1. Climax (2018, 21st Century) 2/10 Noe’s motif of kicking pregnant women is really getting old. Despite one impressive dance number, this was a masturbatory exercise stemming from the director’s derangement.

Full of abstract imagery, eerie sounds and large bouts without a single spoken word, this is daringly different and almost worth watching for its uniqueness alone. As a primer on the subject though, the film is less effective; we are virtually dropped in the midst of things without much background information, and the initial interviews are hard to understand. With archive footage of Maggie Thatcher, the film eventually finds a structure though.

With gushing winds and characters often wandering through dust clouds, Kurosawa brings something mystical here and the short musical bursts work well. It is as a comedy that the film is most effective though, with Toshiro Mifune slyly smiling while eavesdropping on the feuding families, enjoying playing puppet-master, while quipping "it'll hurt". Tatsuya Nakadai is also excellent, though the film could do with more Nakadai/Mifune interplay.

OP updated.

As for who leads on the individual lists, it looks like everyone holds true to their words so far.

TSPDT 1-1000
1Traveller11
2Prat10
3erde7

The main list is led by Traveller with 11 points, closely followed by Prat (10) und erde (7). These three currently stand out slightly among the rest.

TSPDT 1001-2000
1Obgeoff10
2flavo50007
2tourdesb7

On the newly added official list as well we have a three people breakaway led by Obgeoff with 10 points and flavo5000 and tourdesb with 7 each, keeping the peloton at a safe distance (next one at 2).

TSPDT 2000s
1flavo50004
2tourdesb3
3Traveller2

The current century list has only three people with more than one point –- flavo5000 currently stands on top with 4 points.

Question : Does "Diary"(1983) count as one or six entries ?
I'd say one because IMDb says it's a 5h30 movie, but it's split into 6*52' episodes.

I've been wondering about the same thing. I think that the same question goes for "Hitler, ein Film aus Deutschland" (1977) which is a 7h 22m film divided into four episodes.

This features one of the most well-known twists ever, but one that fascinatingly comes towards the middle of the film with much of this concerned about the ramifications of the twist. This actually makes for rather sweet and touching love story of a different type, and the way the IRA hitman's past comes back to haunt him towards the end makes a curious obstacle. Loved the performances too; I am very keen to podcast about this tomorrow.

For my two cents, Diary (1983) definitely would just count as one. It has always been shown as one complete film theatrically from what I can find. With Hitler (1977) I think you could make a stronger case for it as a mini-series since it did air on television over multiple nights in many countries.

Traveller, what are your thoughts?

La Commune (2000) by Watkins seems also to have be shown in parts (at least two), but it is also treated more as a film than as a miniseries, even though it's nearly six hours long.

Thanks for your input, everyone. I was initially going with how IMDb defines it, but casually checking O.J. (2016) just now I realized that it is not tagged as mini-series, which it has always seemed to be for me. Therefore, if it is tagged as mini-series on IMDb, the mini-series rule applies; and if you can make a reasonable case for non-as-such-tagged entries (i.e. O.J. (2016) or Hitler (1977)), I will happily count it as multiple entries as well.

So for the titles mentioned above I’d say:
Diary (1983) counts as 1
Hitler, ein Film aus Deutschland (1977) counts as 4
O.J.: Made in America (2016) counts as 5
La commune (2000) counts as 1 (unless someone has any indications why it should count as 2)

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

OP updated.

Today, we cycle back to how the individual lists are doing. The main list still leads the competition. However its lead has decreased somewhat, with both the 1001-2000 and 2000s list gaining in popularity.

If any of you folks planning to watch OJ want a prequel recommendation to watch beforehand, LA 92 (2017) is a pretty damned amazing lead-in to set the stage for the public interest/outcry over the OJ trial. It's also an AMAZINGLY topical doc right now.

There is something intriguing in how the samurai become so involved in the town's struggle here and the plight of its citizens that they lose sight of it being a job. As a character study, I found this is less effective (some samurai are better developed than others). Toshirô Mifune comes off best: giggling, always kidding around and entertaining the village children. Otherwise, this was an up and down ride for me, but the final line about victory resonates.
