Toshiro Mifune once again comes between two feuding clans in this Yojimbo sequel that often feels more like a simple retread of the original. There are some distinct differences that balance in the film's favour (the comedy is even more pronounced; the bloodshed towards the end). Generally speaking though, I still found this to be far less dynamic than Yojimbo. Mifune again plays both sides, but he is always clearly more supportive of one side.

Funny coincidence, I also watched a Bo Widerberg film starring Thommy Berggren as a struggling writer today:

3. Kvarteret Korpen / Raven's End (Bo Widerberg, 1963) 8/10

Engaging and depressing tale on a man coming to terms with the mistakes and faults of his parents, at a point when he is about to make similar mistakes that will devastate the next generation as well. There are some uncomfortable truths about life here, but it does not shy away from issues of social class due to the design and execution of institutions in Sweden at the time it depicts (the 1930s).

SpoilerShow
1. Blowup (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1966) 8/10
2. Le bonheur / Happiness (Agnès Varda, 1965) 8/10
3. Kvarteret Korpen / Raven's End (Bo Widerberg, 1963) 8/10

If anyone has recommendations (including prioritization of movies not in the top 25 of this list), feel free to share :)
I quite liked "Mandabi", just like all of Sembene's movies. "These Are the Damned" is one of my favorite horror movies. And of course "The Great Silence" and "A Fistful of Dollars" are among my favorite westerns.

14. 7 Women (1966)
With hsi final film, it's almost like John Ford set out to make the least John Ford movie he possibly could (at least on the surface). No John Wayne. A distinct lake of rampant misogyny. A very strong lead female character in Anne Bancroft. A very cynical view of religion. The only real male character is a gibbering weak-minded jackass for much of the movie. but look a little deeper and some of his hallmark touches are still present both good and bad. Themes of courage in the face of adversity. His excellent framing. Random racism in the form of the mongols portrayed only as ruthless savages (with the lead of course cast by a non-Asian). And of course, a relentlessly obnoxious side character that I guess is intended for comic relief (am I the only one who kinda wished Florrie died during childbirth?)? Still for those who are a little jaded by many of ford's overly machismo-driven pictures, give this one a try.

7. DA ZUI XIA (Hu, 1966) — Maybe not the most intricate acrobatics and fighting in Hu's filmography but there is still much more to enjoy (Chinese classical music, folk legends, characters, group photography, set and costume design, colour, etc.), a real treat. 8/10

@hurluberlu: I'll count O Bandido da Luz Vermelha as a 1968 release, I'm guessing it might have been a typo?

Country stats:
40 - USA
15 - UK
9 - Italy
8 - France
6 - Hong Kong
5 - Japan
4 - Spain
3 - Mexico
3 - Sweden
2 - Czechoslovakia (Czechia)
2 - Taiwan
2 - West Germany
1 - Bolivia
1 - Brazil
1 - China
1 - East Germany
1 - Hungary
1 - India
1 - Iran
1 - Israel
1 - Poland
1 - South Korea
1 - Soviet Union (Russia)

I have counted The Forbidden as Italian due to imdb, but I wonder if US or France would be more correct, what say you flavo? What makes most sense?

Actually if any I'd probably consider it France. It was originally a French film that basically had a couple of scenes added and an English narration done by Bob Cresse. I honestly don't even know why IMDB even lists Italy as a country. I'd think it'd be France/US.

8. SKUPLJACI PERJA (Petrović, 1967) — One of the characters in this film gives a good description of it when he refers to his Romani (real) shantytown as "this is no longer a place for the angels", because, except for the abundant white feathers and the occasional evangelical murals shown as a parallel to the earthly reality, almost everything makes a bleak succession of filth, wickedness and misfortune (mud, broken glasses, drunkards, stabbings, dead babies, funerals, worn-out clothes, garbage dumps, battered women, mutilated children, rape attempts, children marriage, grey economy, etc.). 6/10

Thanks a lot :)

Photographed in vibrant colour, the landscapes and native animals look great. As a narrative, the film is not quite so solid. Hawks began shooting with an unfinished script and the story comes with little sense of urgency and oddly limited sexual tension. This rather leisurely pacing is actually appealing though with the film really providing a sense of what life is for the men who actually truly love their animals despite how cruel their trapping may be.

9. LA MATRIARCA (Campanile, 1968) — Wealthy heiress Catherine Spaak looks fantastic in every design of her endless wardrobe while she investigates the world of paraphilias (shoe fetishism, bondage, rape fantasy, whipping, role playing, formicophilia, prostitution, exhibitionism, pony play, spanking, WAM, etc., and others that are simply mentioned or suggested) in a relaxed (thank Armando Trovaioli's score) and lighthearted comedy. 8/10

This plays out as a partial documentary with overly descriptive third person narration, but the voiceover is weirdly sporadic. The dramatic crux of the film also only arises in the final 25 minutes as the customs of the Eskimos and laws of 'white men' clash with intriguing moral dilemmas that would have been better as the focus here. Alas, most of the film is rather spent on Anthony Quinn trying to find an Eskimo wife and speaking a lot of broken English.
