Re: The Official Comedy Challenge of May 2020!

Was only supposed to focus on the Western challenge this month, but this month's become so confusing that I've almost watched as many Comedies as Westerns to cheer myself up, so I might as well throw those in here.

1. Wonder Man (1945, H. Bruce Humberstone) - 6/10
--- Heaps of fun as Danny Kaye doubles himself. Relies too much on reaction scenes and funny faces. Way too much! But other than that, a vibrant comedy full of music and laughs. Also the movie debut of Vera-Ellen.

2. Yolanda and the Thief (1945, Vincente Minnelli) - 6/10
--- Fred Astaire hooks up with relative newcomer Lucille Bremer for a tale of thief and rich girl. A more shady Astaire, and a leading lady there didn't seem to be much chemistry with. But I found the plot fun, and most of all, there was some artistry going on here with that dream sequence!

Doesn't have a "Comedy" label on IMDB, but had other places. But it's listed as "Musical" which in the 30s & 40s was basically a sub-genre for comedy, as at least 90% of musicals where indeed comedies.

3. Ziegfeld Follies (1945, 7 directors) - 7/10
--- Grand tribute to Ziegfeld Follies (1945). It's like a greatest hits remake of what his shows consisted of, like a variety show, and MGM brings in all their big stars to do the numbers. Great for what it was, but this is also an acquired taste. You got to sit through a two hour show that doesn't have any narrative and varying degrees of comic qualities. What's good about it, is that MGM turns up the glamour 100% for this production. And you get such unique pairings as Fred Astaire & Gene Kelly performing together! Judy Garland practically mimicking her own life. And a rare appearance by Fanny Brice, among a ton of other things. Definitely classic Hollywood!

4. Zombies on Broadway (1945, Gordon Douglas) - 5/10
--- Abbott & Costello knock-offs Wally Brown & Alan Carney doing the horror spoof with Bela Lugosi before they did! Not always as funny as it could have been, but there was enough madness going on to appreciate Zombies on Broadway (1945).

5. King of the Rodeo (1929, Henry MacRae) - 4/10
--- Fun-time rodeo western Hoot Gibson. Kinda a messy production, but doesn't stop it from being entertaining combining comedy and action the way it does. This came out in 1929, but only as a silent, which should make it among the last batch of westerns to be produced strictly as a silent picture.

6. Orphan of the Pecos (1937, Sam Katzman) - 2/10
--- One of those boring Tom Tyler westerns...

7. Forged Passport (1939, John H. Auer) - 3/10
--- Under-cooked crime drama with Paul Kelly. Could have been a decent programmer, for it had a decent cast for it and a plot going, but something was missing for it to work. Pretty forgettable.

8. Lego DC: Shazam!: Magic and Monsters (2020, Matt Peters) - 5/10
--- Of the animated releases involving superheroes, the Lego franchise is the best! So thinks this family at least! All gags with a little action thrown in.

9. Tournament (2018, Patricia DiSalvo Viayra) - 3/10
--- Watching this because of my annual Western month, and one of the labels of Tournament (2018) was western. But this is not a western. It's a card battle comedy. But they use these western montages in between rounds to illustrate the duel mentality of the game. The idea for the film is simple and mildly funny, but it plays itself out before we even reach the half-way point.

10. Sudsy Slim Rides Again (2018, G. Logan Dellinger) - 3/10
--- Not exactly a good movie, but you got to appreciate the bizarre and comic way they brought an old wild west outlaw to the modern world.

11. May pulis, may pulis sa ilalim ng tulay (1989, Mike Relon Makiling) - 4/10
--- Family time with a filipino comedy starring "King of Comedy" Dolphy. My God, his films were edited in a random ways at times. Not much of a plot, and more a series of comic skits with less than gifted policemen goofing around. What saved this movie was Panchito, who excelled in this type of goofy setting. One of the best I've seen for his input. Classic funny face comedy.

12. Da Best in da West 2: Da Western Pulis Istori (1996, Danilo Cabreira) - 4/10
--- Dolphy goes the action-comedy route again with Lito Lapid doing a follow-up to the hit 1984 movie Da Best in da West, with a 90s vibe sequel which basically Babalu steals from under them. It was rather boring during the Lapid parts of the film, which clashed greatly with the madcap comedy of Dolphy & Babalu. Thankfully the idiots were in good form making up for the low portions.

13. The Daring Young Man (1942, Frank R. Strayer) - 5/10
--- Of course this has a Nazi-bowling plot. Had to be something weird as it's a Joe E. Brown comedy with him playing dual roles as a stupid man and his own scheming grandma. On top of that it has a fresh Lloyd Bridges as a Nazi spy. The comedy wasn't always great, but overall it was one of the more a enjoyable Joe E. comedies post-Warner Bros.

2. The Band's Visit (2007)
This could have been a perfectly fine culture-clash comedy, but the filmmakers, while gesturing in that direction, don't actually seem much interested in the topic. As a result, though there are a few funny scenes, this movie really drags. Not worth it.

3. The Green Hornet (2011)
Well, this just sucked.

Hi all,about a year ago I tried to play Arrow's Porky's Blu on my PS3. A few minutes in,it just paused. Turning it on/off,the PS3 made a few beeping sounds,then died! Since having gotten a replacement,I finally watched it.

FTV:7: Porky's (1981) 5.

Image

Put together over 15 years from a composite of incidents either he or his friends experienced, the screenplay by writer/director Bob Clark keeps the ragtag origins visible, with the shift from the guys getting on the wrong side of Porky, to the lads eyeing ladies in the shower, coming across as disconnected from each other, due to the pick up and drop state is in when focus moves to the other one. Whilst going for gags of the guys failing to get lucky, the most successful jokes are ones where Clark brings heart to the teen Comedy genre, reaching a peak in the mad-cap dash final of the students getting their own back at Porky.

Becoming a unexpected smash hit, director Bob Clark reunites with regular cinematographer Reginald H. Morris offering a teasing level of skin for the teen crowd, mixed with mildly gross-out Comedy that keeps the centre-piece shower scene still standing proud. Highlighted in Arrow’s very good transfer, Bob Clark places the gross out jokes in a sweet 50’s setting, where grainy bright red beams over the guys getting up to drunken mischief, and teaming up to get revenge on Porky.

55. Boot and Saddles (1937 / Joseph Kane) FTV 7+/10 {58 m. }
56. Annie Get Your Gun (1950 / George Sidney, Busby Berkeley) FTV 8-/10 {107 m. }
57. The Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend (1949 / Preston Sturges) 6/10 {77 m. }
58. Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019 / Quentin Tarantino) FTV 8-/10 {161 m. }

Boots and Saddles is not tagged as a comedy on IMDb but the majority of the film is played for laughs. Smiley "Frog" Burnett features in the comedy prominently, but even Gene Autry has a big role in the ongoing jokes - most of which involve mistaken identity or just flat-out mistakes. I've noted some of the scenes in the spoiler below:
SpoilerShow
Frog "practices" on a bugle he finds in a tent outside an army fort and send the entire calvary galloping away by mistake, Frog gets mistaken for a new recruit and ends up in uniform against his will, he then follows orders from a parrot and ends up on the wrong end of the firing range, Gene is tricked into thinking that the commander of the fort is deaf and keeps shouting at him so the commander begins to assume that Gene is deaf, and Frog even sings a couple of comic ditties. And that's just some of the highlighted high-larity.

This has a decent idea, like a reversal of the notion of a man marrying a woman for her good looks, but the film does not have a lot to offer beyond the basic notion. Jack Nicholson is his usual slightly eccentric self and while Mary Steenburgen holds her own well (as a woman marrying Nicholson only for manual labour), the film is ultimately only really carried through by the question of whether or not the pair will eventually learn to love one another.

The plot here is really complex, involving a framed good guy, an arranged marriage to a landowner, a female reporter volunteering as the bride to get a juicy news scoop and John Carradine plotting to murder the landowner once he is married since he cannot legally sell his land but a potential widow could. Whew! Amid all this, Carradine receives far too little screen time, but he is as solid as ever while the film avoids being bogged down by songs.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

83. Funny Lady (1975)
I can safely say that when watching Funny Girl, I never thought "oh, please give me over two hours more of this please!"

Image
84. Kinky Boots (2005)
Coming off the heels (no pun intended) of Calendar Girls and Full Monty, we have another blue collar-gets-sassy UK story, this one involving a shoe manufacturer who teams up with a drag queen to produce gaudy footwear in order to save his business. It's mildly amusing in places but pretty predictable. Although I can definitely see how this was adapted into a Broadway musical.

Image
85. Mother (1996)
Albert Brooks plays a neurotic but popular writer suffering from writers' block and a string of failed relationships that he believes is rooted in the relationship with his mother. So he comes up with the absurd idea of moving back home with his mom to get to know her better and try to find the root of his issues. This does have some funny dialogue and situations as one would expect from Brooks, but it feels a little aimless with an ending that wraps things up a little too quickly. The subplot involving his other, overly-clingy brother also doesn't really gel very well for me. Still, it's solid for fans of Albert Brooks.

4. Sunshine Cleaning (2008)
A decent dramedy, though the dramatic parts in the final third falter. Other than that, an enjoyable story, solid actors, and some funny moments.

5. Metropolitan (1990)
Well, this is a bizarre movie. Kind of reminds me of Kicking and Screaming (Baumbach, not Ferrell), though funnier and more coherent. Among the problems are acting so wooden that it seems stolen from a Bresson movie, along with bizarre editing that includes very abrupt cutting between scenes. But this is mostly a script-based movie, and on this note I have some insight because for high school I attended a New York private school (I was identified as an outsider within the first week when I didn't know what the Hamptons were). And though I never hung out with a debutante crowd, I certainly saw the weird, stuck-up world of New York rich/mega-rich kids. My experience came a decade after this movie, so there's a time gap, but I can definitely say I never encountered anyone remotely like the people in this movie. And that's the main problem. In order to satirize this social set (and there are some very funny lines), the filmmaker creates caricatures that are too far from reality for the satire to work. The characters behave like they're in some sort of 1950s time warp. The only thing they have in common with the private school milieu I knew is the snobbery.

An odd little film that traverses a variety of genres. As a mystery movie, it does not really work. The sci-fi angle with how the crooks here are causing planes to crash is interesting though; same goes for the crime elements like the crooks communicating in code via a children's radio program broadcast. There is also a lot of mood-destroying comedy though (deafness played for laughs) and then the mounties randomly break into song at jarring points.

FTV:8:Welcome Mr. Marshall! (1953) (Spain.)10.

Image

Ordered by the Franco-era censors to cut a scene from his feature film debut of a school teacher dreaming of meeting a American due to it being deemed “Erotic”, co-writer/(with Juan Antonio Bardem) directing auteur Luis García Berlanga & cinematographer Manuel Berenguer go into town with a wickedly sly satire on the Marshall Plan. Dissecting the town with dissolves mapping out parallel action sequence shots (a recurring motif of Berlanga) that bring the place to life, Berlanga draws a hilarious animated atmosphere, painting Fernando Rey’s dead-pan narration moving at a Screwball-Comedy speed, which spins the whip-pans onto each locals attempt to present a fantasy version of the town in order to impress the Americans.

Bringing the dream crashing down to earth with a very funny bitter punch-line,Berlanga sets up the gag with ultra-stylised dips into absurdest surrealism,entering the dreams of the locals with tracking shots circling the fantastical level the town is hyping the arrival of the Americans to.Whilst playwright Miguel Mihura was only given credit to give the title a prestige image (Mihura did not work on the movie),the screenplay by Berlanga and Bardem paint the town with genuine prestige from their incredibly witty script, via the writers drilling into the Marshall Plan allowing the US to become more involved in Europe, from the locals of the impoverished Castilian town wanting to be the best in show for a delegation of visiting Americans, by spending every penny they have ,in the hope that the false version of the town they present won’t leave them empty handed,but gain wealthy benefactors,as they welcome Mr. Marshall.

The humour is pretty hit-and-miss here with some particularly unfunny tooth pulling on a mobile stagecoach (with expectedly unpleasant results; see above), yet also some amusing bits and pieces, like pushing their employer's bride out of an open window to stop the ceremony from going ahead. The film never quite gets the balance right between romantic comedy and serious drama though (torturing of Amerindians for gold often takes a backseat).

While perhaps best known nowadays for playing the exorcist with a whip in the cult hit The Dark Power, Lash La Rue was popular way back for his whip stunts in budget westerns like this. His whip work is impressive here, yet we only get to see him use it twice, with much of the film disappointingly relying on gunplay. The best aspect of the film in any case is not La Rue but rather Al St. John as a goofy sheriff with a knack for clever diversions.

This not an especially well paced affair with the film too often taking a break from the feuding (and mischief between clans) for Tex Ritter to belt out a tune or two. The film is at least a little eerie to begin with though as the trio carefully walk through the seeming ghost town; there is also an impressive sequence towards the end in which Ritter and his two overly goofy companions manage to scare a superstitious Ernie Adams into spilling the beans.

You should definitely check out Edward Penishands next given how impressed you were with this one.

Also where did you find it? Every time I've looked for it, I end up coming across a different newer movie with the same title (that's also an adult film) starring a Marco Duato.

OP has been updated again, folks. Please check your totals for errors.

Also we've had a handful of new challengers join in the last couple of days, so welcome to PUNQ, frbrown and Melvelet. May your laughs grow increasingly more boistrous!

Just a quick note on the Bonus Challenge. We're about halfway through the month now so if you're aiming to complete the challenge, a good barometer of your progress would be whether you're in that neighborhood of 15 challenge tasks completed at this point. Also consider giving some anime, screwball comedies or movies with a personal touch to them some love since those three challenge tasks are still at the bottom with only person having completed each.

Today I leave you with a sampling of the dark humor at play in the wonderful dramedy Harold & Maude. Here Harold stages another in a series of fake suicides as a desperate ploy for attention:

19. Yesterday Today and Tomorrow (1963) - an Italian comedy of three vignettes featuring Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren in three different roles each. The length and entertainment of each vignette swung wildly. Overall, I felt like the movie was too long but it had some redeeming qualities. There is a running gag involving a rolls royce that comes across quite well and the movie climaxes with a very iconic striptease from Lauren.
