13. George Carlin: You Are All Diseased (1999) 1.5/10
Except for saying he prays to Joe Pesci, this was horrible. Joking about terrorist attacks and shootings in churches, raping teenagers, and hating children, and NOT WASHING HIS HANDS EVEN AFTER GOING TO THE BATHROOM, I think I’m done with George Carlin. Which is sad, because I saw some funny clips on YouTube and was eager to check out his comedy specials.

From one John Cusack comedy to the next:

Best MedicineShow
1. West and Soda (1965)
2. Stuber (2019)
3. 3 Ninjas (1992)
4. What Men Want (2019)
5. The Cocoanuts (1929)
6. The Sure Thing (1985)

7. Better Off Dead (1985)

Image

An energetic comedy that manages to be vibrant and zany despite a dark subject. The plot is highly episodic and ultimately more focused on the anxieties in the protagonist's life than his suicide attempts. In fact, there is a non-sequitur vibe to much of the movie as eerie paperboys (see above), drag racers and high school bullies all come and go, which makes everything feel nicely spontaneous; a nose signals conversation is simply hilarious.

9. Louis C.K. Oh My God (2013) - An older standup special by Louis. As usual he delivers amazing jokes delving into some dark subject matter.

10. Chris D'Elia Incorrigible (2015) - Going off the strength of his "No Pain" special, I gave one of his older specials a chance. While it was still funny, it didn't feel as polished as his 2020 special. Would still recommend.

OP updated! Given my current track record, I probably screwed something up, so let me know what it is. :)

I leave you today with a scene from, in my opinion, the funniest movie mocking Nazis ever made, Ernst Lubitsch's To Be or Not To Be (1942):

35. Louis C.K.: Live at the Comedy Store (2015)
As with most Louis C.K. stand-ups, this one has some really funny stuff in it. I can't really explain why but I really cracked up especially at his random little aside about the two babies on the plane. "I'm the pilot baby and this is... the other...baby."

Image
36. Klovn: The Movie a.k.a. Klown (2010) Bonus: Splooge
This gross out comedy based on a TV series from Denmark was pretty amusing, pitched somewhere between Lars Von Trier and Bad Santa. For the bonus task, at a point fairly early in the film, Frank sneaks into their bedroom to give his wife a bit of a wake-up call, not realizing his mother-in-law is sleeping in their bed.

37. Central Intelligence (2016)
Here we have a breezy, Hollywood action comedy that's highly predictable but still manages to entertain despite that, mostly off the charms of The Rock. Kevin Hart is mostly just the straight man here, not really offering much other than constantly being annoyed and panicked at the situations he's been thrust into.

Image
38. Tant qu'on a la santé a.k.a. As Long As You Have Your Health (1966)
I really enjoyed this one and had some really good laughs at various points in this film that presents anxieties of modern life as a series of four vignettes. I think my favorite gags were the relentless infomercial products in Chapter 2 and the electrified fence dancing scene in Chapter 4. I was cracking up constantly at those two sequences. Despite the fractured narrative of this one, I think it may be the Pierre Etaix film I've enjoyed the most.

Image
39. Gyakuten saiban a.k.a. Ace Attorney (2012)
Takashi Miike directs the live action video game adaptation of the first Phoenix Wright game, maintaining much of the wacky situations and characters as well as the very serious central mysteries. It doesn't completely work (some things just don't translate well to live action) but I can't imagine a much better version of this being made. In particular, I like how Miike has visualized displaying the evidence and the heated exchanges between the attorneys. If anything I think it could have benefited from being pitched a little more operatically. At times the exchanges feel a little too understated given the subject matter.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

11. Chris D'Elia Man on Fire (2017) - I decided to go ahead and finish out all the Chris D'Elia standup specials on netflix since I only had one left. Good standup despite a few parts being a little repetitive. Having just recently discovered him, I'll definitely keep an eye on this guy in the future.

12. Battling Butler (1926) - I am a huge Buster Keaton fan. So naturally, I wanted to watch this one. The stunt work is not as extreme as some of his other films but it is still a highly enjoyable comedy about a man pretending to be a world-champion boxer and is forced to continue the charade.

Challenge: ..... Watch a silent comedy and post a screenshot of your favorite physical gag.

You can see where this gag is going right?

Arguably superior to the original, this vibrant remake spends less time on the actual big game and more time on practice and training with the gradual bonding between the characters always feeling very real. While a number of jokes misfire (especially those involving the girly prisoners), the decision to play the story as more of outright comedy than the original works for the better. Adam Sandler also turns in a more serious than usual performance.

Alright folks! Here we are at the end of the work week with the OP updated and ALL bonus challenge tasks completed at least once! The next big milestone will be the first to actually complete the challenge completely. Who will it be!? Max is leading the pack with nearly half of them already done, but Mochard and I aren't too far behind. For the main challenge score, I'm currently in the lead with Traveller, jeroeno and psychotronicbeatnik not far behind. At this point, it's still anyone's game.

As usual, if I messed something up in the totals, let me know.

I leave you today with an example of the wonderful animated comedy of Bill Plympton:

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

9. After the Thin Man (W.S. Van Dyke-1936) Scavenger Hunt: My Gal Thursday (1)
10. Another Thin Man (W.S. Van Dyke-1939) Scavenger Hunt: My Gal Thursday (2)

11. A Talking Cat!?! (David DeCoteau (as Mary Crawford)-2013) Scavenger Hunt: Comedy Inception

Used a Rifftrax commentary and I'm so glad. This movie needed it. Eric Roberts literally phoned in his voice over performance and the live actors are terrible. And there's sooo much padding with constant establishing shots.

12. La Dolce Vita (Federico Fellini-1960) Scavenger Hunt: The Best of the Best

Great movie, but a shitty comedy.
