Spain's answer to Superman, this is a little slow to warm up with tons of exposition, but once the film settles into him speeding around his workplace, making ice cubes from tap water and so on, a nice comedy angle takes off. There are also lots of laughs later to come involving his boss battling a robot vacuum cleaner, a robot version of his girlfriend and a hilarious first sarcastic comment about his mum that his girlfriend makes upon seeing his suit.

I've watched the first five episodes of La Casa del Papel and I'm not sure if I'm going to continue. The first two episodes were good, but episodes 3-5 make it feel like this series is less a heist show and more a soap opera wrapped in a heist.

The first third is certainly a mess here, jumping between timelines with limited exposition. The middle third is very well crafted though as our hero takes shelter at an isolated farmhouse. There is lots of tension as the dog tracks him there and terrorises both a single mother and her superstitious daughter, played by a pre-Pan's Labyrinth Ivana Baquero, who of course shines in the role (see above) with some solid surrogate father/daughter stuff.

Uma Bracaglia is excellent as a sullen girl here with lots of interest in how she is pushed towards making a deal with a demon because of her strict religious upbringing, with all her teachers insisting her mother (who committed suicide) is burning in hell. There are also some zany comedy moments as Bracaglia is shown all different ways of torturing the demon. Alas, the film is pretty dull whenever Bracaglia is off-screen with flat adult characters.

Image

Viewed for the first time in 18 years, Talk to Her remains an incredibly interesting film and one that perhaps has more currency now than back then with some of its morally ambiguous ground, getting us to feel something for someone who does something questionable. The first 35 minutes before the protagonists meet move slowly, but the unusual friendship that gradually develops between them after meeting is very dynamic. Great silent film too.

From imagining herself flying off buildings, to continual visions of her mother, this becomes so thoroughly invested in the girl's point-of-view that it is delightfully impossible to take anything that we see on face value. Ana Torrent shines in the lead, and while the film is sometimes creepy, this is not totally downbeat. In fact, while the ending stacks up less well upon revision, it actually feels appropriate for a film about a child dealing with grief.

4. Viridiana (Luis Buñuel, 1961) 6/10 Spain

Probably went into this with too high expectations. Turns out this was more of a trial run before the truly magnificent El Ángel Exterminador made a year later. At its worst it's as blunt and unfunny as an anarchy film as Vera Chytilová's Daisies, but at least Buñuel's early attempt is less of a blatant ripoff of Louis Malle's Zazie dans le métro.

I've watched the first five episodes of La Casa del Papel and I'm not sure if I'm going to continue. The first two episodes were good, but episodes 3-5 make it feel like this series is less a heist show and more a soap opera wrapped in a heist.
I just finished Season 3. You do want to slap them sometimes and say, "You're surrounded by people who want to kill you. Wake up! Get back to work!" On the other hand, I've been watching a number of K dramas recently. At least these robbers aren't having exactly the same argument each episode, which could be solved by actually discussing the issues.

The first two seasons of La Casa de Papel are one robbery, the next two seasons are a second robbery. The English title, Money Heist, has to be one of the stupidest titles in years.

The set-up here has potential but does not really work. There is some great action towards the beginning as they practise their heist, but then the film slows down to a snail's pace, full of dull conversations built on lame metaphors ("sticks are sticks"). An unexpected bond between two characters adds a little to the proceedings, but is not really developed enough. The film picks up a bit towards the end, but by then it is too late. Luis Tosar is solid tho.

Along similar lines to Bart Layton's The Imposter, or at least to begin with, this Spanish thriller circles around a teenager reunited with a family whose son went missing a decade earlier with uncertainty over whether he is really who he says he is. The first quarter-hour is intense with so much ambiguity and mysteriousness, yet whereas The Imposter was built on increasingly insane events and turns, this quickly descends into humdrum melodrama.
