13. George Carlin: You Are All Diseased (1999) 1.5/10
Except for saying he prays to Joe Pesci, this was horrible. Joking about terrorist attacks and shootings in churches, raping teenagers, and hating children, and NOT WASHING HIS HANDS EVEN AFTER GOING TO THE BATHROOM, I think I’m done with George Carlin. Which is sad, because I saw some funny clips on YouTube and was eager to check out his comedy specials.

63. The Electric Horseman (1979 / Sydney Pollack) FTV 8/10 {121 m.}
64. San Fernando Valley (1944 / John English) FTV 8/10 {74 m.}
65. Gisaengchung; aka: Parasite (2019 / Bong Joon Ho) FTV 8+/10 {132 m. }

I also watched The Carson City Kid and Home in Oklahoma - two more Roy Rogers westerns that are mis-tagged as comedy on IMDb so i am not counting them here. San Fernando Valley, on the other hand, was not tagged as a comedy but it certainly is. The comedy flows throughout this one with some of the highlights in the spoiler below:
SpoilerShow
Roy and Dale get arrested for arguing in the street during a celebration and then the sheriff loses his keys to the paddy wagon, Dales fires all the men working her ranch and replaces them with chorus girls, there's a series of comic vignettes with a klepto dog, Roy and his sidekick get hired on as cooks for the ranch even though they have no experience in the kitchen, and there are a number of comic songs. There's even a comedy bit in the climax and the entire musical finale is a comic scene.

26. The Invention of Lying (Ricky Gervais, Matthew Robinson-2009) Scavenger Hunt: It Could Happen To You

There's a section in this movie, before the love story kicks in where Ricky Gervais' character accidentally invents religion. It kinda mirrors how I became disillusioned with religion. It started with the question of "hey, how do we know the people that wrote this book (the bible) aren't lying?" No one could ever offer any reassurances, instead I was just pressured to accept and believe. It began my journey towards atheism.

27. Al este des oeste (Mariano Ozores-1984) Scavenger Hunt: Triple Threat

Pretty good. It's like a Spanish Three Amigos. I forget who watched this earlier in the month, but thanks!

86. Shag (1989) Bonus: Skiing, Camping and Swimming Is Partying
87. Gorp (1980) Bonus: Skiing, Camping and Swimming Is Partying
88. Copper Mountain (1983) Bonus: Skiing, Camping and Swimming Is Partying
Shag involves a bunch of friends played by the likes of Phoebe Cates cruisin' around Myrtle Beach in 1963 having a final bachelorette weekend for their friend getting married. It's a pretty solid movie that reminds me of a cross between a John Hughes film and American Graffiti. Gorp on the other hand is a supremely stupid and maniacally wacky summer camp raunch fest where somebody apparently watched Meatballs and Animal House back to back and just said, 'hey, let's make that but Jewish'. It's pretty relentlessly dumb with young folks who would go on to better things like Dennis Quaid, Rosanna Arquette and Fran Drescher as about the only notable thing related to it. And YET, Copper Mountain manages to be even worse. Alan Thicke and Jim Carrey who are buds going to a ski resort for the weekend. Thicke thinks he's a hotshot skier who relentlessly makes fun of a fat bartender who he challenges to a ski-off for a spot in a pro tournament or something. GUESS WHAT HAPPENS!? Oh, and Jim Carrey doesn't ski mostly. He just goes around doing annoying impressions like Sammy Davis Jr. trying to impress ladies and failing. Oh and I hope you like Ronnie Hawkins and Rita Coolidge cuz seriously nearly half the movie is padded with badly mic'ed performances by them. Just awful.

Image
89. Qian Ren Gong Lue a.k.a. The Ex-Files (2014)
A couple is constantly hounded by sins of ex-girlfriend/boyfriend past. It's a pretty mediocre romantic comedy that just felt like a lot of flash with little substance. I didn't care for it too much.

Image
90. Bag Boy Lover Boy (2014)
This was a weird one, as if Jim Hosking (director of The Greasy Strangler) decided to do a loose remake of A Bucket of Blood, the 1959 Corman cheapie. Albert is a weird, gross hot dog vendor who is recruited one day by an eccentric photographer to pose as a model in a series of bizarre and violent imagery. Before long, Albert takes his role too far and is making his own art in the most visceral way he knows how. While I'm still a little out to lunch on how exactly I feel about this one, it was certainly not boring and had some incredibly ghoulish but amusing humor to it.

Image
91. Dave Chappelle: The Bird Revelation (2017)
Man, Dave Chappelle feels like he's just actively courting controversy here. Much of it is still actively funny and brings up some very good and well-nuanced points that some may cherry pick quotes from to use as ammo against while totally missing the point of what he's talking about. He also gets pretty serious toward the end as he starts to get into why he left show business for twelve years. OVerall, I thought it was a very good stand-up that I think some may not really appreciate due to its topically charged subject matter and approach.

92. Men in Black: International (2019)
Meh... I can't even muster up words to describe this bland and forgettable sequel, taking a big step down from the surprisingly decent MIB3.

93. Prova d'orchestra a.k.a. Orchestra Rehearsal (1978)
This almost feels like Fellini doing Bunuel and using absurd surrealist situations as a metaphor for social satire. I actually quite liked this odd flick from a director who I tend to run very hot or cold on, watching the orchestra descend into barbarism and revolt in the face of an abusive conductor.

6. Swiss Army Man (2016)
Well this was really fucking weird. Points for originality, I guess, but definitely not my cup of tea.

7. Death of a Bureaucrat (1966)
High-grade satire. It takes a kitchen-sink approach to the action, utilizing stop-motion animation, surrealist dream sequences (including a very obvious homage to Un Chien Andalou), different frame rates, and so on. Good fun.

Gene Autry has fun playing two separate characters in this comedy that casts him as both a Wild West movie star and a lookalike stuntman, with chaos ensuing when the stuntman is talked into impersonating the star at publicity events. Smiley Burnette is very funny as his fretting producer, constantly nervous that others will catch onto the ruse. Best of all though is all the back lot movie production scenes and shots of the stuntwork being filmed.

This gets off to a quirky start with Dean Martin carrying a small dog, riding a horse with false teeth and everybody saying "something big". The dog and horse ultimately add little plot-wise though, and the repetition of the title soon tires. The plot is icky too as Martin has to find a woman to trade for the gun, though there is some amusement in Martin stopping stagecoaches without robbing them as he searches for a woman, which baffles the authorities.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

OP has been updated again! Hopefully everybody is having fun with both the main challenge and scavenger hunt. If not, perhaps you aren't watching the right comedies? :D

In honor of the passing of the incredibly funny and talented Fred Willard yesterday, today's comedy spotlight will be a bit of his from the Christopher Guest mockumentary Best In Show where Willard plays an odd and at times willfully inappropriate and exceptionally misinformed announcer:

94. Urusei Yatsura 3: Remember My Love (1985)
The third film in the long-running wacky Rumiko Takahashi series Urusei Yatsura about an alien female named Lum who returns to Earth after visiting as a child and befriending a young boy who promises to marry her finds the now adult Ataru transformed into a hippo due to a series of bizarre incidents involving a jealous time-traveling suitor of Lum's. The first two Urusei Yatsura movies were directed by visionary sci-fi director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost In The Shell, Avalon) and, in particular, the second film is considered a classic of anime with it's high concept reality-altering premise. This one is taken over by the less notable Kazuo Yamazaki, primarily probably know for his work on the more serious sci-fi of Wind Named Amnesia and Five Star Stories and feels like it was grasping for the same kind of high concept as the previous movie but came up much more convoluted and unfulfilling.

Image
95. Bean (1997)
My kids have really been into the Mr. Bean animated series lately, so I thought it'd be interesting to see what they thought of some live action Mr. Bean. Honestly, it didn't really hold their attention. Makes sense though. The gags aren't as rapid fire as in the show (either the live action show or animated actually) and the movie fills up a non-trivial amount of time with the neurotic reactions of Peter MacNicol as Bean brings his world collapsing down around him. Still, the movie definitely has some funny bits, usually in the more stand-alone scenes with Bean causing mischief like his increasingly more severe defacing of Whistler's Mother.

Image
96. Young Doctors in Love (1982) Bonus: Imitation Is The Sincerest Form Of Flattery
Here we have the directorial debut of Gary Marshall, man of a thousand rom-coms (Pretty Woman, Princess Diaries, Runaway Bride, Overboard, etc.), doing something a bit different than the formulaic films he'd start churning out soon after the release of this. Young Doctors in Love is certainly an over-the-top parody film in the style of Airplane! and The Naked Gun but setting its sights on soapy medical dramas like General Hospital and St. Elsewhere. Like many films of its type, it takes the shotgun approach to gags, constantly peppering us with the funny. And like many films in this genre, some hits and some doesn't. Honestly, I actually thought this was a pretty good one with a great cast, many from early in their career like Michael McKean as the very serious and overly clinical genius doctor with the terrible bedside manner (hello House), Michael Richards even before UHF as a bumbling mob hitman who ends up doing himself far more harm than the hospitalized mob boss he's hired to take out, Dabney Coleman as the hot shot head surgeon who has his head under a skirt as often as he has a patient under the knife... There's Saul Rubinek, Taylor Negron, Sean Young, the great Harry Dean Stanton! If you like movies like Hot Shots and Space Balls, you'll probably find something to like in here.

I've put the parody comparison in a spoiler tag since the parodied scene is from the end of the De Palma movie Carrie (1976).
Parodying is such sweet sorrowShow
Here's a screenshot from a scene where a doctor flees to his father's grave in disgrace and sees the famous gravestone of Carrie with the arm shooting out like at the end of De Palma's film.

97. That Touch of Mink (1962)
Cary Grant is a rich guy who falls for Doris Day and wants a light dalliance of an affair, but Day's character wants something more. What follows is a sort of battle of wills in who will give in to the other first. Will they spend a hot weekend getaway in Bermuda or end of walking the aisle? Like Wilder's Kiss Me, Stupid that I watched earlier this month, since this one came out in the early '60s, they could get away with a little more adult conversations and situations than they could have just a decade prior, although otherwise, it certainly feels like a pretty conventional rom-com that Grant and Day could make in their sleep. It's fine as a light diversion but it's pretty obvious where it's heading and doesn't really offer much of anything new.

Actually just finished the film series myself just now and the later films are a bit better. They don't try to remain in the footsteps of Oshii, which makes them lighter and more in line with the series. None are as good as Oshii's second film of course, but at least the later ones don't try to be something they're not :)

The first Abbott and Costello film I've seen. I only came upon it by accident after meaning to download the 1956 film of the same name. The duo investigate a Nazi conspiracy secretly operating through public radio broadcasts. Once the plot got going I started to like it more, it was the Warner Bros-esque cartoon violence and stunts that punctuate the story that I liked most though. On the other hand, the shrieking, imbecile antics of Costello often at the centre of the stunts was insufferable, a man trying way too hard to be funny.

15. Idiocracy (Mike Judge / 2006) 6/10
Two present-day volunteers of average intelligence are roped by the military into being frozen in suspended animation for a year, only for them to remain frozen for 500 years and then released into a society that's evolved a far lower average IQ and in which they are now comparative geniuses. It's a film I've always ignored with the vague impression of it being one of those bottom rung Sandleresque affairs, but that's not the case, it's wittier and more serious than that. The laughs come regularly, particularly in the various verbal manglings and malapropisms, and the humour works best when it's recognisable in today's world. The main downside was that the jokes got a little repetitive as it went on and, since the plot is pretty flimsy, when the jokes falter there's not much more to sustain it.
16. Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World (Albert Brooks / 2005) 4/10
Interesting premise: real-life comedian Albert Brooks, playing a fictionalised version of himself, is tasked by the U.S. government with visiting India and Pakistan to compile a report on what makes their citizens laugh. It has some interest as a comment on American foreign policy, unfortunately the execution is poor and it's just not funny. While watching the Woody Allen film after this I was left wondering how much more Allen's deadpan style and wry commentary could've wrought from the scenario.

20. The Delicate Delinquent (1957) - a Jerry Lewis film with a surprisingly touching mentor/mentee relationship between Darren McGavin (a cop) and Jerry Lewis (a young man in trouble with the law). It is one of the more restrained Lewis comedies I've seen and McGavin is excellent as a man pouring himself into helping a kid from a bad neighborhood.

21. The Private Life of Henry the VIII (1933) - this maybe the oldest movie to break the 4th wall. Other than that, I wasn't particularly impressed. It may have been in part to the transfer I watched not being the highest quality.

22. Tragedy Girls (2017) - I liked this one as a pitch-black comedy slasher movie with a twist. It has a pretty cynical outlook on the world and I felt like it tried to breath fresh air into a cliched genre. Sadly, a little of the enjoyment was diminished because I've seen recent similarly toned shows and movies such as Scream Queens. Still fun though.

31. 800 Balas (2002) - 6/10 - SH: Triple Threat

Julián Torralba is a former movie stuntman in Almeria, Spain. He and several of his colleagues, who once made a living in American Westerns shot in Spain, now are reduced to doing stunt shows for minuscule audiences on the decaying set built for those old Westerns.

29. Captain Marvel XXX: An Axel Braun Parody (Axel Braun-2019) Scavenger Hunt: Not How I Remembered

Surprising number of meta criticism of the original material. I don't really know if that's an Axel Braun trademark. He seems to have done a lot of porn parodies.
Here's the porn versions of Carol Danvers and Nick Fury:

OP has been updated! We're in the back half of this riotous romp and that poor Harem Scarem challenge task has still only been completed once.

As alison reminded us earlier, Fred Willard wasn't the only talent lost over the weekend. Here's a bit from Lynn Shelton's Humpday:
Image

If anyone's interested in exploring Lynn Shelton further, several of her films also would count for the mumblecore challenge task if you are looking for additional reasons to watch one.

Four marshals join a travelling show run by a quack selling magic elixir in this western comedy. The plot frequently comes to a standstill four the marshals to perform rope tricks, ventriloquism acts and occasionally sing, but it is all fairly entertaining, especially the lasso work, and Robert McKenzie is delightful as the eccentric salesman running the show, addicted to his own so-called medicine. The ventriloquist dummy has some snappy lines too.

1. The Comedy of Terrors (1964, Jacques Tourneur) : 4.2 - Even the legendary cast with Boris Karloff, Basil Rathbone, Vincent Price and Peter Lorre plus a topnotch director as Tourneur can't save this dud.
2. FM (1978, John A. Alonzo): 5.2 - The idea of a movie about a FM station sticking it to the man is promising, unfortunate the movie doesn't live up to that promise with underdeveloped characters, an underused cast and plot with enormous pacing issues. This is typical example of commercialized counterculture with a rock station, who's idea of revolutionary rockers are musician as Boston, REO Speedwagon, Jimmy Buffet, Linda Ronstadt and The Doobie Brothers.
3. Surf Nazis Must Die (1987, Peter George): 3.0 - This isn't so bad it's good. This is so bad, it's garbage.
4. Otley [Portobello road] (1968, Dick Clement): 6.8 - Otley is homeless grifter, who by mistake gets tangled up in an espionage plot. The movie is filmed in the typical realistic style of British kitchen sink drama, but the plot comes straight out of cheap 60s espionage novels. It's a mix that should clash, but surprisingly works. The realistic film style grounds the convoluted spy plot, while those spy elements keeps it from becoming another serious British new wave drama .It's the dry wry dialogue which produce the most laughs. Tom Courtenay does a fine job as the charismatic title character.
5. Georgy Girl (1966, Silvio Narizzano): 6.5 -Featuring a protagonist who doesn't have the measurement of a model, this touches on interesting subjects as the influence of beauty standards on a girls self-image. The plot tho suffers from the cramping a whole novel into a 90 min movie syndrome with underdeveloped plotlines being replaced too soon by another underdeveloped plotline. In typical swinging 60 London the movies is very frantic. It ends with an ending that can be read as either very problematic confirming old-fashioned gender roles in a very inappropriate relationship or as the successful choice of a self-determining woman securing her future. The absolute main reason to see this is a superb Lynn Redgrave as the vivacious Georgy.
6. Weird Science (1985, John Hughes) : 6.8 - It's pure teenage boy fantasy and the science is absolutely ridiculous, but the movie fully embraces it nonsense which make for an entertaining watch

30. Dora and the Lost City of Gold (James Bobin-2019) Scavenger Hunt: Woah

I liked. They lampshaded their original property in a way that is appealing to the masses. This is probably one of the best possible Dora adaptations.

Drug trip: Dora & two others get exposed to some hallucinatory fungus and we get a cartoon sequence.

31. Betty White: First Lady of Television (Steve Boettcher-2018)

A feel-good remembrance/retrospective of Betty White.

32. Old Dogs (Walt Becker-2009)

Terrible. Just filled with incredibly convoluted setups with predictable punchlines.

66. Norbit (2007 / Brian Robbins) FTV 7/10 {102 m.}
67. A Thousand Words (2012 / Brian Robbins) FTV 6-/10 {91 m.}
68. The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002 / Ron Underwood) FTV 7-/10 {95 m. }
69. Dr. Dolittle 2 (2001 / Steve Carr) FTV 6/10 {87 m. }
70.Undercover Brother (2002 / Malcolm D. Lee) FTV 5/10 {86 m.}

Bonus: Worst of the Worst
I watched 2 Eddie Murphy comedies that are on this list and don't think either deserves it. Norbit definitely made me squirm at times but overall it had a good heart and I ended up laughing out loud several times. Adventures of Pluto Nash is not really funny, but I still had fun watching it and it is always a treat to see Peter Boyle and Randy Quaid do their oddball thing. Both of these were better than the other two Eddie Murphy comedies I watched and not nearly as disappointing as Undercover Brother.

:cheers:

It's a separate IMDB entry from the base film... and it's awful. Better than without the commentary, but the commentary just wasn't funny. A bunch of one-liners only tangentially related to what was on screen, very few of which landed.
