04. La Communidad, by Alex de la Iglesia (2000) 8/10

Bloody, cruel, and hilarious social satire...
Oh, thanks for reminding me about this Iglesia movie! I forgot it would apply to this challenge, and I've been meaning to watch it. I found the DVD in a pawn shop a while back.

OP updated once again!

Now a moment of zen from the Gen X indie classic Clerks:

6. She's Gotta Have It (1986) - Spike Lee's first movie. The acting is very amateurish, which can be forgiven given that it was an indie film. However, I felt like it was light on comedy and heavy on drama. Just my opinion but this is probably the weakest Spike Lee movie I've seen.

Challenge: Homie Don't Play That Watch a comedy featuring a predominantly black cast.

21. I'll Never Forget What's'isname (1967)
The directorial debut of Death] Wish's Michael Winner find him in a less depressed, intense mood following a man on the verge of a sort of early midlife crisis and his desire to "quit the rat race". The movie has a great opening with a cathartic and destructive pink slip but never really recaptures that early momentum, instead settling into romantic drama mode in the middle of the film. Another particular highlight though is the hilarious ad he creates in an attempt to intentionally antagonize his superiors that ends up going over really well anyway.

Image
22. Top Five (2014) BONUS: Homie Don't Play That
I ended up liking this one quite a bit. Genuinely very funny at times and consistently interesting and engaging, it's a sort of hybrid of Chris Rock's standup and Richard Linklater's Before trilogy with some possibly autobiographical touches added in.

Image
23. Ranma ½: Chûgoku Nekonron daikessen! Okite yaburi no gekitô hen a.k.a. Ranma ½: The Movie, Big Trouble in Nekonron, China (1991) BONUS: Harem Scarem
This one meets the Challenge requirement right out of the gate with a perverted old man fleeing from hysterical women after stealing their underwear. Said perverted old man, happens to be Ranma's grandfather and is the one who really sets in motion the events of the wacky and ridiculous Ranma side story. If you like this series, the movie will sate your wackiness itch. If not, the movie will do nothing to convert you.

Image
24. Mr. Mom (1983)
Somehow I've managed to never just sit down and watch this one. Hoenstly, I don't really get the classic status. It's mildly amusing in places but Keaton's character's haplessness at stay-at-home fatherhood is exasperating.

Image
25. The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976)
By the end of this one, it seems like Edwards wants to take Clouseau to James Bond-ian heights, turning the eternally put-upon Commissioner Deyfus into full-on Bond villain complete with giant laser and plot to destroy England. Dreyfus' descent into insanity and villainy over the course of the series is perhaps this franchise's most amusing masterstroke although much of the film reverts to the same old gags that we've seen before.

While his character is a bit creepy and obnoxious, John Cusack has his charming moments here too - most notably when pretending to be a psycho hitcher. He also has real chemistry with co-star Daphne Zuniga, who likewise has some very funny bits (asking Cusack if she hurt him) despite also not playing an especially warm/likeable character. The final scene tops things off well and I enjoyed many of the small turns, including young Tim Robbins.

6. Educating Rita (1983). The english never seem to get bored by there social classes. This movie avoids some of of the pitfalls that prejudices can bring with it. Cairne and Walters performed enjoyable. It even made with want to consume some of the self-importance poetry has to offer. But I think should better read that of my own country first. 6.9/10

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

15. Oddballs (1984) SH: Camping
16. Puberty Blues (1981) SH: Swimming is Partying

Snowballing is terrible. The only good thing about it is the kid convincing the moron "chaperone" to dress and Indiana Jones, and then knocking over a giant snowball that chases said chaperone down the hill. Oddballs is not a good film, but the humor is pretty solid - good joke pacing and tons of non-sequiturs; like every time the camp owner shoots his gun in the air, some famous flying character (e.g., Mary Poppins) falls out of the sky. Puberty Blues is the best actual film of the bunch and does a really nice job at showing what it's like to be a teenager. Interesting.

6. G.O.R.A. (Ömer Faruk Sorak-2004) Scavenger Hunt: Hababam Saves Christmas (2)

I think G.O.R.A. might be the wrong Turkish comedy for a comparison to Ernest, but here goes...

Both of these comedies involve the central character being the driving force of the comedy. The main comedians (Jim Varney & Cem Yilmaz) are essentially incorporating bits of their acts into a narrative and trying not to make it too much of a non sequitur. The difference is their comedic styling. Varney is more slapstick and focused on visual humor, whereas Yilmaz is a stronger actor, playing both the hero and the villain and is more playing on a character idiosyncrasies and broad stereotypes. They both have a stream-of-consciousness, but G.O.R.A. has a lot more ambition and budget.

Except for saying he prays to Joe Pesci, this was horrible. Joking about terrorist attacks and shootings in churches, raping teenagers, and hating children, and NOT WASHING HIS HANDS EVEN AFTER GOING TO THE BATHROOM, I think I’m done with George Carlin. Which is sad, because I saw some funny clips on YouTube and was eager to check out his comedy specials.

OP updated again. Make sure I didn't mess anything up please :) There were a couple of discrepancies I found from the previous updated I've since fixed.

I leave you today with a sample of Jackie Chan's particular brand of great physical comedy:

7. Jerry Seinfeld: 23 Hours to Kill (2020) - Jerry Seinfeld's new standup special on netflix. Solid special, but it took me a few minutes to warm up to Jerry's much cleaner style of comedy than most of the stand-up I've heard of late. I'd go so far as to say it's a pretty safe special for the whole family to watch, minus one or two jokes.

8. Guns Akimbo (2019) - Harry Potter lookin' coked out and dual wielding pistols like he's in a John Woo movie. This is a fast paced, crazy action comedy that I really loved.

Challenge: Share The Love Re-watch one of your favorite comedies with someone who has never seen it before. Describe who they are and what their reaction to it was.

I watched Guns Akimbo with my wife, who had never watched it. She laughed and seemed to be entertained by it thought she kept calling it "Ridiculous".

26. Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914) Bonus: .....
This early Charlie Chaplin film isn't as great as some of his later ones like The Gold Rush and Modern Times but still has some light chuckles and charms. While Chaplin is fine as a complete a-hole con man, the incredibly broad performance of Marie Dressler overshadows most of the rest of the picture, for better or worse (mostly for the worse honestly). Here's a good example of Mabel's mugging put to good use in service of a nice bit of physical comedy from Chaplin:

27. The Ghost Train (1931)
28. The Ghost Train (1941)
Here we have two adaptations of the titular spooky comedic mystery stage play about a group of people waiting at a train station talking about the rumors of a ghost train that causes anyone who faces it to die. Much of the actual comedy in both versions is courtesy of a bumbling fellow who may know more than he lets on and an annoying woman with a bird. The 1931 version is missing sound in the first part of the movie but if you watch the 1941 version first, you should have no trouble following what's going on given they're based on the same source material and seem to have mostly the same dialogue and plot.

Image
29. Flesh Eating Mothers (1988) Bonus: What's Eatin' You?
Thanks Max for reminding me that I recently got the Vinegar Syndrome blu-ray of this terrible, low rent horror comedy. As one would expect, the acting is pretty bad in places, the script rarely makes sense and the directing is shoddy and pretty incompetent. Despite all that, the movie is still pretty watchable and rarely boring, which is a pitfall that these incredibly low-budget horror movies often fall into.

Image
30. La comunidad a.k.a. Common Wealth (2000)
This one was a lot of fun. I've increasingly become more and more a fan of Alex de la Iglesias with every film I've seen of his, and this one is no different. It's a macabre crime thriller pitched somewhere between Shallow Grave, the Coen Bros. and Pedro Almodovar involving a real estate agent camping out in a tenement building that discovers a large sum of money in a recently deceased tenant's filthy apartment. When the other tenants discover she has the money, a bloody and madcap chase ensues that exposes the inherent greed and inhumanity of the average person. It's very funny and deliciously morbid. Definitely recommended.

Image
31. Paddy McGuinness Live (2006)
This stand-up special from an Irish comedian known at the time for a various comedy/travel/sports shows in the UK and currently on Top Gear is not very funny. Much of the humor is just spouting crass insults and referencing local Irish celebrities that I had no point of reference to. He also used such thick Irish slang at times that I honestly had no idea what the hell he was talking about on occasion, even with subtitles on.

Image
32. The Do-Deca-Pentathlon (2012) Bonus: What Did He Say?
This mumblecore dramedy from the Duplass brothers is about two brothers who have a history of fighting and competitiveness that reignites a big 25-event competition years later to once and for all settle who the "best brother" is. Rather than gaining closure, it opens old wounds and threatens the marriage and personal relationships of everyone involved. This could have easily been a really over-the-top wacky Will Ferrell-esque farce but given that it's coming from the Duplass brothers, it's a much more low-key affair driven by the small character moments that typify their style. As far as favorite dialogue, it's not especially clever or anything but when Mark finally caves to his brother's pressure to restart their 25 year old competition and says "I'm in.", it's all he needs to say to mark a major shift in the narrative that will take them down a path that'll be hard to come back from.

Image
33. Church Ball (2006)
So I'm gonna wildly speculate here and say I think this came about when someone from the Mormon church saw this and said, 'hey, we could do that but make it cleaner and way less funny'. Despite the presence of Fred Willard sporting an eye patch in the Rip Torn-esque role, this movie is relentlessly unfunny, confusing one-dimensional stereotypes and an overabundance of music montages for something resembling humor. "Hey, let's have Gary Coleman in the movie as a basketball player! It's funny because he's really short! And let's put a cowboy hat on him for no reason! Har har!" I'm gonna say avoid this one at all costs.

Image
34. Turist a.k.a. Force Majeure (2014)
This movie about a family on a skiing vacation that starts to fall apart when the father leaves his family behind during a false alarm avalanche is like a master class is cringe comedy so subtle that if you aren't paying attention you may not even realize it's intended as a comedy. But there are definitely times where it's intended to be funny. It definitely got some loud laughs out of me if for no other reason to give a little release to the uncomfortable tension built up by the relentlessly awkward conversations. If the movie has faults, it's in its incredibly glacial pace, clocking in at over two hours. The ending is a good one though.

OK. I wouldn't call any of this a "convincing" parody, but it was amusing. Here, we have Smirnoff the Wizard standing with all seven members of the Fellowship (this was a running joke, because Smirnoff, as you might guess, is drunk), including "Dildo Saggins" on the far left. And yes, the plot is that Dildo must wear the powerful g-string on her way to destroy it. All in all, I found it more enjoyable than the original.

8. Wondrous Oblivion (Paul Morrison-2003)

It's a good pro-sport, anti-racism, very 1960s English movie. But it's very much a light drama. I don't know why these sorts of movies get labelled as comedy just because they aren't super dour.

OP updated again. Make sure I didn't mess anything up please :) There were a couple of discrepancies I found from the previous updated I've since fixed.
I noticed in the bonus counts there should be 2 splats - I know I got 1 and I remember seeing 1 other
Ya, it looks like I actually missed yours back at the beginning. Should be corrected now.

11. Sex Ed (2014) 5/10 There’s a lot about this film that didn’t work, but it was an okay watch after all.
12. The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) 5.5/10
BONUS: Great Minds Think Alike
Go here and watch an unseen comedy that a friend recently watched in the last two days.
BONUS: flavo5000 checked this movie 18 hours 32 minutes ago
13. George Carlin: You Are All Diseased (1999) 1.5/10
14. Vai~E~Vem/Come and Go (2003) 5/10
15. Odette Toulemonde (2006) 7/10
16. The Cannonball Run (1981) 2/10
