This gets off to a hilarious start with Phil Silvers visibly unnerving his opponent by eating an egg and staggering about blind without his glasses on, and things only get funnier as he is made sheriff and takes absurd measures such as excluding gunslingers from glee clubs to avoid fights (!) and calling them "naughty, naughty, naughty", which just baffles everyone. Where the film really takes off though is with the introduction of Jack Benny near the end.

That might be it for me here too. Thanks for hosting flavo and hunting down all those amazing gifs. There's a few hours left before midnight, so maybe I'll make time for a non-western comedy (finally?!) but in any case I don't, it's been a blast; thanks for the daily updates. ;)

OP has been updated! As the last day of the challenge starts to fade or begin, depending on your time zone, it seems like an appropriate time to reflect on the month. We've laughed. We've cried. Hopefully more of the former, otherwise what the hell kind of comedies are you watching? sol got burned out on western comedies. allison got burned out on George Carlin. max got burned out on anime before ever watching any. Blueboybob, Traveller and psychotronicbeatnik all barreled past the 100 film barrier, seemingly resistant to any burnout at all. Mochard watched nearly forty comedies despite claims that he's not a fan. Kublai Khan was the first (and so far only) one to complete the admittedly quite daunting Bonus Challenge. I screwed up the OP stats a lot (but I mean, c'mon... it's only the second time I've ever hosted one of these shindigs :D ).

Hopefully everybody has had some fun with it. I'll probably do one more update in about 24 to 38 hours or so, so try to get any last watches logged by tomorrow before the final totals.

Now here's a brief clip from the 1997 Australian film The Castle in honor of all those who decided to pass up this challenge this month:

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

8. Hick (2011) 3/10
9. L’arte di arrangiarsi / The Art of Getting Along (1955) 6/10
10. Carlin at Carnegie (1983) 6/10
11. Sex Ed (2014) 5/10 There’s a lot about this film that didn’t work, but it was an okay watch after all.
12. The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) 5.5/10
BONUS: Great Minds Think Alike
Go here and watch an unseen comedy that a friend recently watched in the last two days.
BONUS: flavo5000 checked this movie 18 hours 32 minutes ago
13. George Carlin: You Are All Diseased (1999) 1.5/10
Except for saying he prays to Joe Pesci, this was horrible. Joking about terrorist attacks and shootings in churches, raping teenagers, and hating children, and NOT WASHING HIS HANDS EVEN AFTER GOING TO THE BATHROOM, I think I’m done with George Carlin. Which is sad, because I saw some funny clips on YouTube and was eager to check out his comedy specials.
14. Vai~E~Vem/Come and Go (2003) 5/10
15. Odette Toulemonde (2006) 7/10
16. The Cannonball Run (1981) 2/10

18. Surf Nazis Must Die (1987) 4/10
19. O Leão da Estrela (1947, Portugal) 6/10
20. Supercondriaque (2014, Danny Boon) 7/10 HOOPLA
21. Rue Mandar (2012) 6/10 Okay characters story that felt like it could go in the direction of SUMMER HOURS, but played more for (cheap) laughs.
22. Lou! Journal infime (2014) 5.5/10
23. Klaus (2019) 6/10 comedy/animation NETFLIX
24. Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable (2018) 6/10
25. The Do-over (2016) 6/10
26. Sandy Wexler (2017) 3.5/10

28. Imagine That (2009) Eh.
29. Plus One (2019) 5.5/10
30. Manson Family Vacation (2015) 5/10 Some hits, some misses.
31. Voulez-vous rire avec moi ce soir? (2018) 7/10
BONUS: Too Funny for Fiction
Watch a comedic documentary and post a brief description of why it was funny (no sarcasm please...Shoah is not a comedy).
ANSWER: They discussed how it was possible for a German comic to be funny.
32. Bride of Re-Animator (1989) 2/10
33. Barbecue (2014) 6/10 French comedy.
34. The Wrong Missy (2020) 5/10
35. Que Horas Ela Volta?/The Second Mother (2015) hard to rate, was good, discussed class and upward movement,
36. Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics (2020) 6/10
BONUS: Woah
Watch a film featuring a drug trip and post a clip or screenshot of the trip in question.
Image
37. The Cat and the Canary (1939) 6/10 Kinda funny and kinda unsophisticated as well.
38. Humpday (2009) Saw this Saturday to honor the life of Lynn Shelton, a filmmaker who passed on Friday.
39. We Go Way Back (2006) described as a tragi-comic tale on IMDb-also directed by Lynn Shelton.
40. Bolt (2008) 5/10 This rating is generous. It’s on both Disney+ and Netflix. I saw it on Netflix. It’s also currently on two official lists.
41. Sheitan (2006) 3/10 The tone was really off. I don’t know why it’s supposed to be a “comedy” but I am so in the mood for anything tagged horror AND comedy right now.
42. Thirst Street (2017) 3/10
43. Winter Kills (1979) 3/10
44. The Cake Eaters (2007) 5/10
45. Coffee & Kareem (2020) 5/10
46. Zivot je cudo/Life Is a Miracle (2004) 6/10 Not Kusturica’s best, but still has the feel of one of his classics.
got to 50% (bronze) on TSPDT's Ain't Nobody's Blues but My Own with this film
47. The Last Days of Chez Nous (1992) 6/10
48. Jerry Seinfeld: 23 Hours to Kill (2020) 7/10
BONUS: It Could Happen To You
Watch a comedy that features a situation that actually happened to you in real life and provide details of what happened in both movie and reality.
Jerry Seinfeld talks about being THAT person who didn’t pick up his trash and also didn’t put it in the trash can after the movie. All I have to say is that I used to work in a movie theater and I was the OTHER person who had to clean up afterward (sometimes). If it was like a premiere or full house, well, it got me wondering who were these people that didn’t clean up after themselves and now I know…. (this doesn’t make me hate Seinfeld, but it did make him seem a tad out of touch, being a millionaire and me, being a relatively normal person).
49. W. Kamau Bell: Private School Negro (2018) 8/10 Heard positive things about this one and added it to my watchlist. Was not disappointed.
BONUS: Homie Don't Play That
Watch a comedy featuring a predominantly black cast.

51. Birthmarked (2018) 6/10
52. Marc Maron: End Times Fun (2020) 7/10

60. Marc Maron: Thinky Pain (2013) 7/10
61. The Affairs of Anatol (1921) barely 6/10
BONUS: .....
Watch a silent comedy and post a screenshot of your favorite physical gag.
Leopard on the set of a Cecil B. Mille film? :o
Image
62. Under the Eiffel Tower (2018) 5/10
63. The Last Laugh (2019) Having a hard time rating this, but leaning toward: 3/10

65. TIG (2015) 8/10
66. Melvin Goes to Dinner (2003) 5.5/10

75. Adult Life Skills (2016) 6/10
76. Isn't It Romantic (2019) 8/10
77. Ladies in Black (2018) 7/10 Charm of the actors + Bruce Beresford really knows how to make a movie.

Didn't have time for many comedies as westerns took full priority the last week, but here four more to add and close the challenge for me.

21. Ang pangarap kong holdap (2018, Marius Talampas) - 5/10
--- Bastos comedy and better than most pinoy slapstickers coming out. As it's all about cashing in the golden penis. Pepe Herrera has become a favorite ever since I fist saw him in Ang probinsyano, and he shows he might be one of the best screen comedians coming out of the Philippines at the moment. For silly comedies he makes me laugh the most without coming across as forced as so many of them do. He's a natural at it.

22. The Harvey Girls (1946, George Sidney) - 7/10
--- Pure MGM. All about the fun and splendor as Judy Garland sings her way through a rowdy western town as a mail-order-bride. I really liked it. A little too singy and showy, but with so many different personalities its such a good time. Exactly what you's expect from a MGM musical where Garland goes west.

23. Gentlemen with Guns (1946, Sam Newfield) - 5/10
--- Clever will never be the right way to describe this cheap western, but Gentlemen with Guns (1946) sure was a lot of fun! Fuzzy trying to get married in between being framed for murder and lynched. Messing with dames is something Al St. John should never do. It even causes a tiny rift between him and his good pal Buster Crabbe. So if you're in the mood for a real silly old western, this is a good pick.

24. Outlaws of the Plains (1946, Sam Newfield) - 3/10
--- Fuzzy getting fooled into thinking he's clairvoyant while playing with his crystal ball. He believes it so badly that he even betrays his own pal Buster Crabbe! Good old Fuzzy! Silly plot, below average action.

41. Il fiore delle mille e una notte - Arabian Nights (Pier Paolo Pasolini, 1974) 6/10 ... This was a tough slog in comparison with the other two in the trilogy, although I found this one dropped in quality with each film. At least the filming locations were stunning, with the bonus of rarely seen locations in Iran, Yemen etc.

179. The Silence of the Hams (1994)
Eh... This was pretty bad. Obviously Ezio Greggio (star, writer and director) is a fan of Zucker/Abrams/Zucker and Mel Brooks (he even got Mel Brooks to show up in a cameo here) but fails to understand the reasons for much of these influences' successes. This feels more like a precursor to junk like <genre> Movie movies with a string of dumb gags that rarely land. And that voiceover narration is just horrible. There were multiple times where something moderately funny was going to happen but the voiceover overexplained the joke and killed it. The movie also took what could've been funny references like casting Martin Balsam as the detective investigating the faux-Bates Motel, but again, just runs it into the ground. Avoid unless you like your comedies relentlessly unfunny.

Image
180. David Cross: Making America Great Again (2016)
I always feel so conflicted about David Cross. He can be very funny. He can also be incredibly derisive, smug and a huge asshole. With his book I Drink For A Reason, there's a lot more of the latter. With appearances in things like Mr. Show and Arrested Development, it's much more the former. With this stand-up, it's a mixed bag. He seems to acknowledge that he's a douche but still condescends to the audience and to people he feels beneath him quite a lot anyway. Still, there were some funny jokes in here. They were just crammed between insults and political rants.

Image
181. Warnung vor einer heiligen Nutte a.k.a. Beware of a Holy Whore (1971)
I'm guessing this is Fassbinder in a kind of self-critical role in a film about a troubled movie production and a director who just screams in frustration at everything that doesn't go his way. Honestly, I'm just not the biggest fan of Fassbinder's. His films tend to be very sluggish and unengaging in many instances (not to say I haven't seen some I've liked just that they're few and far between) with this one being no exception.

Image
182. Masterminds (2016)
Here's another one from director Jared Hess, most well-known for Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. Masterminds is definitely more plot driven than his other films being loosely based on one of the largest armored car robberies in US history, but it also definitely contains many of his signature tendencies like weird, kitschy hairstyles and costume design, bizarre characters who behave in oddly muted ways at inappropriate times and a kind of sweet emotional core (here represented by Zach Galifinakis and Kristen Wiig). It's not bad and at times can be kind of funny, but like Hess' other films, your mileage may vary with his style.

Image
183. Welcome to Collinwood (2002)
Here we have the first feature from Anthony & Joe Russo, some fellows responsible for random episodes of Community and Arrested Development and the 'Owen Wilson as clingy houseguest' movie You, Me and Dupree... Oh, and I guess they have also directed the #1 and #5 highest grossing films of all time (the last two Avengers movies for the three people who have apparently been living underground with mole people for the last ten years). Welcome to Collinwood is a blue collar heist comedy in the tradition of flicks like Raising Arizona and more recently Logan Lucky. It's got a brisk pace and is entertaining. I probably wouldn't say it's anything special though.

Image
184. Beyond the Law (1968)
Is Criterion trolling everyone with this Norman Mailer Eclipse set? Cuz these movies are fucking awful.

Image
185. Gooby (2009) Bonus: A Kid At Heart
Soeaking of fucking awful, a combination of How Did This Get Made and the one remaining bonus challenge task I hadn't completed yet got me to buckle down and sit through this horror show. Gooby is a giant, incredibly creepy teddy bear come to life to help a boy who is apparently seeing demons or something? I felt pretty bad for both Robbie Coltrane as Gooby (as to why Gooby has a British accent despite being the living embodiment of a Canadian child's toy...no idea) and Eugene Levy as a teacher/jilted children's book author who wants to be famous by stalking Gooby or some shit. I can only assume these guys needed a payday or something. As to the explanation of the fart joke, you see Gooby is quite large. And when he farts, IT'S EVEN FUNNIER BECAUSE HE'S BIGGER THAN THE AVERAGE PERSON. GEDDIT!?!? :X

But hey, at least I finished the bonus challenge!

Maybe I'll check this out as we get down to the wire. I still have a few hours left and am looking for a couple of short films before the end of the month.

FTV:12: Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls Like Mom (1980) (Spain.)7.

Image

Detailing in the Archives book dedicated to his credits by Paul Duncan that the project originally started as a planned Photo-Story for La Vibora magazine until Carmen Maura (who he was appearing on stage with at the time) said it should be turned it a film instead, leading to the first 40 minutes being shot in June 1979,and the rest not being filmed until May and June 1980! Despite the stop-start process of the production, the early stages of the future recurring themes and motifs in writer/directing auteur Pedro Almodovar credits are drawn on the film.

Inspired by the American underground cinema of the era, Almodovar & cinematographer Paco Femenia play a wonderfully brash Punk Rock atmosphere, going into the real underground of Punk and Drag Queen shows, where the murky venues the events are held in,get lit up by Almodovar gloriously kitsch fashion design for the three female friends. Retaining the Photo-Book roots with Comic-Panel inserts breaking the movie into chapters, Almodovar snaps outrageous subversive Comedy on the Melodramatic trio and Pop media such as adverts in jagged tracking shots filmed on the dusty side streets of the city.

Stating later in the book that the low budget meant he was "Forced to relinquish some scenes and also meant that I couldn't replace fragments of the material shot at the beginning, with sequences, that a year later, seemed more appropriate." The fragmented way the screenplay by Almodovar came together, actually works with the Punk sensibilities of the movie, thanks to the intimate relationship between the three women, ( Almodovar displaying a early interest in women- led films.) fluctuating between sudden gross-out Comedy and hanging out at Punk Rock gigs, on a memorable weekend with Pepi, Luci and Bom.

BONUS: Woah
Watch a film featuring a drug trip and post a clip or screenshot of the trip in question.

37. The Cat and the Canary (1939) 6/10 Kinda funny and kinda unsophisticated as well.

43. Winter Kills (1979) 3/10

got to 50% (bronze) on TSPDT's Ain't Nobody's Blues but My Own with this film

65. TIG (2015) 8/10
66. Melvin Goes to Dinner (2003) 5.5/10
67. Fun Bar Karaoke (1997) 3/10 Oh man, you mean, this wasn’t even official? :(
68. Hannah Gadsby: Douglas (2020) GOOD
69. Jen Kirkman: I'm Gonna Die Alone (And I Feel Fine) (2015) 6.5/10
70. Tracy Morgan: Staying Alive (2017) 5/10
71. The New Romantic (2018) 2.5/10
72. Vivir dos veces, Live Twice, Love Once (2019) 5.5/10 Had a very TV-movie quality to it but was okay.
73. Love Is Blind (2019) 2/10 When I laughed, it was at the so bad it’s really bad moments.
74. Romantic Comedy (2019) 8/10 A breakdown of the romantic comedy and how it affects both women and men’s expectations from love.
75. Adult Life Skills (2016) 6/10
76. Isn't It Romantic (2019) 8/10
77. Ladies in Black (2018) 7/10 Charm of the actors + Bruce Beresford really knows how to make a movie.
78. Tig Notaro: Happy To Be Here (2018) 7/10
79. Bianca (1984) 2/10
80. Welcome Aboard / Bienvenue à bord (2011) 5.5/10 This rating is very generous but I typically like Valérie Lemercier.
81. La fille du patron (2015) 4/10 Not very engaging!!!
82. El bar (2017) 6/10
83. El apóstata (I) (2015) 5.5/10 (It wasn’t very interesting. I probably would have rated it lower, but it wasn’t that bad)
84. El Alien y yo (2016) 2/10 It seemed like an okay band movie at first, but the tone was just wrong for me and none of the characters or situations were likable.
85. Asperger's Are Us (2016) 6/10
86. David Cross: Making America Great Again (2016) 5/10
87. George Carlin: Complaints & Grievances (2001) 3/10 Some of his bits are really funny, but some stuff was repetitive from what I saw earlier in the month. Some of the comments toward women were unnecessary.
88. Comedy Shorts:
-Daddio (2019) 18 mins.
-Delphine (2019) 15 mins. 6/10 mubi
-The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1949) 6/10 34 mins.

That's it for me! Yes, I had abandoned George Carlin, but the movie I really wanted to see was about 15 minutes longer and I was afraid it was going to finish after midnight, so I chose something shorter instead. David Cross (#86) & George Carlin (#87) eerily both talked about a guy named Wayne LaPierre from the NRA. CREEPY!

All in all, it was good to choose movies in my watchlist during the month that were comedies, even though I made time for docs on Jeffrey Dahmer, Jeffrey Epstein, Tiger King and I watched Dead Souls as well (8 hour long documentary on turmoil in China). Those kind of cut into my final #s, but I did what I could do!

86. David Cross: Making America Great Again (2016) 5/10

CREEPY!
That 5/10 to 6/10 is about where I'd put that David Cross special too. The other stand-ups I've heard from him are probably in a similar range.

As for Wayne LaPierre, it makes sense. He's a very outspoken jackass who basically paints a target on himself for liberals by saying stuff like wanting an armed official in every school in the country and "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

32. Jojo Rabbit (2019) - written and directed by the director of Thor Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit fluctuates between well executed comedy and dark subject matter. It is set in the final days of the third reich and is from the point of view of a 10 year old boy with an active imagination. The movie is full of great performances from a stellar cast. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it as long as you can put up with swastikas everywhere.

Alrighty. Here's my last update of the challenge. I've gotten behind on these, so my write-ups will be more brief than usual.

Image
186. Pro urodov i lyudey a.k.a. Of Freaks & Men (1998)
This was a weird Russian flick with a very dry sense of humor. Pretty good but not something I'd recommend to everyone.

Image
187. Kevin & Perry Go Large (2000)
Ugh... This was awful. Like a mix of Dumb & Dumber and 24 Hour Party People but MUCH worse than either one (maybe on the same level as some garbage Jamie Kennedy movie). May well be the worst British comedy I've ever seen.

Image
188. Psychos in Love (1987)
I wasn't expecting much from this very low budget dark comedy, but I ended up finding it pretty funny in places. Like an odd mix of Woody Allen and John Waters.

Image
189. Omaha (The Movie) (1995)
Very low budget and quirky but pretty solid. It seemed to have only been made available only on a DVD video magazine.

Image
190. Gold Diggers in Paris (1938)
Not the best in the Busby Berkley Gold Diggers series but still has a couple of solid set pieces and some funny dialogue.

Image
191. The Death of Stalin (2017)
This one was great. Really funny. Definitely recommended for fans of Ianucci's In The Loop. The casting of non-Russian actors is a little distracting at first (especially Tambor and Buscemi) but you get used to it.

And that's it for me. I was really distracted this month but luckily I discovered that I had forgotten to record 4 of my earlier viewings before it was too late to post them. Doesn't look like it will change things for anyone else. That's probably also why I didn't get further along with the bonus challenge. I ended on a high note anyway with a film that always puts me in a great mood. I love Trigger and Bob Hope fighting for the blankets in bed in particular. In fact, nearly any scene featuring Trigger in any movie is a delight.

Thanks for hosting, flavo. I especially enjoyed your daily updates - nearly everyone made me want to rewatch the film they were from. And congrats on your victory - that's a lotta laughs!

Tragedy + TimeShow

1. Top Secret! (ZAZ, 1984) (re-watch)
2. Hollywood Canteen (Delmer Daves, 1944)
3. Penelope (Arthur Hiller, 1966)
4. Kid Blue (James Frawley, 1973)
5. Al este del oeste (Mariano Ozores, 1984)
6. Summer Job (Paul Madden, 1989)
7. Tango & Cash (Andrey Konchalovskiy/Albert Magnolia, 1989) (re-watch)
8. I quattro dell'Ave Maria / Ace High (Giuseppe Colizzi, 1968)
9. Hooper (Hal Needham, 1978)
10. La collina degli stivali / Boot Hill (Giuseppe Colizzi, 1969)
11. Sylvia Scarlett (George Cukor, 1935)
12. Cutthroat Island (Renny Harlin, 1995) (re-watch)
13. Joe l'implacabile / Dynamite Joe (Antonio Margheriti, 1967)
14. Hot Shots! (Jim Abrahams, 1991)
15. True Lies (James Cameron, 1994) (re-watch)
16. Grey Gardens (the Maysles/Ellen Hovde/Muffie Meyer, 1975)
17. The Return of the Living Dead (Dan O'Bannon, 1985)
18. Hot Shots! Part Deux (Jim Abrahams, 1993)
19. Lonesome Cowboys (Andy Warhol, 1968)
20. Viva Maria! (Louis Malle, 1965)
21. Les pétroleuses / Frenchie King (Christian-Jacque, 1971)
22. Tange Sazen yowa: Hyakuman ryô no tsubo / Sazen Tange and the Pot Worth a Million Ryo (Sadao Yamanaka, 1935)

I saw Yamanaka's other two surviving films a few years ago, but for whatever reason didn't get around to this one at the time. While the other two films have comic elements but have more significant crime and dramatic elements, this would best be described as a comedy with a bit of melodrama and a somewhat pessimistic last act (though the comedy is still there). I really need to get better copies of these - get the MOC set or hope for a Criterion - and watch them all again; there is definitely something lost for me from a cultural aspect, but also I think Yamanaka's framing and his radical use of depth - a pretty extraordinary visual style for the era - needs more time on my part. All three films feel like great works that I'm just not...quite...getting, though I've liked them all, and this one probably the most. The story of a pot that has the map to a treasure worth a million ryo, and how it goes from person to person while both the original owner and his brother, neither of whom thought it worth anything, start searching for it, is amusing enough but eventually the focus on the tragicomic one-armed, one-eyed samurai Tanze Sazen brings this a depth and poignancy that is quite powerful in the end. I dunno, can't say more at the moment.

23. La kermesse héroïque / Carnival in Flanders (Jacques Feyder, 1935)

A broad farce taking place in the early 17th century, as the inhabitants of a small Belgian town (Bruges in reality, though it's not called that here) prepare for the arrival of their Spanish overlords, worried about both their wealth and their lives. The burghers who run the town have a plan that mostly involves hiding and pretending that the mayor is dead; the mayor's wife (Françoise Rosay, tall, imposing, and majestic) has conceived of a different plan, to welcome the Spaniards with open arms and make them forget that they are conquerors. There's a lot of amusing satire at the expense of the church and the gentry here, but most of the jokes are at the expense of the puffed-up lords of the town, who are really just middle-class merchants (if that) whose wives really wear the pants. Beautifully shot by regular Feyder DP Harry Stradling, a future 14-time Oscar nominee (twice winner) who specialized in lavish period spectacles, with production design by Lazare Meerson. Just terrific fun; I've seen little from Feyder but I'm going to have to catch more.

24. MISC FUNNY HA-HA SHORTS 15 + 6 + 7 + 10 + 12 + 7 + 10 = 67 minutes

a) Breakfast (Table Top Dolly) (Michael Snow, 1976)
b) Sh-h-h-h-h-h (Tex Avery, 1955)
c) The Bear and the Hare (Preston Blair / Michael Lah, 1948)
d) Hot Sands (Alfred J. Goulding, 1931)
e) Little Red Riding Hood (David Kaplan, 1997)
f) Bear Raid Warden (George Gordon, 1944)
g) The Eyes Have It (Alfred J. Goulding, 1931)

The Snow piece would be more amusing probably in a better copy; I have to say that I remembered when watching this one reason why he's among my favorite experiemental filmmakers - he actually does have a sense of humor that comes out in sly ways in the work, such as this piece where a very slowly moving camera destroys a breakfast set up on a table. The Avery is one of his better 50s films though not on the level of his best at WB; it's a typically frantic piece about a man trying to get some peace and quiet at a sanitarium that isn't what it promises to be. c) and f) are MGM Barney the Bear cartoons, and they're above average for this series - MGM always had great production values, so they look as good or better than most any Warner Brothers short from this period, and almost as good as Disney, but they just aren't that funny. Little Red Riding Hood I watched for Christina Ricci; it's an atmospheric b/w version of the story but it didn't add up to much. The two Goulding shorts are live-action comedy 1-reelers that I found totally bland and forgettable.

25. LAUREL & HARDY SHORTS 21 + 21 + 31 = 73 minutes

a) The Fixer-Uppers (Charley Rogers, 1935)
b) Thicker Than Water (James W. Horne, 1935)
c) Laughing Gravy (full 3-reel version) (James W. Horne, 1930)

The Fixer-Uppers deals with a woman convinced that her hubby doesn't love her anymore; good thing Laurel and Hardy are around to try to make him jealous - Stan says it worked for a lady he knew, but that lady didn't have dueling champion Charles Middleton for a husband. Middleton make this one, otherwise fairly average in the L&H filmography. Thicker Than Water is a domestic dispute story, fairly typical - Ollie's wife thinks he's a good-for-nothing and his buddy and their tenant Stan even worse, and they proceed to prove her right, first breaking all the dishes then making a shall we say very poor $300 investment. The ending's awesome though, as is the ending of Laughing Gravy which manages to maintain a pretty amazing frenzied pace for a half-hour, and also a strange mix of pathos and biting humor at the very end.

26. Bonnie Scotland (James W. Horne, 1935)

Apart from Sons of the Desert, I haven't really been bowled over by any of the L&H features I've seen, but I like them enough to keep watching them, I guess at about a 1-a-year pace. Here's my 2020 choice, 85 years young, and it's maybe a bit better than average, which makes it solid, very good but not "great' to my taste. The boys are in Scotland where Stan is to get a big inheritance - or so he thinks - and then they end up in the army, and are shipped off to India, where they have to help out Stan's distant cousin and her love affair with the poor-but-good guy, over her scheming would-be-sister-in-law. The segment where they have problems with their landord is quite similar to much of Laughing Gravy - and several other shorts - and the whole thing doesn't quite cohere, and it just sort of ... ends without resolution. But it's funny enough and that's really all that matters here.

27. Laberinto de pasiones / Labyrinth of Passion (Pedro Almodóvar, 1982)

The director's second commercial feature feels like a bridge between the really scattershot and largely plotless Pepi, Luci, Bom and his later work - more plot, the beginnings of some of the melodramatic (especially medical) elements that would become strong tropes in his later work, a star role for Cecilia Roth and his first collaboration with Antonio Banderas, in a supporting role here. It's also got a bit more visual beauty than Pepi, though it's still quite low-budget and the director's trademark bold use of color is only intermittently on display here. The plot, such as it is, involves Riza, a gay Prince from a fictional Middle Eastern country who falls in love with Sexilia (Roth) a nympho pop star, and various attempts by multiple groups of people to find the incognito Riza to...kill him, kidnap him, take him back to safety, etc. And there are about two dozen other characters, and several little subplots that don't really go anywhere. Amusing enough but I prefer the more structured later Almodóvar for the most part.

28. Blazing Saddles (Mel Brooks, 1974) (re-watch)

I'm gonna guess 7th or 8th viewing. What to say about this film that hasn't been said? It's my favorite Mel Brooks film and probably my favorite western comedy, or at least my favorite where the emphasis is clearly on the humor. Because it's a parody and spoof of not just westerns but other film tropes of the period - like blaxploitation - and because it has both a broad brush and plenty of little subtle bits, it gets better for me every time, or at least I get more of the jokes with more film knowledge to bring to it. I don't think I knew "Van" Johnson last time, for instance, and Cleavon Little's "urban" attire and attitude make more sense to me now after a whole lot of Jim Brown and Fred Williamson under my belt. And the title song by Frankie Laine is, for my money, the best western theme song ever - serious or not:

That's it for me, thanks flav!

The OP has been updated with the FINAL TOTALS!!

In first place is some gentleman named flavo followed by the mighty blueboybob and Traveller lapping at his heels. Rounding out the top five is psychotronicbeatnik and allisoncm! Congrats everybody. Those are some impressive numbers, folks! I'm not much of a stats guy but I imagine that's gotta be some of the higher totals in a challenge this year, so good on ya! And once again, congrats to Kublai Khan for being the first to complete the Bonus Challenge as well! I wasn't sure anyone actually would, but we ended up with two finishing it and a third being a stones throw from the end.

I hope everybody had a good time, but now it's time to move on to some of the greatest '60s Chinese films ever made.

Today I leave you finally with a clip that illustrates a particularly unfortunate movie-going experience from a film that will count as a double on this next challenge series: Goodbye, Dragon Inn:
