45. Lonesome Cowboys (1968)

Image

A pretty aimless film and with poorly recorded/muffled sound, jump cuts and jarring scenes transitions, the project feels more of an attempt to subvert cowboy movies than make one. Alas, the poor filming soon becomes repetitive; only so much screeching is necessary to be subversive after all. The film almost reaches something interesting halfway in as they debate whether they gang raped a prostitute or not, but the dialogue is too hard to make out.
I still maintain that Andy Warhol is actually the world's first internet troll. He just didn't have the internet to troll on so he had to invent his own media.
I actually sort of liked Vinyl at the time, but I absolutely hated Flesh :yucky: and I would only rate Lonesome Cowboys one or two notches above it.

It is nice to see Al St. John get pretty much his own film here, and there are some solid scenes early on as St. John outwits outlaws and buys a newspaper business at auction with Buster Crabbe there to prevent dishonest bidders. St. John is, however, a lot less funny than usual here, perhaps due to being written as a lead rather than comic relief. As the film progresses, it also begins to feel more like standard Buster Crabbe fare.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

16. Grey Gardens (the Maysles/Ellen Hovde/Muffie Meyer, 1975)

TCM. I'm a little ambivalent about thinking of this as a "comedy" but then I tend to be ambivalent about most documentaries also having genre designations. It's not like there was necessarily any "design" for comedy here, though parts of it are funny. But most of this is rather sad, a story of missed opportunities and choices made for perhaps the wrong reasons, particularly on the part of "Little" Edie, the younger of the two same-named women ("Big" Edie is her mother) who inhabit a rambling and decaying old house in the Hamptons, who are close relatives of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy but seem by the 1970s to inhabit a world of their own. One of the striking things about this to me - somebody who tends to be interested in architecture in films - is that we only see a couple of rooms in the many-roomed house; whether this is because the film crew was only allowed in a few spaces, or the rest of the house was in even worse repair, I don't know. It's a fascinating portrait of isolation and an unhealthy, needy relationship, and it makes me wonder what my life might have been like had I lived with my mother even longer than I did.

17. The Return of the Living Dead (Dan O'Bannon, 1985)

Watched this because RedLetterMedia - a big chunk of the 80s-90s genre movies I watch probably can have their viewing attributed to this channel, thanks guys! This was on a Re:View a while back and I had never watched the film, so I finally got around to it and watched the review afterwards. SPOILER ALERT no spoilers here but if you do watch RLM regularly, don't watch this episode until you watch the film, because this does have a rather surprising (and fun/depressing at the same time) ending. As the guys note, this is not really primarily a comedy, rather a horror film with a fair amount of humor, most of it in the behavior of the punkish dumb kids playing around in the cemetery - one of the girls (Linnea Quigley under a must-get-nude contractual obligation) dancing around totally naked because graveyards get her hot, and some of the early dialogue between medical supply warehouse employees Frank and Freddy (James Karen and Thom Matthews). But mostly this is a reasonably scary and gory zombie apocalypse film in which our bumbling medical-supply guys accidentally set off a chain reaction that results in the dead arising in a large graveyard in Louisville, KY, and ultimately a government response. It's a solid, fun film and if I liked zombie films more I'd probably love it, as it is...it's fine. BRAINS!!!

18. Hot Shots! Part Deux (Jim Abrahams, 1993)

The ineveitable sequel, given that the first film was a huge hit, grossing 7x it's budget. This one is mostly a parody of Rambo but like the first film it doesn't adhere too closely to imitating that one film, and there are a great many other specific film references here, mostly done pretty well and none better than the perfect way they managed to bring in Martin Sheen (father of star Charlie) to reference both Apocalypse Now and Wall Street at the same time in the same shot. There's also a body count total that references Robocop and Total Recall and a sex scene that according to IMDb is a parody of one in No Way Out - but I think there are similar sequences in films like 9 1/2 Weeks; both this film and the previous one have moments where they go into the erotic-thriller joke mode. Pretty much on the level of the previous film. Now I need to go back and re-watch Police Squad and some of the earlier ZAZ stuff that I haven't seen in forever.

19. Lonesome Cowboys (Andy Warhol, 1968)

I'm just going to echo what was said above - this is dull stuff, with sound so poor that very little can be understood in some scenes, not that the seemingly improvised nearly stream-of-consciousness dialogue is of much import. I guess it's a satire on the western on some level, OK, but it's mostly an excuse for lots of beefcake posing and almost a thumbing of the nose at any kind of conventional cinema. Which would be fine if it was cinematically interesting at all, and apart from a kind of neat use of jump cuts from time to time, it just isn't. Was Andy Warhol a "troll" as flavo suggests? I dunno. I've liked a couple of his shorts, found the two feature-length films I've seen (this and Vinyl) fairly unbearable and tedious. I'm all in favor of shattering norms and showing us other sides of the world, of cinema, and I don't even necessarily dislike amateurism, but Warhol's world is an incredibly shallow, no, surface-oriented one, all cute guys strutting and fretting in cowboy fashions, a tale told by a poser, signifying nothing.

20. Viva Maria! (Louis Malle, 1965)
21. Les pétroleuses / Frenchie King (Christian-Jacque, 1971)

Many people don't know this, but before Brigitte Bardot made headlines as an animal-rights activist and racist supporter of fascists and authoritarians, she was an actress, singer and sex symbol. True story! And she made three westerns and I just happened to watch them all in a row, an experience I don't really strongly recommend to anyone. Two are comedies, so those I present you here for your edification. You can read about Shalako on the western challenge thread.

Viva Maria! was, along with the Warhol western above, one of the last two films on the BFI list for me to see...Platinum now, baby. And you know, when the last couple of films you see on a list suck, you wonder if it was worth it - but then you're glad it's all done at least. This story of a French actress (Jeanne Moreau) and a French-Irish terrorist (Bardot) joining together first to do a travelling cabaret act in central America in the early days of last century, then transforming into revolutionaries, feels like Pontecorvo's Queimada if it had been written and directed by the creative team behind Hogan's Heroes. It doesn't start out so bad but it's just such a fucking stupid failed farce at the end that I couldn't wait for it to end. I've generally liked Malle's films, and I'm sure he was trying to do something interesting and different here - and he does succeed sometimes with weird genre mash-ups like Black Moon a decade later - but for me at least this was just an unholy mess.

Les pétroleuses is a little better - but not much - probably because it's not trying so hard to do anything other than be a sexy, silly farce. Claudia Cardinale is the one sister and head of a family with four brothers who matches up against Brigitte Bardot and her four sisters (or are they just friends? wasn't clear, didn't care) for control of a property containing lots of oil. It takes place in a small town in Texas that was settled by the French, thus explaining why everybody (except Michael J. Pollard in an amusing turn as the sheriff) speaks French. Really just an excuse to see lots of hot European babes frolic around in their petticoats and dresses (hey, this is strictly PG territory except for one very brief shot) for an hour and a half, but that's enough to make it almost watchable.

134. Bratz (2007) Bonus: Splat
So I watched this one in preparation for listening to the episode of How Did This Get Made about it (HDTGM and Rifftrax have gotten me to watch some really terrible movies over the years...), and I was honestly amazed at how awful it was. I thought it was going to be typical kid movie terrible but it was honestly on a whole other level. Early in the movie when it introduces the Hispanic girl of the group (which is comprised of course of the perfect ethnically diverse ratio) at her house full of random relatives using Spanish only for the most common phrases like 'hola' with a FUCKING MARIACHI BAND PLAYING IN HER KITCHEN, I thought 'yea, this movie is a whole other level of stupid...' Naturally the Asian member of the group is super smart. In some weird overly conscious subversion of stereotypes, they make the white girl good at sports and super poor with the black girl being a super popular cheerleader. The movie has this incredibly weird moral about how cliques are bad yet slathers on stereotypes constantly. It's so bizarre. Here's a screenshot of the pie fight that tops off a "wacky" food fight fairly early in the movie:

17. Charlie Chan in Egypt (1935) * 72 min.
18. Charlie Chan in Shanghai (1935) * 71 min.

I don't understand Stepin Fetchit. I get the white supremacy part, but did he actually make audiences laugh anywhere? His scenes in Charlie Chan in Egypt make this relatively short film seem interminable. Keye Luke in Charlie Chan in Shanghai, on the other hand, gets to do comedy and action, and his performance here and in Charlie Chan in Paris suggest that he might have been a star in a later era.

I don't really get Stepin Fetchit either, exactly, beyond the white supremacist desires to show black=stupid, lazy. There are other black actors from this period who are equally, or nearly as stereotypical but at least manage to be funny - Mantan Moreland, who's in some Chan films also, is the best example. He had to play the superstitious angle, the guy whose eyes would bug out when he thought there might be a ghost, but he is allowed to be shown as having some brains and a fairly quick wit sometimes, and his "indefinite talk" or "incomplete sentence" routine with Ben Carter, which was a vaudeville routine and appears in at least two Chan films, is fucking hilarious if you ask me -

And Chan himself gets involved near the end of this clip.

14. Johnny Tanggo Rides Again (1983, Ricky Santiago) - 3/10
--- Redford White before his hair turned white. This one tries to blend a little horror with silly comedy, and that doesn't work all that well. After a decent start, there is a long stretch which is just dull. Sure, the drive with the stiff made it a little more fun toward the end, but besides both White and Panchito doing dual parts, with a bakla Panchito being my favorite bit, this was mostly a disappointment.

15. Scoob! (2020, Tony Cervone) 4/10
--- I'm always down for some Scooby-Doo. A little bit different compared to the usual formula. I'll accept that, but it did feel a little bit more forced than usual. Especially the visual modernization, which didn't fit the characters I grew up with. What they did to Captain Caveman to make him relevant was the biggest offender. That reminded me of that old "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show" Simpsons episode. They basically Poochied Captain Caveman. As uncool as it sounds.

16. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012, Brad Peyton) - 5/10
--- My wife wanted to watch "The Rock and the Giant Lizard". Thankfully that described the poster perfectly, so I was able to track it down easily. A fun family adventure which boarded into the silly more than necessary, but that worked well for the younger in the family. We had a good time with Journey 2.

17. The Mall, the Merrier! (2019, Barry Gonzalez) - 3/10
--- I keep hoping Vice Ganda's annual blockbuster will get better, but this is the same outlandish mess they always are. I'll keep claiming Vice is funnier during any average 5-minutes of his/her daily variety show Showtime than in these annual 2-hour all-out cinema comedies. It's so frustrating. It's like they turn it up so many levels that it defuses what's comedy. In a way the comedy becomes so bizarre that it's grotesquely attractive.

18. The Gentlemen (2019, Guy Ritchie) - 6/10
--- The Gentlemen (2019) works if you take it as a parody of a Guy Ritchie.

19. Si Ayala at si Zobel (1994, Junn P. Cabreira) - 3/10
--- Poor people inheriting millions and this was all they managed to make out of that scenario? Sure, there was Babalu being Babalu, but that wasn't enough for me to enjoy this random choice as much as I wanted.

20. Norske byggeklosser [Opportunity Knocks] (2018, Arild Fröhlich) - 3/10
--- The original comedy classic from 1972 also had it's lame bits, but at least it wasn't as forced as this modern remake with Atle Antonsen doing a Rolv Wesenlund and filling out half the cast list. Comedy can be done better than this.

135. Suburban Gothic (2014)
I liked this one actually. While the actual plot involving a ghost wanting a necklace back is fairly slight, the movie is carried by the sarcastic humor and dialogue from the two leads: Matthew Gray Gubler playing Raymond, a sort of metrosexual college boy who moves back home in a desperate job search, and Kat Dennings as the former classmate and now bartender who's directionless life is injected with a little bit of life when Raymond comes in talking about paranormal experiences and hauntings. Naturally Ray Wise's presence as Raymond's dad is appreciated as well even if he's primarily just relegated to overbearing asshole the whole time.

136. Carry On... Up the Khyber (1968)
Eh, it's another Carry On movie... This time we find the gang playing characters in British occupied India, and as one would expect of the Carry On fellas, there's lots of sexual innuendoand silliness to be had. The film also seems to really dig into satirizing the British sense of manners and pride (best typified by characters like Alec Guinness in Bridge on the River Kwai) in the bluntest ways possible. I've yet to really see a Carry On movie that I've loved and after watching several of them, it's seeming pretty unlikely I ever will.

137. Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)
This sequel to the Jumanji reboot Welcome to the Jungle from a few years ago at times definitely feels like a bit of a rehash at times, particularly in the third act. Also as in the previous entry, much of the humor is derived from actors like The Rock and Jack Black doing impersonations of radically different personality types. Honestly The Rock doing Danny Devito, Kevin Hart doing Danny Glover and Jack Black as the black high school jock all worked for me pretty decently, and it looked like it was probably fun to film. Certainly not a terrible movie, but not very essential either.

139. Leslie Nielson's Bad Golf My Way (1994)
I'm honestly not sure what led me to watch this fairly obscure direct-to-video and still only on VHS goofy Leslie Nielson flick. Maybe it was the vague memories I had of seeing late night commercials advertising it back when I was a wee lad of 13 years old. Regardless, my general conclusion is... honestly it's ok. This is definitely not up there with the likes of Airplane! or The Naked Gun but Nielson actually is occasionally amusing as a bad golfer who challenges a hot shot pro who's also a smug asshole to a round and makes it a point to troll him as much as possible with every hole. It's kind of dumb in places but you could certainly do a lot worse.

13. George Carlin: You Are All Diseased (1999) 1.5/10
Except for saying he prays to Joe Pesci, this was horrible. Joking about terrorist attacks and shootings in churches, raping teenagers, and hating children, and NOT WASHING HIS HANDS EVEN AFTER GOING TO THE BATHROOM, I think I’m done with George Carlin. Which is sad, because I saw some funny clips on YouTube and was eager to check out his comedy specials.

48. Jerry Seinfeld: 23 Hours to Kill (2020) 7/10
BONUS: It Could Happen To You
Watch a comedy that features a situation that actually happened to you in real life and provide details of what happened in both movie and reality.
Jerry Seinfeld talks about being THAT person who didn’t pick up his trash and also didn’t put it in the trash can after the movie. All I have to say is that I used to work in a movie theater and I was the OTHER person who had to clean up afterward (sometimes). If it was like a premiere or full house, well, it got me wondering who were these people that didn’t clean up after themselves and now I know…. (this doesn’t make me hate Seinfeld, but it did make him seem a tad out of touch, being a millionaire and me, being a relatively normal person).
49. W. Kamau Bell: Private School Negro (2018) 8/10 Heard positive things about this one and added it to my watchlist. Was not disappointed.

18. Perdrix, by Erwan Le Duc (2018) 8/10

One of France's best comedies from last year... Fun, original, and sweet too.

19. A batch of Laurel & Hardy short films
- Laughing Gravy, by James W. Horne (1930) 5/10 Starts with good slapstick, ends strangely with artificial drama...
- Helpmates, by James Parrott (1932) 6/10 Funny at times, but it relies heavily on massive destruction, which becomes repetitive...
- Towed in a Hole, by George Mashall (1932) 7/10 Classic Laurel & Hardy fun. Marshall has a great sense of pacing...
- Dirty Work, by Lloyd French (1933) 7,5/10 The best of the bunch, with other fun characters and various situations...

20. National Lampoon's Vacation, by Harold Ramis (1983) 7/10

Many gags don't work well today, but the trip and characters remain enjoyable...

21. On peut toujours rêver, by Pierre Richard (1991) 4/10

That's a terrible film, I probably rate it too high because I'm fond of Richard...

22. Heller in Pink Tights, by George Cukor (1960) 7,5/10

23. Poveri ma belli, by Dino Risi (1957) 8/10

What if Jesse James had a lookalike and was not actually shot by The Coward Robert Ford? This B-western attempts to answer this question that few probably ever thought to ask, and it is reasonably engaging, rather cleverly chalking up Jesse's dual reputations (as a bad criminal and modern day Robin Hood) to the fact that it was always two different persons, with one set to slander the other's reputation. Way too much comedy distracts from this tho.

Another OP update on this dreary Memorial Day for the folks in the US. If there are any Muslims here, then have a happy Eid al-Fitr. For everyone else, don't forget to bring a towel because it's TOWEL DAY in tribute to Douglas Adams.

Oh and here's a scene featuring a towel (much to Fletch's chagrine) in the Chevy Chase vehicle Fletch:

As per Jesse James at Bay, this is a film that gives Roy Rogers a real chance to act with little in the way of music and song; the story though is nowhere near as dynamic as that revisionist tale. There is an intense crooked card game, but some romancing and a surrogate brother angle slow down the proceedings; the comedy also feels very strange and inconsistent, delightful as Gabby Hayes is. As the antagonist of the tale, Bob Steele is good too.

28. the ugly dachshund (1966) - I live action Disney movie from the sixties. This is a version of the ugly duckling tale where a Great Dane is raised alongside Dachshunds. There was little overarching plot, sut a lot of very cliched slapstick. The two main characters were insufferable, a pushover husband and a nagging wife. I really did not enjoy anything about this film.

12-15. P'tit Quinquin (2014)
A strong contender for the worst thing I have seen or will see in 2020. What an unpleasant experience. Are there laughs? Sure, a couple. It has the weirdest funeral scene I've ever seen, so that's something if you don't mind the other 3+ hours of the miniseries. The protagonists are a racist pre-teen brat and the worst kind of small-town cop--an incompetent, petty tyrant. The plot revolves around a series of weird murders, none of which spark any urgency for the characters. What was the point of all this? That this spot in France is hell, something suggested a few times by the dialogue? Maybe. A better question is why should I care? At this point, I'm just angry with myself for finishing it.

30. The Circus (1928) - This was one of the few Charlie Chaplin movies that I have not seen. I was surprised at how one that flew under my radar could have so many great sequences. It is not quite as emotionally impactful as the great dictator or as humorous as modern times, but still a solid film in Chaplin's filmography.

140. Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019)
While the story arc itself for this one (woman decides to train for the NYC marathon to turn her life around) is pretty predictable, the film is buoyed by Jillian Bell's great comedic presence. In fact, she's usually one of the funniest parts of whatever she happens to be in, so it's nice to see her taking a starring vehicle for once. I liked it well enough and despite the typical beats, it remains pretty engaging as a triumph of the human spirit sort of story.

141. Interstate 60: Episodes of the Road (2002)
This oddball magical realism flick from Bob Gale (Robert Zemeckis' erstwhile writing partner for something like 15 years or so, most famously co-writer on the Back to the Future movies) hit that sweet spot for me. It's relentlessly quirky, very affable and while it rarely makes sense, is still rooted enough in reality that it's very easy to follow. James Marsden plays a laid back young guy who's in search of an elusive woman he keeps seeing on billboards (played by Amy Smart) after being sent on a quest of sorts by Christopher Lloyd who asks him to deliver a package. This sets in motion a bizarre road trip with a great Gary Oldman in tow as a weird guy with a monkey pipe who grants people wishes. This is the kind of movie you just need to sit back, relax and let wash over you.

142d. Pas de C4 pour Daniel Daniel (1987)
142e. Me la debes a.k.a. You Owe Me One (2002)
A group of random shorts... The first two were on a "Pair of Shorts starring Lewis Black" DVD. Sidesplitters was mildly amusing as a mockumentary about a forgotten comedy duo (Black and Jim Norton) that basically seemed to generally be like Laurel & Hardy but much more vulgar. The Gynecologists on the other hand was just relentlessly unfunny with Black and Norton both in smaller side roles. Peter's To-Do List was a silly little prequel short to the most recent Spider-man film involving Peter tying up various loose ends before his European trip. It was pretty slight but mildly fun for fans of the movie. The last two were extras on a couple of Criterion movies, the first on Man Bites Dog (a very early student film from the same director) and Y Tu Mama Tambien (from the writer of the main film, Cuaron's brother).

143. Banchikwang a.k.a. The Foul King (2000)
I actually thought it was fairly interesting watching this early Kim Jee-woon (The Good The Bad The Weird, I Saw the Devil, Tale of Two Sisters) film in how similar in themes it was to The Art of Self-Defense. Both involving a downtrodden office drone who finally after one attack too many seeks out a means of self-defense. In the case of The Foul King, our lead wants to learn how to wrestle, seemingly primarily so he can learn how to break the headlocks that his asshole boss puts him in. This sets off his dryly comic journey into the world of amateur wrestling. While this is certainly not on the level of many of Kim Jee-woon's later films, it's still pretty entertaining even if it does peter out a little in the third act.

Image
144. Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978)
This 5th Pink Panther film finds Clouseau faking his own death in order to go undercover to investigate who attempted to kill him. Honestly it's all feeling pretty tired by this point. Many of the gags I feel I've seen before. Clouseau's disguises seem to get even more ridiculous. In general, the plot just doesn't hold together as well as some previous films in the series like A Shot in the Dark or even the previous entry Pink Panther Strikes Again.

Image
145. Au poste! (2018)
I had watched this one last week but forgot to check it off. Au Poste! starts as an odd police procedural with a cop grilling a potential suspect about a a series of deaths that happened to occur around him with the suspect coming off pretty hapless. Before long the situation starts to grow progressively worse for the defendant as he starts to detail each of the deaths he claims he was only incidentally involved with due to a series of terrible coincidences and problems start to arise in the station itself. Knowing this was from Quentin Dupieux (director of the telekinetic tire movie Rubber and other bizarre artifacts like Realite and Wrong) I fully expected the movie to go off the rails at some point. The most surprising thing about it was just how long it took actually. I would go so far as to say this is probably Dupieux's most restrained movie keeping in mind who we're talking about here though. By the end, the movie will have definitely taken some odd turns that'd leave you thinking 'what the hell is going on'.

Bonus challenge:Comedy Inception (Joe Bob Brigg's Last Drive-In.)

Hi all, hyped up after years reading reviews calling it a classic, and hearing the praise Jay from RLM & Joe Bob, the first thing which came to mind as the credits rolled was "Is that it?" The first rather dry hour had little feeling of building up to a big pay-off, that fizzled out far too quickly.

Deciding to expand from only being a producer after Disney sacked him and Stuart Gordon from Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989) after Gordon got very sick in Mexico, debut co-writer/(with Woody Keith, Rick Fry and a un-credited Dan O'Bannon)director Brian Yuzna displays the impact of having worked with Gordon in the tasty set-piece, as Yuzna & cinematographer Rick Fichter chew on a Horror Comedy atmosphere, mashing great OTT gross-out practical special effects by Screaming Mad George with a thick red tint across the lips of the rich. Taking a hour before reaching the dinner table,Yuzna scatters eye-catching moments of wacky comedic Body-Horror, but is disappointingly unable to slot them smoothly into the entire body of the flick, due to Yuzna giving Billy’s search to find out what his family is up to with a casualness which lacks a sense of building tension, or a sinking into the fantastical, that Yuzna was aiming for.

Working at the time on a script with Dan O'Bannon,of which elements Yuzna transferred into the original screenplay Rick Fry and Woody Keith served up,the writers slice a ripe Horror satire of the discreet charms of the bourgeoisie being a munch on the poor, that bites into them getting a thirst on eating themselves in order to be at the top of the food chain. Holding Billy as a outsider to the family secret, the writers fail to bring terror to the discovery, partly due to the bourgeoisie being kept detached, draining chances for them to place personal pressure on Billy, and also from lacking to give the oddly causal Billy the needed shots of dread, over discovering a secret society.
