11. KAVKAZSKAYA PLENNITSA, ILI NOVYE PRIKLYUCHENIYA SHURIKA (Gaidai, 1967) — Agreeable, colourful and naive, not exactly my kind of humour but pleasant anyway, probably great to watch with children in the summertime, I preferred the first part, showing the traditions (toasts, drinks, dances, games, celebrations, camping) of the villagers, to the rest, filled with tricks, mix-ups and some slapstick. 7/10

Plus…Show
1. TINTIN ET LE MYSTÈRE DE LA TOISON D'OR (Vierne, 1961) — 7/10
2. IL GIOVEDÌ (Risi, 1964) — 8/10
3. ABUELO MADE IN SPAIN (Lazaga, 1969) — 6/10
4. THE CREATION OF THE HUMANOIDS (Barry, 1962) — 4/10
5. GAAV (Mehrjui, 1969) — 7/10
6. FLAMING STAR (Siegel, 1960) — 7/10
7. DA ZUI XIA (Hu, 1966) — 8/10
8. SKUPLJACI PERJA (Petrović, 1967) — 6/10
9. LA MATRIARCA (Campanile, 1968) — 8/10
10. SI J'AVAIS QUATRE DROMADAIRES (Marker, 1966) — 8/10

Years-wise, I'm surprised that 1961, 1965 and 1969 are trailing behind. Surprised 1960 is the third most watched year so far.

That's a strange way to rank participants, where is the third and fourth? Shouldn't it better to rank us 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 6, 6, 6, 6, 10, 10, 12, ...?

12. OBYKNOVENNYY FASHIZM (Romm, 1965) — Unusual documentary about the III Reich, it relies on its extensive film archive to illustrate the most horrifying chapters (USSR invasion, call to total war, concentration camps) but mostly to comment on definitely less bloody subjects, yet more interesting to me, (role of big industrialists, Nazi arts, indoctrination of the youth, parades, women as reproductive tools, control of the masses, oaths, etc.) often removed of solemnity by notes of sarcasm very much to the point (aristocrats, Aryan skulls and thighs, body language, Il Duce, personality cult, popular celebrations, etc.). 7/10

13.1. EISENBAHN (Mommartz, 1967) — As much as I love watching through the window while traveling on train, repeating 60 times a shot of 35 seconds that shows an almost featureless landscape from inside a moving train can't be anything but numbing, and that answers Vogel's question. 2/10

13.2. NAISSANT (Dwoskin, 1964) — More avant-garde boredom, during 14 minutes we watch a silent young woman lying on the bed, apparently also bored, she smokes, looks at her nails, sometimes seems to be worried, then smiles... 2/10

Image

13.3. MAGRITTE OU LA LEÇON DE CHOSES (de Heusch, 1960) — The ideas of René Magritte about reality, space, words and representation sound too vague or too obvious to me but combined with his surrealist paintings and an enigmatic music make something that is inspiring, original and beautiful. 7/10

Thanks for hosting Lilarcor.

FTV:1:Harakiri (1962)10.

Image

Bringing the sword down on this adaptation of Yasuhiko Takiguchi’s novel by titling Hanshiro Tsugumo “The ronin from Hiroshima”, the screenplay by Shinobu Hashimoto brings the defiance against authority in post-WWII Japan to the early beginnings, of what would become a consolidation of power, leading to the 250 year Tokugawa reign.

Seating Hanshiro face to face with Saito in the house of Li Clan palace, the poetic dialogue Hashimoto balances the blade with the refine allegorical brutal, feudal authority of the Li Clan being used to rip the other clans and samurai’s of the land apart, leading to Hashimoto striking back, and exposing the fragility from shattering their orders. Bringing Hanshiro into the palace pledging to commit harakiri, Hashimoto skilfully blades the allegorical with a absolutely thrilling samurai tale, drawing Hanshiro’s compassion for his family with a fierce, passionate fire to fight and save the individualism of his family, up against the authoritative band of Li Clan.

Saying later in a interview with Joan Mellen in 1972 that “In any era, I am critical of authoritarian power.” directing auteur Masaki Kobayashi reunites with cinematographer Yoshio Miyajima, and stylishly displays his rebellion against authoritarian rule with the empty suit of armor hanging above the Li Clan palace like a gargoyle, which Kobayashi brings crashing down to earth via Hanshiro throwing the façade of power from the armor, right back at Li Clan. Cutting Toru Takemitsu’s score to sparse inserts, Kobayashi displays a expertise in the use of silence, filling the Li Clan palace with Hanshiro’s anguished words, being only interrupted by the lone sound of wooden panels being stepped on as guards rush to Saito’s side.

Igniting a lit fuse atmosphere which ends in a thrilling final fight, (where real swords were used!) that breaks the walls of the Li Clan palace, Kobayashi begins to shake the foundation with long static camera shots a few feet from the floor listening to Hanshiro, that Kobayashi starkly cracks with tightened close-ups on Hanshiro’s agonised face, and refined zoom-ins on the terror sinking into Saito’s face. Reuniting with Kobayashi,Tatsuya Nakadai gives a incredibly raw performance as Hanshiro, thanks to the love and warmth Hanshiro gives to his family, being contrasted by Nakadai with a simmering rage to fight for freedom freed from harakiri.

1964 got a great bump in two days, currently the leading year! Meanwhile, 1961, 1965 and 1969 are still far behind. It's sad, watchers. Feel bad about this.

14. CHARLES MORT OU VIF (Tanner, 1969) — Dim existentialism in cold Geneva, Tanner reads Saint-Just, quotes Walter Benjamin, the Surreal Manifesto, Henri Michaux, Chinese proverbs, recalls anarchists Guillaume, Schwitzguébel, Kropotkin, Malatesta, Bakunin and questions cars ("a system of social dispersal"), the shift from craftsmen to businessmen, the values of bourgeois families, sanity, the lack of goals in life, the dangers of ("stupid") technology, the use of mass media to instil models of fake happiness or the Swiss democracy ("the last stronghold of male hegemony"): "Forget everything you have learned, start dreaming". 6/10

15. LA PYRAMIDE HUMAINE (Rouch, 1961) — Abidjan, early 1960s, Rouch mixes two groups of students, Africans and Europeans, in a sort of filmic social experiment or ethnofiction set to explore their improvised relations in a context of racism at the end of the French colonial era; they read poetry, dance, criticise each other, talk about apartheid in South Africa, flirt and fight, play on the beach and share their secret places, alternating poetic with rather prosaic moments. 6/10

FTV:2:Zotz! (1962)7.

Image

One of two non- Horror flicks in the set, Indicator give the film the same loving treatment as The Old Dark House, (1963-also reviewed)from crisp audio and a picture transfer that retains film grain, to detailed extras on the background of the production.

Departing from a successful run of Horror shocks for a production he later called “Therapeutic”,and turning down offers from Walt Disney to the rights of the novel from him, director William Castle works for the first of two times with cinematographer Gordon Avil, and surprisingly displays a gentle touch for playful light-hearted hip fantasy Comedy which would later find a groove in the era with the likes of I Dream of Jeannie on TV, thanks to Castle sliding the camera along in panning shots towards Jones new powers, which are conjured up by a jaunty score from Bernard Green.

Finding his trademark gimmick to sell the film on by reproducing the Zotz coin, Castle handles Jones superpowers with a magnetic experimental edge, via stylish manipulation of film speeds hitting hilarious sight gags, shock sound effects striking anyone Jones gives the finger to,and in a outstanding set-piece, Castle blending live action and animation for a early use of Bullet Time! Completely trimming the religious aspect of Walter Karig’s novel, (even changing the school Jones works at from St Jude’s Theological Seminary, to Saracen’s Valley College)Ray Russell reunites with Castle, and in his adaptation successfully scatters the spirit of Disney’s live action output of the era onto the film, as Jones (played by a energetic Tom Poston,in the first of his two Castle outings) finds himself a fish out of water, leading to very funny exchanges of Jones trying to get his family to believe the power of Zotz.

Retaining some of the satirical bite of Karig’s novel, Russell spins Jones adventure from a absent minded professor into a breezy Cold War Comedy Caper! Thanks to Russell bouncing Jones from arrogant US generals who ignore Jones offer to work with them, into the hands of the evil Reds, who have their eyes on the zotz.

This recounts the experiences of Burke and Hare and the doctor who turned a blind eye to where the pair were sourcing their corpses from since he was in so desperate need of cadavers for training and research. It is a curious slice of history with a dual focus on the doctor and killers, yet it certainly pales against the dynamics in the likes of The Body Snatcher despite being rather slickly made and photographed, shot in 2.35:1 widescreen no less.

Released a couple of years before George A. Romero would turn the zombie horror subgenre on its head, this is a more clinical treatment the trope, circling around two doctors trying to work what is going on. This approach results in a film that is refreshingly slow-paced and more entrenched in ambiance and mystery than the average zombie flick, something that makes the sudden appearance of the first zombie 29 minutes in truly startling.

This telepic about a paranormal investigator who called in to deduce whether or not a blind man is really being haunted comes with quite a bit of an atmosphere at first thanks to Conrad L. Hall's creative lighting and camerawork, eerie wind gusts from the seaside central location and some rather creepy dissolve-over special effects. As the movie progresses though, it becomes a much more dialogue-heavy affair, leaving it a little hard to care.
