EDIT: Pie Chart removed.

I only just noticed that allisoncm did not to declare the country of her viewings. I need to update the leaderboard now and place her last.
Sorry about that. I am aware of the rules, but it honestly slipped my mind. I will repost.

The premise here is almost as fascinating as Timecrimes from the same writer, but the execution (from a different director) is lacking. The setting is certainly perfectly unsettling, looking a bit too perfect with its opulent sets and ostentatious outfits, but the film suggests that something is amiss from too early on with its protagonist suspicious from the get-go. The film is also never as eerie as Cube or Saw since she knows a lot already from the start.

2. Mi tío Jacinto / Uncle Hyacynth (Ladislao Vajda, 1956) 8/10 Spain

In some ways quite similar to Bicycle Thieves, particularly the casting and characters, but has some distinct elements that makes it exciting in a different way. While I love Bicycle Thieves it might be a bit one-note mood-wise, here there are lots of ups and downs as our protagonists go through the constant chase of being poor. There's actually a few mini-twists too that I didn't necessarily see coming. Great work on the wardrobe throughout (appearances is of course a big theme of the film), makes a big difference to the street scenes. A high 8 and excellent pick for Spain in the World Cup.

This at times feels like it is set in an alternative universe with strange adoption processes, funerals and so on, but all of the emotions feel very tangible, whether it be a woman upset over father buying a mask (to hide her deformed face) for her birthday, another feeling betrayed when her even more deformed boyfriend wants plastic surgery and so on. The film also looks amazing, filmed with pronounced pastel purples and pinks throughout.

This felt a lot like Cube crossed with Snowpiercer to me, except that the protagonist and his roommate are volunteers here, albeit ones who signed up for different reasons, unaware of what to expect. This is a key difference that the film does not exploit enough (what would drive someone to volunteer) though much about the movie goes unexplained. Still, this is a gripping watch throughout: great atmosphere, sets and sociological ideas.

do we have any Portuguese speakers active at the moment?

I was wondering if I could get some help translating some intertitles for a couple silent films. I can make the subtitles/timings, I just need help with the translation. I can provide screenshots.

Hi all,I was wondering if GDT's The Devil's Backbone & Pan's Labyrinth are Spain or Mexico films? From Wiki:

Devil's:

" It was independently produced by Pedro Almodóvar as an international co-production between Spain and Mexico, and was filmed in Madrid."

Pan's:

"The film was shot in a Scots Pine forest situated in the Guadarrama mountain range, Central Spain."

Thanks.

Lampa, lynchs and Hawk all hail from Portugal. Not that any of them are regular challenge participants or are likely to ever read this thread. Apparently there are some differences between Brazilian and European Portuguese. I imagine not a lot though, so maybe ask jdidaco? Otherwise, couldn't you just type the subtitles into Google translate?

Both films are co-productions, and as per the OP, I am allowing genuine co-productions, provided that Spain made a significant contribution.

With both those films, they were nominated for multiple Goya Awards, so my stance would be that if the Spanish film industry is content with regarding them as co-productions, we should be too. ;) But I would encourage you not to spend the whole month watching co-productions.

ah yes. eyeballs. I'll put the word out in a couple other threads as well. don't mind the spamming!

and I could use google translate as a last resort but I'll try and get it done properly first.
