band (1946, Jack Scholl) - 10min - 5.3
2i. Wing, Claw and Fang! (1946, USA) - 10min - 2.5
2j. Junior Prom (II) (1946, George Halligan) - 21min - 5.4

3a. Here Comes the Circus (1946, USA) - 9min - 3.1
3b. I'll Take Milk (1946, Hal Yates) - 18min - 5.3
3c. Johnny Learns His Manners (1946, Hugh Harman) - 18min - 4.5
3d. Movieland Magic (1946, James V. Kern) - 16min - 5.3

4a. Moron Than Off (1946, Jules White) - 17min - 3.8
4b. Midnight Menace (1946, Josh Binney) - 23min - 4.7
4c. Let's Give a Tea (1946, Edward G. Simmel) - 20min - 4.0

5. The Heat's On (1943, Gregory Ratoff) - 6/10 - 5.2
--- This one's underrated, if for Victor Moore comic performance alone. Probable the best you'll ever see William Gaxton as well. Those two really get the most out of their parts. Though, the attraction is naturally Mae West. She commands the screen regardless of her facial expression feeling soulless in this one. She is attitude, and with that you know The Heat's On (1943).

6. Devil Bat's Daughter (1946, Frank Wisbar) - 3/10 - 4.7
--- Supposed to be a horror, but it's a melodrama with hints of something suspicious going on. Not very thrilling. It does go on with its business without becoming unbearable, but Devil Bat's Daughter (1946) is nowhere near as exciting as the title might suggests.

1. Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (2009) 2.5
2. Independence Daysaster (2013) 3.4

4. Bigfoot Ate My Boyfriend (2016) 5.0

What!? I actually kind of liked this one. The narrative does turn into something of a mess in the back half though. I thought it was definitely better than a 4.7/10 for sure.

Oh, I was actually expecting to like it myself (despite the low IMDb rating), which didn't help. I really like Chevy Chase as an actor (usually) and Gregory Hines had some great roles in the 1980s, but I really couldn't get behind this one. It's possibly the only Chase film that I have come across in which I intensely disliked his character. The noir-like narration always felt pretentious to me, and then the way he so easily steals the contract after Wallace Shawn's death, not caring one iota about ethics... and then there is Sigourney Weaver, who doesn't seem to really care about it is either. I'd look at it this way: this is the film in which Wally from My Dinner with Andre commits suicide and everybody just carries as if suicide is the zaniest thing that could possibly drive a comedy. I don't know. It wasn't a bad bad film, but boy did it rub me the wrong way.

If low ratings is the requirement, then it's time to head for Cage Country.

Well, I mean, how can you deny that exclamation mark in the title?
